Standing Up for Yourself - How to Overcome Manipulation

Man in Black Suit Jacket

When you are filled with self-doubt, the tendency is you don't know how to fight for yourself. What's worse is that you can easily be controlled by other persons even if it is against your will.

You need to fight for your right.

Be proud of who you are.

Stand-up for yourself.

Don't let fear hold you back. If you continue to live in a world of cowardice you will never see the beauty of life. Living means taking risks and going beyond your comfort zone. The world is too big to allow yourself to be manipulated by a person. Here's what you got to do...

Know that you have a right

When you negotiate with a manipulative person, you have to be aware that your rights have been trampled on. Always remember that you have the privilege to defend yourself especially if you are not respected as an individual.

Manipulators will rob you of your rights so that they will have dominance over you. It is only "you: who have the power to command your life. Be in charge.

Stop blaming yourself

You are not at fault. Everyone has a weakness and it depends upon you on how you will be able to overcome it. Being able to conquer shortcomings is how we grow stronger as a person. Don't ever think that you are the problem. What becomes wrong is when you let that person continue to manipulate you.

Know how to say "no"

There is nothing wrong with expressing how you feel particularly if it is against your morals. We all have different principles that govern our lives, that is why respect should be given for individual differences. Be firm with your decisions. Keep in mind that saying "no" is simply admitting what you truly feel and you absolutely have the privilege to do so.

Stand your ground

A person can only intimidate you if you let them. Don't show your weakness and show them that you're strong. Take control. For once in your life, live in freedom, release yourself from the constraints of fear.

All these things are easier said than done. But how can you change your situation if you don't start deciding for yourself? If you want to achieve something, take that next step. Respect is something that you have to earn. The moment you fail to acknowledge your right as a person, that is when you lose your individuality. Respect yourself first and everything else will follow.

The Birth of Creative Work (By Sarah Koestner)

person holding book with sketch

A few weeks ago I started taking a weekly art class. It's been great for me to connect to my creativity in a structured way. I have learned so much about my creative process and I've only been in the class for 3 weeks! I can't wait to see what else I learn over the next couple of months.

This week in class the focus was portraits. The instructor had us put a big blob of red paint in the middle of our paper, which was used to create the shape of the model's head. She told us to use black and white paint to convey where light and shadow were hitting the model. We had 15 minutes to complete the painting. The idea of this exercise was to work quickly and not get bogged down by thinking about each brushstroke.

We did three of these 15-minute paintings over the course of the class. Each time, mid-way through, I was convinced I was doing a terrible job and I should start over. (There's that sneaky inner critic again!) However, instead of crumpling up my paper, I breathed through the discomfort and finished each painting. And guess what?! A face emerged on the canvas. I started each painting with a big blob of paint in the middle of the paper and over the course of 15 minutes somehow I created a portrait. In a way, it was magical.

It got me thinking. When I'm in the middle of a rehearsal process I often go through a similar experience. I start off the project excited about the possibilities and happy about the chance to create something new, but in the middle of the process, I sometimes feel lost. Everything feels muddy and uncertain. It's a very uncomfortable time, often filled with self-doubt. It can feel as if you are eight months pregnant with your creative work, awkwardly lumbering about, anxiously waiting to give birth.

What I've come to realize is that the middle of the creative process is very much a liminal zone. Liminal is defined by Merriam-Webster as "of, relating to, or being in an intermediate state, phase, or condition." Liminal zones are transitional times in the human experience when we are neither here nor there. Examples of common liminal zones are: graduating, moving, starting a new job, getting married, being pregnant. These are often challenging times in our lives, filled with uncertainty and discomfort.

My thought for you today is to realize that the middle part of any creative process is a liminal zone. It's okay that in the midst of creation we are uncomfortable-- you could even say that it is natural or inevitable. You will get through it. Trust that you won't stay there forever. That "in-between place" is simply a part of the creative process. It is a necessary part of your art being "born." And while that is sometimes an uncomfortable, and even painful process, it is also necessary. We can't NOT create in order to avoid the discomfort. The consequences of denying ourselves artistic expression are simply too high.

You Made a Mistake and EVERYONE Knows It (5 Min Read) (By Natalia Shoutova)

Woman Sitting Beside Ice Cream

Maria requested leadership coaching. Having been recently promoted, she found herself struggling to meet her own and team responsibilities.

We talk about Maria's role and she constructs a picture of her cobweb of bosses, peer executives and direct reports. Maria is clearly very busy, yet she hesitates to delegate - "what if they don't do a good job, then it will be my fault - I'd rather be criticised for my own mistakes". I ask Maria - how often do you make mistakes? She answers: "I try very hard to avoid mistakes, but sometimes they slip in. Please don't judge me".

Please don't judge me. My coaching alarm bells start ringing. We continue:

Me: How often are you judged by others at work?

Maria: All the time. They notice every mistake. One major slip-up could mean the end of my career. No one else would employ me.

Me: How often are you openly criticised at work? "Openly" meaning "to your face".

Maria: (Thinks for a while). Not that often, but I think that's because I am quite senior. I think they all notice my mistakes and talk behind my back.

Me: How sizeable are the mistakes you are referring to?

Maria struggles to quantify her mistakes.

Me: On scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is insignificant and 10 is catastrophic. Say 1 is forgetting to double-tie your shoelaces, and 10 is accidentally switching off the life support machine.

Maria: Well, last week I forgot to insert the projected sales figures graph into the Monday morning presentation to the entire executive team. That's about 8 on the scale.

Me: 8? How many people in the meeting commented on this?

Maria: No one. But they must have all noticed and must now think that I am an incompetent idiot.

What do you think is happening here?

Maria's worst critic is herself. When she asked me not to judge her, she was in reality judging herself, feeding her self-doubt, performance anxiety and fear of being found out. She also believes that everyone notices her every mistake and judges her negatively on it. Even more so now that she has been promoted. Maria has a tendency to catastrophise - "No one else would employ me". Her perfectionist streak, anxiety and fear of losing control is driving her into the ground with work overload and exhaustion. Maria has lost perspective on her new role and its responsibilities - she is trying to do two jobs at the same time, bringing the framework of her previous role to her new role. Understandably, looking after her wellbeing has dropped to the bottom of the priority pile.

Have you ever been in Maria's shoes?

There are many themes for discussion here, to which I will return in later posts. In this post, I will focus on the Spotlight Effect.

Spotlight Effect is our tendency to overestimate the impact of our behaviour, appearance and performance on others. Back in 1999, scientists at the Cornell University (Gilovich et al., 2000) carried out a series of experiments on the Spotlight Effect, including one where they arranged for a candidate to arrive late to a meeting wearing an embarrassing t-shirt. They then asked the late candidate to estimate what percentage of people in the meeting had noticed the embarrassing t-shirt.

The candidate estimated 50%. In fact only around 25% noticed the t-shirt. Since we are the centre of our own world, we have a tendency to forget that we are not the centre of everyone else's world. This tendency is especially prominent when we do something atypical.

Maria is acutely aware of every mistake that she makes and she gives disproportionate weigh to its impact. She also assumes that everyone else has the same perception and knowledge of her mistake (self-as-target bias) - she is using her own experiences, thoughts and beliefs to estimate (guess) what the others are thinking. Maria is mind reading. Feeling that she is constantly in the spotlight and a target for criticism puts Maria under an enormous pressure to perform. Ironically, this pressure increases her level of overwhelm and exhaustion, making it more likely that she will make more mistakes.

The first step is to become aware of this bias and to gain perspective. Next time you are caught in the spotlight, ask yourself for concrete evidence of what the others are thinking. Try to remain objective - if you expect a negative response your brain will instinctively look for negative evidence to support your (possibly erroneous) belief. So if no one commented on the absence of the projected sales figures graph, perhaps not everyone noticed. Perhaps no one noticed. Get out of your head and refrain from imposing your thoughts on others. What seems important or embarrassing to you may not be so to others.

Mistakes will happen. It's how you deal with them that counts. Certain mistakes may benefit from timely disclosure to the relevant parties to minimise the negative consequences. Other mistakes require an apology or quick action on your behalf. Others may balloon in your head, but have no actual impact on others. If in doubt, effective and timely communication is crucial. Your integrity and reputation may be at stake. For a recent example, see the VW emissions scandal.

Analyse the actual impact of your mistake - what's the worst that can happen? How important will it be in a month's time? How important is it in the grand scheme of your work? Who else may be affected? When was the previous time you made a similar mistake - what where the consequences and how did you deal with them?

Consider what mitigating measures you can take to minimise the potential damage. What stakeholders do you need to communicate with? Make a concrete plan to resolve the issue. Identify what you can learn from your mistake and how you can adapt your working practices to minimise the chance of it happening again. However, refrain from ruminating on the mistake - churning it in your head will not resolve the matter; conversely, it may further entrench the problematic thought patterns, rather than give you the headspace to come up with a solution.

Remember you have a choice as to how you respond, so take proactive decisions, rather than "head in the sand" or "let's see what happens" approach. Victim-mentality disempowers you.

Challenge your generalisations. "No one will employ me". No one? "They all noticed my mistake" All? What's your evidence for that?

It is important to realise that the negative perception issue originates within you - not from outside. Being too critical of yourself or doubting your abilities will filter how you think other perceive you. It's time for self-building work. And if you find below questions awkward, get a coach to help you.

- Write down three achievements that you are proud of?

- What skills, strengths and talents these demonstrate?

- Write down three challenges that you have overcome?

- Identify what resources and strengths you employed.

- Work out strategies to make more effective use of your skills, strengths and talents.

- What areas could you develop further?

- What work tasks do you shy away from because you lack confidence in your abilities?

- What would help to grow your abilities in this area?

- Come up with concrete strategies to develop your confidence and abilities.

Neglecting your physical and mental wellbeing is a form of self-sabotage. Set aside enough time and headspace to look after your wellbeing - fitness, nutrition, sleep, time for relaxation and holidays. Being on top form will enable you to perform better and feel more positive about yourself. In turn, this will help you to project the best version of yourself to others.

The flip side of the Spotlight Effect is that your positive contributions may also be less noticeable to others than they are to you. So you may need to make more effort to bring them to their attention. Such as the excellent project you have just completed or the fact that your marketing initiative is responsible for the booming sales figures last week.

How You THINK, You Are

While some people possess certain skills, abilities, attributes, and an aptitude, which might be beneficial, and give them, a, so - called, leg - up, on the rest of us, in the vast number of instances, and situations, it's our quality of thinking, which creates, either, a positive, can - do, attitude, or an abundance of weakness, and self - doubt. Those, with self - confidence, and a positive, self - image, generally, start off, with a significant advantage, over those who think, they can't. While your thinking, and thought - processes, are significant, the most essential component, is when one begins with the concept and idea, he will be successful, and begins to behave and act, as a success, does, his potential is exponentially, enhanced! As the adage goes, As you THINK, you are! With that in mind, this article will attempt to briefly examine, review, consider, and discuss, using the mnemonic approach, why this concept is one of the most important, to one's ability to perform, to his potential.

1. Trust; temptation; timely; traction; thoughts: Our thoughts, often, control our actions, and thus, our performance. The more, we trust ourselves, the less likely, one is, to let the temptation, to accept, a short - cut, rather than the best approach. While most procrastinate, because of lack of, optimum, self - confidence, etc, the most successful individuals, proceed, with well - considered, timely action, When one refuses to remain within the limitations of his personal, comfort zone, and expands it, and proceeds, proactively, he begins to gain the necessary traction, to become the best, he can be!

2. Head/ heart; hear: When you have those, intimate, self - conversations, what do you tell yourself, and, precisely, what do you hear, and why? Will you be able to effectively utilize your emotional and logical components, with a head/ heart balance?

3. Inspire; imagine; image; ideas; integrity: While many claim to, few actually, proceed, with the utmost degree of personal integrity! WIll your thoughts inspire you, or be a hindrance? What image do you visualize, and what do you imagine, you can achieve? WIll you use these qualities, to perceive and conceive of, create, develop, and implement, quality actions, based on your ideas?

4. Needs; never: Will you commit, to, never - say - never? Will you identify, and prioritize, your personal goals, and address your needs, in a proactive manner?

5. Knowledge; know: Are you focused - enough, to make knowledge, your friend and ally, so you know, your options and alternatives, and proceed, with the finest judgment, and hopefully, wisdom?

How you THINK, you are! What do you think?

Dealing With Self-Doubt

Have you ever dreamed of doing something bigger than just your standard daily grind? Have you ever wanted to start a business or write a book? Do you ever hear a little voice inside your head? You know the voice. It's your negative alter ego telling you your dreams are just that dreams. The voice tells you you're not smart enough, rich enough, or creative enough. That little voice has plagued me for many years, and it was only recently I got the nerve to tell it to SHUT UP! I will never understand why we all have that little voice, but we all know it is self-doubt. Even the most confident person deals with self-doubt, and it doesn't go away. You can be living your dream, and still have moments you question your capabilities. Even though it may be a lifelong battle, here are some questions to ask yourself when that negative feeling creeps into your mind.

If you never reached your goals, would you be satisfied?

I began to ask myself that question when fear and doubt became crippling. I felt confined to the point I was suffocating. Terror came over me when I thought of never pursuing my dream. That feeling outweighed any doubt or fear that I had that I might fail. The fear of not at least trying lit a fire in me, and I haven't looked back since.

Where did your self-doubt originate?

We are born with a level of confidence, but as we get older, our experiences shape the way we think. Did you have parents or family members that were negative? Were they quitters? Did they predict a negative outcome before even attempting the task? If you've grown up around people with these attitudes, it is hard to break the pattern. Read positive thinking self-help books. Attend events and networking events with people that share the same interests. Surround yourself with people that want to see you win.

Can you accept failure?

We all know failure is a very unpleasant situation. I've read many books and heard lots of speeches embracing failure. Who are they kidding? When you fail, it feels like the whole world is watching and laughing at you. When you have minor successes, no one pays attention. Failure is not an excuse to give up on what you want to do. Keep in mind this relates to attainable goals. If you're trying to be a pilot, but have never taken a flying lesson, that's not attainable. The journey to build something out of nothing is not paved in gold. You will have stumbling blocks along the way. When you stumble, take a step back, regroup, and continue to push through.

I've failed plenty of times, and the more I failed, the louder the voice of self-doubt got. But even though the negative voice was loud, my dream always screamed louder.

The Only Way Affirmations Can Work

Have you ever set out to accomplish goals before? This seems like a silly question for you super achiever doesn't it?

The chances are that you have tried many of them for quite a while. However the more important question is, have you followed through on any of them?

Don't beat yourself up too much if you haven't. Most people don't.

The problem is that even though people think they want something, they dislike change. They find it uncomfortable to change their established behaviors and action patterns. It's scary to step into the territory of unknown after all.

It could also be that what is needed to be done to accomplish those goals is not as glamorous as they first thought. For instance, it's easier to come up with an excuse rather than go to the gym. And as they stay in the inertia for too long, it will get harder and harder to take action every time.

If you want to make affirmations work, you will need to accept the changes you desire.

This seems so fundamental, and yet people delude themselves all the time. Another problem is that they give up way too quickly. If they use an affirmation and don't see results immediately, they pass them off as not working, or it wasn't meant to be.

When affirmations do start to work, people can become fearful of the new result as it is changing who they think they are. Their identities become part of those changes, and that can scare the previous version of themselves.

Another situation that arises is when speaking about your changes or affirmations to others.

They may pass them off as superstition or have other misgivings about the practice. Some people may even tease you about your irrational belief of using them. In the end, you will be the better person as you grow from your journey. This doesn't help in the short-term when people are picking on you about what you are doing.

If you can get past the doubters and even your own self-doubt, you will be well on your way to having something wonderful happen to you. Plus, you will set the stage to have many other wonderful things happen in your life.

You can take command of your life and can repeat this as many times as you want something.

You just need to make sure you are mentally prepared for those changes to occur. Change does not come easily to many and may take a bit of time to break through barriers you hold.

One way to handle change is to start out slowly.

Don't try to enact too many changes at once as this can overwhelm you. Take small incremental steps and get used to each change, then increase them when you feel comfortable in doing so. When you're willing to baby step your way to change, you will eventually arrive your ultimate destination.

Manifestation Secrets

The power of the universe lies in your own mind

Manifestation might seem easy and natural for some but hard for many. Have you ever heard of the phrase "Baby Luck"? Yes, when you were young you may find yourself a lot luckier than you are now as an adult. It was like the universe responded more to you at a younger age than to your current age. The older we grow, the tougher life seems to be. That is natural as we have unknowingly developed negativities and ego along the way in every life experience. Those negative thoughts and ego you built up have blocked you from getting what you want. It gives you doubt in everything you plan to do, clouds your mind, and finally weakens your spirit.

Fear & Disbelief

Even for the people who seem most confident when talking or acting may hide their self-doubt, disbelief, and fear deep in their minds. Those feelings obstruct them from achieving their goals and be the best version of themselves. They become more worried about how they would feel if they fail instead of focusing on achieving their goals. And the universe responds to that fear and manifest it accordingly.

Ego & Arrogance

On the other hand, being arrogant and possess too big an ego would not help with successful manifestation either. People with big ego see nothing more than themselves. They miss all the needed details required for a successful manifestation. Manifesting what you desire requires sensory details. You need to visualize it, feel it, hear it. The clearer the image of what you desire, the faster it would manifest itself to you.

Insight meditation to increase awareness

Practicing your awareness can help you realize negativities before letting it consume you. We may find we screw things up for ourselves just because we let temper take the better of us. When angry, we can not think clearly and tend to say things we would regret later. Even when we don't say anything, negativities arising in our mind emit negative energy to the universe. That energy will attract the same back to us. That explains why we mostly have an unpleasant day when we start our day in a bad mood. Insight meditation helps us aware of any feeling that comes to mind. We can observe it without judging or labelling. No like or dislike. When we put no fuel, no emotion to it, we will see a strong feeling finally die down or dissolve itself after a while. That would leave your mind with the positive thought or at least the neutral feeling.

Stay positive!

All it takes for you to get what you want out of life is to learn to communicate with the universe, with your inner self, with you subconscious mind. Always stay pleasant and you will emit positive vibe around you that would send a signal to the universe and attract more good things into your life, like a magnet. You need to be crystal clear about what you want, able to visualize it, feel it, and commit to it to let the universe know that is what you want. You then vibrate the right energy to the universe, and the law of attraction will work the magic for you.

How To Overcome Self Doubt

It is evident that learning how to overcome self-doubt and fear is one of the hardest challenges we may encounter in life. Just how good is our performance depends a lot on how much confidence we have in ourselves because insecurity is an unusual kind of inner torture that can sneak easily in.
Therefore, how do you overcome the doubts, uncertainties, and fears that are overwhelming your thoughts? What can you do to believe in yourself to achieve more? How can you conquer the self-doubt that is holding you back from succeeding?

Self-doubt is a place where we have all been but, each of us handles it differently. Doubt and fear are hard to control and usually creep in deep within our mind. A wrong decision, a mistake or even a little failure make you hesitate and question your abilities. Next thing you know, you have a lack of confidence.

When you start a business or have a concept, self-doubt often crawls in while you begin to both comparing yourself to those who succeeded before you and being crushed by the idea of how much work you have to put in. At that point, you even begin to think that there is no way you will ever be able to make it as successful people have.

But success is getting the courage to move in the direction of your dreams and on the path that your heart is taking you. Never mind if you are not making it exactly like others before you have. You have to understand that self-doubt is not a rational behavior and you can go beyond it.

A Fact about Self-Doubt

"Self-doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will." - Suzy Kassem
None of us will ever be completely free of doubts. Everyone, no matter how successful, fights with it sometimes. But self-doubt can become a self-fulfilling prediction if you let it take over. You may have tried in the past to achieve some goal and decided to abandon because you faced an apparently impossible wall, but you should not give up.

It is just how life is! Goals get you out of the comfort zone, bring you into new territory and take you head-on with your doubts and fears. The concern here is not about how to escape self-doubt or fear, but how to make constructive choices that improve your self-confidence while uncertainties are present.

Too many people give up on their dreams due to self-doubt, uncertainty, lack of confidence and fear.

Going Beyond Self-Doubt and Fear
Almost all successful people have confessed they had to fight self-doubt every single day. Doubt is so toxic that it holds back countless of people from achieving beautiful things. And fear is not at all who you are, but rather a feeling that you are going through, an experience.

If you are trying to avoid doubt or fear, it does not make them go away. When you ignore these feelings, it does not make them any less painful, and if you look the other way, it does not make them vanish into thin air.

Therefore, take a deep breath. And realize that even if you are having doubts or a profound fear reaches you, you still need to take action. Stop self-doubt from overwhelming you and take the required steps to move forward in accomplishing your goals.

Overcoming Self-Doubt
How to remove doubts on the spot is always easier said than done. But below are ways so you can start overcoming self-doubt to achieve the things you have always desired.

Remove Wrong Words
You have to remove any words that seem wrong from your vocabulary. The terms, phrases, and words you use to talk to yourself have the power to blow your confidence away. Those incorrect words are often untrue.

So, eliminate and skip words such as "never," "always," "can't," "no one," "if," or "should." You will then notice how your frame of mind and self-doubt begin to change for better.

Identify Self-Doubt
You have to identify doubts which are not an easy thing to do. You might have a great idea to create a business, a website, or even an app. Yet, you might brush it off by thinking that you cannot just quit your job to jump into something else. You have a family and a loan to pay. And who will pay the bills?

Of course, there are always risks. But if you do not believe that you can be successful, guess what, you won't. So, next time you push an idea aside, sincerely think if it is self-doubt or reality that sneaked in.

Get a Dose of Inspiration
Get inspired by listening to podcasts, viewing videos, reading books, and watching movies which are optimistic. It can help you overcome any of your doubts and fears. You might also feel empowered to take action.

You can also discover some great speakers and mentors to listen to. Turn to these guys when you lack self-confidence.

Overcome Self-Doubt

Dumber people have succeeded also. You have to remind yourself that you are a capable and smart person. The reason is that there are people in this world who have achieved bigger things with less knowledge, tools, chances, and experience than you have.

You have to remind yourself that people with less advantage than you became successful. No dream or idea of yours is impossible or even unmanageable. Most of the time, the barrier you need to overcome is self-doubt.

Focus on Previous Achievements
As you wake up or during the day, are you focusing on the negative like the failures you have experienced? Or on the positive such as the victories you have achieved?

It is important because recent studies revealed that how you remember your past defines how you think about yourself today. Your thoughts about yourself have a huge impact on whatever actions you take afterwards and how well they turn out for you.

Look for Feedback
It is always good to seek feedback from others. To have a conversation with those who support you and are around you about your skills and abilities can end self-doubt right on the spot.

And above all, getting feedback helps you see both the positive and negative aspects of your abilities. As a result, you can improve some of the necessary skills.

Be aware of Doubt from Others
Self-doubt is already hard to deal with, but doubts coming from other people are just painful. When you realize that you start to get more confidence in yourself and your abilities, you might notice other people around you, often closer than you think who project their self-doubt on you.

They will undoubtedly try to shoot down your dreams or even find reasons why you should not pursue them. But let me tell you to act on your ideas anyway.

Celebrate Small Wins
At any time you are stuck in the depths of self-doubt, it consumes you. Even if in reality, it is not real, you make it accurate and turn it into a big deal in your mind. It took you a series of small actions to drop to that level.

Well, it will also take small but essential actions to get out. When you celebrate small wins, it motivates you because you see progress being made, and build momentum which adds up quickly.

More Tips to Overcome Self Doubt

  • Self-doubt is challenging to overcome, but it can be done by pretty much anyone who has the will.
  • Brainstorm every action, process, or a bit of effort that you think could help achieving success.
  • Note all the things and skills you know how to do or that you could quickly learn.
  • Start learning and implementing these new skills and abilities.
  • Believe you can perform better actually to perform better.
  • Draw your motivation from the right well, so focus on actions that get results.
  • Get away from self-doubt by taking small actions that lead to success and build on the next one.
  • Release that inner genius and ignore criticism and self-doubt.

It is quite easy not even to start or give up when other people tell you that you cannot do it, or that it is an impossible dream, or that it is unrealistic, but use their doubts as motivation for you to show them wrong.
A sign of self-doubt is when you let the opinions and self-doubt of others influence you to take action on your dream or idea. You have to choose your thoughts wisely because they become your emotions which in turn dictate your actions.

Undeniably, doubts will show up into your mind. So, to overcome self-doubt, you have to choose not to believe the thoughts that give you these doubts. Uncertainties, fears, and doubts will always be part of your life, but you are the one who chooses whether or not to believe them.

The Key To Success Is Knowing The Last Door Is Always The Best One

Unconscious Self-Sabotage

The struggle people often face is staying committed to their goals long after the novelty has worn off.

I've heard reasons people give up on their goals such as: "It wasn't meant to be" or "It wasn't fun anymore" or "Life is about having fun."

The point worth emphasising is that we can create all the reasons in the world for not following through on our commitments and find evidence to support it.

But is this how you want to live your life? Hiding behind your doubts and insecurities just to feel better?

We don't want to be wrong and will give up on a goal rather than risk looking foolish to ourselves. Known as confirmation bias, it is the tendency to look for evidence or evaluate information in a way to confirm your bias.

Let's be honest, we're all prone to it and just because I'm writing this article I'm not immune from it. The key is to be aware and take the right action, so we don't fall into our comfort zone while our goals slip away from us.

Your beliefs about success will help or hinder your progress.

They may be unconscious, meaning you formed beliefs you are unaware of and are looking for evidence to support them thus self-sabotaging your efforts to succeed.

I like author Larry Weidel's definition of what success entails: "Success has two rules: 1. Pay full price. 2. Pay in advance."

Countless biographies about successful people line the bookshelves where the narrative seldom involves an easy path.

Let's be clear, success is built on discipline, hard work, perseverance, grit, will and courage.

"To succeed, always remember that the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing," is the advice echoed by motivational author Brendon Burchard in his recent book High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way.

The Chase For Success

It is almost certain you will fail while pursuing your goals.

It is almost certain you will want to give up.

It is almost certain you will experience mental and emotional distress.

It is almost certain you will neglect your health, family, and relationships, investing all your time pursuing your goal.

However, Brendon Burchard believes "A warrior's destiny is greater than his wounds."

Let's be clear on what success is. It can relate to areas of life where progress is reached. It is not defined by material wealth, nor fame or international recognition alone.

Vishen Lakhiani explains in The Code of the Extraordinary Mind: 10 Unconventional Laws to Redefine Your Life and Succeed On Your Own Terms: "I came to the conclusion that the way we define success, centred only on the two metrics of money and power, is just a very inadequate way to define life."

"It's like trying to sit on a two-legged stool-sooner or later, we topple over. And that's when I came up with this idea of the third metric of success, which consists of four pillars: well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving."

In a similar vein, it was Bob Dylan who said: "A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do."

Yet, success is fickle.

We pursue it believing it holds the key to our happiness.

We pursue it to make up for our shortfalls and hide behind wealth and fame to make up for our childhood insecurities.

We chase success believing once we reach it we will be: complete, fulfilled, happy, recognised and better off. However, if success is pursued for the wrong reason, we amplify the self-doubt present within us.

A Sense of Purpose and Meaning

Author and businessman T Harv Ecker said: "It's is bad enough being a prick, but being a prick with millions of dollars is far worse. You're bound to use your power and wealth to justify your self-worth."

In a similar view, what happens to a millionaire's self-esteem if they go bankrupt? The same thing that happens to elite athletes when they're injured; a deflated self-worth resulting in depression and anger.

They learned to identify with their performance alone while neglecting their human qualities. I'm not suggesting it's their fault because seconds count when it comes to a gold medal.

We want to reach success for the right reasons and be fulfilled on all levels. Success is not the answer if you're looking to ease your problems. It will only compound your problems if you pursue it blindly.

You might think from the tone of the article I am opposed to success. Quite the contrary, I enjoy success and embrace it for what it brings to my life. It has allowed me to help others realise their greatness and potential, however small or big.

The story of success reminds me of The Fisherman and the Businessman tale told in countless business books.

Success requires us to be purposeful about our lives according to Brendon Burchard: "Be more intentional about who you want to become. Have vision beyond your current circumstances. Imagine your best future self and start acting like that person today."

The last door is always the best one because if you stay committed to your goals and pursue them with determination, vigour and courage, your efforts will be rewarded.

Success shapes a man.

It promotes his sense of self and instils purpose and meaning in his life. Success is the expansion of life coursing through you. It needs to grow and cultivate new beginnings so it may know its creative potential.

It can only do so through you as the vessel to know its creative force.

The last door is the only door that matters.

Only then you realise that every closed door, every missed opportunity, every setback and failed attempt was perfectly orchestrated to lead you to the last door of success.

Make it splendid and stay passionate and enthusiastic, to walk through the door and become someone you appreciate in the mirror each morning.

10 Keys to Being Hilariously Happy

dog-animal-greyhound-983014.jpg

What makes someone happy? One might think that winning the lottery is the answer. Just think about everything that we can buy or pay off with those winnings and the joy it might bring. Have you seen the odds of winning the lottery!? Who says obtaining happiness has needs to be so expensive or hard to come by? Considering the national average household income, we just don't make enough money if consumerism is the key to happiness. Perhaps he who dies with the most toys, leaves the beneficiary happy? Is it possible then, that happiness is a state of being, and not a state of having?

Life is short, isn't the meaning of life to have a life with meaning? A life worth living? A life of joy and happiness? The most practical and common sense way to bring forth true happiness in life is to LEARN to LAUGH. What exactly does it mean to Learn to Laugh? The acronym is quite simple.

L: Learn; keep learning new things, maintain that childhood curiosity that encourages you to go outside of your comfort zone and try something new.

E: Encourage positive feelings, emotions and thoughts. Always look for whats good in the situation and find the lesson. There is never failure, only a failed attempt.

A: Awareness of the present moment. Let the past go and don't worry about the future. Pay attention to the intricacies of the present moment. Use your senses to enjoy and embrace everything that is happening in this very moment and soak it all in. It is important to have goals and direction in life, but the future is unwritten and choices in the present moment is what determines your future. If you want a happy future, be happy in the now.

R: Resilience; when something goes wrong, be ready to bounce back and recover as fast as you can. Shift your mood and perspective to being flexible and open to multiple solutions.

N: Neutral; remain impartial in your situations, take the seat of the observer and see everything from an objective standpoint. In the grand scheme of things; look at the beginning, middle and end broadly and separate the personal out of the situation, choose to respond rationally and not react emotionally.

L: Love your surroundings, people, places, everything. Good manners go long distances, a simple smile can change someone's day entirely, and a kind gesture works wonders. Little acts of kindness are expressions of love and are greatly needed in this world. Most importantly: LOVE YOURSELF, make sure to take good care of your body, exercise, eat healthy, be kind to yourself.

A: Accept and embrace who you are, for everything that you are. This includes your unique differences and those of others. See any circumstance as an opportunity for growth even if it is unpleasant. You don't have to agree, but accepting that the person or circumstance is simply the way that it is and seeking to learn from it/them is a vital key.

U: Unleash inhibitions! Break down the barriers that are holding you back from achieving success and happiness. I'm talking about the self-doubt, the insecurity, crippling self-conscious feelings.

G: Gratefulness for everything & everyone in your life. When you are grateful it draws your attention away from feelings of lack or not having or being enough. It allows you to appreciate all that you have and all that you are as a person. Realising all the resources you have allows you to see how full your metaphoric cup actually is.

H: Help others and be part of something bigger. Give some of your time, talents or resources to someone who could benefit. Your talent and kindness, no matter how small it is to you, could be the type of medicine that they really needed.

Happiness doesn't have to be such a rare thing. It is not as elusive as people might think. When you LEARN to LAUGH, you will easily find more joy and happiness in your life and spread the happiness among those you interact with. Let happiness become infectious, and laughter be your best medicine.

How to Initiate Miracles in Your Daily Life

Rainbow

How do you set your dreams in the manifestation process and bring about a miracle? Forming unshakable beliefs around your goals, connecting to Higher Power and being a vibrational match for the Universe are some of the criteria that really help along with other factors. In this article, I give you two simple and natural ways you can do that and eventually bring to you your miracle goals.

Believing in Yourself

When you want to bring about a miracle dream goal, one of the best things you can do is simply believing in yourself and trusting that it will happen in its own good time in the right way. Just try to stick with it long enough with minimal negative thoughts, and you will be fine. Do not bring worry and self-doubt into the equation because it will only delay the process.

Most of the time the only barrier standing between you and the thing you want badly is lack of enough faith. Develop that faith, and peace will envelope you while your dream goal gets manifested.

Believing in yourself and having the required faith are what you will really need to bring something you want badly into existence. There is power in both of them; so remember to take them into account whenever you get screwed up and find enough value in yourself to develop them both and just trust what will unfurl. I promise that you will be rewarded with your miracle because I have been through it myself.

Asking the Right Questions

Now what do I mean by that? That is, whatever the situation is - ideal or nonideal - you should try asking the right questions to manifest your big miracle desires. Now how do you do that? Most importantly, they should carry a positive tone. For example, "How can I find the time to learn new skills for this job? or "What have I to learn from this situation? " or "How can I put more effort into my weight loss scheme?" Try to ask positive questions in a session and then forget them.

Later when you remember about your burning miracle, affirm it like this: "The answer will come to me. I am almost there... " And let go and forget. Every time you remember about it, affirm it and let go.

With the will of God/Divine Source/Higher Power, it will be manifested in your real life in its own good time. Don't doubt it anytime but remain calm and at ease, forgetting it as much as you can. That is because you know you have asked the right questions and affirmed them and have let gone of them in worthy separate sessions so that you have simply nothing to worry about but simply be in the knowhow that it will appear in your life shortly.

I find this method the easiest and most effective, and it works for me well too. So personally, I use it more often. Since it is a blessing for me, chances are it will work well for you as well.

To sum up, the above two tips are great for initiating miracles.

Life Lessons: How to Live Courageously

The first thing we need to do when it comes to living more courageously is to understand what courage is and what it is not

There are a lot of misconceptions around the word, and many of us go through life never really understanding what it means to have courage or to be courageous.

From our earliest years we have known of people who are courageous. They might be real people we know, or simply know about, people who have won through despite the challenges or the odds. Or they might be fictional characters we've seen on television or read about in books. Usually they are people who don't seem to feel the fear that we feel. But if we reflect for a moment, we may just realize that fear itself isn't the actual problem. It just might be our relationship with fear that keeps us from being courageous.

Courageous Preconceptions

Most of us like and admire courageous people. We want to be like them -- or at least feel like them. We want to never have to suffer fear, self-doubt, or anxiety again. The problem is that most of us will never experience this perfect 'fearless' self. That sort of courage might exist in story books and movies, but it is not real.

Psychologists now largely agree that courage is not the absence of fear; it is the determination to take action even in the presence of fear. It is pushing on, despite the fear, because you have a goal that you believe is worth the effort and discomfort. So many people feel bad about themselves for being afraid or anxious. They believe 'courageous' people simply don't experience these emotions. But they do. The real difference is that courageous people just don't allow their feelings of fear prevent them from doing what they really want to do. Courageous people do uncomfortable, knee-shaking things all the time, and they, too, feel fear. It's just that they consider their fear and discomfort to be a necessary part of living a full life, and so they push on, in spite of it.

It is natural to feel nervous on a first date, or at a first kiss. Driving for the first time can be both intimidating and exciting. The first day at school or in a new job can be absolutely terrifying! Yet fear is part of what makes these experiences meaningful. As Mark Twain once said, 'Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear -- not absence of fear'.

Normalizing Discomfort

One of the most important things to understand about fear, is that it is never going to completely go away. It's part of every single human being's emotional vocabulary, our repertoire of feelings. Doing something new, something daring, something important, is always going to challenge you, often bringing with it those feelings we know as 'fear'.

According to Brené Brown, qualitative researcher and TEDx speaker, when we try to repress one emotion -- such as fear or shame -- we effectively numb all other emotions, even positive ones like joy, excitement, and even love.

Simply avoiding fear triggers -- snakes, job changes, public speaking, or a difficult mother-in-law, for example -- is no solution. Run, and you'll be forever running. Instead, Brown encourages people to face their feelings of vulnerability, and see them as a crucial part of being human -- courageous and daring -- even if it means opening up to judgement, hurt or disappointment.

Being daring is all about leaving your comfort zone and jumping into the arena of life. Choosing to live how you want and being yourself can be uncomfortable at times. Understanding and accepting your feelings of discomfort are the first steps to being truly courageous.

Prepare Yourself

What gives a person courage can be deceptively simple at times. When you are feeling challenged in reaching a goal, realizing a dream, or making a decision (be it asking someone out on a date or climbing Mount Everest), sitting down and scribbling a list of what you need in order to move forward can be really helpful.

If you want to be a writer, and you haven't written anything since high school, then of course writing a novel is bound to feel overwhelming, even terrifying. What about joining a writer's group, or taking a single weekend workshop in writing where you'll meet others struggling with similar difficulties? The trick lies in beginning -- and then keeping on. Take things one chunk, one step at a time. Begin with those first few steps and let yourself be surprised by your own ability. If you're feeling nervous about asking someone out on a date, ask yourself what would help you feel more confident -- a new haircut, your best pair of shoes, a session at the gym? Off the top of your head, what are the two or three things that would make the biggest difference to you feeling braver?

Maybe you need more support, a new location, some more training, or just a new attitude. Perhaps it's something concrete and basic, like equipment, software, clothes, licensing, or money. What are the first things you need to prepare in order to bring just a bit more courage into your life and help you realize your dreams? Don't let this be an excuse for inaction, telling yourself you just can't do it because you don't have this or that yet. Decide what you need -- and then go for it!

Telling Stories

Our lives can be either enhanced or restricted by the stories we tell ourselves. A single, isolated event that produced feelings of intimidation or fear can alter a person's story, casting him or her into the role of victim, a role in which they live their life believing they are small, afraid and weak. A whole sense of identity can be based on such negative experiences. But it really doesn't need to be this way. It is within our power to change our stories, and we can do this whenever we choose. Here expert hypnotherapy can help clear past programing so that you can move forward, writing your own story.

You are the author of your life. Make a decision about how you want to progress with your life: who do you want to become from now on. When things are getting tough, take another look at your situation, your script. See it from another perspective. Remember to acknowledge your accomplishments, your talents and your gifts. Write a list of the times when you have pushed through in spite of fear or anxiety, times when you acted courageously or in a more confident manner than usual. Is there a pattern? What can you learn from these experiences that you can apply going forward?

In your present circumstance, see yourself now as a person who is doing something (or contemplating doing something) that scares not only you, but possibly other people, as well. Maybe you'll want to overcome your fear of public speaking by joining a group of like-minded people in Toastmasters International, or be really brave and challenge your fear of heights by skydiving or bungy jumping. Hypnotherapy can be really useful here, too, helping you to condition your mind to let go of past experience, face your fears, and live much more in the now. Mindfulness can help, too. How about something a little less challenging to begin with? Learning to cook or ride a unicycle? You get the idea.

No matter the roadblocks, the setbacks, or the anxiety, praise yourself. You are ahead of the rest of the crowd who are not yet willing to try. Consider the worst case scenario, the one where you crash and burn and fail in every possible way. How bad is that, really? What is the positive that might come from that experience? Going there in your mind can de-sensitize the subconscious fear response, lessening the anxiety. This really can take the venom out of the deepest fear; it demonstrates that even if the worst came to the worst, life still goes on; we will survive. Ask yourself to think of three or four positive things that you might get from such a worse case scenario that will help you going forward. Mental rehearsal in which you succeed can be a powerful way of conditioning the mind to do just that.

Living courageously takes effort. It takes practice. But each time you do it you increase your inner steel, you win through and grow stronger. Go ahead now -- strike out! You just might surprise yourself.

Stop Harbouring Self-Doubt

I always joke about letting the haters motivate you. Everybody has that in their life, people who doubt them or make them feel less than they are. It just takes faith and belief in yourself, and you’ve got to dig deep into that. That has to come from you – nobody’s going to give you that. – Jennifer Lopez

Standing Up for Yourself - How to Overcome Manipulation

5 Ways to Recover From Terrible Failure

Angry, Mad, Upset, Person, Young, Woman, Isolated

Failure can cause one to lose confidence and motivation. Failure can sometimes wreck havoc on our emotions and make us feel depressed. What is worse is that after failing most of us do not always wish to try again because of the negative emotions that we feel. Failure makes us avoid trying again. This can happen on a conscious and unconscious level. It is thus important that you manage what you perceive as failure well in your life to ensure that failure doesn't affect you on an unconscious level and affect your future performance as you try and achieve your goals. Some of the emotions that we experience that affect our ability to take action to create the outcomes that we seek are due to past failures. These emotions may include fear, self-doubt and a lack of confidence.

I have developed a few ways that you can use in your life to recover from failure and heal yourself so that your past failures do not affect your future performance. Here they are:

1. Manage emotions using acceptance

What we perceive as failure can cause us to have a lot of emotional strain. We may experience emotions ranging from anger to sadness and resentment depending on what the situation is. After failing it is not always possible to keep these emotions from affecting us. To recover from failure and keep these emotions under control you need to use acceptance. You need to accept that things did not go well and that there might be consequences to be dealt with from whatever that has happened. Depending on the situation, consequences as the result of failure might vary -; you might be criticised, you might be held accountable, you might have lost money, you might lose your self-confidence, you might lose your job or business. Whatever it is and whatever the consequences are, drive yourself towards acceptance because this is the only way in which you will better find creative solutions to the challenges that you might be facing. It is tempting when we face challenges to dwell on the emotional pain, to think and go over what ifs but ultimately we have no choice but to make decisions and act if we are to change our circumstances.

2. View failure as an isolated incident not an inclusive incident

In our lives sometimes we have what I call "cross contamination". When one area of our lives isn't working as well we wish it could, the unhappiness and emotional strain that we experience from the area which isn't working well gets carried across other areas of our lives. We begin to feel like nothing else in our lives is working. Cross contamination causes us to carry emotional strain from work or business to our family lives and ultimately to our health and well being. The opposite can happen as emotional strain from our family lives can sometimes extend to our workplace and ultimately our well being depending on how we respond to the problems that we face.

You need to view the specific failure that you are recovering from as an isolated incident in order to stop this from straining other areas in your life. This is not easy to do as sometimes having a bad day at work can mean a bad evening with the family or vice versa. However, if you learn to better manage your emotions and isolate problems in various areas of your life, you might be in a better position to prevent emotional strain from one area of your life to cross contaminate all other areas of your life. This can only be done through improved self-awareness and emotional discipline.

Sometimes failing in a specific area can make you feel as if you failing at everything. You need to be aware that failure in a specific area in your life doesn't mean that you will fail on every other area. So see each failure as specific and not inclusive.

3. View failure as feedback from your specific actions

After following step 1 and 2 above you should begin to be in a better emotional state to think constructively about what went wrong and what has not worked well to cause the outcomes that you did not want. With this improved emotional state you should now use failure as a learning by analyzing what really went wrong and what actions you could have taken to improve your results. Most failures are due to a lack of planning, processes that did not work well, unforeseen circumstances, failure to be pro-active and so on. This is now time for you to diagnose what didn't work with clear emotions and an open mind. So assess what went wrong and identify things that need to be improved for you to create better results in the future.

4. Commit to new actions

After diagnosing your failure and receiving feedback from it you need to commit yourself to new actions in order to fully recover from your failure. Ask yourself what you will do and no longer do as a result of the feedback you received from your failure then commit yourself to new resolutions. You can list things you will do such as early planning, better communication, improve processes etc. Listing things that you will no longer do that might have caused you to fail is as important. So also list things that you will not do in the future such as procrastinating, avoiding administrative work, communicating poorly and so on.

What is important to note is that committing to new actions will also give you an emotional boost and hope. Often when we are in distress just thinking of the next practical step to take is enough to help us have hope for better future results.

5. Remember your past successes

Remembering things you did well in the past can help you gather strength to recover from immediate failure. Have things worked well in the past? Is there historical performance that you can look to and be proud of? if so, list these great achievements and performances and make them more prominent in your mind. Remember how you felt when things worked well and rekindle these feelings to gather strength to overcome present challenges. This will help you regain your self-confidence as you plan how to better deal with the future.

Imagine what your life would be like if you had self-confidence and did not hesitate to act and create all the outcomes that you want in life. Picture yourself believing in yourself and becoming exactly who you want to be. A successful man or woman who is happy doing things that he or she loves and has great relationships. No more would you have to suffer from second guessing yourself and taking the back seat, criticizing yourself or enduring the pain of those that criticize you and do not appreciate you...

Learn How to Detoxify Your Mind For Success

Women's White Top and Orange Floral Skirt

The definition of toxic waste is, and I quote, "unwanted chemicals that are the result of manufacturing or industry and that are poisonous to living things." (Webster Dictionary "Toxic Waste.") Close quote. This type of waste is so toxic that it's put in special containers and buried deep within the Earth. Nobody wants to live near it because of its poisonous side effects. There is a different type of toxic waste that I am going to share with you today; it does not deal with the environment, but an inner poison that will destroy your self-esteem and the will-power to succeed. Yes, it is contagious through your attitude and actions. You will learn how to detoxify your mind from this poison, so that you can re-program your mind for success.

1. Attitude

No one wants to be around a person who is in a bad mood. There is a scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where Kylo Ren sees an empty chair in the interrogation room, in a burst of outrage, he immediately starts destroying the room with his lightsaber, because Rey managed to escape. Two Stormtroopers approached the room, but turned around to avoid the rage of Kylo Ren. When you are in a bad mood, chances are, you will put everybody else around you, in a bad mood.

2. Actions

You become a toxic waste to everyone else through your actions. In the self-improvement field, we call it self-defeat and it starts by one person admitting defeat before an event takes place. When there is evidence of self-doubt among a group, it is caused by one person, who spends most of their time in toxic waste, metaphorically speaking. They would share their poison by making these statements:

A. Why even bother, we would just lose anyway.

B. They are smarter and talented than we are.

C. This project is a waste of time, let's go and do something else that is fun.

I will show you how to detoxify your mind from these toxic wastes so that you can succeed and be a leader among your family and friends. There is a movie clip from "Facing the Giants," that is posted on YouTube. During this clip, one of the players was asking their coach a question about a particular team they were going to play later in the football season. Without hesitation, the team captain (Brock) spoke and showed signs of defeat because that team was far superior than they were. The coach had Brock come forward and wanted him to do the "death crawl," but there was a catch to it, Brock had to carry another player on his back and be blind-folded at the same time. The coach did not put a limit on how far Brock is supposed to go, instead, the coach said, "I want to see your absolute best." Close quote. As Brock began the death crawl, he had no problems at first, but as he continued on, fatigue started to creep in and soon, thoughts of quitting filled his mind. Brock begged his coach to stop; the fire and pain were taking a toll on Brock's body, the coach replied, "Then let it burn!" Close quote.

This is my message to you, burn all that personal, toxic waste that is preventing you from moving forward in life. The treatment and cure for your personal, toxic waste is to forget yourself and go to work, do not make any excuses of why you cannot complete a certain project. Have someone at your side, get an item, or be in a certain place that will inspire you to greater heights, so that your day is filled with peace and happiness.

Starting today, learn how to detoxify your mind and be a better person.
