The Illusion Of Value

Imagine you're on a game show, and you can choose between two prizes: a diamond or bottle of water! It's an easy choice. The diamonds are clearly more valuable. Now imagine being given the same choice again, only this time, you're not on a game show, but dehydrated in the desert after wandering for days. Do you choose differently? Why? Aren't diamonds still more valuable?

This is the paradox of value, famously described by pioneering economist Adam Smith. And what it tells us is that defining value is not simple as it seems.

On the game show, you were thinking about each item's exchange value, what you could obtain for them at a later time, but in emergency, like the desert scenario, what matters far more is their use value, how helpful they are in your current situation. And because we only get to choose one of the options, we also have to consider its opportunity cost, or what we lose by giving up the other choice. After all, it doesn't matter how much you could get from selling the diamond if you never make it out of the desert.

Most modern economists ideal with the paradox of value by attempting to unify these considerations under the concept of utility, how well something satisfies a person's wants or needs.

The utility can apply to anything from the basic need for food to the pleasure of hearing a favorite song, and will naturally vary for different people and circumstances.

A market economy provides us with an easy way to track utility. Put simply, the utility something has to you is reflected by how much you'd be willing to pay for it.

Now imagine yourself back in the desert, only this time, you get offered a new diamond or a fresh bottle of water every five minutes. If you're like most people, you'll first choose enough water to last the trip, and then as many diamonds as you can carry. This is because of something called the marginal utility, and it means that when you choose between diamonds and water, you compare utility obtained from every additional bottle of water to every additional diamond. And you do this each time an offer is made.

The first bottle of water is worth more to you than any amount of diamonds, but eventually, you have all water you need. After a while, every additional bottle becomes a burden. That's when you begin to choose diamonds over water.

And it's not just necessities like water. When it comes to most things, the more of it you acquire, the less useful or enjoyable every additional bit becomes. This is the law of diminishing marginal utility.

You might gladly buy two or three helpings of your favorite food, but the fourth would make you nauseated, and the hundredth would spoil before you could even get to it. Or you could pay to see the same movie over and over until you got bored of it or spent all of your money. Either way, you'd eventually reach a point where the marginal utility of buying another movie ticket became zero.

Utility applies not just to buy things, but to all our decisions. And the intuitive way to maximize it and avoid diminishing returns is to vary the way we spend our time and resources. After our basic needs are met, we'd theoretically decide to invest in choices only to the point they're useful or enjoyable.

Of course, how effectively any of us manage to maximize utility in real life is another matter. But it helps to remember that the ultimate source of value comes from us, the needs we share, the things we enjoy, and the choices we make

Just Because It Feels Right Doesn't Make It Right (By Tim Connor)

You would be amazed at how many people let their feelings rather than common sense or reality determine their attitudes, behavior, and decisions. Now, I'm not implying that all feelings are not appropriate or don't have value when it comes to life and career choices and actions but in a world driven today by so many emotional circumstances you might just want to pause or even check your feelings at the door before you make serious decisions or react or respond to various situations.

Let me give you a couple of real examples that I have witnessed in the past several days while on the road speaking in several states.

Flying back from Oklahoma a few weeks ago, the gate agent seemed to be in a depressed mood. They just weren't very friendly, accommodating or interested in my question. So, being who I am I tried to make them laugh with a simple and straight-forward comment (innocent and non-threatening in any way). Well - they jumped all over me with "Who do you think you are talking to me that way? I don't have to put up with your crap. I can't believe anyone could be that insensitive." Etc. Etc.

Needless to say, I ended the conversation and headed back to my seat and opened my book and started reading.

While eating lunch at a restaurant I overheard the couple behind me give the server the "you better or else" treatment because they didn't bring the bread to the table fast enough. They then complained to the manager (where everyone within earshot could hear) about the experience and saying the person should be fired.

Ever had anyone blow up at you when what you said or didn't say or did or didn't do that was as kind, compassionate, simple etc. that even someone from another planet would not interpret incorrectly but they did?

Folks, just because you are in a hurry and behind me in line doesn't mean I have to rush the person in front of me.

Just because it's raining, and you don't like rain doesn't mean I have to listen to your ranting and raving about rain. Just because I am an insensitive idiot doesn't mean you have to put up with me and don't have the right to walk away or leave the room.

But, it doesn't help when we "lose it" regardless of the importance or lack of it in any situation. And believe me, we are living at a time when a lot of folks have really thin skin or any number of rules, expectations or guidelines as to what is acceptable or even allowed currently in today's world according to their values, beliefs etc. no matter how far out of reality they might be.

Don't believe me? I have over 3000+ articles on a variety of various global websites and add several new ones each week and believe me - I get at least ten emails a day from someone around the world who takes issue with what I have said or how I have said it. Get over it...

Trust me - I'm not implying that I am right, the smartest person in the Universe, the most experienced, the best at anything or even smarter than you - but I do have the right to share my opinion, idea, comment - whatever - and yes you have the right to comment back to me about it - but let me ask you - do you really think you help your cause by making it (your disagreement with me) public to everyone - everywhere?

When we let our feelings - which are nothing more than internal emotional expressions of beliefs, values, attitudes, expectations, rules etc. shared in an external way - we might want to consider that the person in front of us, behind us or even next to us, just is not interested in our ranting, raving or our opinion.

I have seen more people on social media sites share personal stuff that I just can't believe that they would want out there in public. Do you really think most people care that you were dumped? Do you think most people care that I am lonely, angry, frustrated - whatever? Yes, maybe a few close friends, relatives or maybe even co-workers or clients might care or have an interest - but the whole world?

Do you really need that much attention? Are you really that insecure? Are you really that needy? Are you really that narcissistic?

We all have life issues, challenges, problems, disappointments, failures, losses, frustrations etc. But do you really think the entire world gives a crap about all of your stuff?

Again, it's simple - if you don't like my article - stop reading. Throw it away. Delete it - whatever. If you don't like the movie - leave. If you don't like the TV show - use the remote. If you don't like the noise in the restaurant - leave. If you disagree with someone on a social media site - delete them, unfriend them, unfollow them.

It's not that complicated.

If I care, I care and if I don't I don't. If I do it's because you and I are emotionally connected in some way. If I don't that doesn't make me disrespectful, uncompassionate or any other negative emotional response.

There is an incredible amount of pain and suffering everywhere in the world today. I've seen it in every one of the 45 counties I have spoken in or visited. Hunger, death, pain, loss, suffering etc. is rampant everywhere in the world and even in our country. I can't be there for everyone, but I can be there for the people that matter in my life or I know personally. This doesn't mean I am not aware or sensitive to all of the global, national or community pain and wrongdoing but none of us have the capacity to spend our time and life just feeling for what everyone around us is feeling or experiencing while disregarding our own lives.

I don't care if it's the ASPA, St. Jude, Shriners or Savelives.com. I can't be there for everyone and everyone can't be there for me.

I don't know about you but the continuous expression on social media by people who feel they are experiencing unique life challenges that the rest of us have never had to deal with - well, trust me - I've been there and so have you.

Never Let Anyone, Including Yourself, Diminish Your Confidence

I was talking to an influential woman recently who shared with me that she felt that women were often their own worst enemies. She shared an event where she promoted a woman in her company and the woman's reaction was "Really? You think I am ready? Wow.". She also promoted a man and his reaction was quite distinct. He said, "Thank you for recognizing my achievements and hard work." Same situation, different reactions. The man's was one of confidence and the woman's was one of a weak relationship to her own value and confidence.

I would have to speak to her to find out what happened to her or why she had diminished confidence. I can tell you in all my work with women, this is not uncommon. Women often downplay their worth which shows up in not negotiating and standing for a salary they deserve (only 7% of women negotiate for their salaries compared to 53% of men). It also shows up in not getting positions they want and deserve.

One of the most common symptom of this diminished confidence occurs when a woman is acknowledged. Often her reaction is to downplay it, give credit somewhere other than with herself or to say thank you to be polite but have thoughts about being a fraud.

Some other symptoms of diminished confidence are (list not comprehensive):

  • You have a recurring sinking feeling of doubt
  • If you find yourself having moments of clarity and moments of doubt
  • You hate the question, "What do you do?"
  • When you say what you do, it is a long winded explanation
  • When you want something, you talk and talk and talk and talk... you don't simply state what you want.
  • You are not direct/ you expect people to 'get it' when you talk or ask questions.
  • You get emotional when challenged or questioned

If you want to build up your confidence, take these steps:

1. Recognize that you have diminished confidence.

2. Than you have to engage in the question- what would be possible if I were more confident, and answer that for yourself.

3. What happened?

a. Often a lack of confidence is rooted in evidence you have gathered from past failures.

b. Locate the failure(s)- what happened and then what conclusions and decisions you have made.

c. Notice that your decisions are running your life- not your past failures.

d. When you notice that those decisions are at the root cause of your diminished confidence, let go of those decisions.

e. Make a new decision about yourself and go through your day practicing acting out of that new decision.

4. BONUS: What would you do if you were confident that you are not doing? Now, go do that.

By simply doing an exercise you can boost your own confidence. When you are confident, you can go after what you want and stand for getting it (whatever it is!). I would love to hear from you after you practice elevating your confidence.

Effectiveness of Pareto's Principle in Human Life

Vilfredo Pareto was an Italian engineer, sociologist, was the father of the Pareto principle, now also known as the 80/20 rule. Pareto observed that 80% of income in Italy went to 20% of the population. Pareto later carried out surveys in some other countries and found to his surprise that a similar distribution applied. In the late 1940s, quality guru, Dr. Joseph M. Juran, attributed the 80/20 Rule to Pareto, calling it Pareto's Principle. Pareto's Principle or Pareto's Law is a useful tool to help you prioritize and manage the work in your life. For example

  • 80% of our revenues are generated by 20% of our customers.
  • 80% of our complaints come from 20% of our customers.
  • 80% of our quality issues occur with 20% of our products. Or we can say it otherwise
  • 20% of our contributors provide 80% of our funding.
  • 20% of our employees are responsible for 80% of sick days.
  • 20% of my ideas generate 80% of my traffic on my blog.
The value of this Principle is that it reminds you to focus on the 20% of the things that matter. That 20% produces 80% of your results. Although it's a rule of thumb, this principle is used to plan the time and efforts of human beings.
There are so many examples in our lives where we are using this rule without knowing. Analyzing the work task, recording the food habits, daily activity log, reading, socializing, Emails, television shows, budgeting are some of the important activities where this rule is implemented on daily basis.

Talking about applying it to daily life, let us say if you start by making your morning time the most productive time, then you will have the rest of your day the best of your day. suppose if you do only 20-30 minute workout in the morning, you will feel energized whole day. The same formula is applied to your study as well, if you study with sharp concentration for only few hour, you will remember it for next few days. The meaning is very simple daily small effort (20%) are leading you towards (80%) success. But make sure whatever you do, you deliver continuous effort to make that 80% workout.

Without a doubt, I would say that 80% of our happiness is extracted from 20% of what we enjoy doing most. This would include being around family and friends, spending time in the outdoors, flying small airplanes, and doing household chores.

To take action you must start to focus on your outputs instead of inputs. This means consume less, don't focus on materialistic goods, and spend fewer evenings on the couch. Instead, start producing and creating for the world. Go out and volunteer for a non-profit in your community. Mentor a young person or donate time to make someone else's life better. Start focusing on others and helping them reach their goals. Teaching is one of the most rewarding things a person can do in life. You'll find teaching to be an amazing way to build trust with others, which will help in business and life. If you'd like to start a business, find a pain in the market and provide a solution to it. Finding answers to problems and helping others will take you to the next level.

One of the greatest things about the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 rule, is that it actually tries to make things easier for you! You could even say it's the lazy man's guide to achieving what you want. Because it's not about extreme changes and strict routines - it's about recognizing what 20% of things you do already on a daily basis, accounts for 80% of the results you want. Unfortunately, people would much rather be as they are (inputs) and not bother to make the effort (outputs) of applying such a basic principle into their daily lives in whatever area they want to improve upon. Make the effort, be an output. Find what you are good at and maximize it. Recognize the actions that produce the most results for you and your business and put your energy where the big rewards are.

Know Your Worth And Value

Self-respect may be the most valuable personal asset you have. Or should have.

For too many years I let my fear of punishment, or my concept of being a good sport or a professional, keep me from realizing my full potential. Too often I didn't follow the path I knew to be right because of some misunderstanding of my role in the situation.

My parents did the best they could in raising me and teaching me to be a wonderful human. I knew right from wrong. I knew how to be generous. I understood the importance of commitment and honor. I didn't know my self-worth.

When you know your self-worth you set boundaries with others, you do your best because you are deserving of quality, and you set boundaries for yourself so you live your fullest potential.

Do you know what I'm talking about?

Do you cancel your date when your boss asks you to stay late to work on a project that could probably be done tomorrow? Do you avoid applying for a new position because your present job department relies on you so much that you can't leave them in the lurch? Do you eat another helping of lasagna, or have another drink, when the hostess urges you to, even when you are too full to enjoy it, because you don't want to seem rude?

Those actions reflect your low level of self-esteem, your concept of self-worth.

You aren't a hero when you put others before yourself. You aren't doing anyone a favor when you put yourself last.

Years ago I had a neighbor who lived under the delusion she alone had to care for her ailing husband and Down Syndrome sister, regardless. One winter she caught a cold which wouldn't go away, but she didn't stop to tend to it. It turned to pneumonia, and she still pressed on - she had to, her family depended on her. A lot of good it did her husband and sister when she died out of a false sense of responsibility.

If that neighbor had truly known her self-worth she would have handled the situation differently so that she could heal and be around for her family for years to come. She could have gotten someone else to step in and help with her husband and sister. Her lack of knowing her self-worth contributed to her demise, and ultimately her husband's and sister's.

OK, maybe that's an extreme example. But, maybe it's not pointed enough. Are you killing yourself for others?

The more self-respect you have the more you can shine, the more you can do with your life, and the more you can give to the world. You give to the world one way or another, so take control and give it your best!

Knowing your worth impacts your confidence and energy, and that snowballs to impact your influence, productivity, and focus. With strong self-esteem you live a life of purpose and direction, you are a positive role model and make a positive contribution to the world, and you enjoy all that your life has to offer.

Possessing the valuable asset of self-respect, you make the world a better place, starting with yourself.

Your Presence Is an Everyday Projection of Who You Are

Man in Black Suit Jacket Wearing White Headphones

To live life fully ought to be mandatory. If it were, it would instantly be the cause of forming an action group to protest about the invasion of one's individual liberty and freedom of choice. It would, also, need to take into consideration the many examples of individuals who are constrained, through no personal fault, because of incapacity, physical or otherwise, from fully engaging and participating in life's opportunities and challenges.

Limited though one's opportunity may be, for whatever reasons, the morning brings an additional 24 hours that need to be met and confronted and if one has the physical and mental capacity to engage, it seems a terrible waste of the value of that time not to exploit it and maximize what ever opportunity it presents or allows us to create.

Only a limited number of Einsteins grace the Earth but each individual brings a unique package that composes their own persona and allows them create an insight, perspective and comprehension of what each day presents. It is in that space that the individual has the capacity to triumph; to see, appreciate and interpret those day-to-day situations and circumstances and stamp their meaning on them; it is within those internal contemplative configurations that, while perhaps only lasting seconds, the individual has ownership of how they perceive and how they will respond or react to the world around them.

All of the incidents and instances of life are made up of those milliseconds and either fade into oblivion or grow into something of benefit and value depending on how they are first conceived, perceived, interpreteded.and actioned.

In the day-to-day manifestations of those instances, we each have opportunity to assess how best we may respond with the gifts we have at our disposal to create something of use to others from what is presented. We ought not to wait for the, "Big Bang", type of occasion or opportunity. There are frequently chances to offer just a word of kindness,;offer a helping hand to someone struggling with a heavy load; offer a meal or drink to someone seeking help; offer to shake the hand of a stranger and welcome them into your community; offer a compliment to a stranger serving in a store or driving your bus; write a note of thanks or encouragement to someone in need.

There are many opportunities that we pass each day when a little effort and awareness on our part could just make that difference.

Be Who You Were Destined to Be

Woman Closing Her Eyes While Holding Red Flower

Who are you? Who will you be? What will you do with your life?

All questions you are consistently asked throughout your life, and yet do you really know the answers to them? Will you ever truly know how to answer them in such a way that is true to your self and understood by others? I don't believe so. I think that each of us tries to figure out who we are through many channels of self expression. None of which somewhat define a little piece of who we are, but have no real value or meaning in our lives.

Some say by the time you graduate high school you will know who you are. Others say after you graduate college or university, then you'll know for sure. I think it is difficult to pinpoint a timeline for knowing who you are and who you will become, because as humans we are constantly growing and changing and learning new things. How can one judge their potential when they have yet to explore the world and know where they are?

Defining yourself:
- Write a 30 second pitch, answering two questions:
1. Who are you?
2. Why should I care?
- Are you a person or are you a job title. Never say you are Head of Company Y or the significant other of So&So.
- Describe who you think you are in 5 words. Does it match who you show you are?

Being yourself:
- Don't be who people tell you to be.
- Do what you like doing and find those who enjoy the same things.
- Be kind to strangers because they may show you a hidden piece of yourself.
- Have a value system and stick to it. Don't compromise yourself.

Stand up for what you believe in:
- What do you believe in? Write it out.
- Join a protest for your favorite cause.
- Join an organization or campus club that you can fully support.
- Are you for or against organized religions? Join those who differ from your viewpoint.

Learn from those around you:
- In your path to self discovery, open your eyes to the people you do not associate with.
- Everyone you meet knows something you don't. So listen when they speak.
- Have Humility.
- Attitudes are everything! If someone has an attitude, good or bad, seek to understand it.

Be present:
- Ground yourself in the present moment.
- Be Mindful.
- Focus on what is right in front of you.
- Accept things you cannot change and move on from it.

What you do is not who you are, but merely a small part of the greatness that defines you. If you only address yourself as your job title or by your partner life is going to be dull and you will not have a sense of self or self worth. Believe in yourself. Set goals and achieve them. Don't just have a goal and not act on it. Action is key to anything you do. Be active in finding yourself and showing who you are to the world. If not for the world or anyone else, find yourself for you. Knowing who you are and what you stand for and what you believe in sets you a million miles apart from those who don't. It might be lonely being who you are and standing up for what you believe in, but if you don't no one else will. It is up to you to be the lead explorer in your life and take it for all it is worth. Find your passions. Please I urge you to find things you enjoy doing and never stop doing them. You are worth it. Society will beat you down to a pulp if you let it. And you can't let it. You have to fight the societal norms and break away from things you cannot change focusing on the things you can. And change them. Change yourself if you do not like who you are becoming. That is the part of exploring yourself no one talks about. You can change if you truly wish to.

Keeping Positive

Thinking positive is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on the happy and good side of life, and in turn attracts positive results. A positive person anticipates happiness, health and success, and believes that it can be achieved!

"If you believe you can, you are half way there."

It is important to adopt the attitude of positive thinking in everything that you do. As they say "practice makes perfect", so the more you do it, the easier it becomes, and eventually it will be a way of life. After all life is short and you only get one chance at it, so why not make it a happy and worthwhile experience?

"Happiness is not ready-made... its comes from your own actions" - Dalai Lama

Keeping it positive creates real value in your life, which can have an impact on your work, health and life in general.

Negative emotions narrow your mind and focus your thoughts on the negative. Your mind becomes closed to possibility thinking.

Positive emotions broaden your sense of possibilities and opens your mind. If you start to adopt the attitude that everything in life is possible, you will discover that there will be more positive things happening in your life.

Life becomes a lot easier if you approach it with a happy and positive outlook. I'm not saying that everyday is going to be filled with sunshine because that would be unrealistic.

What I am saying is that when you are faced with obstacles and/or hardship, try to look at the problem with an open mind. Look for the positive way of solving it rather than get caught up in negative thoughts.

Positive emotions allow you to discover and build new skills and resources that can provide value and have a great impact in other areas of your life eg: your health, job, relationships.

Negative emotions have the opposite effect, because they take control and so your brain only focuses on the negative thought/ feeling. This results in you placing your attention on what could go wrong, thereby limiting the other possible options around you.

Negative thinking restricts you completely and can have a lasting damaging effect on your life in general. "Consider negativity as a poison... to be avoided!"

You need to learn to think positively and to increase positive emotions. Start by doing things that bring you happiness, contentment and love, eg: make time for a hobby, play the piano, gardening or spending time with that special person.

To change your mindset from negative to positive is not something that happens overnight... like most habits, you need to work on it. Every day you have to make a conscious effort to be positive until it becomes a part of your every day living. You need to condition your mind towards positive thinking.

Here are some tips on how to increase positive thinking in your life:

1. Make a conscious decision to be positive.

2. Speak in a positive way, using positive words.

3. When you find yourself thinking negative thoughts, endeavour to replace them with positive ones. You will probably have to persevere with this one to eventually teach your mind to think positively and to ignore the negative thoughts.

4. Always expect good and favourable results - a positive outlook is more likely to yield a positive outcome.

5. Use affirmations, positive statements repeated to describe a desired situation or goal, until they are impressed on the subconscious.

Believe you can and you are half way there.

Remember that you are the only person who thinks in your mind. You can choose to look at the good in things or the bad, you are the power and authority in your world. The decision to be happy lies within you.

Integrity: Doing the Right Thing Matters! (By Elle Michelle Anderson )

A while back, I was asked to lead a discussion on the topic of integrity at a training institute where I served as a presenter. I was honored to speak on the subject given that integrity is a value that plays an integral part in every aspect of my life. While preparing for my presentation, I was thinking of different ways I could share my views on how I integrate the value of integrity into my life without coming off sounding sanctimonious, or worse. By chance, I ran across a quote that embodies my point of view about what integrity means to me. The quote by C.S. Lewis says, "Integrity is doing the right thing. Even when no one is watching". An analogous quote by Oprah Winfrey states, "Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not." In other words, the way I see it - integrity is where our beliefs, words and actions intersect. It is not something that can be faked or disingenuously exhibited in pursuit of accolades or praise from others.

The most succinct way I can describe integrity is that it is equivalent to breathing life into our morals and values. What I know for sure is the act of exemplifying integrity in our lives on a daily basis is a choice. I often say, the choices people make, good or bad, can impact the entire trajectory of their life. Having integrity does not mean a person is perfect by any means. It just shows that some people are more conscientious in making morally sound decisions than others. How wonderful it would be if more people would exercise more selfless choices.

Doing the Right Thing

Over the majority of my career, I have worked in two areas that have the greatest influence on the success or failure of a business, i.e., financial and human resources. Consequently, during my tenure, I have arbitrated numerous cases in which integrity had come into question. While presiding over each case, I always kept the words of wisdom at the forefront of my mind which an esteemed colleague said to me years ago while teaching a workshop on the principles of ethics and integrity. He said, "When it comes to integrity in the workplace, there is no such thing as a bad person. There are only good people who are put in bad situations".

Depending on your belief system, I guess there could be some truth in that statement. However, I would be hard pressed to agree with this sentiment in its entirety given my belief system about integrity which is, 'doing the right thing even when no one is watching'. In this statement, there is no judgment of good or bad about the individual. I simply believe a person of integrity who is put in a bad situation will in all likelihood choose to do the right thing. Of course, having integrity does not mean there is no room for error or that a person of integrity is always picture-perfect in every word, thought or deed. However, whether it is at work or play, a person of integrity will most certainly hold true to this value regardless of the situation.

In my profession, my goal is to always be very intentional in leading others by example. When training my staff, I teach them to take pride in their work and to execute their duties as if their every move and decision is subject to audit. This strategy is not intended to intimidate. As a matter of fact, I truly believe that an effective leader leads through motivation, not through intimidation. So, as a leader, I utilize my experience and values to motivate others to do the right thing at all times even if no one is watching. This goes a long way in your career as well as your personal life.

Integrity in Relationships

I believe integrity is just as important in professional relationships. Everyone has most likely, at one point or other, been involved in a situation or have had a professional relationship in which someone they know exhibited a lack of integrity. In many of these situations people speak as if they value integrity, but in reality their actions prove otherwise. One thing that never lies is a person's actions. How a person conducts themselves will always show who they truly are more than the words they speak. There are many people who will smile in your face while they conspire to stab you in the back - metaphorically speaking, of course! As Maya Angelou once said, 'When someone shows you who they are, believe them; the first time". I have learned over the years to really understand this adage.

So, when it comes to professional relationships, and personal relationships too for that matter; I watch people's actions and see if their words align. Those that don't, are the ones who are basically showing you who they are by their actions. These individuals will more than likely make bad choices, usually at someone else's expense. Their tactics may work in their favor in the short-run, but it definitely will not benefit them in the long-run. Remember, nothing good or bad lasts forever! Deception and lack of integrity will always catch up with a person. That's why I do not spend time hating on people who show a lack of integrity in professional or personal relationships. I do not have to obsess over trying to get back at anyone in these instances. For them, simply living a life without integrity has got to be the worse punishment of all.

In Summary

To sum things up, given my view that integrity is a value where our beliefs, words and actions intersect, I do not believe that it is something one can exhibit in one part of their life and not the other. It is not something that can be turned on or off at a whim. Integrity is a value so powerful that it can significantly impact personal and professional relationships. I believe integrity is important not just in our professional careers, but in all aspects of our lives. It is important to note, the mere act of exhibiting integrity on a consistent basis does not make any one person better than anyone else. Everyone has a chance to redeem themselves even after demonstrating a lapse in integrity. Which reminds me of another quote which says: "There is no better test of a man's integrity than his behavior when he is wrong". All in all, however, I believe a person of true integrity will more than likely choose to do the right thing regardless of the situation. The reward is not in seeking acknowledgement from others. The true reward is simply knowing they have done the right thing. Exhibiting integrity is a choice that everyone has the opportunity to exercise. Although not everyone holds integrity as a value, it is my hope that more people will make the choice to do the right thing regardless of the situation or whether someone is watching.

I Have 10 Life Secrets: Let Me Share 1

Most people don't get what they want or deserve because of silly mistakes. I have met a number of talented college graduates who struggle economically because of the bridges they've burned along the way, experienced professionals who get stuck mid-career because of pride, and near retirement employees who are anxious to retire so that their fear of unemployment stops consuming them. Clearly, nobody told these folks that jobs are now partnerships and that burning bridges, pride and fear are only going to slowly transform their true talent into perishable mediocrity. You don't want to fall under these categories. What you do need is to control your life by maneuvering the game of life in ways that makes you totally unpredictable. By the way, how are you positioning yourself these days? Are you engaging in careful planning?

Undeniably, everybody loves doing the kind of work that they have a talent for. Based on this logic, the million dollar question then becomes, "What do I need to do in order to work on my talent?" Ladies and gentleman, I am going to reveal to you one of the ten life secrets I've learned right now. The secret actually comes from Napoleon Hill, one of my "deceased mentors" and author of the book "Think and Grow Rich." Just realize that his secret has seven steps. Are you ready for this?

First: Decide exactly what kind of job you want. If this job doesn't already exist, perhaps you can create it.

Second: Choose the company or individual from whom you wish to work for.

Third: Study your prospective employer, as to policies, personnel, and chances for advancement.

Fourth: By analysis of yourself, your talents and capabilities, figure what you can offer, and plan ways and means of giving advantages, services, developments, and ideas that you believe you can successfully deliver.

Fifth: Forget about a "job." Forget whether or not there is an opening. Forget the usual routine of "have you got a job for me?" Concentrate on what you can give.

Sixth: Once you have your plan in mind, arrange with an experienced writer to put it on paper in neat form and in full detail.

Seventh: Present it to the proper person with authority and he will do the rest. Every company is looking for men who can give something of value, whether it be ideas, services, or "connections." Every company has room for the man who has a definite plan of action which is to the advantage of that company.

Careful planning is at the core of this secret. Failing to influence others is a capital mistake. Never, under any circumstances, criticize others because the moment you do you lose them. Who knows if you are going to need them in the future or not? Don't burn bridges! Control your pride. Life is about God, not you or me. Why are you so afraid? Life is full of surprises. You might as well join the team and make yourself indispensable to whoever you work for. Your anxieties will decrease... trust me.

It is all about careful planning, dude. By the way, what are you doing about that? Don't let others choose what you should do. You should take ownership of your destiny perhaps with the consultation of a close ally. The former can help you tremendously, that is for sure.

21 Life Mantras (By Tim Connor)

We all have our favorite sayings, verses, quotes or just simple and honest ideas that in many ways each day govern or direct our lives either directly or indirectly. Over the years I have developed what I call my "Life Mantras List" that are the primary and critical thoughts or concepts that I use to live, work and play each day and as this year (one I am grateful for - for many reasons) comes to an end I thought I would share just 21 of them that are the foundation as to how I try and live my life each day.

There is no order to the following as I have not included all of the items on my list but just some of the major ones that I thought might trigger some action, reflection or introspection on your part. Please accept that I am in no way suggesting that if you don't have a list, your items are not the same as mine or any other criteria - that mine is better than or more appropriate than yours. Just sharing. By the way, just to be clear some of these are not my original ones but things people over the years have taught me.

Since this will be my last article submission for this year - I offer you my very best wishes to you and your friends, family, customers or co-workers for a safe holiday season and a healthy and prosperous 2018.

Here's my list;

I am on God's schedule. This one doesn't need any further explanation.

I'm just getting warmed up. I don't ever plan to retire - why would I want to stop doing what I love - speaking around the world and writing in my spare time. I'm not famous, a celebrity or wealthy but I am having a blast and hopefully getting better every day.

If it happens I'll get excited if it doesn't I won't be disappointed. We can't control much in life. So, the best thing we can do in my opinion is do our best to do what we can and then let go of the outcomes.

It's not over till it's over. Too many people die emotionally before they do physically.

If you are one of these people why? Live while you still can. Yes, age and health issues can change lifestyle, but they don't have to eliminate it.

God is in control. Again - this one speaks for itself.

No excuses will ever be enough when you give up on your mission. Doing your best is no guarantee that you will win or achieve your goals or dreams. But not doing your best sure won't work in your favor.

This life is not about me but you. I was put here to serve not be the center of attention or the center of your world.

Life is short and fragile - you are here for a littler while and then gone forever. Having survived a few recent health challenges, I can tell you - live to the fullest while you can.

I will learn as much as I can every day and share everything I learn. Read, learn, grow and share every day, otherwise what's the point?

I was not put on the earth for your approval. Like me - don't like me - approve of me - don't approve of me - I have to be me. When I try to be who or what you want - I lose me - not going to happen folks, no matter how hard you try.

I refuse to grow up. I am forty years + younger than my age and with each passing year I intend to get younger and not older.

I will say thank you all day - every day. Again, this says it all. No matter what or who comes into my life and whatever their or its agenda I will just say thank you.

Every day is a gift. Not talking here about presents, money, health or anything. Just that far too many people are not given the gift of life today. We were - so cherish it and stop whining, complaining etc.

Failure is necessary to succeed. I have failed at more things and relationships than I have succeeded at during my life but each of them has taught me more about life and its value and purpose than any of the successes. So, bring them on.

This too shall prepare me. One of my favorite people gave me this line. It's not this too shall pass (common phrase) but - well, read it again.

You are never too old or too young to dream. So, stop acting your age and go for it.

Quitting is stupid. Do I need to explain this one? If I do well, no disrespect intended but you need to go back to kindergarten.

Don't wait for God to start you - keep going till He stops you. I love this one.

You never fail till you stop trying. Bought this sign years ago when I was taking my kids horseback riding. It was in the gift shop. It's been on my wall for many, many years since that day.

It's all trivia. You are born. One day you will die. Everything in between is trivia.

My age is just a number. "My age is none of my business." Mark Twain.

Da, That's it folks...

How to Stay Sober (By Sherry Daniel)

I've spent the last decade battling alcohol. Sometimes, I even felt like I won. But, it always came back. Every time I got weak, there was my 'friendly bottle' to ease my suffering. Addiction always starts with pain. Always.

Every time I relapsed, alcohol opened the gates of hell and pulled me in. It is only by the grace of God that I am even here to share my story. One serious episode was a five-day bender that almost poisoned me. It was close. For more than a week, my body suffered the effects of so much alcohol.

Hiding this disease and all the lies that comes with that broke down the fabric of who I was. Today, I can tell the truth and feel some pride in knowing my word has value. Bless those who never gave up on me and I pray for wisdom and compassion for those who chose to judge.

One time, I revived my battle with the bottle thinking I would take a brief respite from the physical pain of some oral surgery combined with the emotional shock of another sudden death in my family. I couldn't even attend the funeral as I was still so toxic from the relapse.

For those who don't believe in a dark side, trust me when I testify that it's so real that I've tasted it. An innocent looking bottle of wine opened the door to Pandora's box that almost marked the end of me. It was close and I was weak in the fight. I've never prayed harder.

Good and evil exist. Christ can lead the way to freedom with His light but you have to ask Him in. With His power and protection, one can be pulled from the presence of evil that actually waits for the door to open. The darkness beckons with temporary peace, freedom and ease of pain until you relax into it and then the trap springs shut and all three disappear.

Alcohol leads one into a dark hole where the spirit of darkness lives-void of all five senses except the utter chill of misery. In that darkness, a choice starts to form like a flicker of thought until the answer burns brightly. That is the point one meets God and the story turns.

Full addiction is a complete takeover. Once the chemical hooks are triggered, there is no negotiating away with thought. It takes an intervention-sometimes chemical to weaken those bonds.

The battle with alcoholism doesn't end. It goes into remission. Addiction is a spiritual malady that turns mental and finally manifests physically. It is time to defeat this 'fatal, progressive disease.'

Become The Decider

Let's say you make plans with a friend to go out to dinner. When your friend asks where you want to go to eat, do you say:

A. I don't know

B. Whatever you want is fine

C. *shrug*

D. All of the above

In fact, how many times does that happen? Someone asks what you want and you say "whatever... " and default to their preference.

Avoiding decisions is a way of hiding. You avoid asserting what's important to you, what you value, what you want. You keep going along, same old same old. And you end up letting others - people and circumstances - run your life.

It's time to start making decisions.

Making a decision is powerful. The origin of the word decide means to "cut off". Deciding means taking a stand, saying yes to something and, by doing so, saying no to something else.

If you've been shrinking from decisions for a while, deciding can feel uncomfortable. Deciding means:

  • declaring a preference... what if someone doesn't approve of my choice?
  • accountability... what if I make a mistake?
  • cutting off options... what if I regret my choice?
  • taking responsibility for steering the direction of your life... what if I get it wrong??

Those nagging, negative, critical thoughts are a sign that fear is ramping up. Fear prefers the status quo, creating as much resistance as possible to keep you from doing anything different. It's true, someone might not approve or a decision might not turn out the way you expect, but that doesn't mean you collapse back into inaction.
Decision-making takes practice.

It's a skill you develop and a lesson in trust. Every time you make a decision, you learn about yourself. You discover what you want, how to speak for yourself, how to become the leader in your life. As a bonus, you build trust in your ability to decide. The more you decide, the more confident you become at decision-making.

If you're ready to break the habit of indecision, here are some ways to jumpstart your decision-making:

Check in with your body

You can tap into your body's guidance to help you discern which course of action to take by paying attention to what Martha Beck calls (in her book, Steering by Starlight) your shackles on and shackles off reactions.

Imagine choosing the options you're considering. When you think of each outcome, what do you feel in your body? If you notice that your body becomes tense, tight, constricted or drained - that's a sign the outcome is not right for you. That's your shackles on response.

On the other hand, if you notice that your body feels lighter, open, energized or more expansive - that's your body giving you a yes. That's your shackles off response. Check for which option feels like shackles off and go in that direction.

WWCD

If you are dealing with a particularly stressful, anxiety-producing decision, ask yourself "What would calm do?". This question helps to bypass the fear-based chatterbox in your head and access a quieter, deeper, wiser part of yourself.

Fear doesn't get to choose

How much is fear driving your decision? Is your choice steering you toward what's best for you or trying to avoid something bad that might happen? Instead of focusing on fear, ask yourself "What would delight me? What would I love?" Lean towards love rather than away from fear.

Making decisions is like taking the steering wheel of your life. You're no longer coasting on autopilot... you are consciously and intentionally navigating your own way.

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing. - Theodore Roosevelt

Choose Your Life

Life offers everyone a different and unique path. What we experience can be the same but still very different. Every life has a purpose. Distinguishing the purpose of the person defines why you were given life. No one or nothing is here by random chance or consequence. Even a blade of grass is significant. Life is a gift of priceless value nothing received will be of greater or equal value. To live a life of fulfillment is the greatest blessing of any human being. When you find out what makes you come alive you start to recognize your gifts. The premise is to recognize your gift and share it with the world. When given a gift expect to use it for good or you will be held accountable. We were created to honor the gift giver of life. Mathew 25:29 states, " For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them." To those that much is given much is expected. Consequences and circumstances will be what they are its how we deal with them that will determine which roads we journey down.

When issues or problems arise we tend to feel entitled because we believe it should have never happened to us. Holding on to your past just makes it more difficult. Some will tell you it's too hard to let go of the past but it's actually more difficult holding onto to it. If you have never had any issues in life then this article isn't for you. But if you have experienced heartache, difficulties, burdens and consequences beyond your control this is for you. Your time is coming. You just need to live through it in order to go through it. Once you live through it and go through it close the door on it. Once you feel the fire you just need to walk through the fire, step through the door and you are on your way. Fire not only burns but it cleanses too. Those doors we closed are the lessons needed to fuel us forward. There will always be a price to pay. The race isn't for the swift or the strong but to the one who endures. Forget your yesterdays and grow from your mistakes. Move forward and don't look back.

We are bigger than we sometimes see ourselves. We just need to look harder and with more focus. A price was paid and we were given grace. It carries us forward. Everyday of our lives is grace given. Ephesians 5:8 "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord." We were given the opportunity to be more significant than the blade of grass mentioned earlier. To awaken to a new beginning everyday of our lives is more than a blessing. It should not be wasted living by what someone else thinks or does. Let your voice count for the great things that life has to offer. Life is what you make of it. So make the best of it. Without it there is nothing else.

A Life Of Sweet Surrender

Are you a peacemaker, a diplomat, an appeaser or a pacifier; maybe you're known as a 'go along to get along' kind of person who is silent except when it's time to negotiate a peace treaty? If so, you are living the life of sweet surrender. You are surrendering the opportunity to make a statement, take a stand or support something you believe in. On the down side, when you stand for nothing you are expected to be confident about nothing. You have been silenced with your consent.

Why does anyone accept this position? Could it be that they are afraid their opinion is not intelligent or has significant value, that they may offend someone who matters or even that they are insignificant? Somehow the people who have assumed this position in life manage to surround themselves with those who expect them to remain silent or negotiate them out of the places where they have placed their foot squarely in their own mouth, rendering this position even more thankless.

In the words of George Braque, 'Once an object has been incorporated in a picture it accepts a new destiny." Every scene becomes a picture, a memory set down in time. All the people in the scene become objects in the picture. The diplomat who never voices an opinion or holds a position except as peacemaker becomes a part of the opinions expressed, even though they may be in total opposition; a rarely sought after destiny.

This kind of posture occurs over time... As in the time when you were uncertain of which stand was correct, growing up in a loud dysfunctional environment that required the presence of a peacemaker, imagining that you are in a group who held a far more important position than you and a host of other issues that silenced you. People become accepting of this role when it becomes valuable to others in their circle. Even if it is uncomfortable it lends value to their presence.

Much like the old frog in the pot syndrome that is typically associated with abusive relationships, those who accept your silence become your abuser. A frog that is placed in cool water will sit still and be boiled alive so long as the temperature is slowly increased. That same frog placed in boiling water will immediately recognize the danger and jump out to save itself. It is a long cool boil that silences a human into submission and acceptance of never daring to speak up or out. It is also dangerous; this person is fated to build up a resentment at those who never seem to notice their silence or lack of participation.

It is worthwhile to take a chance and take a stand by testing the water if you are the one afflicted. You may discover you don't even like the company of those who never noticed or asked about your thoughts or feelings. That's not a bad thing; you are standing for something important. Yourself..

Why You Should Want Others to Respect You

Love is the strongest and most unknown vibrational energy that you will ever need. But alongside this, you also need another important ingredient for your stand and status in the society. What is it? Read on to find out.

All of us have an urge inside us to feel important. And that is when you crave for a little respect from the people around you including your spouse or fiancé.

What would having respect really mean? It means you have a position and status in the society. It also means you are vital and make a difference in the world. Without your presence, your position would be empty and no other human being can ever fill it up.

Respect is all about making others feel important, giving credit to others when they deserve, giving raises and promotions when they have earned them and above all, treating them with dignity and value.

Of course there will be a minority who will not be skilled, speak bad language and bear no courtesies and manners. These people are to be left behind while you go ahead in life. And if you are the boss, simply fire them.

Respect for others means you treat them as your equal and are ready to discuss issues or problems on the same plane. You find that you have much in common and share equivalent values and ethics.

Without people respecting you would mean that you are an outcast, not belonging to the society, rather being kicked by the society. This really happens when you are drunk every night and return home, when you poke your nose too much in others' affairs without letting them have any privacy and when you boss around everywhere, with people loathing it, and not listening to their woes.

With a medley of love and respect, you are so much comfortable in your shoes. You have become successfully the person you have always wanted to be. You enjoy family company and friends and colleagues' company. You respect others just as much as others respect you. Together with all the people you know, you are a mighty force, standing up for each other and nothing could be better and more graceful. You will smile- so will the world smile back at you.

For some mishap or unfortunate chain of events, if you lose your respect, you are bound to go down the bottomless pit. But that is not the end of everything. You can have help and ask for help from genuine people and also pray to Almighty God for amending your mistakes and eventually earn back all the respect you will ever need.

In fact, having respect in the society naturally means you are important, wealthy and a make-a-difference person. And you can have all of that only if you yearn for it bad enough. Gotcha?

Know Your Worth And Value

person holding flowers

Create Your Best Self

Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar. One day, the morning after a party or in the evening after a few glasses of Champagne with your friends, you get this super motivated feeling. It hits you and you know that this time you're going to stick to your guns. This time, you are ready to hit the gym, eat healthy, stop drinking and put in the work to be that person... your ideal vision of you that you see when you close your eyes.

And you do, for a week or even a month. But slowly you lose your motivation and you're not as gung-ho about the ideal you. And then one evening you are pouring yourself a glass of wine and think, "why did I want to hit the gym and get healthy again"? There's that familiar feeling of guilt that you feel. You were so excited, so ready. What happened?

Life happened. Habits happened. You have a million and one things running through your head and meandering through your life: your friend is sick, your significant other pissed you off, your mom is in town.

Life will always happen. But that doesn't mean that your ideal vision of you can't ever exist. In fact, all the more reason that person should exist. You might be thinking Julia, I'm "X" years old, I've tried this over and over and it's not going to work. And I'm going to tell you that if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten.

You deserve to be your ideal vision of you, your Best Self. Stay motivated. Here's how.

What's Your WHY?

What's your Why? Think about your Why as your Personal Mission Statement. When you close your eyes and see your ideal self, your happiest self, what is that person doing? Who is that person? What about that person is so ideal to you? These are super personal questions. Your answers won't be the same as any other persons in the world. They won't be the same as your best friends, or your brothers, or your twins. Ask yourself what drives you to get out of bed in the morning. What motivates you to go out in to the world and be?

It's not often that we're asked to sit down and write out who our best self is. It feels a bit selfish. It's hard to put it in to words. It's as if we're embarrassed to admit that we want to BE something, something more than what we are today. I'm not saying that who you are today is not enough. But every person I've ever known has wanted to grow and be more and do more and learn more. I'm willing to bet you want that too.

Discover What Makes Your Ideal-Self Ideal

Try this exercise. Get a piece of paper and a pen. Remember when you were in 8th grade and your Literature teacher told you to just start to write? I remember writing my name abut 20 times before words actually did come pouring out of me. Start there. Write your name over and over. Drive home that this is about you. When you write your name, what do you want it to be associated with?

Write your name and then write 10-15 words that have personal value to you. If you have to write your name in between, that's fine. But find words that move you. Strength, balance, spirituality, wealth... whatever it is. Write it.

From that list, highlight 3-4 words that seem to jump out at you. Pick the 3 that resonate with you the loudest. Maybe they all revolve around one aspect of life. Maybe health is important to your ideal self, or relationships, or what kind of energy is around you. Maybe it's a mish-mash of a few different things.

Got it?

Now, take those highlighted words and create a statement about your best self, your ideal self. Navigate your thoughts away from HOW you will get there, but rather towards where THERE is.

It might help to think about what your ideal self would be without those 3 words. As soon as you pull them away, you'll recognize why they are so important.

Write It Down.

You've formulated your Why statement. Now, Write. It. Down. Not on Google Calendar, not in a notebook, not in Word. Write your statement, your WHY, on a piece of paper.

Put that piece of paper somewhere that you are guaranteed to see it twice a day (okay, you might need to write it down twice). Stick one to the tea kettle and stick one on the book you are reading that you keep on your night stand.

Focus on That Statement Twice a Day, Every Day.

Focus is the absolute key word here. Every day, read your Why statement once in the morning when you make tea, and once in the evening when you read your book. But don't just read it and pass over it. FOCUS on it. Take ten seconds to reaffirm what it means to you. Ten seconds. That's about as long as it takes to fill the tea kettle. It takes very, very little time to do. But the consequences are enormous.

When you read your Why statement in the morning, you are starting your day by filling your head with a vision of your best-self. Your brain hasn't yet been bombarded by everything that it will be presented with throughout the day. It's fresh. By reading your affirmation first thing in the morning, you are setting the tone of your day. Think about Christmas morning. Think about how the morning, the joy of it, infuses warmth and happiness through out the rest of the day. The tone is set. You have the power to do that every day.

When you go to sleep at night, does your mind race with a thousand thoughts? What if you could realign your thoughts so that they raced around your Why statement? What if the most meaningful thing, your Why, was the thing you fell asleep to, the last thought before you start dreaming?

You are putting your Why at the very forefront of your mind. That's the place where the Why starts to take over.

Live As If You Are Your Best Self, And You Make That Reality.

You create your own reality.

That's a big thought, but let me give you an example. Jane, a busy woman with a life-long love of fast food, wants to be a healthy eater. The 3 words/phrases that she highlighted as most meaningful were long-life, feeling alive, and confidence. Jane knows that to be a person with confidence, who feels alive and who can look forward to a long-life, she must be healthy. So Jane cuts out fast-food, she starts to walk 30 minutes a day, and she eats fresh food through out the day for energy. Jane is now a healthy eater. Jane created her own reality.

The moment that you choose to live the life that your Best Self will lead, you are your Best Self.

This is a learning process. Ah, life. Your Why statement might not be perfect the first time around. Your Why statement will morph as you accomplish the things that you want to accomplish. As I mentioned before, every person I've ever known wants to grow, wants to be more. That doesn't change even if you've created your Best Self reality. There is always more. There is always drive.
