Don't Play The Victim Or You'll Be Victimised!

Life is a school - the more you go, the more you learn.
Rear View of a boy Sitting on Grassland

And one of the things I've found out is that life victimises those who play the victim. In fact, the way it works is, if you lie down, you will be climbed upon; if you sit down, you will be sat on and if you play dead, you will be buried - it's as simple as that.

If you want to win, you must get on your feet, wipe your tears, roll up your sleeves and get into the fight determined to win and don't quit until you do!

It's Just Not Fair - But That's The Reality

The pressures, challenges and difficulties of life will furnish you with more than enough reasons to throw up your hand and say I can't go on anymore.

You may feel like doing so as the pressures bashing against your weary self may strongly suggest it and even your logical analysis will lead you to the conclusion that the best thing to do is to throw up your hands and surrender. After all, you are only human and there is only so much you can bear (you may tell yourself).

But don't do it! Don't give in to that despondency and play the victim. You can't afford to go by what you feel in this case. It may not be fair but that is the reality.

You must press on even when you don't feel like doing so and you must lift your head above the waters even when you feel like surrendering to the storm. If you play the victim, you'll be victimised.

Not Many People Tell The Whole Story

Some of the greatest champions in history in whatever the field, (if they will tell you), came close to giving up. They are all too familiar with that sinking feeling to play the victim and quit but they refused. They pressed through that negative cloud and emerged as champions.

As champions, they are celebrated but not many of them bother to say what they went through and how that almost gave up. And by the way, not many people care to find out what they went through to become the great successes that they became.

You Too Do Stand A Chance To Succeed

That's right. You may be bombarded by the thoughts of giving up right now, but if you press through and end up at the other side (of success and breakthrough), many will celebrate you without caring to know what you went through to get there. What you are being confronted with is not new. That is the stuff that champions and winners go through.

If you don't play the victim and quit, you stand the chance of succeeding and emerging the successful you that you dreamt of.

Not Everyone Is Born With A Silver Spoon

Not everyone that has succeeded was born with silver spoon in their mouth. Some of the greatest heroes ever known were those who had very little to go on and came close to the brink of failure several times but refused to throw in the towel. Against all odds, they emerged as champions and that is even the more reason they are celebrated. If they could, what makes you think you can't?

Most times, it is not how weak or strong you are; it is not how gifted or non-gifted you are; it is not how privileged or underprivileged you are. Most times, it comes down to one thing and that is the decision to press on and not to play the victim no matter what.

Get The Help You Need To win

Where do you find the courage to stand when you feel like sitting down? Where do you find the resourcefulness to press on when you feel like throwing up your hands in defeat? And where do you find reason to hope when all you can see is the dark cloud of hopelessness? I will tell you.

That help can only be found in God. He is a friend of the wounded, despondent and failing heart. He knows how to strengthen a man inside out at his weakest moments and most importantly, He has the power and the resources to turn any negative situation around if you will let Him to step in and help you.

The first step to opening the door for Him to help you, is to come into a personal relationship with Him. And that is what happens when you receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour. Believe me, that will open the door to a lot of good things that will surprise you.

12 After-Work Activities To Prevent Burnout

Job burnout is not only common nowadays, it could even happen to you even if there aren’t many demands on your current position.
This is because job burnout doesn’t just refer to physical stress – it also includes emotional and mental exhaustion, as well as feelings of dissatisfaction with regards to your work performance. So if you’re feeling frustrated most of the time because you can’t meet your daily quota, OR you have recurring migraines, insomnia, and stomach upset, then you might be suffering from job burnout.
But don’t quit your job just yet! Everyone will undergo this experience at some point in their lives (it’s normal!). However, what you want to avoid is going through it for long periods of time. Once you start feeling overwhelmed, learn to step back, breathe in, and give yourself a break. Your time after work is a crucial period for you to rejuvenate and connect with the things that are important to you.
Instead of simply scrolling through your Facebook feed after 5PM, check out these 12 after-office activities that would help you fight off burnout, as well as provide more meaning into your day.
#12 Meet Friends
Hang out with childhood buddies or your office colleagues. Enjoy coffee at a nearby café, shop around town, or dance the stress away. We as humans are naturally social creatures; so being with others is a great way to energize ourselves and fend off feelings of frustration or isolation.
#11 Read Good Books
Do you have a stack of new books that you haven’t read yet? Why not begin now! Reading is not only fun, it’s a great exercise for your brain. So go ahead and grab a title from your bookshelf, plop on a comfortable seat or bed, and get ready to be transported to a different world without ever leaving your apartment.
#10 Walk Around The City
Need a little fresh air? This is one activity that you could do either during your lunch hour or after work. I enjoy simply walking around the city, observing the lights come on at night, or watch the many vendors sell their wares. It helps clear my mind and I feel more refreshed by the time I go home.
#9 Exercises
Whether you love jogging, yoga, or sports, being active after work has plenty of benefits. One, you sweat away your worries; two, your body produces endorphins that lift your mood, making you instantly happy; and three, you keep yourself fit and healthy! Talk about hitting three birds with one stone.
#8 Develop a Hobby
Ever wanted to get into clay modeling? Obsessed with photography? Do you wish to improve on your piano playing skills? Hobbies are a great outlet for us to remain productive while taking pleasure in stuff we love. If you haven’t thought about developing a hobby yet, it’s never too late. Pick something you would enjoy taking up on your free time. Start small, and slowly progress until you acquire better skills. Who knows – maybe your hobby will eventually turn into a business venture one day!
#7 Cook Dinner
This is one of my favorite things to do after work. Although I feel tired, I usually whip up something simple for my family to enjoy and my stress somehow melts away. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Pasta dishes or cream desserts are easy and affordable enough to feed two to four people. Here’s another awesome idea: invite coworkers or friends over for a food date! With cooking and meal planning apps at your disposal, you don’t even need to buy a cookbook to get started.
#6 Spend Time with Family
When was the last time you invited your parents to come over? Did you visit your sister who lives just a couple of blocks away? Your son or daughter would love to play with you once you get home. Often, we’re just focused on how exhausted we are without even thinking about our family’s need to be with us. They miss us, too! So don’t forget to bring Grandma some fresh bread, or to call your Dad just to say “hi”. They’d certainly love to hear about your day.
#5 Write In Your Journal
Writing is not only therapeutic, it could also bring out your creative side. You don’t even need a notebook. I have a friend who writes on napkins and stores them in a wooden box (odd, but definitely unique). It could be a diary entry, a collection of poems, or you could even begin writing your own short story – whatever goes! You don’t have to be a great journalist or a pro to write. Remember: this is for YOU alone. If you choose to share your works with the world later on, it should be at your own discretion.
#4 Play With Your Pets
Taking care of another living creature is said to be one of the best ways to keep stress at bay. Ever wondered why dog and cat owners look happier? If you’re not fond of either animal, there are plenty more to choose from. Why not try a guinea pig? They’re cute, playful, and are great for folks with small dwellings. Fishes are another cool option. Listening to the soft gurgling of the water while watching colorful tropical fish swim by is sure to melt your worries away.
#3 Listen To Music
Did you know that there’s such a thing as “music therapy”? It’s where professionals use the soothing and healing properties of music to improve a person’s physical and mental health. Since its development, music has been a huge part of our culture and everyday lives – so why not use its comforting traits to ease your office burnout? Pop in your favorite tunes, and dance to your heart’s content!
#2 Meditate/Reflect
Sometimes, you just need to stop and think. There are moments when distracting ourselves with activities will not solve our inner turmoil. In these cases, we need to simply sit down – or go to a quiet place – and reflect. We all need “alone time”, some more than others. Utilize these silent moments to think about where you want to be, what your real goals are, and how you want to serve others using your talents.
#1 Plan Ahead
One of the main reasons why people feel burned out in their jobs is due to overwhelming tasks and expectations. If you’re the type of person who has trouble managing time wisely, it would help to plan your days ahead. After your usual routine at home, carve out a few minutes to list down top priorities for the next morning. I’ve had this habit for years and I can attest to how effective it is in helping me cope with daily tasks.
Don’t let work burnout get the best of you. Either work it out – or work around it.
If it’s been a long time and you have tried everything to make things work at the office, maybe it’s time to look for more meaningful alternatives. There are folks who have found happiness with unconventional careers, so don’t be afraid to stray away from the herd! Talk to people whom you admire (friends, family, mentors). Get advice, reflect, and write down your dreams.
There’s nothing wrong with putting yourself first. After all, you can’t learn to love a job if you can’t love yourself.

The Ultimate Guide to Learning Anything Faster

If only I could have learned Spanish three years ago…”
“If only I learned about investing when I was still in my early twenties…”
If only.
For many of us, there are more things we want to learn than we have time for. And as information becomes more readily accessible online, the number of things we want to learn has only increased. That means that the only variable we can actually control is the time we spend learning them.
Shortening the learning curve is a topic that’s been studied for many years, and this guide will cover the fundamental core principles of learning faster. Were these principles perfectly in place, you could leverage them to push yourself to learn faster and master any category of learning, including languages, business skills, musical instruments and more. To quote Tony Robbins: "One skill you want to master in this day and age we live in, if you want to have an extraordinary life, is the ability to learn rapidly."
So, here are those principles:

1. Don't reinvent the wheel.

Why reinvent a wheel that’s already been created? The common tendency we all have when learning something new is trying to master it alone and underestimating the amount of time and effort that can be saved by getting help from someone who’s already learned it.
Think back to a time when you first learned how to speak a new language or obtain a new skill. You probably had a steep learning curve initially, but after a few years or even months of experimenting and making mistakes, you could design a shortcut to help a friend avoid those same mistakes you made early on.
In order to achieve mastery faster, our first step should be to consult the top players in the field, and model the path they have already carved out for us. As Robbins puts it: "Many great leaders have proven that the fastest way to master any skill, strategy or goal in life is to model those who have already forged the path ahead. If you can find someone who is already getting the results that you want and take the same actions they are taking, you can get the same results
"It doesn’t matter what your age, gender or background is," Robbins continues. "Modeling gives you the capacity to fast track your dreams and achieve more in a much shorter period of time. In this day and age, it’s possible to retrieve almost any solution that’s out there in the form of books, blogs, training videos, consultants, someone in our network -- the list goes on."
To quote yet another wise individual, this time Pablo Picasso: "Good artists copy. Great artists steal."

2. Deconstruct the skill.

The next step to hacking the learning curve is to deconstruct the skill you see into its basic, fundamental components. Break down the parts and find the most important things to practice first. (See Pareto’s Principle, which describes a goal of generating 80 percent of results by putting in 20 percent of the effort.)
It turns out that this concept can apply to almost anything in life, including:
  • Business (80 percent of sales comes from 20 percent of customers)
  • Employee efficiency (80 percent of results comes from 20 percent of employees)
  • Happiness (80 percent of happiness comes from 20 percent of relationships)
  • Travel experiences (80 percent of our travels may be summed up from 20 percent of our highlight experiences)
Embracing this way of thinking only goes to show that very few things actually make a difference in any aspect of our lives, including learning. Our goal then, should be to separate the 20 percent of our learning materials that will give us 80 percent of the result.
As it turns out, fast-learning experts have already embraced this ideology, and have provided some concrete examples on how to do this effectively. In his TED talk, Josh Kaufman said he believed that you don’t need 10,000 hours in order to master a skill. Instead, the key is to embrace the first 20 hours, and learn the most important subset skills within that time frame to get the maximum amount of impact. Numerous studies in the fields of motor and cognitive skill acquisition have established that the first few hours of practicing a new skill always generate the most dramatic improvements in performance. (See Parkinson’s Law.)

3. Stop multitasking.

Multitasking is a guilty pleasure we’ve all developed in the age of constant notifications and mobile applications. From checking our emails every ten minutes, to scrolling through our Instagram feed, to welcoming co-workers coming by our desk for a “five-minute break”: Multitasking can be one of the biggest hurdles preventing us from learning faster.
Think about your own computer. When you have 20-plus different tabs open on your browser, your computer begins to slow down and it takes longer to process every action afterwards. Studies have shown that when an individual gets distracted, it takes an average of 25 minutes to return to the task at hand. What’s more important to note is that a study by the University of California Irvine found that a worker applies himself or herself only 11 minutes before becoming distracted.
The same thing applies to our long-term focus. Many of us aren’t able to dedicate the six-to-12-plus months it takes to learn a skill because of the countless new projects, ideas, or hobbies that come our way. And when we decide to shift our focus to a new distraction, it’s much more difficult to find the same passion and drive to focus on the previous skill.
Once you have deconstructed the subset skills that will give you the maximum amount of results, focus solely on improving those skills and avoid learning anything else until you’ve mastered them.

4. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

This is the part where most of us struggle, and what many of us don’t want to hear is the rule that mastering anything faster requires practice. Learning requires frequency of and persistence in performing the same skill over and over again, until you can do it subconsciously, without having to think about it.
The best performers in the world understand this “secret” to learning faster and become the best, yet rarely talk about its importance because of how unsexy it sounds.
Expert-level performance is primarily the result of expert-level practice, not due to innate talent. As K. Anders. Ericsson, a scientific researcher from Florida State University, elaborated in a paper: “People believe that because expert performance is qualitatively different from normal performance, the expert performer must be endowed with characteristics qualitatively different from those of normal adults. This view has discouraged scientists from systematically examining expert performers and accounting for their performance in terms of the laws and principles of general psychology.”

5. Seek immediate feedback.

In 1960, while they were still an unknown high school rock band, the Beatles went to Hamburg, Germany, to play in the local clubs. The group was underpaid. The acoustics were terrible. The audiences were unappreciative. So what did the Beatles get out of the Hamburg experience? Nonstop hours of playing time, practice and immediate feedback that forced them to get better. That’s the key difference that elevated the Beatles to the top, according to Macolm Gladwell in his book OutliersThe band didn’t just practice in a garage for the sake of practicing; they strived to get in front of a live audience that would provide them immediate criticism and constructive feedback.
As the Beatles grew in skill, audiences demanded more performances -- giving them more playing time. By 1962 they were playing eight hours per night, seven nights per week. By 1964, the year they burst on the international scene, the Beatles had played over 1,200 concerts together. By way of comparison, most bands today don’t play 1,200 times in their entire career. This is why at Rype, we’re solely focused on connecting you with native speaking tutors, who can give you immediate feedback during your lessons.

6. Go Long.

Unfortunately, many of us give up before or during what Seth Godin calls “The Dip.”
Godin says that although it’s important to know when to quit, many potential winners don’t reach success because they quit before the dip. According to Godin, five reasons you might fail to become the best in the world include:
  1. You run out of time (and quit)
  2. You run out of money (and quit)
  3. You get scared (and quit)
  4. You're not serious about it (and quit)
  5. You lose interest (and quit)
Psychologists have also studied what’s known as the transition cycle. This is the cycle of progress we go through whenever we’re experiencing change or a novel event, such as a tragedy or the opportunity to learn something new. There’s a sense of euphoria we all experience when we begin something new. That's why we’re so addicted to seeing notifications on social media, because dopamine gets released each time.
Once the honey-moon phase fades away, we experience the “dip” and our progress begins to plateau or diminish. This is when most of us quit. The reason why this is important is that if you can predict that a dip is coming, when you’re learning anything new, it’s easier to fight through it. More importantly, the dip is there because those persistent enough to stick it out can ride the upward wave that is at the end of the tunnel.
So, to restate these points on how to hack the learning curve:
  • Model an expert who’s been there, and don’t reinvent the wheel.
  • Deconstruct the skills that will deliver 80 percent of results.
  • Stop multitasking.
  • Practice those reps, reps, reps! Then seek immediate feedback.
  • Go long and don’t quit before or during the dip.

Chase Greatness: Giving Up Is Not An Option

Life can be challenging and difficult at times for everyone. Things don’t happen as fast as we want them to, relationships end and jobs are lost. And the list goes on.
We are tempted to give up.
When my twin daughters went to kindergarten, I decided to get my bachelor’s degree. I didn’t get good grades in school and deep down I didn’t believe I was smart enough.
I started with two classes: ‘How to Study’ and ‘Speed Reading’.
Then I continued to take a few classes at a time until I finished. It took me nine and a half years!
There were times I wanted to quit and give up. I never did.
In 1883, an engineer, John Roebling, had the idea to build the Brooklyn Bridge. Other experts told him his idea was impossible. It couldn’t be done.
Washington, Roebling’s son, also an engineer, helped his father design the plan and get financing from the bank.
Next, they hired the crew and began to build the bridge that spans the river between Manhattan and Brooklyn. After a few months, an accident occurred on-site.
John was killed and his son was severely injured. Brain damage left him unable to walk or talk. They were the only ones who knew the plan for the bridge.
Because Washington Roebling still had a clear mind, he developed a communication code as he lay in his bed. He could move one finger.
With that finger he tapped out the code on his wife’s arm to communicate to her the plan so the engineers could continue building the bridge.
Washington Roebling tapped his instructions with one finger for 13 years until the Brooklyn Bridge, an engineering miracle, was finally completed!
Several years ago, Hubs and I went to New York for the first time and walked the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a powerful reminder that we can do the impossible.
How willing are you to accomplish your goals? Are you willing to do what it takes?
Would you continue if you knew it would take 13 years?
When you feel like quitting, remember you only have to take one day at a time. Commit to just one more day. Get focused and spend your time tackling the most important things first.
When we are ready to commit to our dreams, nothing can stop us.
When you feel like quitting, read about people who refuse to give up. Learn from them and join them in living life to the fullest.
If we begin where we are and consistently take small steps, we’ll succeed.
I was only 38 when all four of my daughters were in college. By that time, I had my master’s degree in counseling psychology.
After two more years, I began my private practice. Since then I’ve helped thousands of people change their lives, find happiness and success.
Due to the internet, my reach is unlimited. Thousands of people read my blog. I touch people every day through my courage coaching, ecourses and ebooks.
I believe we have a responsibility to ourselves and to each other. We need to do whatever it takes to succeed, to serve and to live a life of meaning.
Put in the time, effort and dedication. Plan on challenging times and struggle along the way. Remember that you are capable and worthy. This is your time!
You have everything you need inside of you. Choose to face what you fear. Imagine the awesome independence, growth and life that you’re creating as you go beyond fear.
Don’t quit. Don’t give up! Choose to chase greatness. Become obsessed.
Refocus. Put your energy and faith into your dreams. Expect them to come to fruition. Choose to believe that anything is possible. No matter what!
If I can do these things, so can you. You don’t have to be brilliant. You don’t have to have a degree. You only need to decide and take action.
As we come closer to 2015, ask yourself the following questions:
What do I want for myself?
What new experiences would create meaning in my life?
What grand new adventure do I daydream about?
What can I do to get started today?
How can I distance myself from the people, places and things that hinder me?
Give your dreams some serious thought and take massive action. Live without regrets.
