5 Tips to Stay Positive During Recovery

Overall, the addiction recovery phase for drinking problems is quite a strenuous journey that demands immense will power to get back to a healthier life. It takes an individual's time and effort to stay sober and control cravings to stay away from alcohol and other addictive substances.

Moreover, one has to also overcome certain situations that tend to force a person to relapse to old drinking habits. In such, and similar other situations, it is essential to ensure that people stay strong and resolute against any obstacles that can digress them from their commitment to quit alcohol addiction.

As such, anyone trying to win the race against alcohol addiction can experience a relapse. Often, negative thinking becomes a major barrier in an individual's path toward recovery. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the person stays away from any negative influences and remains positive while going through the recovery process.

Here are some simple ways by which a person can stay positive during the difficult phase of recovery:

  1. Stay happy: Overall, happiness is the key to success, even in the case of recovery from an alcohol addiction. This includes staying positive during the whole process. One should indulge in activities and hobbies that interest him or her. This will help the person remain joyful and stay in a better mood.
  2. Exercise regularly: Unlike the popular perception about exercise, it does not necessarily refer to undergoing activities that might exhaust a person completely. It can include a mix of things, including cycling, swimming, jogging, etc. In fact, other relaxation techniques like yoga and Zumba are also excellent ways to release endorphins, the mood-boosting neurotransmitters, in the body. Undoubtedly, physical activities by burning off excess calories and relieving stress, are an excellent way to stay happy.
  3. Communicate with loved ones: During the recovery process, effective communication with loved ones is essential to overcome emotional hurdles. Staying in touch with friends and family is important, as this will help a person in sharing his or her fears, doubts and uncertainties with his or her loved ones. It is also important to instill positivity and inspire the person to continue walking on the path of sobriety.
  4. Have patience: One should remember that sobriety can't be attained in a single day. It requires an individual to stay positive and firm on his or her decision to recover from alcohol addiction. A person should not consider the goal to be impossible and leave the path midway. Instead, he or she should stick firmly to his or her decision by enduring symptoms and undergoing the process patiently. It is important to always remember that though certain goals take time, once achieved they can change one's life completely. Therefore, appreciating even the smallest of achievements can help in staying motivated and positive.
  5. Set goals: A person under recovery should set certain attainable and realistic goals to stay motivated and inspired. It is equally important to ensure that the goals set by the person are well planned or broken into smaller achievable tasks to avoid any kind of overburden on him or her.

Quit alcohol to rediscover life

A person going through the process of recovery from an alcohol addiction should avoid going to places where it is easily available since it increases the risk of relapse. Staying happy is an excellent way to boost one's mental health and to ensure that he or she sticks to his or her goals to attain sobriety. Apart from these, it is also important to focus on self-help instead of seeking help from others to fasten the recovery process.

What It Takes To Be A Success In Life

If you ponder about what it takes to be a success in life, you have to realize certain uneasy aspects of what it is. You got to step out of your comfort zone. Have persistence and determination. Be broke for a while. Lose some friends. Have some sleepless nights. But most people simply do not get it.
So, what does it takes to be successful? Why is it so scary for many people? What can you do to keep going when things get tough? How can you persevere to be a success in life?

Success is not a straight line, and the only way to it is crooked. It is going down in the valley and then back up over a mountain. Most successful people have failed more times than you ever even tried. You should not wait for the stars to realign, you have to reach up and rearrange them the way you want. In this way, you create your constellation.

But there is only one slight difference between what it takes to be a success or a failure, and that is that you cannot stop believing in any way. No matter what anybody says, or tells you, you have to know beyond what is humanly possible.

You have to believe in your mind that you can. Do not allow anyone, even family, friends, acquaintances, teachers, or whoever it is to tell you that what you are dreaming for yourself and your family is not possible.

Anything is possible if you do not stop having faith that you can be a success. You have to plant your seed, water it, and accept it as true, even before it happens. Success requires hard work, persistence, and determination but other things come into account also. Here is some of the stuff it takes to be a success.

To Be a Success - Persistence and Determination
Persistence and Determination are a great combination to be successful. Persistence is an incredible quality which allows you to continue doing something or trying to do something, even though it is hard or opposed by other people. Determination is never giving up, especially in your own mind.

How true this is but not simple! So, a part of what it takes to be a success in life is definitely determination and persistence! If you are persistent, you open the door to many more possibilities and have a deeper appreciation for all of the things in life, especially the little things.

If you do not begin or do it, nothing is then possible. Most people do not even try, sadly, and many just try then stop or give up. Very few people try and try over and over, do again and again, and never give up. But those are the people that ultimately succeed and win.

To Be a Success - Hard Work
The bridge between reality and a dream is hard work. No ideas work unless you dare to do the job. Ideas without execution are simply disillusions. You can have the best concepts in the world, yet you have to understand that your ideas and the way it supposes to happen are not the only approaches in which it can occur.

To be a success, you have to stop making excuses and focus on making it happen. You have to focus on one thing, one area at the time. Put all of your energy in watering one area because if you spread the water across many seeds, you do not have as much water for one seed.

So, when you have mastered that one seed; you can then move on to the next one. If you believe in your dream enough or in what you are trying to accomplish, then you can see it. You have to foster the belief in what you are dreaming, put in the work so that it may become a reality. The way to the top and to be a success is through persistence, intelligence and hard work.

To Be a Success - Words Become Reality
Many of us are where we are based on upon what we believe. And it is not what you believe on the surface, but deep down in your subconscious that is holding you back from moving into the life, you feel you deserve. Your unconscious is running a tape through your mind telling yourself you are not good enough, not worthy, not smart, which is an audiotape that is playing for too many people.

If you are not conscious of that, then you end up acting out of this belief system and not out of what you know to be the truth. You are, in part, where you are today because of what you have been saying about yourself.

Words are like seeds. When you speak something out, you give life to what you are saying. And if you continue to say negative words, it can eventually become your reality. You are planting seeds when you talk, and at some point, you are going to eat that fruit. To be a success, you have to plant the right seeds. You are going to reap fruits from the exact grains you have been sowing.

In other words, you cannot talk negative, expect to live a positive life and be successful. You cannot talk defeat and expect victory. And you cannot talk of lack, not enough, cannot afford it, or never get ahead and expect to have abundance.

To Be a Success - Actions and Change
To be a success, you rather have to prophesy good things and wins about yourself. Then your life will move in the direction of your thoughts and words. Too many people go around and prophecy just the opposite. Things such as "I never get any good breaks in life," "business is slow," "I probably get laid off," "Flu season is here, I will get it."

Most people do not realize that they are predicting defeat. It is just like they are calling negativity in.

You have to act the other way around and believe that good things are already yours, and act as if they already are. This way, you can draw this to yourself while you are working towards it.

This way your actions are in alignment with what you say and think. The actions and choices you have previously made are created because of what you believe to be true for yourself. When you want to be a success, you have to act and change the way you think. You have the right to be great. Be different. Stand out. Change your destiny. And quit talking that it will not happen.

To Be a Success - Willpower
It is not enough to think you can be a success; you have to declare it out loud. Do it in front of a mirror. You have to speak out your future. Those words, repeated over and over, will get deep down inside of you. They will not only change your outlook but also change who you are.

Yes, life is hard at times, but you have no option. Handling the tragedies of life is difficult. It is hard when you put all of your efforts into something, and it does not work. Misfortunes happen to all of us, but when it happens, the real question is what are you going to do with it? Ask yourself the resources that you need to be a success and how to make it happen.

You have to fight back, one inch at a time. There will be many sleepless nights, but you will get to the next level if you keep moving. You have the choice to either give up or keep going. If you fail and still want to be a success, try again.

To Be a Success - Self-Education and Sleepless Nights
You have to read books instead of getting frivolous things. Material things come and go, but knowledge and experience are indestructible. You have to work on yourself and fill your mind with what you need to be a success. All people fail, even the most successful, so forget about your past and make the rest of your life the best of your life.

Most people read a lot of books on how to become successful, but writers tend to leave out the dark parts and rarely put them in the books. So, when others tell you that you will never amount to anything, just keep grinding. Do not stop hustling because these people are waiting for the time when they can say: "I told you so."

Do not let life tear you down. Do not spend so much time comparing yourself to others. Do not try to be in somebody else's life. Instead, do your own thing. Keep going and believe you can be a success. It will bring you where you want to be. Have confidence in what you do. So be relentless.

To Be a Success - Friends' Loss and Help
Remember that anytime you walk into a room, know that you are special. You have to know that you mean something to this world. Sometimes, the outcomes are not always what you desire them to be but real failure in life is not trying at all.

You are the master of your fate. And it is very likely that you will lose friends along your journey to be a success, but they will be replaced by value and quality rather than quantity. The path to success is the definition you have of it. Real success is what makes you happy, but you have to be willing to work for it.

But realize that to be a success, you cannot do it alone. You have to ask for help. Most successful people will help you by giving advice, principles to live by, solutions and not money. Some might not step up and help you but others will. But know your worth and let no one put you down. And do not assume but ask.

And yes, to be a success, people will laugh, try to talk you out of your dreams, or turn their back on you. They will not understand what you are trying to achieve, and a lot of people will not be ready for it. But let me remind to continue to dream. It does not matter where you start at, or who tells you what or who you can or cannot be, I believe in you.

Pains & Pleasures Make Our Life Meaningful

Life on our planet consists of many twins like Day and Night, Good and Bad, Birth and Death, Pains and Pleasures, etc. Lazy and easy-going people prefer pleasures forgetting the truth 'Pleasures are impossible without pains.' Nobody remembers the good work of road builders, when taking a smooth drive down the highways.

Pains are the feelings of discomfort that a person experiences internally. The pains of one person cannot be felt and explained by another like the taste of a chocolate which can be understood by anybody. Moreover, the intensity of pain varies depending on the physical strength and will power of the individual. Pain is also known as strain, tiredness, fatigue, and failure.

Pains are caused by the hard-work, Insults, Injuries, Illness and Loss of near and dear ones. They can be grouped into physical and mental types. A truck driver develops the body strain after a long trip whereas a scientist after a hectic research in the lab feels the stress or depression. Sometimes, a mix of mental and physical sufferings is possible when a person applies all the energies. A surgical operation is a good example for this. Sacrifice is the only pain that produces pleasures to all.

Pains should not to be shared with others, but to be suffered alone without expressing outwardly. Because they cause inconvenience to other people through loss of time, strain, and money. The best thing of pains is that they remind the humans to be careful and not casual in their life.

Pleasures make our life rosy and happy. A small candy brings smile to a weeping kid. They become memorable when shared with others. However, most of us wish to share the problems and pains only enjoy the happiness privately. Sex is the only pleasure that culminates into a strain during pregnancy and a horrible pain during the birth.

The Excesses are risky. Too much of pain and failure upset the spirit of life itself. Chronic illness frustrates any person. Likewise, excessive pleasure makes us blind and to behave abnormally. However, Life gets charm if the grief and pain are alternating. No one can define the right mix of pains and pleasure because they are beyond the control of humans.

Hard work begins with pain but yields pleasure afterwards. Years of practice and learning alone bring success. Pains and pleasures are the two eyes of life. Treat them equally to seek bliss like Lord Buddha.

Difficulty Vanish When Faced Fearlessly (By Rosemarie Sumalinog Gonzales)

Is there any point in your life that you experienced extreme difficulty? The time when you felt desperate and hopeless and had no idea how to keep moving forward? As a matter of fact, we all go through struggles at one point in our lives. But the crucial part is how we respond to it. We can build the tenacity to face any challenges that we meet.

When we faced trials in life bravely, it builds our character. Oftentimes, the moments in life we are most proud of are the ones where we overcame adversity to accomplish something worthwhile. We need to do something that pushes our limits and beyond. We will realize that we are capable of accomplishing much than we ever imagined.

Every time we find ourselves stuck or facing a life challenge, we simply write down our thoughts in a journal. This allows us to get out of our head and separate ourselves from the impact of the experience. It brings the conscious brain into play while reducing the effects of the unconscious, emotional brain.

Think of a time when we felt more confident than we have ever felt before. Go back in time to all those memories that have robbed us of our confidence and create new meanings to them. We can literally go back in time and change our memories by repeatedly picturing the event while anchored into a positive state, so the meaning of the memory will become a positive one.

The next time we find ourselves facing a challenge, ask what someone we admire would do in our situation. One of the quickest ways to get what we want in life is to find someone who has it and do what they have done. Practice standing tall and embodying a posture of unbreakable confidence everywhere we go.

Focus always on the positive. Never let negative thoughts, feelings or emotions overpower us. We need to have self-discipline. The key to mastering self-control and willpower in the face of a challenge is learning how to build positive habits because most often we are afraid of the unknown and we get stressed on the process.

When times get rough, we need to be resilient in order to cope up. We need to prevent our negative feelings to surface by focusing on the positive things when faced with adversity. By doing this, we are able to face challenges fearlessly and take control of the situation no matter how demanding the trials in life are.

I want to dedicate this article to Arlyn Lanticse, my colleague and friend who suffered the same predicament I had.

Why You Shouldn't Speak When Angry and What to Do Instead

Man Wearing White Dress Shirt With Black Necktie
"Speak when you are angry and you will make the best speech you will ever regret"

Ambrose Bierce

When you are angry you feel a sea of anger rising within you and the easiest way to drain it is by lashing out at the source.

It's natural, it's psychological, but it's the trigger that makes the difference.

Why are you angry, for what reason? Are you angry because you saw a man hit an innocent dog on the road or are you angry because your mother said there were no more meatballs left?

Anger is your reaction to a trigger, and whether you choose to cuss out someone or pump iron at the gym is your way of dealing with it.

But anger-laced speech - especially that's impulsive and not thoroughly thought through - would wreak havoc on relationships, cost you professionally and maim your reputation.

But isn't imploding inside unhealthy for you? When that sea of anger is in turbulence within you, isn't it causing the maximum harm to the person himself?

No, we get to how you deal with anger without saying hurtful words later, here's why you shouldn't speak when angry.

Why you shouldn't speak when angry?

Emotions and not logic control your words - Saying something hurtful is a knee-jerk reaction to being angered. You might call your husband a 'vile selfish loser' but in reality you don't mean any of it.

Psychologically speaking, hurtful words are your way of hurting the person who has upset you. So you say things that'd hit home. Your entire speech is governed by negative emotions when you are angry and these emotions are mostly concentrated in your upper chest area (hence the tightening of the chest), shoulders and forearms (you feel your shoulders stiff up when you are angry), face (that's why you go red) and the amygdala part of the brain.

You might say something you'd regret - And that happens about every time. Whether it is those hurtful words or letting out information that you were not supposed to divulge, speaking when angry would invariably make you regret.

And you might not know all the facts - You might end up not only looking like a negative person but also an idiot for saying something that's not true or downright stupid. What's that thing they say? Improve your argument, don't raise your voice.

You reveal you are a weak person - It takes a lot of mental and emotional strength to not speak when angry. When every iota of your body is itching to react, when the amygdala is going mad for some reaction, you tone it down.

Keep calm and don't be provoked. That is true strength of character and will power, not lashing out.

How to deal with anger constructively?

Anger is your reaction to something. You need to find out if the reason for your anger is really a reason or is it just an excuse for you to blow some steam.

We live in a fast-paced life and we get stressed. A lot of times this stress comes out on people close to us and by the slightest of triggers.

The first step is to understand these triggers. Do you get angry when you have been hungry for too long? It's more common than you think, you should see the way men rage after hitting it at the gym.

And then become quite gentlemanly once they eat. Hunger and anger are associated, when your body demands nutrients and the brain is desperately sending signals to you to fill that demand, you are irritable and prone to react.

If your kid has suddenly developed an anger issue, it might be time to have a little talk. Is he getting bullied in school? Did he take something you said to heart and is dwelling on it?

There are valid reasons behind getting angry and once you understand these reasons and the emotions associated with them, you can work on it better.

Challenge the negative beliefs - Negative thoughts are to anger what fuel is to fire. So when you had a fight with your spouse and you want to think that 'yeah, it's not like she cares about me' challenge this thought by telling the brain 'no that's not right she does care about me and the family. She works hard for us and loves us'.

You undermine the negative beliefs by challenging them. And subsequently your anger dissipates too.

Talk about the issue, but not immediately - Keep yourself busy when you are angry. Go watch your favorite TV show or listen to good music and then later when you cool down, talk about the issue.

And it's not just when you are angry with someone but also when you are angry about something. Talking always help.

Meditate - Dealing with anger is all about controlling your emotions and the best way to control your emotions is to always be in control of them, at any given time. Meditation strengthens the brain's ability to deal with emotions and also changes negative emotions to positive.

You can also do the deep breathing exercise. Probably the most recommended anger management tip is to start breathing deeply. Also dissociation works, distance yourself from what's making you angry either physically or mentally.

Remember that you can make the maximum impact by saying words that are logical and correct instead of saying something that is vile and hurtful.

Learning to Tap Into Your Will Power Through Auto-Suggestion

Here lies the art of auto-suggestion. Auto-suggestion is self-suggestion. Suggestion can be used to empower an individual. Man can suggest all that he wishes. By merely suggesting to one's self in the defiance of reason what you shall have in vibrant faith. Faith, a state of being so stern that it demands out of the ether of spirit the material equivalent of the expression it drives. When we break into faith, we see what we want and hold claim to it through will.
It's of the up most importance for you to combine strong positive emotion with your auto-suggestions. Faith being the most potent of emotional states. Doubt can not be allowed to narrate your story if you should wish to claim that which you desire. Remember this, hold faith steady and true, laugh, for doubt will lose the war with you. Empower your will to cast your desire into the wheel of life, saying to life "I have come to claim what's mine for I saw it in my mind."
I'd like to bring to your attention the power of association. The mind is an associating machine. How often does the smell of something associate you with the memory of long thought of? You can trick your subconscious mind, by the use of imagination we can devise associating schemes to auto-suggest. This is really powerful stuff, consider this. The popularity of religious ceremonies and rituals. They all hold claim to the power over their sub-conscious through association. It is a powerful force when faith is not so easily grasped. When do you associate something with something else? Can you use that association to affect the sub-conscious in such a way that it benefits you? You may have to engage the imagination to solve this one. Remember minds aren't all together that different, read some literature on ritual work if you wish to take this route. Although acquiring stern faith is a higher prize in my opinion.
We have witnessed the power of suggestion, understood it's amplified under the authority of emotion and faith. We know the power of the imagination is capable of bringing an idea in to physical form by means of knowledge and the application of practical steps. We watched our memories and ideas be stimulated into different realms of thought through association. I encourage you to demand of life what you desire. It shall be yours through skillful employment and defiantly protesting "I will not be moved". Bless you and may your hearts desire be given unto you.

One Surefire Trick For Increasing Your Willpower

There's a way to set yourself up for success. It's all in the framing.

Suppose you are facing a willpower challenge: You're a regular drinker but you've decided that you will no longer drink every day, but only on Friday evenings from now on.
Now, if I told you, "There is only one way to succeed in this goal, but there are many ways to fail," you could probably make sense of that: The only way to succeed is to make it all the way to Friday without having a drink. But there are many ways to fail. You could have a drink on Saturday. You could have a drink on Sunday. You could have a drink on Monday. (You get the point.)
But here's the thing. I if I said to you: "There is only one way to fail, and there are many ways to succeed," you could probably make sense of that, too: The only way to fail is to have an alcoholic beverage at the wrong time. But when facing temptation, there are many ways to succeed. There are many alternative activities you can do instead of drinking. You can take a bath. You can play basketball. You can have a bottle of sparkling water. You can go for a walk. (You get the point.)
So which is it?
Is there just one way to succeed and many ways to fail? Or is there one way to fail with many ways to succeed?
The truth is, neither of those claims is true or false full stop, but each becomes true or false depending on how you tell the story—how you lump things together and split them apart.

So it's entirely up to you how you frame your challenge.
But here’s the thing: Seeing many paths to success increases optimism
In psychology, there is a phenomenon known as the subadditivity effect. It's the tendency to judge the probability of the whole to be less than the probabilities of its parts. So, when we estimate our chances of success in reaching a goal, we can do it two ways. We can consider just one success condition:
A. I will resist drinking alcohol when next tempted.
Or we can consider many success conditions:
B. I will go for a walk instead of drinking.
C. I will take a bath instead of drinking.
D. I will talk with a friend instead of drinking.
E. I will find some other activity to do instead of drinking.
Now suppose we estimate probabilities (P) for A through E. If the subadditivity effect holds, then our estimates will bear this relationship to each other:
P(A) < P(B) + P(C) + P(D) + P(E)
For instance, we might assign probabilities like this:
P(A) = .6; P(B) = .2; P(C) = .2; P(D) = .2; P(E) = .2
So we might give ourselves a 60 percent chance of success if we consider only one success condition, but an 80 percent chance if we consider multiple success conditions.
It’s important that we don’t explicitly make all of the above estimates and compare them in a live situation. If we do, we might break the spell—we might notice the inequality and start revising our estimates so they add up as equal. But we don’t want that. We want to take advantage of the fact that our vague and fuzzy probability judgements will be higher if we don’t look at things too closely.
What we’re looking for is a way to increase our optimism. To do that, it’s sufficient to take our single success condition and break it into multiple success conditions, while doing the opposite with our conditions for failure.
And the reason we want to increase our optimism is because increasing optimism increases willpower.
You might protest that using this tactic will produce false optimism, that we're tricking ourselves into being more optimistic than we objectively should be. But the thing about optimistic probability judgements is that, when you mix them with willpower, they can become self-fulfilling prophecies. That's not just positive thinking mumbo-jumbo. It's game theory.
George Ainslie showed us in Breakdown of Will how our tendency to overcome a temptation at one point in time depends on how likely we think it is that we will also overcome similar temptations in the future. If we think it more likely that we will overcome those temptations in the future, then we will be more likely to overcome the temptation now. (I explain this dynamic in much more detail here )
So what's the bottom line?
Well, if you want your willpower to be stronger, it will help if you can raise your expectation of success. If you want to raise your expectation of success, you can take advantage of the subadditivity effect for probability judgements. And that means you should frame your challenge so there is just one way to fail, and there are many ways to succeed.
Now go ahead, pick your most pressing willpower challenge. Remind yourself that there is only one way to fail. And then ask yourself, "What are all the ways I can succeed?"
