How to Defeat the Grasshopper and Elephant Mentality in the Workplace and in Life?

You know, we can learn a valuable lesson from the grasshopper, the elephant and the way people think. Here's why. If you want to keep a grasshopper for a pet, then all you need to do is to trap that grasshopper in a jar with a lid over it. And just like many of us, an imprisoned grasshopper will try desperately to escape using his powerful legs to smash the wall of resistance in search of freedom time and time again. At the outset, that grasshopper looked very persistent and determined to change its situation. And it would try and try again without any luck of breaking itself free. Then something happens, the grasshopper stops, the persistence of escaping stops. At this point, we all know that the grasshopper will never try to escape by jumping out of the jar with the lid. At the moment, you can take the lid off, and your (pet) grasshopper will not escape because once the grasshopper has learned that its situation did not change time after time no matter what it did in the past, its convinced that it will never change in the future. And it will settle upon its new life with no desire to reach beyond that comfort zone.

Many of us know about how elephant trainers teach elephants to stay in place. They get the baby elephant and lock a strong chain around its ankle and just as the grasshopper the baby elephant will pull and tug until it stops. And even once the elephant grows into an adult, it does not change in its beliefs. The trainer could tie a thin rope around the same ankle of the elephant, and it would not try to break away.

So there are similar parallels here in this simple life lesson between the grasshopper, the elephant, and people who have given up and have adopted the same mentality as the grasshopper and elephant-becoming comfortable and complacent with no sense of going on even if success is within reach. Mentally this person sees it as unreachable and unobtainable-it's too hard they may say. There are many problems with the grasshopper and elephant mentality when adopted by an individual, a group, or even an industry such as:

Ø The individual sees themselves as not having the ability to fit in with peers or able to leverage newer technologies

Ø They may prematurely size up the situation or competition and determine and perhaps talk themselves out of becoming successful by telling themselves: "I'm too old," "I don't have enough resources," "I don't have enough experience," "I don't want to get involved" or maybe "I was born on the wrong side of the tracks." We all know the song, but we keep singing it.

The game of chess is another example that is comparable to the game of our life. If you want to be successful, it's how you play the game. Chess is a game of change and adaptation. You have specific rules that players must follow in order to set up the game board. You have rules on how and in what direction the chess pieces must move on the board. Then you have rules on how to capture a chess piece, and finally how to win the game. Even though in chess there are rules to the game and one must follow them; no one plays the game the same because there are millions of ways to win and millions of ways to lose, but the outcome depends on the interactive interaction process between the two players. So similarly there are rules that govern change, and there are rules of adaptation to the change, but there is no one way that a person must take that leads to the path of success. Why? Because everyone is different, no two people are alike even if they were identical twins. Change and adaptation depend on the person's mindset be it positive or negative. It can also depend on that person's biological makeup and the psychological makeup and/or the environment in which they dwell in. That's why when talking about what situation will best promote efficiency in the workplace, it is best to think about what will specifically lead to increased proficiency and productivity of the individual employee. The environment for one thing or the workplace culture can help to improve efficiency. So, to avoid the grasshopper and elephant mentality as a human being, you must be able to accept, respond, and adapt to change because if not you will be stuck in that position not knowing the ability within you that is greater than the external forces. Discard your mental blockages because it will only lead to regression, limitations, stagnation, and ultimately a failure in reaching your goals. Remember you may limit yourself not your circumstances in life.

Pray With Yourself: Troubles Go Away!

When you persistently put things into your mind and you are consistently programming yourself with habits: Congratulations, you are praying, putting spells on yourself or whatever. That is not a fantasy I am making up, that is reality. Sure, in this game and real situation of life, it genuinely what we are, say, do and all. Energy is controlled, not created.

When I think about vibration, realities, fantasies, and everything. They all stem from one force really: Thought. They all stem from that, whether it comes anywhere from low to high, and the vibrational measure of the thoughts create our reality and nothing else.

I am also saying that ultimately, if we are winners, it is our virtue. If we are losers, it is our own fault. We get away with nothing and benefit to pay to the genuine measure of it all.

When I think about genuine psychic power and all of that, that is what I think of, thoughts, vibrations and creations that come from all, not anything acting outside of ourselves. My point is to get to the source of your troubles and genuinely work on them going away. Do not look to anyone or anything else to pay for you, act for you or really think for you.

You may or may not agree with me on those points I just mentioned, but you understand this if you have gotten this far into the article: Reality works the same from top to bottom and for winners and losers alike, everything is actions and consequences for everyone and everything, including God, Goddess, Power, Source, Universe, Existence, everything and whatever.

So, I would like to end this article a little differently: Reality does not depend on luck, it depends on how we genuinely use the laws of reality in definite ways. If we go against them, we lose. If we go with them in right directions, we win.

Different realities work by different rules of course, but one thing unites them all: If we play by those rules in the right way, we are successful at those realities. If we are wrong, we are wrong, that is it, unless we change directions and become right.

I learned nothing valuable at Rainbow Bridge Center School from 1984 to 1987 except that lesson about genuinely winning. I learned nothing academic from that school really except that life lesson. Sure, I pretended not to know fractions or understand advanced math and language just so that I would fit in with the other kids and not seem "too smart for my own good" or too knowledgeable about life. If you want to win, you must work with the laws of reality and not against them, is the ultimate reality. Breaking the law and doing genuinely wrong is always cheating, destruction and negative creation is always cheating. Production and positive creation is always legitimate winning. Indeed, destruction, negative creation and cheating are always bad. I did not see the one lesson I learned as a penalty, I saw this lesson as the ultimate understanding of how life and existence work.

To shorten this to understandable terms: You must line up your wish bone with your backbone to get them to really work together as prayer must be backed up with motivated action also to get results in reality.

Guide On How To Move On After Failure

Who wants to fail? I bet no one. Failure not only crushes you, it also wastes your time or money. Sometimes, it does both. Unfortunately, we can't run away from failure-unless we die.

What you have to do is learn how to pick yourself up and move on with your life.

Sara Blakely story

A story is told of Sara Blakely, an enthusiastic entrepreneur who lost in Richard Branson's reality TV show, "Rebel Billionaire." While many people have failed in life and business, Sara's story is unique as she moved from one failure to the other without giving up.

After losing in the show, she started selling fax machines, a business that also failed miserably. She then started selling pantyhose. According to Sara, she spent over two years in it and made no sales to brag about.

While still doing her pantyhose business, she saw a red backpack from her mom's attic which became her trademark. She could walk with it to her presentations and at some point people started making fun of her.

Using the backpack as a signature, she started Sarah Blakely foundation, a foundation that sends women to college and helps them start their businesses.

Every woman sent to college or helped to start a business is given a backpack. According to Sarah, the women are usually more excited of the backpack than the money. Sara says that the backpack acts as a symbol of the women's potential.

Sara Blakely foundation has over the years grown and so has the pantyhose business. Now, the pantyhose company generates over $250 million in revenue every year.

Picking yourself from failure

Sara's story is a true definition of the never giving up attitude. You should always pick yourself up and move ahead regardless of what happens in your life. This is usually easily said than done. Here are tips to help you pick yourself after failure:

View your failures as a life lesson: for every failure you encounter you learn something new. When Sara failed at selling fax machines she learnt that people were moving away from using the machines thus she had to start something new.

Failures mean that it's not the right time: you should realize that when you fail at something it doesn't mean that you can't do it or you are weak. It sometimes means that the time is not yet right.

Sticking with the story of Sara, although, her pantyhose business didn't excel initially, it later came to be successful and profitable.

Conclusion

The dictionary defines failure in four ways:

  • Lack of success
  • A fracturing or giving way under stress
  • Failing to do or perform
  • The inability to perform a normal function adequately

Regardless of the definitions you need to realize that you will definitely face failure in your life. For you to be successful you need to overcome it.
