The Secret to Successful Goal Setting

Woman Lacing Up Her Gray and Pink Nike Low-top Athletic Shoe

Stop! Check this out before you make any more goals!

Don't be like everyone else; most people make their goals incorrectly. You know, like the guy down the street with the brand new jogging shoes and suit. You want to bet he doesn't make it from January to March?

The one goal that many people make is to get into shape. (A friend of mine told me, I'm always in shape, sometimes apple shaped, and sometimes pear shaped) Now be honest. How many years have you made that resolution?

With goals in hand, it's off to the gym we go!

You know it's one of those moments where you feel like you've been here before. It's time to clear the mind and hit the weights. You have a lot of toning-up to do so you walk over to the weights. And start your journey to body perfection. And by mid January you're so sore and tired you're ready to give up.

It's really bad when you start looking for excuses not to go to the gym. But hang on; a good excuse will be coming just around the corner! It doesn't matter what it is, like the man said "any old excuse will do." So yours comes and you stop going to the gym.

There's a better way than quitting!

The secret to success is not to set those big goals.

I know... everyone... and I mean everyone will tell you to write down your goals, that one big goal so you can keep it in front of you. You know the drill, put it on the refrigerator, bathroom mirror, beside you bed so it's the first and last thing you see every day.

Tell me the truth. Do you really look at those big goals once you start falling behind? After a few weeks of getting further behind don't you just avoid them like the strange people that live next door?

Are you ready for a better way?

You are!

Great!

Set small, achievable goals!

Don't do like they tell you; set a goal something like "I will lose 40 pounds in three months."

The problem here my friend is when you miss the mark on the goal, you get discouraged and quit. And this is not good. If you aren't careful you will create a habit of quitting. And a habit that is let go for too long is hard to break.

For a goal to be achievable it has to become part of your routine. And to be part of your routine, you must rewire your brain.

So we set small goals, get some victories and start reprogramming the mind.

Start with something like "I will exercise for 10 minutes three days a week."

After you get your brain reprogrammed to the exercise routine, then you make incremental increases to your workout set.

You will add one more rep to a work set, or another exercise routine. A simple progression with proper performance of the exercise and persistence wins in the long run.

Then one day you will look back and be amazed at where you came from... and you will know where you're going.

Just to condense it, start small, then do incremental increases to your workout set that you properly do, and be persistent. Don't give up.

The Mind of A Champion

What does it take to be a champion, an indisputable winner; what makes them different? You may imagine its extraordinary talent, and sometimes it is, but the reality is extraordinary talent is a rarity. It takes something beyond average and far more than mediocrity to be a champion. It takes perseverance; perseverance always prevails.

This phenomenon requires an attitude that refuses to accept defeat. Champions always get back up, no matter how long or hard they fall. Quitting, giving up or in and letting go are never a consideration in the mind of a champion. They understand that in life you will find a way or find an excuse. Champions never own a 'loser's limp' bag, they offer no excuses because they fail to recognize a loss. Champions understand that a perceived failure is a mere testing of faith; they will reach the goal. They carry the illusion of defeat straight to the next win.

Champions understand that in life one cannot be poor who has less, only those who desire more. They rarely bother to assess or compare their talent; their attention is focused squarely on achieving the goal. They don't need a handicap when tallying their score, understanding that handicaps exist only in the mind. You can't accept the things you can't see. Champions know that 'the me is see is the me I will be.' They are careful to see what they want to be and not what others think they are or can become.

Who are the champions? They are all around you. It may be difficult to recognize them because you don't know or understand their goals. The best way to identify them is in their refusal to give up or give in. Look for the ones who seem to be extremely tested yet refuse to give up. Champions always exhibit persistence; a determination to succeed, they persevere no matter the difficulty. The one who refuses to give up always prevails.

While it may seem that champions are called upon to let go of a lot, they understand that real security lies not in what they have but in what they can do without. In the end is it always worth it to them because they never gave up and never gave in; they simply refused to accept defeat. That's how they became a champion; this is the mind of a champion.

If you want to join this elite group you must get inside the mind of a champion and think like them. Persist, persevere and prevail. There is a raging fire within champions that propels them to press on, press on, press on.

The Palace of Persistence

The palace of persistence is a special place in your psyche that believes quitting is beneath your dignity. It is an attitude that spans the ages, in fact, all of your life time. It is who you are. There is another trait that is embraced in this special place, that of discernment. Those who don't believe in quitting are discerning about committing. They gather facts and carefully consider them, and they should. They are making a concrete commitment to persevere to the win.

To be truly discerning means that you make certain your desire to commit ensures that no one will be harmed by your actions, that the goal is worthy of the pursuit and that the win is meaningful. It has to matter more to you than any obstacles you may face. Once you have carefully examined these few facts the commitment is effortless. You believe in the goal and are engaged in the pursuit of it. Then you enter the palace of persistence.

Your commitment demands a pursuit of running to win with never a thought of stopping, no matter how difficult the endurance test may become. You are in it to win it. This is the hallmark attitude of a winner. You simply don't want to be the one who didn't. Your refusal to accept second place is based on one simple fact that you understand. The winner is the one who stands up last after being knocked down. Being knocked down is a part of the pursuit. If it were easy it would not take such effort or examination of what is involved in making the commitment. The principle of persistence means you fully intend to get up last after the final opponent has fallen and given up, tapped out and quit. You simply must.

From deep within rises the command, 'Get up, get up, get up.' And you do. Discipline, tenacity and determination are housed in your palace of persistence. You draw on it from that special place where winners reside, where the essence of you exists. The difference between those who tap out and those who win is perseverance, grit and determination; it is an attitude that cannot and will not be defeated. Why? Because quitting is beneath the dignity of one whose attitude lives in the palace of persistence! Commitment is the key to the palace doors, where all who enter win! Get up, unlock the door and adopt the attitude necessary to run to the win.

Is Quitting Your Default Coping Mechanism?

Have you ever woken up in the morning feeling completely unenthusiastic about working? Have you ever felt frustrated with your job or your key relationship? Would you agree that whether it's a bad job or an unnerving relationship, there is at least one time in your life when you have considered quitting? Have you ever felt guilty for feeling that way? I am quite sure you have! And that is because we have been taught to believe that quitting is synonymous with failure. But you know what? Quitting is not necessarily a bad choice! Sometimes the work we do or the relationships that we are in are just not worth continuing.

Having said that, it is also important to make sure that we avoid quitting prematurely! And the best way to prevent taking any kind of rash decision is to try this...

1. Take a break. Have some fun. Most poor decisions can be avoided by hitting the pause button. When you are stressed, burnt out, exhausted and frustrated chances are that you may end up making some rash decisions that may prove to be unwise in the long run. So give yourself the time you need to make a wise decision. Allow your head to clear before you make a decision that changes your life. Ask yourself, "How can I use this frustration to energize myself to reach my goals?"

2. Weigh the situation carefully. Try to be objective and weigh the situation carefully. Take the help of a friend if necessary. It is a lot easier for another person to evaluate your situation accurately that you can do for yourself. Remind yourself - why you are doing what you are doing and what is your vision beyond this?

3. Think long-term. Quitting is an easy choice when you only consider the short-term consequences. You can relieve your stress almost immediately! However, when making a decision to quit, you must also consider the long-term consequences. In fact, you must reconsider quitting if the long-term consequences are too severe. A little relief now may not be worth the long-term pain. Also consider who all will be impacted by your decision. Your boss? Colleagues? Family? Just be aware that your children (if any) are always watching you. Be sure to set a good example for them to model. Consider the message that you are sending to your children. Would you advise them to react similarly to an identical situation?

4. Take a new approach. Maybe you shouldn't quit. Maybe you just need a new plan. Not getting the results you desire is not necessarily a sign that you should call it quits. Poor results indicate an ineffective process. Perhaps all you need is a tweak in your approach. Remember that major accomplishments are usually accompanied by numerous failed attempts. Believe in your ability to learn, grow, and adapt!

5. Own your story. Determine the real reason for quitting. Is it because you don't believe you can be successful? You don't have the necessary resources? You lack the ability to manage your time? You don't enjoy the job or activity any more? Sometime the reasons for quitting are justified and yet sometimes they can be totally absurd. Quitting a second job you don't need so you can spend more time with your children is a good reason to quit. Ending your marriage because your spouse won't pick up his dirty socks might be a bit extreme!

6. Learn from the past. Consider all the times you have given up in the past. How do you feel about those events today? Was quitting a good idea or do you regret it? How are you likely to feel in the future about quitting in your current situation?

7. Sometimes it is necessary to just keep going. There are times when quitting is the best choice. However, when it is not the best choice, it is necessary to be strong and keep going. Stick with that horrible job until you have something else lined up. Give counseling a try before quitting on your relationship.
Remember! If your default coping mechanism is quitting, you may never accomplish anything in life. So take a break before making any hasty decisions. Quitting isn't to be taken lightly. Before making the choice to quit, consider the consequences, consult with a trusted friend, and reflect on the past decisions. Avoid creating long-term challenges to alleviate stress in the short-term.

In the words of Lance Armstrong - "Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever. That surrender, even the smallest act of giving up, stays with me. So when I feel like quitting, I ask myself, which would I rather live with?"
I Look Forward To Hearing From You!

Message From the Universe: Accepting Life As It Comes!

"Struggling and trying to physically manipulate the circumstances of one's life, reveals a misunderstanding of how those circumstances were actually created. And for the focus placed on them during the struggle, it actually serves to keep things from changing.

Acceptance, on the other hand, reveals an understanding that today's circumstances arose from yesterday's focus, encouraging introspection and fueling new thought, actually serving to hasten change.

Yeah, sounds like an SAT question.

Score,
The Universe"

It takes a whole lot of negative thoughts to create a negative outcome. However, when your brain manages around 60,000 thoughts daily, it is hard to really count the nature of your thoughts, either it being positive or negative. It will consume every ounce of energy you possess if you try. Now, instead of focusing on how many thoughts enter your mind, change your focus towards the nature of what you allow entering your subconscious mind. You want to change your focus, and the rest will follow. It is important to always look for new opportunities and if yesterday was miserable, today will change. Keeping these negative feelings can only damage your soul and wouldn't allow you to work on yourself and progress. Every day is a new chapter written in your book of life, and you are the author. Avoid letting negativity enter your mind day after day and allow it to drain your energy. You can't expect changes when you allow these feelings to happen. Fighting against an opponent (life) that is stronger than anyone you can ever imagine is a battle you will lose miserably. You can, however, fight life intelligently. It's not about how hard your hit back, it's about how much you can take from this fight and keep on moving forward. Life is looking to battle weak minded people, that will lay down after the first punch. Stand up and look at life straight in the eyes and say: "I didn't hear any bells. The fight ain't over yet". I agree that it will hurt, and it will be painful and life will keep on hitting. Life is NOT easy, so if things do not work out the way you want, it is NOT anyone's fault except yours. However, life do not feel it's worth the time to keep on hitting on someone who keeps on getting up after every punch. Show what you are made off and the rest of your life will unravel in front of you. Just know that others are dealing with way more difficult challenges than you do.

Despite these challenges you face today or will face tomorrow, you need to learn how to accept certain circumstances that will occur in your life, regardless of how much you tried to avoid them. There is no IF or BUT about it. It is a part of your destiny and it is already written in your book of life. Even though you are the author, some Epilogue have been written by G-d and this is what you will have to face. So instead of arguing about the outcome, start to think about ways to alleviate the magnitude of the ordeal so you can get out of it unscathed. I am not saying that it will be a walk in the park, but it will hurt all through the process. But again, once this phase is completed, start picking up the broken pieces and trash them. Remember that the pain you are experiencing is ONLY temporary, and it will subside after time. Quitting never really subsides as it becomes a part of you and your personality. Quitters never achieve anything, and they blame the whole world about their misfortune. They forget to blame the ONLY person that allowed the quitting to happen: THEMSELVES. If you have a dream, whatever it is, you need to protect it and cultivate it. If you want something, go out there and get it and don't wait for anyone's permission. When you go for your dream, do not be afraid to fail. You can't always win every war, but allowing yourself to learn from these failures is what can make you a better and wiser person. It will never be just about taking action, but also believing that good things will happen in your life and live like it already happen. Looking to be rich? Feel like you already achieve wealth and start looking at new homes and whatever else you desire. Everything starts with thoughts, then belief and finally, ACTION. So what are YOU going to do today?

10 Things That Will Keep You From Giving Up

We have all been there. That moment when we have tried everything we know to do and still do not feel we have achieved what we set out to do. We have fought the fight and have come against the odds but still we have not reached the goal. The only thing we have left to do is the hardest of all... to quit.

For most success-minded people, the idea of quitting is against all they hold dear, however, that does not stop it from entering our thinking from time to time. I am not talking about those who at the first sign of difficulty through up their arms and just give up. The world is full of people who see quitting as their first option and follow that option often.

You are not a quitter. You see quitting as not an option at all. You believe and quote the words of the great coach, Vince Lombardi, who told us: "Winners never quit and quitters never win." Still, in the secret inner chambers of your heart, there are times when the idea of just giving up and moving on is very enticing.

So what do we need to do to keep the demon of defeat away from our door? What are the keys to staying strong and seeing our goals to completion, no matter how long that takes? I have listed 10 simple and basic things you can do to keep defeat at bay and to achieve the success you see in life.

First, I want to share with you a quote from Winston Churchill's famous 1941 speech to his former boy's school. Many of you have read or heard this quote hundreds of times, however, I want you to write it down and carry it with you. This is a great tool to encourage you and help you stand strong in times of doubt and discouragement. It is also the simple truth of success. This thinking took England to victory over some of the darkest days known to mankind, it can get you to your goal as well.

"Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." - Winston Churchill

1. Know What You Want
Would you head off for vacation and not have a destination in mind. I know that many people dream of just heading out and seeing where they may end up, however, you usually end up where you do not wish to be. Those who are successful know where they are going and why they are going there. In short, they know what they want from life. This knowledge is called having goals.

Radio and TV personality and success expert, Earl Nightingale (1921-1989) said, "People with goals succeed because they know where they're going." It is a fact that if you know what you want from life you are likely to achieve it. Those who do not know what they want are wondering aimlessly and never finding what they are looking for.

2. Clear Written Goals
Once you know what it is in life you desire, you need to write it down in clear detail. Those who think they will just remember it do not achieve their goals because they change every day. Your mind is always working. It is never stagnant, therefore it is always changing. Trying to remember a definite goal is almost impossible.

Think of it this way. You are going on that trip. You have a map and you know the city you are going to, however, each time you look at the map, the dot for the city changes its place on the map. Will you ever get to where you are going? Not likely. The same is true for your goals. By writing them down you create a map which you can look at and find it the same every time you need to use it.

3. Belief in Your Mission
Belief is a powerful thing. When we believe in what we are doing and see it as an important mission to achieve, we find the strength and courage needed to do what must be done. One of the ways that Winston Churchill encouraged the English people to fight on during those dark days of the war was to always remind them what they were fighting for. It was for England, their home and country. It was to stop the approaching evil and stand for all that was right, good and free.

Belief gives us the why to what we are doing. When you have a strong enough why, the how will always come. Too many give up because they first look for a "how" to succeed rather than a "why" to succeed. When we believe in what we are doing, we will always find a way to overcome any difficulty that comes our way. English philosopher, John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) said: "One person with a belief is equal to ninety-nine who have only interests."

4. Belief in Yourself
Along with believing in your mission, you must also believe in yourself. It is one thing to know what needs to be done, and another to believe that you can do it. I have always found strength in time of struggle by repeating to myself this fact: If God created me with a purpose to complete, then He has all intentions for me to complete it. If the Creator of the universe is behind you, how can you fail?

Do not get the belief in yourself confused with conceit. Believing that you can achieve your goals is not believing that you are better than others, only that you can do what you were created to do. Believing in yourself is where we find strength to go that bit farther down the road to achievement. Nineteenth century activist and writer, Lydia M. Child (1802-1880) put it this way, "Belief in oneself is one of the most important bricks in building any successful venture."

5. Passion
Passion is a fire that burns deep in the soul of the one who has a dream. Success-minded people know what their passion to achieve their dreams is the energy that keeps them going when everything seems to tell them to stop. It is that burning desire that fuels the achiever to try just one more thing, take one more step and never to give up.

Like all fires however, passion must be fed. This is where having that written goal comes in. Each time it is read it fuels the fires of your passion and helps you to move on. Know that this is not just a wish for success. Wishes are made of smoke and you cannot hold on to them. This is your dream. It is solid, it is real and it is yours.

6. Sense of Adventure
Real success-minded people know that every difficulty, every road block, every challenge is not something to avoid but a new adventure to be embraced. American author, William Feathers (1889-1981) said, "One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure." Adventure gives us purpose. It makes the challenges of life exciting. It makes the journey to achievement fun.

The time when we want to give up and quit is the time we feel discouraged, tired and worn-out. When we develop a sense of adventure we start to see those times are something to overcome, not give into. We find the energy to press on and move toward the next great adventure life holds for us.

7. Helping Others
One of the most positive and successful people I have known in my lifetime has been the great author and speaker, Zig Ziglar. I do not believe that any person has inspired me more than Zig to keep going, even when I really, really, really did not want to. What was the key to Zig Ziglar's success and that he passed on to everyone who desires to achieve success? Simple: Help other people.

"You can have anything in life you want," Zig used to say, "as long as you help enough people get what they want." This is one of my favorite quotes of all time. That is because it is 100% true. I have written it down so I can read it often and never forget that success comes from helping others to succeed. By helping others to be their best, you in turn become your best. When it comes to helping others, there is no down side.

8. Purposeful Action
Here is a truth that I want you to write out and attach to your bathroom mirror so you see it every day. Learn it, believe it and never forget it for a moment. It is the foundation to all success in every area of your life. Without it you will never achieve your dreams and with it you will never fail. Ready? Here it is: NOTHING HAPPENS WITHOUT ACTION!

No matter what you want to achieve in life, nothing will be achieved without taking action. You can always do something that you did not do before. It does not matter what you know, who you know or when you know it. Knowledge by itself is incomplete. As the great motivator, Tony Robbins said, "You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action."

9. Determination
The way to avoid giving up is to never stop. There is always one more thing you can try. There is always one more turn in the road. Remember the words of the great inventor, Thomas A. Edison (1847-1931) who said, "Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." And Edison knew about trying and failing. Most men would have never moved beyond the many failures that Edison did. But then, we would not have most of the wonderful conveniences we have today without those who were determined to find the answers they sought.

Here is the key to the success of Edison and those many men and women like him who tried and failed over and over again. The key is they never see failure as failure. Just because something did not work does not mean it is a failure. You just discovered something you weren't looking for. As Edison said, "Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless."

10. Success
Success is a two-edged sword. There is little in this world as satisfying as success. To know that your hard work and determination paid off and you have won the prize is a great feeling. It is encouraging and exhilarating. However, it can also be the first step to your biggest failure. Few have seen success to the degree that Microsoft founder Bill Gates has. Gates makes this observation about success: "Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose."

Far too many people achieve success in an area of life and then quit. They think that their success will be enough or it will linger in their life. The truth is, success melts like ice cream in the hot sun. It is there and it is wonderful, but if you stop and hold it in your hand you will end up with only a messy hand. The best way to celebrate success of a goal is to immediately set a new goal. Once you have done that, go back to step one and start the adventure all over again.

3 Ways to Keep Moving Through Hell

Many times, when we start to chase after our goals and desires, we inevitably face challenges in the form of rejection and failure. For example, in your quest to find a job, that special someone, or a dream, you might find yourself failing many, many times.
When all you have faced so far is failure along your journey, and all you have seen is an unending stream of disappointments, it is very easy to expect failure at your next try. As a result, you may even stop trying altogether, throwing up your hands in despair and quitting.
As Viktor Frankl said, despair is suffering without meaning. Give meaning to your suffering and remove despair from the equation.

Challenges Are Just Opportunities

You will constantly encounter barriers and challenges along your journey. Rather than fret and stress over each challenge, treat them as opportunities for learning something new. That way, when you don’t get what you wanted, it will feel less like rejection and failure. Every opportunity is a chance to improve upon yourself and increase your chances of success the next go-around.
Astute readers will notice that I just suggested reframing the situation to be positive. For example, instead of looking at the next challenge as a cruel joke from Fate, reframe the situation to say that it is a chance for you to work on freeing yourself of the victim mentality. After all, you are ultimately responsible for the situation, even if it is seemingly out of your hands. It’s always easier to blame the situation or person for your current stake in life. Instead of rallying against what is impossible or unfair, focus your time and energy on what you can change. You will find that you start to see things free of your ego, objectively instead of subjectively in the third-person, that you are more able to dispassionately judge the situation and make decisions on what could be wrong so as to provide a solution.
Now, that’s what I call turning a negative into a positive!

Take a Break

You really can try too hard sometimes and end up embittered and sore from the whole experience, especially after weeks and months of constantly racking up losses with little, if any, wins to show for it. It’s time to get away from it all for a little while. Take a mini vacation out of town for the weekend and forget about your problems. Treat yourself to something nice, like a gourmet meal or a massage. Buy yourself that toy or outfit you’ve been eying for months.
In other words, relax your body and your mind! If you have been pondering about a situation, the answers will often come when you least expect them. If you have been trying to get a job or find a significant other, it’s time to release that stress, desperation, bitterness, and anger that may have gripped you, subconsciously leaking out during your interviews and interactions.
Preventative care is often the best medicine. After all, you only have so much willpower in reserve. You only can take so much rejection and failure before it breaks you. The trick then is to find your own breaking point and stop before you ever reach it. It takes time and experience to recognize the signs. When you start to see the signs, it’s time to step back, take a break, and relax a little bit.

Be Outcome Independent

Part of chasing after your dreams and going after what you want is to accept that failure is a part of the equation. Failure is just another way for you to learn and provides many of life’s valuable lessons. While it does often hurt, we come out of it stronger and better for it. The thin line that separates those who find success from those who do not are how they view and recover from failures.
Wayne Gretskey famously noted that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. So, take a chance! Tell yourself that there is no certainty, only opportunity. Think of it this way: Every accomplishment in your life began with a decision to try.
A successful person has oftentimes failed much more than the person who gives up easily. That person learns that failure is part of the road to success and learns how to learn from those rejections and those failures. He or she also rebounds faster from the latest setbacks and keeps moving onto the next attempt.

In Closing

The next time you are feeling down and out, remind yourself that you deserve what you are chasing. You are worthy of living your dreams and having a fulfilled life. You have to first believe with overwhelming faith that it will be (rather than likely or possible, believe that it will happen!) before you can start to manifest it. Kindly remind yourself that challenges are just opportunities, to take a break, and finally to be outcome independent.

Thinking About Giving Up? Read This First

We all become discouraged. Before you throw in the towel on something you've been working toward, remember that every difficulty is an opportunity in disguise.

What do J.K. Rowling, Walt Disney, Albert Einstein, Vincent van Gogh, Thomas Edison, and Dr. Seuss have in common? They all failed miserably before they became successful.
Edison once said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. I am not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward."
Dr. Seuss's first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected by different publishers 27 times.
Einstein didn't speak until he was 4 and didn't read until he was 7, after which he went on to win the Nobel Prize and become the face of modern physics.
Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime, and that was to a friend. Even so, he kept painting and finished more than 800 pieces. His most expensive painting today is valued at $142.7 million.
J. K. Rowling was famously rejected by 12 publishers before Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was accepted.
Walt Disney, according to legend, was turned down 302 times before he got financing for creating Disneyland.
So before you think of quitting, think again:

1. Think of the why.

Remember why you started in the first place. What did you want to achieve? What did you want to accomplish?

2. Don't do what is easy.

Anything great is worth fighting for.

3. Remember it's not over till it's over.

Some people fold after making one timid request. Don't be that person. Do all you can to succeed, even when the odds are against you. Even if it's late in the final inning, you can still win it--unless you quit.

4. Mind your attitude.

Negative thoughts create negative results. Do what you can to turn it around and replace negativity with positive thoughts.

5. Take responsibility.

You can't always control the results. But you own your efforts, your ideas, and your perseverance against obstacles.

6. Keep learning.

Everyone makes mistakes and goes through rough patches. But if you learn from the things that go wrong you can redeem your failures. It's not about avoiding adversity, but knowing how to handle it.

7. Believe in second (and third and fourth and fifth) chances.

Just because you didn't get it right the first time, that doesn't mean you won't get it right the second.
One of our principal missions in life is to figure out what we really want and go after it with a vengeance. So before you quit everything or give up on anything remember that, while you can never go back and start a new beginning, you can always start now and make a new ending.

How You Can Tell That It's the Right Time to Quit

Sticking with the wrong goal could lead to a dead end.

"No problem is so formidable that you cannot walk away from it," said Peanuts creator Charles Schulz. Quitting is usually perceived to be negative, whereas perseverance is seen as admirable and even essential for success in life. Surprisingly, though, when perseverance is taken too far, it becomes self-destructive. Research shows that people who let go of unattainable goals experience higher well-being. So why is it so hard to surrender?
Here is the one thing to consider in order to celebrate "failure": We may be biased against quitting because we are trapped in the "sunk cost fallacy."
Sunk costs are those costs that are beyond recovery the moment a decision is made. They represent the time and effort already spent on a project. For example, consider membership in a warehouse club like Sam’s Club that costs $40 per year. To “recoup” the membership fee, members often overspend on frivolous things, such as five-pound barrels of pretzels.
Everyone experiences the influence of sunk costs in some form or another, whether through the investment of time or money in projects or doomed relationships. It is hard to let go. And while we know it's common, the sunk cost fallacy may also be more dangerous than we realize.
Holding on to a current subpar opportunity hinders the potential for one's future. To help you let go of sunk-cost thinking, economists recommend instead considering opportunity cost. Whereas a sunk cost is about the past, opportunity cost is about the future.
In a world of finite resources, every dollar you spend on one thing is not spent elsewhere. Held back by yesterday's projects, you cannot solve future problems. Letting go, then, and ending the continued investment of time, money, or energy in one direction offers us practical and mental freedom to advance in another, more promising area.
Those who quit dead-end projects or relationships are mentally healthier than those who stay entrapped, as people trapped by dead-end goals may begin to experience negative affects like anxiety and diminished well-being.
When we are overly focused on a particular goal or outcome, we become rigid and inflexible. This narrows our options and makes us feel more limited. Use your time and resources more effectively: Do not be afraid to give up frustrating goals. New opportunities will be just around the corner.
