The Awakened Life - Spiritual Development Struggles (By Danielle R. Gault)

Woman Meditating in the Outdoors

As a life coach, I often get questions from participants who have gone through my course. Some of these questions lend themselves to a great article. Here are some questions from a previous participant who is struggling with his spiritual development processes.

HOW TO FIND TIME TO MEDITATE IN A BUSY LIFE

He asked about meditating and in his busy life, finding time for this practice can be a challenge. We know that meditating has great stress-related relief benefits that help the mind-body cope with a demanding and often chaotic world. I've gone through many phases with the practice of meditation and have come to the conclusion that even if you sit at your desk and close your eyes for a couple of minutes, you are communing with God - higher power, energy, the field of all possibility - whatever you want to call it and even for a couple of minutes, this can be helpful to your inner world.

Our spiritual teacher, Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati (Ramamurti S. Mishra, M.D). used to say that when you pray, you're talking to God and when you meditate (are silent) God is talking to you. I use to be very strict with my meditating practice but am no longer as I see it as a tool that is there to serve me and not the other way around. Even in your everyday working life, if you are present, you're meditating; there are many forms of meditating not just the 'sitting' form my teacher use to say. Mindfulness is truly a great meditation.

Just close your eyes and take a few deep breaths in and out and tap into that all-encompassing energy that is always there around us and makes no demands on us - just remember its presence and it will feed your spirit - that is its job. You don't have to work at it or make it a ritual or even a practice if you want to - just close the eyes and be silent.

AGES, STAGES, PHASES IN LIFE

In my life coaching teaching, I say that there are different ages, stages, and phases in our life. Each of these stages calls upon different aspects of ourselves.

The first stage is mainly taking in content. You stay there until you get sick and tired of taking in other people's ideas. At this point, you move into the second stage. At the second stage you are taking in AND putting out. Then the third stage is doing as you like.

At the second stage, you have to pay attention to the phases in this stage because you can get burned out by putting out too much. At this point, you start negotiating with life - so much taking in and so much putting out - how to negotiate with it and maintain some balance within? That is the challenge we all face.

I'm at the third stage: you take in and give out for your own pleasure, amusement and to keep entertained. At this developmental stage, generally later in life, one hopes that the 'self' feels satisfied with what has been accomplished but still likes to stay alert and aware by challenging yourself and your ideas from time to time and by revising your spiritual interests.

To be open for what life has to teach us at every stage we go through and at all the phases in these stages and no matter what our age is, we have to determine where the in-and-out is out of balance - that is natural as life is dynamic and not static. No matter what stage, phase, or age we're in, we need to set some boundaries or some kind of formula for ourselves.

AS THE PENDULUM SWINGS

How much do I give out this week, this month, and this year and how much do I take in and how much do I rest. Negotiate with yourself. That is what I do with myself. Think in terms of yoga poses - stretch and create tension in the muscle group. Pause. Then rest. Repeat: create tension, pause, rest, tension, pause, rest. In the resting state, we repair the nervous system which makes it stronger to cope with more stress and tension in our life. Rest is important to maintain a good balance. Such is the nature of life - it is like a pendulum and swings in one direction and then the other looking for the balance or optimal homeostasis but it is always moving or should be. If it is not moving, it is like the body/mind becomes lethargic and dull and rusts out - heading toward death and dying. If it is always moving, too much, too fast, and too often, then it burns out and we snap and burn out.

We need to find the right balance for ourselves at all ages, stages and phases of our life. It is a perpetual challenge.

This year started with a bang and I felt so jam-packed and full of too many details, demands, and pressures along with my husband's medical issues. I look back at it and wonder how I coped.

So when September arrived and we came down to our seasonal cottage, my daughter asked me what will I do and I said NOTHING. Boy this was a challenge for me as I am a 'doing' machine but it is something I can learn to do or remember how to do; I just have to watch the mind and its judgment about doing 'nothing' because after my first husband, David, died, I defined myself by 'doing'.

Life is always a great teacher and we are always learning something about ourselves. The Awakened Life - it can be tiring but would we want it any other way?

FIND SOME FORMULA

An example of a formula - when we were in India in the late 80's we saw a lot of poverty and we struggled with giving money or not giving money until Bill said we'll put so many rupees in our pocket each day and when they are gone, they are gone. We decided to give money when someone triggered an awareness in us - that was our condition - a smile, a door open, a blessing - then we gave until the money was gone and then we didn't feel guilty about not giving any more - we used our formula and we felt good about what we did and didn't feel guilty about the rest of the day - tomorrow was another day and we'd start over. So set up some formula for yourself with taking in and giving out.

When asked by a participant in the life coach training, "with so many opportunities for healing, growth, and personal development, how do you chose or know which ones to do?" My response to this question was, "The way you know which ones to do is by doing them. The ones you do are the ones you want to do and the ones you don't do, you just don't get around to doing them or you do them sporadically. Pay attention to what you are doing. Ask yourself why you are doing those things that you do regularly.

I like to exercise so I am pretty good about working out. I meditate 'sometimes' because I am not as charmed by the practice as I use to be but I feel that I 'should' meditate. The motivators for exercise and meditation are very different at this stage in my life but it helps to know and understand the 'why' of what we do.

Then I was asked, "How do you suggest narrowing down activities to not just keep learning, but to live a life more aligned with my values/vision? I'm noticing I also get derailed trying to please others requests, and put those before myself." And I replied, "What are your values/vision - understand the underlying principles out of which you operate - what are they?"

If you find that you spend too much time pleasing others, ask yourself what you get out of it. If this brings you personal satisfaction but you're concerned about time management or personal achievement, and then monitor it.

As for getting derailed, a principle you can set up for yourself is to allow yourself some of that (pleasing others) and just know that that is what you do - cut it off when it becomes too much.

SELF CARE IS A PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Self care dictates that we are responsible for what we take in and what we put out - there is no one out there who manages us - we are self-managers and self-regulators - when the pendulum goes too far in one direction, turn around and go in the opposite direction - look for the optimum amount of give and take that works for you.

Make that a principle - a formula - then let that be OK. If it is not OK, then keep investigating and learning. What else can we do? We don't want to live someone else's principles or formula or way of life - that is not awakened but robotic.

When your body or mind sends you a message that you feel burnt out then you know that the pendulum has swung too far to one side and that is not in harmony with your balanced self - so swing it back. And so it goes in life - we are always negotiating and striving to maintain balance and homeostasis and that process keeps us alive and active and engaged. Isn't life wonderful that way?

We can only learn more about what works for us and what does not work for us and to be a curious observer of the process is enlightenment - fascinating stuff.

When, Bill, my husband got his cancer diagnosis, I had to 'look' at myself and all the wonderful things I have said over the years about being strong and coping with life and I was challenged to see how I would 'adjust' to this new thing in our life that impacted it in ways that I still don't know so I wondered how I would show up.

5 Habits to Develop NOW to Be Wildly Successful In Life (By Stephanie O'Brien)

Andrea wrote me a question about my daily routines, disciplines and habits that I have in place that has led me to the successful life I have today. I LOVED the question. And today, I want to share with you my top 5 Habits to Develop Right NOW to experience a wildly successful life.

Habit 1: Value the Health of Your Soul: Make Spiritual Development your highest priority. All 7 areas of life (personal development, health, family, career, financial, social, and spiritual) are important. But, I strongly believe that the health of your soul (mind, will, and emotions) dictate the decisions you make and the person you show up to the world as.

Here what I told Andrea about my specific daily routines:

I am a person of faith that values spiritual disciplines so I would say my number ONE daily practice is to spend time in life giving content and time tested wisdom. For me, one of those sources is the Bible- specifically the book of Proverbs (a chapter a day). I also pray daily. So my spiritual health is my number one priority.

Habit 2: Become a DAILY, Life Long Learner: Entrepreneurs tend to have an insatiable appetite for learning. You don't have to be an entrepreneur to love learning, but you find it consistently among successful business leaders, ministers, and entrepreneurs.

I suggest a MINIMUM of an hour a day in learning. This falls under the personal development category in the wheel of life (in the show notes).

To expound on my personal daily learning routine, I told Andrea, I learn 2-3 hours a day. I know that sounds like a ton but its totally possible. I absorb myself in podcasts and audio books which allows me to learn while I cook, fold the laundry, work out, get ready in the morning, and drive or any other mindless task that we find ourselves doing.

Habit 3: Show Up To Serve: You've heard it before, "it's' more blessed to give than to get." Now, you need to be careful that your motive for giving is pure. You should never give out of obligation, with the intent to manipulate and hold it over someone's head, or even to make people like you. You should give out of a joyful and cheerful state of heart- just because you want to. I'm not speaking only on financial giving. I'm speaking on all forms of generosity- a favor, gift, referral, writing a testimonial, giving an encouraging word, etc are all forms of giving and serving.

Here's what I wrote to Andrea: Show up to serve. It was a total game changer for me when I first sought to serve others rather than to have others serve me. When you show up to help others get what they want, you get your socks blessed off. Helping someone succeed when you want the same thing helps you more than it helps them.

Habit 4: Watch the Company You Keep: Be careful with who you allow to be in your circle of influence. Jim Rohn has said "we become the average of the 5 people we hang around most." I have found that to be very true.

Now, this is not to say that you need to cut everyone out of your life who is not supportive and encouraging of you. If you focus on your goals and are faithful in actively and diligently pursuing your dream, you will gain more friends and the other people who don't want to come along with you will stay behind. It happens organically.

Habit 5: Get Accountability: Your strongest circle of influence should love you enough to call you out when you need it. To encourage means "to call out courage" as well as "to put courage in you". We all have blind spots. And I'm so grateful for the people in my life that can see things that hurt or hinder my success that I would not know about, if they never called it out. Find people who are safe, and kind- yet, bold and honest with you.

Those are my top 5 life habits I strongly suggest you develop today, to be wildly successful.

Is Life Really Defined By Uncertainty?

Life to me is defined by uncertainty. That's one reason I favor a cautious approach. Fear comes from uncertainty. There are always two sides to any coin. This forms a crucial element of doubt and uncertainty. It was once said- You cannot be certain about uncertainty. To define it any other way, would be quite difficult.

The only thing that's certain is uncertainty. Change creates new tensions and uncertainties in our lives. There are so many events over which we have no control. Can you let go of control? It demands a high level of spiritual fitness. You seek to find the highest level of your spiritual development. This is your enlightenment. As you grow and learn, new ascendancies offer greater rewards.

All you can do is exhale. Breathe deeply. Relentlessly ride on through the cycles of your life. Look for the interconnectivity in all things. You are a part of the network. We are not programmed to embrace uncertainty and fear. It goes against our nature. It triggers our fight or flight instincts. Carefully examine the situation. Put a light into the dark places. In the end, it is all quite simple. You will find your worries are baseless or understandable. All it takes is time and clarity.

People vary in their desire to minimize uncertainty. Those who react by a worrying focus on potential threats and risks. When our bodily reaction is a strong one, we tend to recognize and label it as anxiety, but when it's more subtle, we often fail to see it despite its effect.

We know this from psychological research in thinking styles and perfectionism. Decide whether an issue is important. If it's causing anxiety, do a short meditation. Recognise thought errors that try to pull you into worry. Once we recognize this human tendency, we can learn to challenge or even ignore our worries.

Allow yourself to have negative feelings; they are normal after all. Sitting with uncertainty requires patience. Allow yourself to reflect on what this means to you. Uncertainty is a part of life and it can't be avoided.

The only constant in life is that it will involve change, and try as you may control the future, sometimes all you can do is trust that whatever happens, you can adapt and make the best of it. Replace expectations with plans. When you form expectations, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

Prepare for different possibilities. Become a feeling observer. Get confident about your coping and adapting skills. This isn't the same as "expect the worst." It's more about assuring yourself that you can handle any difficulty that might come.

This has actually shown to help people manage anxiety.

Finding the solution of the uncertainties in life is like thrashing around to try to get the mud to go away. All this does is stir up more mud. Seek out healthy stress reducers in order to make uncertainty sends us back into the fight of flight mode.

Stop Being Afraid by Changing Your Mental Game: Take Back Your Power Instead

I got some news today that made my belly hurt. It does not matter what it is, only that it was enough to evoke the terrible fear monster inside of me.

Once again, the beast of failures past groped its way up from the basement of my mind. All of the old mantras began to sound off like ominous bells of doom. "You are not good enough."

"You are not smart enough, powerful enough, fill-in-the blank enough," the voices in my head cried. Then it hit me. I asked for this.

Wait.

What? I asked to be kicked in the shins, pushed down in the playground and have my spiritual lunch money taken? I wanted an emotional wedgie?!

Yeppers.

You see, I have this nasty habit of asking to grow, to learn to explore and to become more than I am. You may have done that too.

If so, don't be surprised if the universe answers by sending a few curve balls your way. Road blocks are kind of the pop quizzes of spiritual development. (Dang it!)

When we get bowled over, it is life's way of letting us actually live what we all say we believe. Without these crisis moments to challenge us, we would never be able to learn the lesson, fight our inner demons or... well, grow.

The days that you wake up feeling like a truck hit you, when someone you love hurts you, when you have no money (and for some reason the electric company just won't accept your written-in-crayon I.O.U), when doom and gloom are playing a game of keep away with your inner peace, these days are your training days.

This is how you become an overcomer.

You are the hero of your own story and now, even as your knees go week and you want to just cry, if you can stand up, even for a minute, it will be okay.

You will get through this and if you are willing to trust and move forward, your victory is assured, not matter what the outcome.

It is oh so easy to smile, look wiser than we are and be happy when the road is easy and the sun is shining. But add a few clouds, a crooked cold wind that cuts you to the bone, or a dark night of the soul and it is easy to lose your way. When you skin your metaphysical knees it gets real in a hurry.

Just remember: those days are true gifts. You read that right. They may not be packaged with fun colors and puppy kisses, but ribbons aside, it is all a gift nonetheless.

Problems are just the mile markers of your change in trajectory. They are there to shake up your convictions and demand more of you. Every hard day is a chance to be brave, to face our fears, swallow hard and move forward in the darkness.

Yes.

Life can be scary. You really do have the power to do incredible things though. Half the battle is knowing that this, all of it, is a test. Give thanks for the gloomy days, the difficult moments and know that you are a rock star.

Here is a way to take back your power:

First, remember that life/time is to paraphrase Einstein, a very persistent illusion. Oh it feels real enough, but beneath all of it, everything and everyone is just connected strands of energy.

Secondly, allow yourself to feel, to grieve to get mad or whatever. It is okay to have emotions. Acknowledge your pain. Analyze it. And then release it. ( In a safe way.)

Now begin to bring in love. Send love to yourself. Send love to the situation or person that is causing you pain. Send forgiveness. (As much as you can. Just being willing is a start.) Remember, forgiveness does not excuse or cover over harm, it merely unhitches your emotional train engine from that nasty cargo you were hauling around.

See if you can recognize a pattern of these types of situations in your life. If so, then perhaps these events are lessons you need to learn. They will continue to appear, no matter where you are. Only the faces and locations will change. The underlying message will morph, but keep coming back until you grow past your need for it.

Lastly, give thanks for whatever just ate your lunch. After all, this made you stronger, wiser and more in tune with the greater Divine Source. Give thanks and breathe.
Rinse and repeat as needed. To rephrase an old proverb: once you have learned the painful lesson, the need for the terrible teacher will fade away and new (better, more joyous) lessons will have room to come in.

Here's How To Get The Most Out Of Your Affirmations

"Ask for what you want and be prepared to get it!" -Maya Angelou
Often when we reach for affirmations as a form of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual development, we read the words and then mindlessly do the suggested exercises without really connecting to our inner experience.
Affirmations have the power to completely transform our lives. The problem for many of us however, is that we wander around in our busy minds randomly repeating these affirmations with no real connection or feeling.
As humans, we crave experience and if we don't learn how to affirm what we want to feel then it's nothing more that a meaningless sentence.
An affirmation is a positive statement of how we envision our best self. It can be repeated in the mind and written down.
In over 10 years of being a positive development junkie, affirmations seem to be the one thing I never really found any benefit in doing, until mindfulness became the number one thing in my life. I would meander throughout my day saying things like, "Every day in every way I am getting better," etc.
That's all fine but what the f*ck does better really mean to me? Absolutely nothing.
The real power of affirmations became clear when I learned how to use them in the present moment and with feeling.
First, I will explain a few ways how NOT to do affirmations:
1. Don't affirm something that your soul isn't interested in.
You may think you want to affirm more money, a sexy partner or a shiny new car. These things are all great, but your soul is actually asking for you to stop and experience positive feelings such as peace, happiness, joy or clarity. All the funky external 'stuff' is a bi-product of experiencing positive feelings.
2. Don't take on someone else's affirmation.
Your soul has its own journey to experience, so taking someone else's affirmation won't truly resonate with the true essence of your authenticity.
3. Don't make affirmations too wordy.
Seriously, life is busy enough without having long winded affirmations. Keep it short and sweet.
4. Don't wander around mindlessly repeating your chosen affirmation.
It's like going to the gym for the mind. Stop and say them with purpose and presence. Add feeling to them and work that mind muscle baby!
And here are six easy steps to doing your affirmation correctly:
  1. Stop and get present.
  2. Connect with your breath.
  3. On your in breath affirm: "I AM."
  4. On your exhale say what you would like to experience "__________". I use 'peace' but it's important that you use the word that resonates with you.
  5. Take a few seconds to stay mindful. Have a heightened awareness of the present moment and let the affirmation sink into your consciousness before you repeat your affirmation.
  6. Make them a daily habit and let it happen organically.
Try changing your approach to affirmations with these tips and see what difference you can feel in your connection with them.
