How To Survive Rush Hour Traffic Like A Pro

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, but alas, you can barely hear them over the blasting of horns and the cussing of furious drivers. Ahh, nothing like the fuss of Monday rush hour traffic to kick start your week - as if your job isn't aggravating enough. Now, you'll arrive in the office late, drenched in sweat, and sporting a sour scowl across your face.

Although rush hour traffic is practically inevitable, it can be avoided or better yet - enjoyed. Here is a short guide to help you start your week right and survive stressful traffic congestions.

1. Prevention is cure

Or in this case, avoidance. Changing your work schedule at a less hectic time can allow you to cut your commute time. Not only that, this strategy will also let you save up on gas as well. Unfortunately, not all jobs are as flexible as we'd want it to be, so if you are one of those who has a strict 8 AM to 5 PM job, you can always leave early and give yourself additional time to get to work. This will make your journey more pleasant and relaxing.

2. Try different routes

Seeing the same view every morning can suck the life out of you, especially when you are helplessly stuck in it. Spice up your daily commute by varying your route and transportation mode, by doing this, you'll benefit from the regular change of scenery and find a faster route at the same time.

3. Phone battery is crucial

Whether you are expecting heavy traffic or not, a charged phone will always be your best friend. Being stuck in traffic with a critically low battery will only add to your distress. Just think of all the emails, text messages, and emergency calls you won't be able to answer. Aside from unnecessary anxiety, a charged phone can also help you find alternative routes and fetch useful traffic updates.

4. Listen to your favorite songs or read books

Unless you have a separate gadget for music or a handy book, this serves as another reason why tip #3 is crucial. If you are stuck in heavy traffic, you might as well forget your worries and enjoy it. Listen to your favorite songs, doze off to classic music, or distract yourself with audio books. If you have extra time to arrive at your workplace, then grab this opportunity to get some extra shut-eye or catch up on your favorite series.

5. Plaster a smile across your face

Heavy traffic basically equates to annoyance and sometimes even full-blown road rage. Avoid unneeded drama by putting on a happy face. Don't expect to wipe out all negative feeling, but assume a better perspective of things and situations. When someone cuts you off the road, accept, let it go, and move on instead of bringing that storminess all the way to your workplace. A study finds that faking a smile or simply going through the process of smiling can decrease stress levels and trick your brain into thinking that you are actually happy.

These tips are solely precautions that you don't even have to acknowledge if you are prepared. Time is crucial especially in fast paced industries like sales and real estate, so you must keep in mind that prevention is always key to a stress-free morning commute. We hope you good luck on your transformation from being a night owl to an early bird. It's better to be safe than sorry!

Message From the Universe: Appreciate Life a Bit More!

Rear View of Woman With Arms Raised at Beach during Sunset

"Now! Go! Stake your claim! Hold out your hands. Move, get ready, give thanks. Imagine, and let go. Act, and have faith. Persist. Do what you can, when you can, all you can. Because never again, not in a million years, not over ten thousand lifetimes, will you ever again be as close as you are today.

Ungawwa,
The Universe"

This message is running up my spine as I am reading it and writing the interpretation. For everyone experiencing different challenges, this message can mean different thing. It is great because it covers such a wide area of possible concerns that many might experience daily, but yet, isn't specific when providing answers. The message is universal because it can apply to everything. The common denominator is appreciation and gratitude and belief. If you have all three, you can accomplish anything and reach all your goals and dreams. I agree that a bit of luck is needed to make it all happen quicker, but overall, with persistence and strong determination to succeed, you will accomplish everything you put your mind into. The key is to NEVER stop. It can be hard as you have no clue if what you are doing today will bring you anywhere, but just pay attention to the signs/signals, your environment, opportunities, and look for what is abnormal in your daily routine. If you find something being redundant, or boring for you, start looking for a change. Determine the best course of action and just take it. Do not hesitate as you will start questioning your every move, on every day. I am not saying to jump on anything without really thinking about it, but after looking at all the option, just take that leap, jump and let the rest unravel in front of you. No one ever succeeded in life without taking risks, putting everything down and going for whatever outcome. You need to understand that we all have some kind of mission, and despite all the challenges we face, we need to still search for our mission, and do whatever it takes to accomplish it. The rest is in the hand of God and his/her decision. This is ONE other thing you can't really control.

When you are having positive thoughts, let them run through your head, desire them to happen and always be grateful for what you already have. It is a very important components to making your thoughts a reality. You need to let the Universe know that you are OK even if your thoughts didn't come true. Learn to be happy with what was already handed to you and it is OK to aim for something better, but do it for the right reasons. Looking to be wealthier? Aren't we all? Well, work on a plan that will make this happen but also accept the way things are today. Are you starving? Are you on the streets? Are you out of a job? If you are reading this article, I can assume that it is none of the above. When reading this article, that means you have a computer with internet connection, or a laptop or whatever else, which mean you probably have a job to afford these items. Appreciate all of what you have and always look to change yourself first, before changing your overall situation. You might ask: "What's the difference between both?" Changing who you are is internal, but changing your situation is external. So focus on the internal first, such as your attitude, your approach to life, your personality, your anger problem, your self esteem issue if you have any. The external is your financial status, relationship or career which is definitely much less of a hassle to change. Start looking to change from within first, and the rest will follow.

Be Who You Were Destined to Be

Woman Closing Her Eyes While Holding Red Flower

Who are you? Who will you be? What will you do with your life?

All questions you are consistently asked throughout your life, and yet do you really know the answers to them? Will you ever truly know how to answer them in such a way that is true to your self and understood by others? I don't believe so. I think that each of us tries to figure out who we are through many channels of self expression. None of which somewhat define a little piece of who we are, but have no real value or meaning in our lives.

Some say by the time you graduate high school you will know who you are. Others say after you graduate college or university, then you'll know for sure. I think it is difficult to pinpoint a timeline for knowing who you are and who you will become, because as humans we are constantly growing and changing and learning new things. How can one judge their potential when they have yet to explore the world and know where they are?

Defining yourself:
- Write a 30 second pitch, answering two questions:
1. Who are you?
2. Why should I care?
- Are you a person or are you a job title. Never say you are Head of Company Y or the significant other of So&So.
- Describe who you think you are in 5 words. Does it match who you show you are?

Being yourself:
- Don't be who people tell you to be.
- Do what you like doing and find those who enjoy the same things.
- Be kind to strangers because they may show you a hidden piece of yourself.
- Have a value system and stick to it. Don't compromise yourself.

Stand up for what you believe in:
- What do you believe in? Write it out.
- Join a protest for your favorite cause.
- Join an organization or campus club that you can fully support.
- Are you for or against organized religions? Join those who differ from your viewpoint.

Learn from those around you:
- In your path to self discovery, open your eyes to the people you do not associate with.
- Everyone you meet knows something you don't. So listen when they speak.
- Have Humility.
- Attitudes are everything! If someone has an attitude, good or bad, seek to understand it.

Be present:
- Ground yourself in the present moment.
- Be Mindful.
- Focus on what is right in front of you.
- Accept things you cannot change and move on from it.

What you do is not who you are, but merely a small part of the greatness that defines you. If you only address yourself as your job title or by your partner life is going to be dull and you will not have a sense of self or self worth. Believe in yourself. Set goals and achieve them. Don't just have a goal and not act on it. Action is key to anything you do. Be active in finding yourself and showing who you are to the world. If not for the world or anyone else, find yourself for you. Knowing who you are and what you stand for and what you believe in sets you a million miles apart from those who don't. It might be lonely being who you are and standing up for what you believe in, but if you don't no one else will. It is up to you to be the lead explorer in your life and take it for all it is worth. Find your passions. Please I urge you to find things you enjoy doing and never stop doing them. You are worth it. Society will beat you down to a pulp if you let it. And you can't let it. You have to fight the societal norms and break away from things you cannot change focusing on the things you can. And change them. Change yourself if you do not like who you are becoming. That is the part of exploring yourself no one talks about. You can change if you truly wish to.

Awakening Hidden Quantum Cells

Who hasn't heard the words, 'you're only using ten percent of your brain' and wondered why such an enormous percentage of what many believe is the most important part of our physical body lies dormant, seemingly useless. The cells in the remaining ninety percent and other parts of your body have been patiently waiting for you to understand why they could not perform because understanding is essential to begin the process of reawakening! Reawakening you say? Yes, because once you knew; they are quantum cells that perform in quantum energy.

Much has been written about planet Earth's impending ascension into a new energy, the 4th dimension. Our planet is still about 85 years from a full entry into this energy field, but we have entered the outer bands and just like those of a hurricane, we can feel the effects of the energy. Things are changing! Those who have noticed the change are likely to be the ones who have been intentionally 'tuned in,' the seekers of a higher state of consciousness. This profound search had that seemed so difficult has become less and less so in the past 5 years. The doors to greater awareness no longer requires a long and arduous push to gain entry. It is a partially open door that we approach now. The magnetic field in these outer bands is not nearly so dense producing energy with less gravitational push/pull.

Consciousness is a state of awareness. When we are sleeping our body continues to function even though we are not aware of it; not so when we are awake. This simple procedure of waking up is natural and has been experienced by all even though most people are unaware that this act is a different state of consciousness. It is a reflection of how natural and easy the process of changing our state of awareness really is. Quantum energy exists in a much higher frequency field. It is this that the quantum cells in our body respond to. They begin to 'wake up' recognizing the change even though we may be unaware of it. In the outer bands we are capable of using about thirty percent of our brain. Look at all you have been able to accomplish in life utilizing ten percent and imagine what can happen when you triple that! It's time to wake up.

What can you practically do as you begin the process of waking up? Greater self-healing is on the horizon. You will become aware of unhealthy changes in your body and intuitively know what can help you mend. You will experience a greater understanding of who is around you and what their intentions really are as you are able to 'tune in' to their energy field. This allows you to make far better choices about the people you surround yourself with and what kind of effect other people will have on your life.

Pay attention to things that used to mildly interest you as you suddenly seem to grasp how they work and develop a deeper fascination with them. You may feel guided to a new field of work or new hobbies as the memory bank of the Akashi begins to surface. You remember what you used to know. It is a kinder gentler energy we are approaching. The turmoil in our streets will dissipate as we move further into the new energy. It is not supported in the higher frequency.

While scientists may seek a method to activate these cells, it is consciousness that allows them to function. Consciousness is simply intent; there must be an awareness of and intent to move into the new energy field and the door will be open to do so.

Garbage Pails of the Past

Why search for hope and solutions by rummaging through the garbage pails of the past? Even when you are tired of trying to solve the same problem it becomes habit to search through things you have tried and discarded; discarded because they never worked. You may believe these are the only options available because they are all you are familiar with, limiting any opportunity to escape. The same problems keep coming around because they were never solved. The same failed solutions continue to fail because they are the wrong response. Until you stop digging through the same old ways out you will be condemned to dumpster diving in the refuse pile of life.

Maybe your response has been to do nothing, because you didn't know what to do. That is the most typical human reaction. If you have the same head-on collisions in relationships you may have repeatedly left and just started over, only to find the same old issues with new partners. If you have been wrestling with the same old challenges and applying the same old solutions, you have been getting the same old results. You cannot achieve a new and better result if you are retrieving old ideas and attitudes found in the garbage pails of your past. You have the power to control or destroy your destiny through the solutions you choose to apply. Choices are the difference between being pitiful or powerful.

The path to powerful begins with putting some fire in your tank. This means that you finally allow the garbage to be permanently disposed of and get fired up about seeking real solutions. If your issues are relationship based you may need to take a moment and look within. After trying many partners and getting the same results it is time to realize that you have tried changing everything but yourself. It is also a good time to accept that the only thing you will ever control in life is your response... to everything. It does not matter who you are or how much or how little you have, this is ultimately the only thing you control. You are needlessly burning the fire in your tank by attempting to change other people, or to control them. You can do that for yourself; that's all. If you insist on continuing to try changing others you will become a battering ram against a brick wall. Better to use your fire to make a fast exit.

Whatever the challenge, a better answer is lurking about. Become a seeker of information. Reach out for new ideas on a search engine, at the library, group discussions or any of the multitudes of places to learn. Explore what has worked for others in similar situations. Expect to find the right response; wait for what really feels right to you. New information and better responses allow you to finally solve the problems. You will no longer be defined by your past; you'll be prepared for your future!

Changing for Good Is Shocking for the Mind

Image result for being creative

Feeling well in this world is fake these days. Today, real happiness seems completely toxic like a sugar in a jar.

But, I am sure, it would be great to experience real happiness living as a human.

What does it mean? People don't see that perspective of living to the fullest.

Me either... I am still working on changing my thoughts, removing it from my system for good.

But what if our existence kills our soul every day? It creates a serious havoc in our minds. If you take over the pain of the planet, culture, religion, bad habits, it will pain you even more.

It drains energetic and emotional darkness to our hearts. Living by humans is hypnotic trance like where we are drowning to millions of lies and false agendas.
It is the automatic way of living in a closed box of illusions of imprisoned mind.

The mind doesn't want to break those patterns and become free. This is a game of illusions. It stops humanity to exist and expand their true self-empowerment, inner strength.

The energy is gone from our heart center and the body as well.
It is so toxic so it literally kills you.

Unfortunately, your mind accepted too many false ideas. It is impossible to become true authentic self because you believed in lies.

You might be free to do what you want from a physical perspective. But you experienced some bad stories from the past called traumas.

There is a connection to the same egoistic system of beliefs and thoughts. More drama, more powerful pain appears.

Instead of positivity, you became a negative individual who holds toxic programs and suffers.

If you remove all toxicity, you will become independent. You will detach yourself from the world of illusionary dreams. You will just experience real freedom, happiness, and self-awareness.

You do not have to find help of other people, beg them for forgiveness. There is no guilt, shame nor depression which leads to the death of the soul.

This is how it should always be.

It is like the competition. You win or fail the race and the price is huge.

If you do nothing, you will pay consequences for your ignorance.

You ignore if you wish, it is your choice. But be sure you will stay imprisoned for good. This is the highest price, humanity pays these days.

Anyone tells you that you are not free. It is miserable to look how humanity lost the drive to be real humans without their real hearts and real souls.

So remember, the only person you can find help and answer your questions is - you.

But what about the soul?

The soul is the combination of different factors, essences of your being. It contains your beautiful attributes like strength, freedom, happiness and enlightenment of your individualism.

You can become a better human, who can expand his self-awareness.

Then, your true self- becomes effortless.

Build Powerful Boundaries Using Deadlines - 3 Timely Tips

Deadlines don't sound very inviting, do they? But the word does grab our attention, so I suppose that's a good thing.

But while the word deadlines sounds daunting, I would argue that the best way to deal with deadlines is by embracing the reality that you are in charge (not them). Changing your relationship to your deadlines changes everything!

So when you feel stressed and on overload, step back and think about how to manage the pressures of multiple priorities, tasks, and goals. The skills you practice now will serve you well when you need them most.

To get the ball rolling, how about transforming your deadlines into rewarding exercises in productivity? Not only does this enhance your efficiency, it also builds your confidence, reduces your stress and offers you peace of mind, too.

Do this by re-framing your deadlines as a series of boundary challenges that you possess the power to manage. It is vital to be clear about the fact that you have the power to manage whatever deadline you are working with.

These are your deadlines; you are in charge of them.

Next, use the 3 Time Tips outlined below, knowing that as you practice these skills, you enhance your ability to achieve the goals you've set. This success generates enormous vitality and fundamentally changes the way you relate to deadlines. Doesn't that sound like a win-win proposition?

You and Your Deadlines: 3 Time Tips

1. Understand and respect your hard deadlines.

Hard deadlines are themselves time boundaries: something has to be done by a specific time and date.

These deadlines are non-negotiable and they offer you excellent opportunities to exercise focus and self-reference. That's because to successfully meet a hard deadline you need to set boundaries for yourself (and maybe also for others).

To enhance your self-reference regarding a hard boundary, identify the ways that meeting the deadline will benefit you. This empowers you as it connects you with the task more fully; you now have a personal investment in accomplishing it.

2. Use soft deadlines in combination with hard deadlines.

You can use soft deadlines to reduce the pressure of hard deadlines.

Soft deadlines are actually more like guidelines than deadlines. As necessary, they can be rescheduled to better manage hard deadlines. Just be sure they don't fall off your To Do List entirely!

A good example of a task where soft deadlines can work is raking leaves. You want to be sure to clean them up before the snow flies, but you can exercise some flexibility as to exactly when you do this.

Aim to create your soft deadline well in advance of the hard deadline so you have breathing room.

Another related time tool that can be helpful with hard deadlines is using the "Times-2 Rule" when creating your schedule. Building in extra time for each step positions you to meet your deadline (maybe even with time to spare)!

3. Create a "due date" master plan.

Life isn't simple, and we often have competing priorities. So it's very helpful to step back, scan your schedule and To-Do List to coordinate your various hard and soft deadlines.

And when you do this, be sure to include time to sustain your emotional and physical health. By focusing on your inner well-being, and releasing non-essentials, you shift from an outward-looking scarcity mentality to a self-referenced inner abundance mentality.

Shifting your energetic approach to boundaries and building your time management skills means that you see managing and meeting deadlines as really activating your power. As you build on your successes, you reinforce self-trust, generate more self-confidence, enjoy your productivity, and actually find more time!

Achieving Supernatural Abundance

What exactly is supernatural abundance and how do you achieve it? When I think of supernatural I think of something that is unknown, something that is outside of myself. Some consider supernatural to be the same as spiritual because we cannot see the soul and is therefore a supernatural element in our lives.

Others think of things like ghosts and monsters when they think of supernatural. For me, I like to think of it as a combination of everything that we haven't yet learned or  understood.

Supernatural abundance is abundance that comes from a place that we do not yet understand. It can still come from within us, even if we don't fully understand what that means.

Many years ago, I was in a dark place, my world felt very large and I felt very small. It was hard to look past my own nose to see the world around me. All I could see was the pain, all I understood was sorrow. During those times it was hard to understand where abundance played a role in my life.

I was wanting for many things, food, clothing, love, and security. Though looking back I can see that I did have things to be thankful for and in some cases there was abundance in my life, I was just not in a place where I could see it at the time.

Somewhere along the way I found faith in something greater than myself and I learned so many valuable lessons during that period that it helped shape me into the person that I am today.

This faith allowed me to see past my sorrow and past my circumstances. It allowed me to see that I was special, in the same way that you are special. What the most important thing about that experience was that I learned to stop being a victim.

When you allow yourself to play the victim role you deny yourself the supernatural abundance that you deserve. This abundance that is simply waiting for you to accept that you deserve it.

The time seemed to stop for a while, I was growing, I was changing but it felt as though it was happening so quickly that the world was standing still while I was "evolving". This supernatural change that happens when you open up yourself and when you say to yourself "I'm ready". This is when the abundance starts to pour into your life.

Achieving supernatural abundance isn't about anything more than making a decision to believe in yourself. It is about deciding that today is going to be the day that you take charge of your life and you allow your faith to guide you to where you want to be.

If you are saying to yourself that you don't have any faith remember, it is not about your religious beliefs, faith is more than that, faith is something that you believe in even when others tell you not to. Determine where you will keep your faith and hold onto it because it is that faith that is going to be the driving force that is going to help you to evolve into the person that you want to be.

It is that faith that is going to show you the abundance that you seek and when you follow it and allow it to guide you, abundance will be well within your reach.

Eat, Sleep, Internet - The Procrastination Spell

Eat. Sleep. Internet - a deadly combination! These equally essential things can sometimes dominate our days, making sure we don't do anything other than the above three. The combination of the these three things is all that is needed to cast a deadly spell on almost everyone. A spell which is known as Procrastination!

Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you desperately need to be productive and need to get work done but yet you can't seem to get off your phone or laptop? Whether you have a busy day coming tomorrow, stuff you need to get done or even a test to study for? Sleep, food and the Internet seem just too tempting. Well, I've been there before. There has been countless times where I've fallen victim to this spell.

So, what did I do to solve it?

I tried my best to get most of the stuff I needed to do on my laptop or phone. That way, I'll have to be forced to get started on my work whenever I go online. I try to get notes to read on my phone so that I can even study at random places if needed. It's also a great way to avoid awkward situations while doing something beneficial.

When it comes to stuff like writing articles and blogs, it's harder to type out everything on my phone. Instead, I take down ideas and work on it when I'm free. As for the other stuff, that I can't do online, I try to take small steps to getting around to do them.

For example, if you're stuck in a habit pattern where you barely spend time on your work outside of your laptop screen, then changing things straight away is not an advisable option, at all. Contrary to popular believe, you can't suddenly change, even if it is a good change that's gonna help you out in the long run. Changing too fast is seriously going to cause a major traffic jam to your system.

When you are constantly procrastinating, you plant a seed in your mind, and this seed, just like any regular seed is going to grow into a huge tree if you don't stop it. So now that you've been procrastinating for a while and you suddenly try to stop, you're basically trying to cut down a huge oak tree with a pen-knife. And in case you haven't noticed, that's not a good idea.

So, what's the solution? I know, I know, everyone says the same thing. Change slowly, try being productive for five minutes, then ten minutes and slowly increase it. You've probably heard it before, but it's kinda true. Personally, when I first heard this, I didn't change at all. It took me a really long time to even think about taking a five-minute break from procrastinating; which at that time was my main event of the day.

So here's what I did, I started working with a group of people who were decently focused on getting their stuff done. Slowly, their productive vibes started getting to me. Without even realising it, I started getting more and more productive!

You may be wondering how this all works? It may not seem likely that the people around you could impact you so much. Well, it is possible, you see, as per the Law of Vibration and Attraction.

So that's how I managed to break the spell of procrastination that I was stuck in. Now it's your turn to start being productive, so get off the Internet and go do something useful!

The Unfair Truth About How Creative People Succeed

The other week, I was invited to a dinner hosted by a friend. Those attending included people I’ve admired for years. Halfway through the dinner, I silently asked myself, “How did I get here?” The answer lies in what I subsequently learned.
For years, I had heard people talk about their influential friendships and subsequent success, and each time, I would seethe with envy. It seemed unfair. Of course those people were successful. They knew the right people. They were in the right place at the right time. They got lucky.
Years later, however, I discovered that success is born of luck -- I don’t think any honest person can dispute that. But luck, in many ways, can be created, or at the very least, improved. The truth is, life is not fair. For creative work to spread, you need more than talent. You have to get exposure to the right networks. And as unfair as that may seem, it’s the way the world has always worked.
The good news is, you have more control over this than you realize.

Creativity: a systems approach

What makes a person creative? As human beings, of course, we are all endowed with the ability to create. But, what is the difference between that kind of “little c” creativity and the world-changing “big C” creativity that changes industries and leaves a legacy for generations to come?
In his decades-long study of creativity, management psychology expert Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi described what he called a “systems approach.” Since "creative" work tends to be subjective, he posited a model that included three systems:
  • The domain
  • The field
  • The individual
In order to be considered creative (in the sense that it offers some kind of enduring work the world remembers), a work must satisfy all three of these areas. Here’s how it works: First, an individual must master his or her craft in a given domain (art, science, mathematics,etc.). Then, this person must offer the creative work to a field of influencers in that domain who are trusted experts. Finally, those gatekeepers must decide whether the work is worth being accepted into the domain as being authoritative.
That’s the systems approach to creativity. And as much as I initially winced at the word “gatekeepers” when considering what makes creative work succeed, once I started reading biographies of famous artists, scientists and musicians, Csikszentmihalyi's theory made a lot of sense. Talent is only part of the equation. The rest is networking.

Hemingway, Paris and enduring work

When he was just a young man in his early 20s, Ernest Hemingway moved from Chicago to a poor district in Paris. He had just returned from a short stint of serving with the Red Cross in World War I and wanted to pursue a career in writing.
There was just one problem: Hemingway didn’t have much exposure to other writers. Who would teach him?
In Chicago, Hemingway met Sherwood Anderson, who encouraged him to move to Paris to meet Gertrude Stein, who led a community of writers, poets and artists there. Plus, it was cheaper to live in Paris, and Hemingway could live modestly while still having time to travel and write.
In Paris, he met Stein, as well as Ezra Pound, James Joyce and many others who would shape his work for years to come. This included a connection via F. Scott Fitzgerald to Scribner’s, the publisher that would later publish his novels and change the course of his career forever.
Before that decade in Paris, Hemingway was a writer of some notable talent and a pretty good journalist. But after those years when he immersed in the creative work of others, he became a household name.
Due to the connections created through that Paris community, Hemingway became one of the most famous writers of the 20th century. It’s inconceivable that such a development could have happened anywhere else. Not because there was something special about the Left Bank at that time, but because without a network, creative work does not endure. In other words, without Paris, there would have been no Hemingway. But, what does that mean for mere mortals like you and me?

Finding your own Paris

Are we doomed to failure if we don’t live in the right place at the right time? Of course not. But networks matter, maybe more than we care to admit. Vincent van Gogh’s work matured much more quickly once he met the French Impressionists. And why wouldn’t it? He now had a field of gatekeepers who both critiqued and validated his work.
Whether we like it or not, we all need some kind of objective standard against which to measure our work. And although van Gogh did not sell much of his work in his lifetime, it was the tenacity of a well-connected sister-in-law that eventually brought his paintings to market. In fact, most of the great art the world has ever seen came about not through a single stroke of genius but by the continual effort of a community.
Networks. Partnerships. Creative collaborations. This is where enduring work originates, and, incidentally, this is how we get works like The Lord of the Rings and The White Album. Creativity is not a solitary invention but a collaborative creation. And communities create opportunities for creative work to succeed. But how do you apply this approach if you don’t live someplace like Paris, New York or Rome?
Well, of course, you could move. According to Csikszentmihalyi, it’s better to move somewhere new than it is to will yourself to be more creative. And today, it’s easier than ever to transplant yourself someplace inspiring, even if your move is just temporary. I did this eight years ago, relocating from northern Illinois to Nashville and unknowingly inserting myself into what would become a hub of creativity, technology and entrepreneurship. I’m glad I did.
But you could also let go of your excuses and realize that there’s a network available to you right now, wherever you are. This may come in the form of an online mastermind group or a series of events you attend, maybe even one you organize yourself. The truth is, there are connections everywhere and always more resources available to those willing to look.

A seat at the table

Five years ago, I decided to do something radical -- well, radical for me at least. I let go of my cynicism and began reaching out to influential bloggers and authors, people I had watched for years and wanted to know. I asked them to meet me for coffee. And here’s the crazy part: Most of them said yes.
Even though I was a shy person, I met these heroes of mine and followed up with them, doing everything I could think of to help them. In some cases, it just meant buying their coffee. In others, I would interview them for my tiny blog, realizing that even the most influential people don’t mind talking about themselves.
I tried to be the kind of person these people would want to invest in -- following every piece of advice they gave, doing everything they told me to do and not questioning a single word of it. And at some point, I got lucky.
It’s naive to say success doesn’t involve luck. Of course, it does. Crazy stuff happens all the time, stuff we can’t control that sometimes works in our favor. At the same time, luck is not completely out of your control. Luck can be planned. Although I can’t tell when or where luck is going to come from, I do know that the more you put yourself in the company of greatness, the more likely some of that greatness will rub off on you.
So if you want a seat at the table, the process might look something like this:

1. Find a gatekeeper.

For Hemingway, this was Sherwood Anderson and eventually Gertrude Stein. These were the people who held the keys to the kingdom, and every domain has at least one. Find someone who is connected to the people you want to know, and be strategic in reaching out, tenacious in staying in touch and intentional in demonstrating your competency.

2. Connect with people in the network.

Stein introduced Hemingway to other writers in Paris who could help him, but he was also relentless about meeting with them. He used to spar with Ezra Pound on a regular basis, boxing with him and learning how to write terse prose in the process. If you show the gatekeeper you’re willing to learn, he or she will likely introduce you to others and keep investing in you.

3. Help as many people as possible.

This is crucial. It’s not just whom you know, it’s whom you help. People remember what you do for them a lot more than they remember how clever you were. In spite of his reputation as an alpha male, Hemingway did this, too -- helping Stein get her work published, encouraging Fitzgerald when he suffered from creative blocks and bringing attention to the work of the Left Bank.
Of course, every person’s journey is his or her own. But what I am now more certain of than ever is that success in any creative field is contingent on the networks you are a part of. The question is, will you embrace the power of networks, or will you keep thinking those people are just "lucky"?
Luck comes to us all. But those who recognize it are the ones who succeed. Every story of success is really a story of community, and the way you find yours is by reaching out and taking advantage of the opportunities that present themselves -- whether the setting is Paris, Chicago or your own hometown.

6 Questions You Must Ask Yourself Before Making a Change

Improving your life is hard work. Having these answers before you start is key.

Working out how to change something, especially a bad habit, is one of the most frustrating experiences you can have. Many people know what they want to change, but don't have the knowledge needed to implement that change.
Perhaps you can relate: You start a new diet on a Monday and wonder why, as an intelligent, self-motivated, driven person, you cannot seem to keep a cupcake out of your mouth by Wednesday. What's up with that? Or you wonder why you can't seem to kick your procrastination habit, your lack of an exercise habit, your bad work habit, or any other part of your existence that is not serving you well.

Sound familiar at all?
Understanding the process of change—why we are the way we are, and how to change when we really want to—is incredibly important. The attribute of driving effective change can give you the keys to the kingdom of success and happiness. However, if you don't learn how to use it, you can stay mired in a dark hole of frustration that can lead to self-defeat and low self-esteem.
So let's start with what we typically know: Changing behaviours is hard. (Change is hard, period.) You get wired to certain behavior patterns, and your brain gets stuck in a groove that takes concerted, conscious, and consistent effort to change. And even when you do manage to change for a few days, weeks or months, it is all too easy to slip back into old patterns.
The good news is that we know, through the latest neuroscience, that our brains are "plastic." This means they can create new neural pathways, which allows you to create change and form new patterns of behavior that can stick over time. You find a new groove, so to speak. But it takes work—sometimes, a lot of work. And it takes time. The popular myth that you can quickly and easily change a deeply-ingrained habit in 21 days has been largely disproven by brain and behavioral scientists. They now think it actually takes anywhere from six to nine months to create the new neural pathways that support changing behavior.
Sorry.
There are three things you need to make any change, whether mental, emotional or physical: desire, intent, and persistence. Our culture is filled with magazine covers that say you can meet your dream partner by the weekend, land your dream job in five days, or lose 10 pounds in two weeks. This can leave mere mortals feeling completely inadequate when they fail to achieve such results, which are completely unrealistic, if not downright impossible, in the first place.
When you consider that only 8% of people actually follow through on intentions to change a habit, you can see why it's so critical to understand enough about the change process, and yourself, to smooth a path to success.
So what are the steps and considerations? Here are some questions to think about, as you begin to create positive change in a lasting way:
Do you really want it?
There is no point in saying you are going to stop working so much, so you can get some semblance of balance in your life, if in reality you really don't care that much about balance, and you really love to work. Who are you doing it for? Don't kid yourself. You must be serious and care about the change you decide to make, so you'll be willing to work for it and follow through.
What need is being served by what you are doing now?
Your current behavior is there for a reason, or you wouldn't be doing it. Hard to swallow, but true. Whether you're a workaholic, 20 pounds overweight, have anger management issues, or are unhappily single—your current situation is serving you somehow. So take some time to think about this. Whether the need is relaxation but the behavior is binge drinking, or the need is recognition but the behavior is overwork, you first need to identify what need is being served by your current behavior. Once you have the answer, you can work out how to meet this need in another way, smoothing the path to change.
How else can you meet your needs?
So, you have identified the current behavior and how it is serving you. Now think about how else you could get this same need met. You may relate to this example. For some people, eating foods they know are not only bad for them, and in fact likely to leave them feeling tired, grumpy, and full of self-loathing, is less about the foods, and more about the nurturing, comfort, or distraction they provide. How else could you get your need met? Perhaps retreating to your meditation cushion, your yoga mat, the bath tub, or even your bed, would give you an even greater sense of the nurturing you need, without the guilt, the self-esteem crash from not following through on your intention, and, of course, the pounds. So when you think about the needs you have, how else can they be met?
What's the price of not changing?
You will experience ambivalence on the change path, no question about it. And that's okay. But to progress down the road, you have to ask yourself: What is the price of not changing? If you really want a promotion, but are too fearful to ask for the management training you need, the price is staying in the same role. Is overcoming your fear worth the goal? Or if you really want to get healthy, lose weight and get fit, but you don't want to have to cut the sugar and get out walking, what is the price of that behavior? Putting on yet another 10 kilos? Think about and write down any negative effects your current behaviors are creating in your life—self‑loathing, boredom, career stagnation, frustration. Once you have hit this wall of realization, you are in the perfect place to turn around and move forward.
What positive image can pull you forward?
It is known, from research in positive psychology and neuroscience, that you'll have more success when you move towards something positive rather than away from something negative. It is also known that positive images pull you forward. (Think vision boards, athletes visualizing their performance success, or thinking through the positive outcome of a business presentation before it takes place.) It works, and science proves it. So what positive image of the outcome you want can you visualize to pull you toward success? Come up with one; have it firmly in your mind; place it on a wall, in your computer, in your journal, or anywhere you will reference it; and look at it frequently. It can be especially helpful when your resolve is slipping, to remind you what you are working so hard for.
Are you acknowledging success?
When you have made progress on your efforts, it is important to acknowledge that achievement. When you celebrate your efforts, you create upward spirals of momentum that help reinforce the positive change and make it stick. Recognizing your efforts also helps to reinforce the direction in which you are moving, and motivates you further toward your goals. Recognizing, acknowledging, and celebrating progress, however small, is a key to success on your change path.

Change can be challenging. Anyone who has tried to change a habit knows this is true. But it is possible. And you can smooth the path to success by being aware of the cycle of change, being prepared, and being consistent. The result is worth the effort, if you want it badly enough to work for it
