Loving Yourself Can Heal Fear

celebrate, celebration, dream

"I believe that anyone can conquer fear by doing the things he fears to do, provided he keeps doing them until he gets a record of successful experiences behind him." ~Eleanor Roosevelt

I know from my own experiences that what Eleanor Roosevelt said in the above quote is very true.

  • I used to be scared to speak up for myself or speak my truth, and now I do it easily.
  • I used to be afraid of public speaking or doing radio or TV shows, and now I do these easily.
  • I used to be scared to be in my power, and now it's natural for me.
  • I used to be afraid of confrontation and conflict, and now I welcome these experiences in order to learn from them.
  • I used to be scared that if I opened to learning with my higher guidance, there would be nothing there, and now I know that I'm never alone and am always being guided.
  • I used to be afraid of my deeper painful feelings, and now I embrace them with love and compassion and allow them to move through me. I now know that I can lovingly manage them and that they won't overwhelm me.
  • I used to be afraid to write, and now writing flows easily.

We can't talk ourselves out of fear, which is what our ego wounded-self tries to do. When we choose to operate as a loving adult with a strong motivation to love ourselves, then we don't put our inner child out there alone to do something we are afraid of doing.
For example, when I first started public speaking and teaching - before Spirit brought us inner work - I was very scared of not knowing what to say or of forgetting what I wanted to say. I was scared that I would get so nervous that I wouldn't be able to talk. After I started to practice inner work, I realized that I had been putting my inner child out there to do the teaching. Of course she was scared! It was not a job for my inner child!

Now, before I speak or teach or do a radio or TV show, I make sure to tell my inner child that this isn't her job - that it's the job of my loving adult allowing my higher self to speak through me. Instead of trying to control what I say, I surrender to my higher guidance and allow her to be the speaker and teacher.

After doing this many times, the fear went away.

Healing Fear Through Loving Yourself

The more my inner child knows that I am here loving myself through fear, the safer she feels with things that used to feel very scary. Healing fear through loving myself means:

  • Consistently showing up as a loving adult so that my inner child doesn't feel alone with scary things.
  • Being willing to do the scary things over and over until the positive experiences become part of my neural pathways.
  • Letting my inner child know that it's okay to make mistakes and to fail, and that my worth and lovability are not attached to outcomes.
  • Valuing my willingness to try new and scary things so that my inner child feels valued for the effort rather than for the outcome.
  • Being compassionate rather than critical with my feelings when things don't turn out the way I want.
  • Letting go of having to know ahead of time whether or not something is best for me and being willing to trust what I want and the information I receive from my guidance regarding what is in my highest good - willing to go with the flow of life rather than trying to control it.

I encourage you to start doing what you want to do rather than allowing fear to stop you, and see what happens!

Accessing Great Thoughts From Your Spiritual Guidance

Have you discovered what connects you with your spiritual Guidance and supports you in downloading 'great thoughts?'

"All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking." - Friedrich Nietzsche

I have been walking almost daily for about 50 years. I love my walks out in nature with my dogs, doing my morning prayers and my Inner Bonding process. Generally, I spend most of my inner work process communing with my spiritual Guidance. For over 30 years, since Spirit downloaded the process for our inner work to me and Dr. Erika, I've received most of my "great thoughts" from my Guidance during my walks.

So I was delighted when I discovered this quote by Nietzsche!

Some people can sit in meditation and receive their great thoughts from their spiritual Guidance, but not me. I'm not generally a sitter - I'm mostly a mover. Even as a small child, if I had to be indoors, I couldn't sit still for very long, but outdoors was a different story. We went camping a lot when I was a child. I loved to climb on top of very big rock outcroppings and sit, mesmerized by the beauty of nature. Even as a child, I sometimes had great thoughts, sitting out in nature.

But then I discovered walking in nature and that changed everything for me. There is something about walking out in nature that connects me with my higher Guidance. I discovered that walking in nature while doing my prayers, expressing gratitude and doing my inner work process out loud, is my very best form of meditation. Perhaps it's akin to what some indigenous peoples do when they move into a trance state through dancing and chanting. I don't go into a trance state, but I certainly do go into an altered state that raises my frequency and allows me profound access to my Guidance.

Doing this each morning sets the tone of the day for me. I find it much easier to stay connected the rest of the day when I've taken my half-hour morning walk. Not only do I love walking in nature, I also love that it sets the tone for my day and supports me in staying connected throughout the day. And, since I do a fast walk up and down hills, I get exercise at the same time!

We generally do what we love to do. Since I love my walks in nature, and since I love connecting with my Guidance, I am highly motivated to walk each day. In fact, I try very hard not to miss my walk. Even in the dead of winter when it's cold and snowy, I walk, wearing my heated vest and heated gloves. I marvel at the beauty of the snow-covered bare trees.

Walking in nature doing my inner work isn't the only way I access my Guidance, but I've found it's the best way to start my day. I also access my Guidance when I paint and make pots on my wheel, and when we kayak on our lake, and when I play with my animals - and, of course, any time I'm in a true intent to learn.

I encourage you to find what works for you to access your 'great thoughts.' What raises your frequency and connects you with the love and wisdom of your spiritual Guidance? What fills your heart with peace and joy? What do you love to do so much that you don't have to force yourself - you do it for the joy of it?

I hope you find what does this for you so you can experience the great joy of connecting with your profound Source of love, peace, joy and great thoughts!

Relationships: Loving Yourself by Taking The Sacred Pause

All of us have 'triggers' that set off our fear or anxiety and may lead to our reactivity - anger, defensiveness, withdrawal, compliance or resistance. We are especially triggered in our important relationships.

Take a moment right now to think about what, in your relationships, triggers you into your fear or anxiety.

Are you triggered by:

  • Another's anger, annoyance, criticism, judgment or rejection?
  • Another's withdrawal or resistance?
  • Another's unhappiness, whining or complaining?
  • A partner leaving on a trip?
  • A partner coming home late and not calling?
  • A partner looking at another attractive person?
  • Another's lack of consideration?
  • Another's messiness?
  • Another's forgetfulness?
  • Someone always being late?
  • When you feel unseen or invisible to someone who is important to you?
  • When you feel unjustly accused?
  • (Add your own)

While you might not be aware of it, we all have at least a second to choose how we want to respond to the trigger - and most times more than a second. We often go on automatic pilot and unconsciously choose our standard protective behavior, but we have the choice to love ourselves by taking a second or two to breathe, tune in, and become conscious of this moment of choice. This is the sacred pause - the old "count to 10" before responding.

If you choose to take a breath and tune in, you are giving yourself a chance to respond as a loving adult rather than reacting from your wounded ego self. You have a chance to love yourself by bringing compassion to yourself; by choosing the intent to learn, or disengage from the situation. You have the chance to love yourself by speaking your truth if that is appropriate, and asking your higher self about the loving action toward yourself and the other in this situation. With practice, you can learn to do all of this in the time it takes to take a deep breath.

The challenge is remembering to love yourself by taking the sacred pause and remembering to tune in to yourself and your higher guidance. It is hard to remember to do this when your fight or flight reaction is triggered. However, when it is very important to you to love yourself, you will remember to respond as a loving adult rather than from your wounded self, and you will practice and practice until you remember more and more of the time.

When you forget, accept it rather than criticizing yourself. It is VERY hard to remember to consciously choose your response when your body is in the stress response of fight or flight. Each time you do remember, notice how wonderful you feel - regardless of what the other person is doing. Notice that your painful feelings come more from your reactivity than from the other person's behavior. Notice how free and empowered you feel when you respond as a loving adult, loving yourself rather than abandoning yourself in reaction to your fear and anxiety.

When you don't remember, take some time to go over the situation and decide how you wish you had responded. If, each time you forget to take the sacred pause, you decide how you wish you would have responded, and you practice it, you will find yourself responding as a loving adult more of the time.
