Overcoming Adversity on the Path to Success

In the nursery rhyme Little Red Riding Hood we see her on the way to her grandmother's house. Along the way she runs into a big bad wolf who is bent on making sure Little Red Riding Hood never makes it there. This is a good illustration of the way adversity gets in the way of those striving to be successful.

It would be nice if all we had to do was walk on the path and eventually run into success. No obstacles or difficulties; just smooth sailing. Sadly, that is almost never the case. In order to prevail to reach our goal we must first overcome the many obstacles that stand in our way.

To think that adversities don't exist would be foolish. Every path that leads to success has some adversity on it. The question should be just what the adversity is. If it is something that is happening to you because you are trying to become great, then it should be expected. However, some adversity is not so much about you but about what you are attempting. This adversity must be considered differently.

Looking to lose weight? The adversity may be food, love of eating, working in a restaurant, etc. These factors you have some control over. Flying a spacecraft to Venus will require more than just overcoming personal adversity. You will need a lot of support in order to make that a reality.

These obstacles that stand in the way can come in a variety of disguises including:

• People - isn't it amazing that most people have no problem with helping you when you are struggling but stand in opposition when you on a clear path to becoming a winner. Most people are OK with you surviving but not thriving and certainly not passing them up on the road to success.

• Places - maybe you have a great idea but not the right place to make it happen. Location is key to finding success. You can have the right idea and all the ingredients you need but if you try to make it happen in a not so desirable place then failure is imminent.

• Materials - in the tv show MacGyver he has a knack for using nearby materials to help him out of a jam. In the same way you cannot be a success unless you have the materials you need to make things happen.

It is possible to overcome adversity to achieve success.

Message From the Universe: Never Settling for Less Than What You Deserve

Young woman thinking with pen while working / studying at her desk

"As surely as mountains are to be climbed and oceans sailed, your dreams are meant to come true. This is why you're here, to live the life of your dreams. Not to be tested, challenged, and tried, but to conquer, champion, and rule. Keep going, forge ahead, press on, and the day must dawn when your thirsts shall be quenched, and you, exalted.

Never settle for less, don't ever think it's too late, and never, ever, ever compromise a dream.

Exalting you early,
The Universe"

This is definitely a message that I needed today. Being an entrepreneur, with all 14 projects that I juggle on a daily basis, there are times where I question myself as to the direction that I need to take to bring them all to completion. As a business owner, no one is really telling me if the path taken is the right one. I go with the flow, studying the different options and choosing the best one among the many offered. I am not always sure if that chosen one will optimize the end results so I sometimes just take a guess and follow my gut instinct. However, at the end of my tunnel, I do see light. Even though that light is barely enough to clear my path to success, it is still there. The hope that every of my endeavor will eventually break free and help me reach my goals is giving me that energy to push forward no matter what obstacle in front of me.

I know I can't control any of the outcome of my endeavors and live my life in the edge of my seat, with no security blanket, NO salary, NO steady income, NO guarantee whatsoever. Life presents NO certainty whatsoever, and the same goes for relationships. If you expect something to happen and focus too much on that one thing, you will end up being very disappointed. Do not live your life around the hope that your significant other will be with you forever and start developing insecurities in the relationship. You will end up damaging what can be something great to a guaranteed demise and destruction. Let the relationship develop and go with the flow. Do not worry about the "if's" and the "how's", focus on the NOW. It will help you guarantee a more peaceful life.

Why Failing Isn't A Big Deal

Close-up Photography of Pink Lotus

We all want to succeed at what we choose to do. But when we experience failure after failure, it's hard to believe that success may be just around the corner.

There have been lots of articles about famous people who failed on their way to success. Some of them failed thousands of times, and yet they still persevered.

Their secret? They believed in themselves and in their dreams. And, as David Bayer has said, "Beliefs are decisions." Once a positive dream-affirming decision is made, possibilities and opportunities begin to appear that, when grasped, will ultimately build a path to success.

The individuals listed below kept getting up after they fell down. Eventually they achieved enormous success.

Let's see if you can match the individuals with their failure or the negative feedback they received. Place the correct letter in the column to the left of the number. (The answer key is provided below the table.)

This Is Why Working Harder on Yourself Than Your Job Is The Key to a Great Fortune

A Powerful Inner Resolve

The late American motivational speaker Jim Rohn knew something many people don't: success is an inside job.

A good deal of your future success will arise from your mindset.

It is no surprise that those who are successful encounter frequent setbacks and failures.

To the uninitiated, failure may represent the absence of success. However, the person with a growth mindset knows failure is an opportunity to improve on their last attempt, drawing them closer to success.

If success is a journey then it comprises valleys and peaks, notwithstanding the many setbacks.

Gary Keller and Jay Papasan write in The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results: "Extraordinary results aren't built solely on extraordinary results. They're built on failure too. In fact, it would be accurate to say that we fail our way to success."

The key to success lies in your willingness and determination to prevail, even in the face of adversity. It is an inner knowing, despite evidence to the contrary, that you will overcome your obstacles and silence your critics.

The right mindset and a powerful inner resolve are required on the path to success.

Setbacks are not intended to discourage you from attaining victory. They are orchestrated to enrich your personal growth and lead you closer to success if you stay the distance.

Working harder on yourself than your job requires paying attention to your mindset and nurturing your inner most thoughts.

Every failure, every obstacle draws you closer to the person you must become to realise victory.

Success is the sum of your personal growth. The person who attains outstanding success has cultivated their inner world and surmounted the challenges imposed upon them.

"Success builds on success, and as this happens, over and over, you move toward the highest success possible," write Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.

Upgrade Your Mindset

Those who work hard on themselves instead of their job are invested in their personal development. They are committed to reading books, attending seminars and lectures, working with the right coaches and mentors and are lifelong learners.

They are humble in the face of victory and gracious in defeat. They realise life is about constant learning, developing and nurturing their greatest asset - themselves.

They do not have all the answers, but are willing to step out of their comfort zone and try new things, knowing the slightest information will create a snowball effect in terms of success when the time is right.

It was the French poet Victor Hugo who once said: "Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come."

The person who works hard on themselves is a leader who helps others succeed before them. They understand that in giving, they receive greater abundance and prosperity. This is a universal law and principle that whatever you sow, you shall reap.

A job pays you wages and if you are involved in sales, a commission. Nevertheless, it was Jim Rohn who reiterated in his talks: "Profits are better than wages."

He understood that when a person develops their greatest asset and their innate strengths, he or she can create unlimited income. A wage is the fee you receive set by your employer, based on the exchange of services rendered.

Profits are unlimited only by your earning potential.

Jeff Olson explains in The Slight Edge: "Every day, in every moment, you get to exercise choices that will determine whether or not you will become a great person, living a great life. Greatness is not something predetermined, predestined or carved into your fate by forces beyond your control. Greatness is always in the moment of the decision."

As you upgrade your mindset, so too does your bottom line.

Many people are unwilling to develop their greatest assets because they need certainty in their lives by way of a weekly income. It is this want for security that is their downfall because the harder you work on yourself, the greater your fortune because the sky is the limit.

You will only soar as high as you believe yourself capable of.

Therefore, your self-worth will determine your net worth.

As you develop a superior mindset, your net worth skyrockets because you are invested in your greatness, which yields far greater returns on your income.

The greatest fortunes are those developed over time, because success is a journey and requires staying the course.

Success requires a growth mindset that leads to the greatest victory and fortunes.

It is the pay-off of devoting time and energy on yourself, rather than simply working harder in your job.

The Path To Success Is A Very Lonely Road

Most people do not seem to get the fact that the path to success is a very lonely road and is never a perfect one. In truth, it does not even occur in a straight line but rather in a sinuous one since reality on the way is full of ups, downs, twists, turns, obstacles, and setbacks. Not an easy feat to achieve!

But whoever said it was going to be easy?

I do not mean to spook you, but you should be ready for it if you embark on such a journey. You need to know that this path is not for everyone and is a very lonely road indeed. But if you who are brave enough to follow your dreams, no matter how impossible, you will get there with enough persistence and patience.

The ability to stay focused for hours, days, months or even years on the path to success is the fruit of an exceptional blend of abilities, mindset, and skills that you can develop and tap into over and over to realize your biggest ideas.

Many dreams will begin, some will end just before encountering success, and others will get to fruition. Most people seem to believe that if the timing is not right or if things are not perfect, then they will never succeed.

And if you continue, you might change or adjust your sails along the way, because success is never a final destination. It is an essential thing to think of because each journey towards success in your life will evolve.

Why Success is a Very Lonely Road

You may get upset, frustrated, and even have the desire to give up when certain things are not going flawlessly as you planned it to be. My advice to you: Don't give up! The goal here is not to avoid such setbacks but rather to learn how to use them to your advantage by making them work for you instead of against you.

The road to success is a very lonely one. What I mean by that is that the sacrifices you have to make often leave you feeling isolated, like a lone wolf walking down a path looking for its prey. But realize that it filters the weak person out from the determined.

In missing sunny days and not being as social as your friends, you inevitably distance yourself, and people around you will feel like you are ignoring them. Weekend nights at home working on your dreams can often leave you feeling like one of those hermits walking across some desolated mountains.

You will find yourself having fewer friends. The sacrifices you make on the path to becoming successful come with a high price at times, but it is worth your while. Most people look at those who have more success with bitterness, jealousy, and even hatred. They fail to realize the work you had to put in while they were having fun.

It is Not a Straight Line Either

Now that you have a much understanding of the statement "The path to success is a very lonely road," you should understand that it is not a straight line either.

There are twisted and curved lines called failure, confusion, friends, enemies, family and mistakes. But, by arming yourself with weapons like determination, persistence, faith, and focus, you will make it to a place called Success.

To succeed you have to improve each day, work hard, hustle, be resourceful and self-conscious, and yes, build relationships with all. And if you choose to arm yourself with these weapons, I know you will be better equipped on the path to achieving success.

Again, it is not easy. Very few people have the guts to do this. But those who do, focus, which stands for "Follow One Course Until Successful." Such a small amount of people make goals, use time, ask the right questions, take risks, get other's opinions and make the moves that they say they would.

Actions speak louder than words. You stand out. You are reading this for a reason. So believe you can achieve all of your dreams and even more.

The Path to Success is a Journey

There is a maxim which says "If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably does not lead anywhere." Everyone has to overcome barriers in life, but a successful person is the one who faces failures with strength and audacity and surmounts them.

The path to success is a journey, one small step at the time, day after day, week after week, month after month. If you believe your dream is worth it; then you must commit to it, make the sacrifices you have to, and endure the loneliness.

It is through trials and errors, and failures that you learn. If you fail somehow and then, decide to work harder or find another way for the next time around, you will most likely succeed. But if you lose willpower on the first few obstacles coming your way, then you will continue to fail.

Do not be afraid to dream big, set goals that most think are impossible. The harder you work, the better your bed feels as you lay in it. Be aware, use your abilities and be your best. Once you make the commitment to succeed, keep going!

The Key is Patience

There is another key on your way to success, and it is called patience. Too many people are in such a hurry for instant gratification, and do not understand the real signification of "Success Overnight."

To be successful, you have to be patient. The motto of the accomplished man is "Let's try again and again." It is your determination, hard work, patience and trust in the process that lead to success.

You have to face the challenges that life throws up at you because it is the only way to succeed. If you look at the life of any successful person, you will see that they had to face many challenges and struggles.

You have to do the same at some point, even if people doubt you. But understand that it is then that you know you are doing it. It also depends on the person you are. Are you the type which fuels you to go after what you want, no matter what others say?

If you rise when you fall, you will succeed.

A Few Tips on Your Way to Achievement

  • Have big dreams. There are no such things as dreaming too big.
  • Enjoy your journey to success and the pursuit of greatness.
  • Understand you will have to make sacrifices to achieve your objectives.
  • Remember a little word called perseverance.
  • Know that grinding is often some of the fun parts.
  • Commit yourself to an idea you want to achieve.
  • Be adaptable.
  • Remember the 'all' picture.
  • Be willing to pay the toll on your path to success.
  • Prepare to be lonely. You will often have to go at it alone.
  • Cut negative people out of your life.
  • Celebrate or find pleasure in achieving the small steps on your journey.
  • Remain yourself or be a better person when success arrives.
  • Remember the people who were at your side during your struggles.
  • Know that you have to sacrifice your social life, relationships, family, and free time.
  • Treat everyone with kindness and the way you want to be treated.
  • Stay humble and be honest.
  • Take risks and do not take failures personally.
  • Keep yourself open to new ideas.
  • Be a curious person by asking questions; you can learn a lot more than a know-it-all.
  • Listen to others and value outside opinions.
  • Stop periodically and acknowledge how far you have come.

Most successful people have felt rejection countless of times, only to use it as energy to stay motivated and on track. Yes, the path to success is a very lonely road, but nothing worth having comes stress-free. If you focus on your objectives and follow your instinct, success is the only option.

Message From the Universe: Work on Quality, Not Quantity!

"A master's awareness of spiritual laws directs him or her to manifest major life changes by working with their thoughts, not by working harder.

Which isn't to say they don't sometimes work very long hours, because they do; they just don't think of it as work. Which also isn't to say they all have cool jobs that anyone would love, because they don't; they just see every task before them, no matter where they work, as a gift to unwrap.

Hmmmmm...
The Universe

Loving what you do in life is a crucial element to success. You can't be hating what you do because this feeling of excitement will disappear. You want to be able to wake up every morning, as early as possible because you are excited about starting a new day. The level of excitement is palpable. You want to tackle the day with all your energy and passion. Nothing should stop you as you know that you will face some pothole along your path but you always keep going forward. If all path to success was easy, everyone would travel that road. There is a say: "always go that extra mile, because there is never any traffic out there". It is true because no one is willing to travel that road as it may be scary at times because lack of familiarity or just because of laziness. Whatever the reason may be, this is what differentiate successful people and... well... the other type of people. Anyone who are avid gym goers and workout with weights, to grow your muscles, you need to cross that pain barrier and keep on pushing further until the lactic acid burn brings you to a state of oblivion. This is what many do not do. Crossing that painful state when working out, you allow your muscles to grow and gain size and definition. If you stop lifting when feeling pain, you will never see positive changes in your body. So what are you willing to do to reach your goals?

This answer depends on you. You are the one who knows exactly what you want out of life. You know what you need to do to make things happen. You can create yourself a clear path to success by thinking about what you need to do but if your actions are opposite of your thoughts, nothing in your life will work. You will try and try and still not see results. You will then just abandon your dreams and look for something less frustrating or challenging to do. You are being victimized by your own thoughts, your own wrong doing. No one else is to blame. When something doesn't work, you need to tweak it a little bit, try different options, different approaches until you get the outcome you are looking for. Now not everything will work the way you want, even if you use every single options imaginable, but as long as you tried everything, you will never know and live life with regrets. Believe me, this is not the way to live your life.

One Day Or Day One You Decide

One day or day one, you decide. You desire great things in your life, yet you are wasting time in not chasing after them. At some point, you are fed up, make another commitment to yourself, but still do not follow through. You have many wishful thoughts, but you keep hesitating. So what is the answer?
Are you doing the things you should do to get where you want to be? Do you wait for the time to be right? What dream or vision do you want to turn into reality? Are you practicing self-discipline in your life? Do you want to win?

Numerous people want so much, yet, do very little. It is fascinating to see society walking around with tons of dreams, objectives and hopeful thinking, but just not going for it. You know you have to do it. And for some reason, it is difficult to decide and gather the willpower to simply get started.

But I believe that anyone can do anything. You merely have to decide and figure things out, no matter the time it takes. Never stop no matter how slow you move. Young people are being raised in a generation of people that come up with every excuse in the book as to why they are not winning.

The Decision to Get Started
Yes, getting started is hard. The secret to decide, begin and maintain momentum lies in learning. Success is eighty percent psychological and twenty percent mechanical. Most people live in their heads. They have their dreams and their goals. Many get pumped up at first but then, get fearful about what could happen and in the end, do not execute.

You have to unchain your mind. In life, there are losers and people who have not learned how to win. Losers have usually become good at quitting. Those who have not learned may have got really comfortable about ending the race before the finish line.

You have your reasons for not finishing something, and I have mine too. But right now, as you read this, my question to you is: "What do you decide, is it one day or day one?"

Decide - One Day or Day One
A new mindset and new habits require tremendous self-will. You may never feel like starting, and you might not ever be ready, but there is no right time. So if you decide that this is day one, then suck it up, give yourself a push and get on with it. Once you start, you need to maintain momentum.

How many times people make promises to themselves. But then, time passes by, and everything remains the same. The promised resolution has not begun. The dream is not yet realized. Many are trapped on "one day" and overlook that any time could be "day one." You are the only person in charge of the decision you need in your life.

Therefore, it is lack of attitude and commitment to the dreams and goals ahead of us. Most people have so little discipline while others have no idea where to begin. The truth is, if you want something, you have to decide to make it happen. It might take time to get there, but, with focus, sooner or later, you will reach success.

Decide on Being Self-Disciplined
Self-discipline separates people from success and the unsuccessful. I have never met a person who is not successful that did not have a considerable amount of discipline within their life. Self-discipline is being able to perform, keep your life on schedule, cling to commitments, promises and meet deadlines. It is essential to success.

Therefore, it is waking up early and going to bed late and grinding out every second in between. And you have to decide to do it every single day, including weekends. If you want to be successful, have an abundant life, possess freedom and get time with family, have choices and do what you want, you have to get discipline.

Remember when you were a child and decided to set dreams for yourself. They were big, huge, and even giant. These goals had nothing to do with reason. But then you forgot them, difficulties got in the way, or you made the decision they were impossible to reach.

Decide what Type of Person to Be
The reason is that someone close said that your dreams were too unrealistic. They said you should keep your feet on the ground and get lower goals. You decide they might be right. But then forty years pass and you end up with nothing.

And it is indeed not anything that is corresponding to your potential. None of us can afford to have a life that is controlled by someone else. Or be controlled by our emotions. I learned many years ago that there are two kinds of people.

The first type says "I am going to wait until I feel like it or when the time is right before I do it." And then there is the other type that says: "I decide I have to do it so that I may be successful." One will never get anything done because they still waiting for the feel or the time to be right. And the others who decide to move have the realization that they begin to feel the moment.

Decide to Unchain Your Mind
Most people have strategies available. They can get or create them, yet something always gets in the way. These people have a story why it is not working. The story is that they have tried everything. But if you tried every single thing, you would be successful.

So, you have to decide to unchain your mind from the limitations and embrace the truth of your unlimited capacity. And you will see the game-changing. Many individuals, when making a change, are often trying to improve their lives by ten percent. They only work to increase things by small increments.

But the fact of the matter is that there are those in the world that goes ten times bigger. And you can decide to do it also, as anyone can. It is your responsibility to fulfill your potential, and when you think about it, that is what success is actually.

Decide to Be Hungry for More
You have to decide to get very hungry for the things you want in your life. Know that when you are so hungry, so eager, your brain starts coming up with answers. And then you have to take massive action with efficient execution which you can model off successful people.

Thus, find the best examples to compress the time you need to create success. So that, what someone else takes twenty years to figure out, you do it in three years or even one. And yet, if you have no idea how to solve it, or how to get there, you might be amazed at what you can do or come up with.

What is interesting is that your past anchors place you to where you are today. So, you have to let go of the stuff of your past and the infrastructure that you built to be free. You are not your feelings or your patterns. They are just things you are identifying, so when a habit does not work, just decide to replace it with a better one.

Decide to Have No Regrets
Most of the close people will always tell us not start a business or to get involved in some crazy dream. But to succeed, you have to decide to take a chance. If you are to listen to others, you would not do anything. Not everyone has the willpower to achieve their dreams.

If you feel like you have to do things which seem impossible or unrealistic to other people, decide to do them anyway. Better to try and fail than never have tried at all. Do not be concerned about the opinion of others; they are only opinions, not facts.

However, regrets are much scarier than failure. You do not want to sit there at seventy-five, and say "I wish I did." So many people are talking about how big they are going to be or what they are going to achieve, and yet they do not work on weekends.

Decide to Read More
You have to make a schedule and stick to it. Stop changing your path or giving up when things do not work right away. You are what you consistently do. If you look at your calendar, you can see what you do on a regular basis. And that is what is going to determine your future path.

If you want to be in the game and be successful, decide to read more. The average person reads only one book a year. Most successful people read four to five books a month which is sixty books a year. You have to immerse yourself in books, audio, and video daily.

So, you have to hit all three of those. Decide to read, listen and watch something. These are entirely different ways to learn. Find videos that are good for you. As you work hard, get totally focused, and execute what works, you will be successful.

Decide to Be Successful
There is a science to be successful. It does not matter who you are because as you do certain things, you will have stress. But if you do other things, you will get abundance. There are basics which, if you follow them, you will get where you want. And if you break them, you will pay the price.

Therefore, think and decide what you want different in your life. Consider how you can reach your dreams, goals and how important they are for you. It is the only way for you to start your journey to success.

So decide. Adjust. Grow. Develop. Remember your values, get new habits, and you do not lose yourself along the path to success. Build a life you do not need an escape from. There is no point in wasting time. Do something today that your future self will thank you for. Start today. So let it be day one!

What Should My Vision Board Have on It?

Visual memory is indeed the greatest asset man can have. One might forget what he has read or been told, but will never forget what he has seen.

A vision board works as an effective, practical aid on your path to success in this very regard. However, if you thought that a vision board is just another version of a notice board, you need to think again!

Well, a vision board is a physical manifestation of what you want in life. It is actually akin to translating all your ambitions, goals, fears and apprehensions on to a physical platform. The key purpose of this exercise is to keep you focused on your track and help avoid any distractions therein.

For this purpose, we list down a quick checklist of what all your vision board should ideally carry for it to fully solve its purpose.

1. Specific goals and targets

Any goal you list on your board needs to be specific its timeline and requirements. Vague goals never lead to effective results.

2. Recent setbacks and reasons

Though negativity is harmful, yet it always helps to learn from your mistakes and errors of the past. A vision board should ideally help you to keep an eye on your weaknesses so that you do not lose out because of them again.

3. Key tools and supports systems

As you face your daily struggles of life, it is comforting to have a sight of your support system and comfort zones. List down what all makes you feel comfortable and motivated enough to stay on your track. This will give you strength and solace in times of hardships and will help you move on.

A vision board can be a highly effective tool if one makes an earnest effort to bring out the best from it, with the strongest of focus and will power.

As soon as a negative belief starts to rear its ugly head, it is important to realize that it is coming from a place of fear. At that point, you can quickly replace it with a positive thought.

2. Rich people watch whom they spend their time with. The wealthy spend their time with battery chargers, not battery suckers. Poor people have poor people for friends and rich people hang out with intellectual people who are similar to them or even more successful. Their relationships have a give-and-take balance to it. They stay away from takers.

3. They control what goes into their body and their mind. Garbage in and garbage out. Rich people know that what goes in their mind and body, is reflected on their outside world. They only listen to positive and uplifting information and take care of themselves. Stay away from people who tell you that your idea or success can't be achieved because you don't have enough money, education or talent. Listening to those people and believing what they say can quickly crush your dreams.

4. Rich people are optimistic most of the time. The wealthy understand that a positive mindset is the cornerstone to success. They look at the cup half full instead of half empty and realize that as soon as they allow themselves to focus on the negative, things start to take a turn for the worse. Most of us are conditioned to focus on the negative and we can never get ahead when we are focused on what we don't have.

5. Rich people rarely complain. Once again, this has to do with focusing on what the rich do have as opposed to their lack. When we send out a vibration of misery, we only attract more misery. The wealthy know this and for the most part continue to stay in a state of gratitude.

6. Rich people are virtually excuse-free. One of the key secrets of the wealthy is that they take responsibility for their lives as opposed to placing blame and making excuses. If something is not going right, they take the bull by the horns and make the changes necessary to improve the situation. Most of us stay stuck because we are so busy making excuses and placing blame on others or outside circumstance for our current situation. With this mindset, we can never get ahead.

7. Rich people respect money as a tool. The wealthy look at money as a tool not the end-all for their happiness. They realize that they have power over money, which is in opposition to how most of us think i.e., money controls us. The poor give money all the power and allow it to control their lives. Money is just a tool to assist us in getting what we want in life - as are other people, information and resources.

Footsteps Along the Path to Success

You can learn a lot about life by hiking in the mountains. I recently hiked the Blanch Lake trail in the rugged Twin Peak wilderness area. Blanch lake is a small lake that sits between two high mountain peaks at about 9000 feet. The path begins as an easy, relatively flat stroll through a beautiful pine forest. After about 10 minutes, however, it turns right and heads up a narrow, steep canyon just under 3 miles to the lake. The trail is steep and rocky, rising over 2700 feet.
As I hiked up the path, I was struck with the many similarities between a mountain hike and our journey to success. Here are a few simple lessons we can learn:
Plan ahead. When you are on a trail, you become more conscious of your footing. I noticed that my eyes typically rested at a point in the trail about 13 steps ahead of my feet. In other words, my eyes viewed the terrain ahead and sent signals to my brain telling my feet exactly where to step for the next 13 steps! I was amazed that my brain could keep track of so much information and future planning, without taking a misstep. Your brain is your most valuable asset. You can use it to look ahead and plan your goals and activities much farther in the future than you might think.
When you encounter obstacles, pay attention and adjust. When the trail became steep and rocky, my eyes focused much closer, 3 or 4 steps ahead. Sometimes I had to stop altogether to make sure I was on the right path, or to climb over a large bolder. Similarly, on our path to success, we will encounter obstacles. This is the time to pay close attention to what we are doing and make adjustments when necessary. Your finest moments will probably not happen when things are sailing smoothly, but when you appropriately handle a difficult challenge.
Goals keep you going when you’re tired. Near the top of my journey, I began breathing harder and harder as the altitude and strain began to get the better of me. I noticed that my rest stops became more frequent and many times I considered turning around and calling it a day. But I kept thinking about the lake. I had never seen Blanch lake and I was anticipating a spectacular view at the top. I had also told several others that I was hiking to Blanch lake. I couldn’t imagine facing them and admitting that I had turned around without seeing the lake. So I kept moving until I reached the top. That is the power of a well-set goal. It keeps you going when you want to quit.
Everyone moves at their own pace. Several times on the trail, I passed people who were moving more slowly. Others, who hiked much more rapidly than I, passed me. But, ALL of those who persisted, fast or slow, eventually reached the top. So it is in life: our speed is not as important as our direction.
You reach your objective by taking one step after another.  After enjoying the beautiful lake and magnificent vista at the top, I began my decent. I could see the end of the canyon far below, and was amazed at how far and high I had travelled to arrive at my destination. How had I accomplished such an amazing feat, I asked myself. The answer, of course, is: one step at a time. That is how anything worthwhile in life is accomplished. Often we become daunted by the enormity of the task at hand. Forget about that and just take a step, and then another. Just keep moving and, before you know it, you will look back and be amazed at your progress.
