You Can Choose

Often, I hear individuals complain about a situation in life that they do not like. It might involve their relationships, career, finances or perhaps events occurring in various places throughout the world. They seem to think that talking about how they are suffering will make things better. It won't!

If you are struggling, there are things that you can do. Here are your choices:

  1. Protect yourself from information involving world catastrophes - If you are anxious about weather systems or traumatic events that are happening in other locations you would probably be wise to turn off the television and internet. There isn't anything that you can do about these things and filling your mind with doom and gloom with just negatively impacts your well-being.
  2. Wallow in your personal misery - If you want to just sit and commiserate without taking action, chances are that nothing will get resolved. Fretting about family conflict, finances or your career could end up causing you both physical and mental pain. I remember a children's book that I would read to my children when they were young. One of the main characters was Fred Flintstone. He was trying to help an acquaintance who was always miserable. At the end of the story Fred came to the conclusion that some people just aren't happy unless they are miserable! Hopefully that won't be you!
  3. Do nothing about the problem but change your attitude - Perhaps you are not prepared to take action but can learn to accept the problems without angst. Many people put one foot in front of the other for years and years in jobs that they do not love. They won't consider making a change but continue on without complaint because they feel that they are receiving financial benefits and don't have better options. Others stay in relationships where they aren't happy but honour the commitment they made to stay married without complaining aloud.
  4. Research and form a plan to create change - Perhaps you need to speak with someone who has expertise in the area where you are struggling. Reaching out to an objective party could be exactly the thing that will help you deal with the problems you have been experiencing. Maybe you will enroll in an education program, work with a financial planner or discuss your psychological problems with a therapist. Gathering information will give you a much broader perspective.
  5. Make change happen! The day that you begin to take action, things begin to change. That doesn't mean that everything will immediately be perfect but the chances of coming to a better place in life are optimized. One step at a time you will begin to notice things. Adopting a new menu will lead to your clothes fitting better. Spending less than you earn will quickly begin a path to financial health. Cleaning one drawer will begin a process for organizing your life!
You can choose what your future will look like. Which of the above choices will you make?

How to Boost Your Self-Esteem When You're Having a Bad Day

What is it about a bad day that can take the wind out of your sails and make you feel so drained?

Your mindset controls your moods and hence your level of energy. How a bad day is labeled as 'bad' - is completely due to your internal language. Bad days often begin with things happening that were not expected (for instance, missing a train, breaking a bag, misplacing keys) and these things can create a mindset that things are not going to go well today. As you focus on all the things that begin to go wrong, your level of agitation and frustration rises and this drains your energy. In addition your internal language becomes more negative and self critical - which can result in further energy depletion and even depression.

Some of the common symptoms after a bad day

Do you ever feel drained, hopeless, or unmotivated? One of the common emotional responses to a bad day are feelings of hopelessness. One of the most common thoughts are that nothing is going to go right. Poor motivation then sets in because you feel you have been kicked whilst trying to get up and hence self protection sets in - to avoid further disappointment.

Someone with a higher self-esteem will see the bad day for what it is - just a bad day where things didn't go their way. However, with less resilience many people start to feel defeated as a result of a negative series of events and subsequently need something good to occur to shake them out of their negative mindset. An example of this might be, that whilst travelling on the train that was running late, a little toddler begins to laugh so loudly, you can't help but start laughing too.

So what are your fun and helpful tips you could use to rebound after a bad day?

One of the easiest and most simple things you can do to shake off your bad mood, is to try to find the ridiculous humour in the day. Find ways to laugh at how crazy the series of events have been and try to find the funny side if possible. If the day has been particularly bad, remind yourself that every day offers the opportunity for a new beginning. Remember to focus on what went right today.

It's often easy to see things through a negative filter and to assume nothing went right. However, this is rarely accurate. By putting the day into perspective and reminding yourself that you can always make things better, you can let the bad day go and start fresh tomorrow. The key is to regain control of your thinking patterns, so that you feel hopeful and in control on your day ahead once more.

Share Your Talent With the World

Share your talent with the world. Don't be timid or selfish. Be bold and daring with your talent--all of it.

Fear is a threshold you must overcome. We need your talent in the world, now. Why are you stalling?

We depreciate ourselves during our creative process; yes, we all go through this sporadically while we are developing our dreams into reality.

Artists, writers, photographers, authors, speakers, farmers, business owners, musicians, scientists, gardeners, dancers, singers, actors, chefs, athletes, filmmakers, comedians, and in every field people are striving to make things better, to find an improvement, to make things unique, to change outcomes, to offer loftier products and services, and to turn the world into a more hopeful place.

In addition, everyone has a level of doubt about his or her work at times.

Writers, poets, and authors do not stop writing because previous talented authors such as Jack London (journalist and author), William Wordsworth (English poet), and Henry David Thoreau (author), were already discovered.

Artists and photographers do not put away their tools because Frederic Edwin Church (Hudson River School artist), and Ansel Adams (photographer), were already well-known as the pinnacle in their field of expertise.

Athletes train to exceed the current standard of performance and to surpass their own as we noticed with sisters Venus and Serena Williams, both ranked number one during their tennis careers at times.

Michelangelo did not begin painting the Sistine Chapel on his primary attempt; he had a lifetime of artistic skills developed through commissioned work he produced over his career.

Yes, superstars are intimidating; they set the gold standard in their industry for all of us to challenge ourselves and one another in becoming a sterling example of creativity and proficiency in our field.

On occasion, some people seem to have genes that come with a high level of expertise and skills already built-in, a prodigy or teens with awesome talent. Generally, this is not the course of progress.

The reality is once you master one level of skills in your field, you long for a greater level and a more proficient way to perform. Goals are reachable, then we struggle to attain and achieve even more. A level of enthusiasm and momentum grows with each success.

Once we build a foundation, a level of confidence develops through 'wins' both minimal and great.

Do not hesitate to create your ideas. The time is now. You will change the world in a positive form that is unique with your creative viewpoint. Share your talent with the world - all of it; we are awaiting your creative ideas to make the world a more hopeful place.

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, then go, and do that. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive." --Howard Thurman.

Change Your Attitude to Change Your Life

Have you ever known a time in your life when a bad attitude helped you with what you were dealing with? How about someone else you've known who walked around with that cloud over their head, expecting life to rain on them at any moment? Did their bad attitude fight off the storm?
Personally, I can't think of any time in my past when my bad attitude solved any problem or concern I was facing. If anything, the attitude I carried brought on more misery, and a lack of clear thought that could have helped me make things better.

Having a bad attitude affected my self-esteem, my decisions, and my choices in life. Negativity made me fear life and what was ahead of me in the future. Somehow, some way, my attitude changed, due to my marriage, the birth of my daughter; and the death of my only brother, among other life experiences.

I got to the point in life where I'd say to myself, "This isn't a dress rehearsal, kiddo. This is life. If you're going to live it, you might as well live it well." So I chose a new perspective. It worked for me. I'm not afraid of what lies ahead anymore, and I face life with an "active pessimist" attitude. I may complain, criticize and get ticked off about stuff that happens, but then I take action and do something about it (if I can). Sometimes there's nothing I can do except let the storm ride out.

I'm sure you've seen those people who constantly complain about getting older, who feed into the old-age stereotypes, and who use age as an excuse to let their bodies and minds go to waste. I've seen it myself, in people decades younger than me. What a terrible way to age!

Vital aging requires an empowered attitude.

I didn't just pull that belief off the top of my head. Aging experts and researchers have shown that a person's attitude affects their aging process. Many studies have shown that:
• Older people who believe in positive aging stereotypes live longer than those who believed in negative stereotypes.
• Older people with a positive attitude take better care of themselves, and may recover from illness/injury faster.
• Older people who stay engaged in life (e.g., with lifelong learning) have a higher quality of life than those who don't.
• Often, older people are happier than younger adults. (Face it, we know we have less time on this earth, so it's important to make the most of it!)

Why "get" older when you can "grow" older? When you reach the age of 40, or 50, let go of the "over the hill" thinking. Start climbing again. There are new hills to challenge you. Change your perspective. Let go of those stereotypes. Quit complaining. Make physical and mental fitness a priority. Fight ageism. Stay connected. Laugh out loud. Remain flexible. Keep learning. Take charge of your life.
