Facing Consequences

Sir Isaac Newton was a scientist who studied motion. His third law states: "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". Simply put, this means that in every interaction there are two forces at play. The size of the force on the first object equals the size of the force on the second object. Big action, big results.

Now that might seem complex but all it really means is that we will face consequences - positive or negative - depending on our actions.

For example, debt and payment of debt interact. When you make a payment on your credit card, the balance owed will be reduced. The bigger the payment, the less debt you will have left. Ignoring or not making the minimum payment will cause you to be penalized and lose respect from the credit card company and others who might otherwise finance you.

Studying and learning skills usually interact with the workplace by opening the door to better opportunities. The higher the degree, the more you will earn.

But the law also can result in negative consequences. If you drink or use drugs while working in a safety-sensitive job where there is zero tolerance, you will risk your employment status. If you are nasty to your partner over time, you will likely jeopardize your relationship and possibly face divorce. Eating more than you need to function every day will result in being overweight and make you more vulnerable to illness.

I find that often clients don't understand the concept of short-term gain leading to long-term pain. They think that it is acceptable to enjoy the moment without thinking of how that choice might harm their future.

They purchase luxury items on credit that they really can't afford and then have financial pressure when payments are due. They say mean things to their family members when they are hurt thinking that they can pay them back for hurting them. Often this results in them losing support from the partner as well as other family members in the future. They party hard and then lose their driver's license or their job.

So, Newton had an interesting idea about motion that can actually be applied to our everyday life and personal choices. What you do and how strongly you do it, will result in consequences over time.

It's time to get honest with ourselves. Take a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the middle.

In the left-hand column write down positive things that you have been doing which have brought you success. In the right-hand column write the negative choices you have made and the consequences you face because of them.

Now here's the good news. You can start improving your life right now by working on changing the items in the right-hand column. Every day make small changes and soon you will find that you have formed good habits!

Life is choices. Make sure you make good ones!

The World Underneath Your Hat or "What Are You Thinking Underneath That Leopard-Skin, Pill-Box Hat?"

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive peek into the "black box" of the brain. The substrate of our consciousness, including feelings, thoughts and actions, is the neuronal activity within the brain which contains billions of neurons synapsing together. This communication between neurons creates different brain waves as we attend to different aspects of our life.

Sometimes our brain gets trapped in an electrical pattern that causes problems like anxiety, hyperactivity, depression, addiction, and so forth. The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is the center of all other bodily systems so if it isn't working right then other systems reflect it. For instance, you might have stomach aches or insomnia due to the pattern the brain is firing.

These disruptive patterns have arisen from physical or mental abuse, chronic stress, emotional or physical trauma, anxiety and so forth. In response to these stressors the brain adopted a pattern to survive the threats it perceived. This maladaptive pattern presents a host of problems for individuals, but also an opportunity to retrain their brain waves through neurofeedback which uses EEG electrodes to detect the different brain wave patterns.

Slow frequencies, like Delta, range from.5-4 Hertz and are the sleep waves normally present when fully unconscious. An aberrant pattern is finding delta waves in the frontal lobe when you are awake which reflects a person with "brain fog."

Theta waves (4-8 Hz) signify a state just before sleep where thoughts are replaced by visual images. It is called the hypnagogic state and is suitable for hypnosis.

Alpha waves (8-12 Hz) indicate meditative awareness and are concentrated in the right hemisphere which is associated with holistic processing.

LoBeta (12-15 Hz) is an organizing frequency reflecting calm focus, such as a cat watching a gopher hole. Training this frequency gives people a locus of internal control so they can pause before reacting, rethinking their response.

Beta (15-22 Hz) waves predominate in the frontal lobe fostering alertness, computation, language processing, and focusing on details. Higher beta frequencies (23-38 Hz) indicate hyper-vigilance and anxiety due to PTSD, trauma or abuse.

Gamma waves (40 Hz) integrate all parts of the brain in brief flashes of insight.

One type of neurofeedback, called "infraslow," targets frequencies slower than delta. These brainwaves arise from the brain stem and balancing them regulates physiological state through the autonomic nervous system. Sympathetic arousal (fight or flight) dissipates when you balance the infraslow frequencies. Neurophysiologist Stephen Porges notes, "from a parsimonious perspective, the brainstem is a final common pathway through which most information comes into the brain and leaves the brain. It is useful to think of the brainstem as a building block upon which other processes are scaffolded. If we can't regulate physiological state, which is a brainstem responsibility, then we have difficulties accessing and processing higher cognitive functions."

Cherishing the Fact, You're Alive

Preparing to present a devotion at a craft group following a presentation by a funeral director, I decided to run with the flow, and get people engaged in the imminence of their death.

'What do you want said at your funeral?' I asked.

Nothing elicits thought for the transient nature of life more, for me, then the panpipes instrumental, The Lonely Shepherd. Any time I hear this music I instantly think of my death. And such a thought is a blessing.

It is not a morbid thought. It is the thought grounded in the reality that God could remove my breath and stop my heart within a second. Or, cause me to be diagnosed with cancer tomorrow. These are such humbling realities. It puts all our stresses and complexities and conflicts into context.

The question that arises for me out of the thought of my death is, 'Am I cherishing the fact that I'm alive?' Am I holding life lightly? Am I too buried in my work? Am I making enough time for my relationships? - for my wife, my son, my daughters, my parents? What am I putting off that I shouldn't be? Who is it that will really miss me when I'm gone? And am I making time for these people now? Have these people seen the best of me yet? Have I made all efforts to reconcile with those I've aggrieved? Am I making God known? Am I aware of all should be? What should I do before I die?

Have I got any regrets about life? Can I do anything about them? Have I truly accepted the consequences of my actions? Is there joy in my life? What can I do to connect myself to peace, hope and joy?

What am I missing? As opposed to 'What am I missing out on?'

This is the most pulsating fact of life: you and I are alive, for such a time as this, and yet soon it will be over. As we all know, with grandparents and parents having passed away, or those getting ready for such an event, life seems long, but from some viewpoints of irony it is very short indeed.

It isn't a morbid thought to plan for one's funeral; such a thought reminds us how precious life is, and it causes us to cherish the fact that we are alive.

Do You Have The Right Mindset?

I think we can all probably agree that your actions lead to your results. If you want different results, you need to change your actions. If actions lead to your results, what leads to your actions?

Your Big Why

Your big why is, or will be, the most important reason for your success. If you plan to have success, the question that you need to answer for yourself is why do you need the success? What is the reason you get up and get at it each day? What motivates you to accomplish your goals? You need to be very clear on this and focus on it.

My big why has changed a little over the years, but the one that got me going was to help my dad. I lost my mom to cancer when I was really young and my dad raised me and my brother and sister by himself. I have zero complaints about my childhood because he was such a great parent. I owe a lot to him. Being a single parent and one income family, it was difficult for him to even think about his retirement. He was unable to successfully plan for his retirement and is still working today. I want to help him enjoy the latter years of his life and help him, if he would ever allow it, with his retirement.

Fear

I am reading the series Harry Potter right now and I think that is where I heard this quote. "Courage isn't not having fear but is acting in spite of fear." Everyone has fear of the unknown, and taking chances certainly has some unknown results. Fear is the number one career killer, and what separates successful people from average people is acting ANYWAY. This comes back to your big why. Is your big why strong enough to force you to act in spite of your fears? If not, get a new big why, so that fear does not murder your potential.

The Law of Attraction

I am a big, big believer in this. It started with the movie The Secret and has exploded from there. I have studied this and truly believe in its power. If you have no idea what I am talking about, you should start by reading or watching The Secret.

The idea here is that if you can make your mind truly believe something, it will happen. Good ways to use this resource is by affirmations. There are entire books written about how to use affirmations, but you want to put a goal in your mind, like it is already yours, by repeating it to yourself over and over and over... Vision boards are another great way to use the law of attraction. I have vision boards in my house that I look at frequently. These boards are loaded with things that I want. Your goals need to be realistic to you or you will not have much luck convincing yourself that it is yours; so start small and work your way up.

Investment or Expense?

Many people think subconsciously that money they invest in their business (like marketing) or money they spend on themselves (like education) is an expense. What I want you to believe is that these are actually investments. The reason for the distinction is that, investments pay you back with interest and expenses are gone forever. So many small companies end up failing because when things get tight, they cut their marketing budget. If things get tight, they might want to increase their marketing or become more efficient, because that is what brings in the business. Never cut the marking budget, unless you need to slow growth. Cutting that budget can be fatal. As far as investing in yourself, I believe you should continue to educate yourself constantly, but especially when you are not consistently reaching your goals. You should probably consider investing at least 10% of your personal income back into your own education until you are consistently reaching your desired results. With that being said, I am very proud to say that my company offers lots of solid educational opportunities free of charge. Now there really are no excuses.

Fake it Until You Make it

When you are trying to start something new or expand on what you are doing, there is a time in the beginning where you really don't know what you are doing. It is during this time that you are vulnerable, which of course brings fear and can potentially stop your actions. If you fake it and pretend you know exactly what you are doing, you will quickly learn what to do and how to act. That, and your confidence, will attract the people that you need to help you accomplish what you are seeking. I am not saying to lie to anyone, but you can easily lean on others experiences and act with confidence to get the job done. By not faking it, you will have a lot of hesitance and will attract more objections and more things that will hold you back.

The Forces That Shape Us In Reality

Okay, we think that we are in control, we think that we are thinking our own thoughts and taking our own actions. Yet like a tree or plant, our seeds are planted deep in our early reality. Start by thinking about that fact for a moment. This is the key to the real Biblical code of reality or understanding the genuine book of life: Everything is initiated long before we even have any of "our own thoughts or actions" deep in the early realities of existence.

I remember this George Harrison song called "Within You, Without You" that basically said that the more individual you think you are, the less independence you really have. The crux of this reality, and this article is: Everything is preplanned and God planned it all before it all happened, that is why we "do not see or hear God anymore" in our daily reality. So, back to that George Harrison song "Within You, Without You" again and adding the saying "Seek first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all else will be added" with that from most Christian Bible New Testament copies in the world. In my reality, the door to God operates like a "reverse combination lock" where we close the open door when we think or act like we do it, and it opens when we know that God planned it all before it happened.

So, the forces that shape us in reality have already been put in place and act on us all very subtly and within the details of our lives, not in an overt way, but in that subtle way that genuinely directs us when we really think about these forces.

After all, the real hell is not having enough intuition to understand these facts in reality and understand them deeply. The real hell is believing that we are alone without cause and all effect without a cause. The only heaven there is really then is honest understanding in reality. Without that honesty and understanding, there is nothing that counts anyway. Without that honesty and understanding, reality is an empty, Earth bound trap full of pitfalls, frustrations and "what if" fantasies anyway. When the thought that "this is it" is there, realization, enlightenment and all the desired realities will not be there. When the thought that we know everything is there, that is The End, and nothing miraculous, new or better can happen. Genuine honesty and rational open mindedness is the best way to be, otherwise we really are done.

"One thing only I know, and that is that I know nothing." -Socrates of Alopece, Greece (born 470, B.C. - died 399, B.C.), the acknowledged Father of education in the Golden Age of Greece and the kind of spiritually oriented mind that I am writing about in this article!

We All Have Something To Add To This Experience Of Life. What Are You Contributing? (By Tony Fahkry)

For The Greater Good Of Humanity

Are you contributing to this experience called life? Allow me to explain myself better. Contribution requires us being of value and service in some way. It needn't be on a global scale but embodied through your thoughts, actions or non-actions for the betterment of humanity. I've had the privilege of meeting some amazing people over the course of my professional life and I was astonished by their journey. Moreover, their exceptional attitude towards selfless contribution is worthy of mention. Similarly, I've met people who take from society and contribute nothing in return. These are people with little self-awareness and who are narcissistic by nature because they consider themselves the centre of the universe. How about you? Do you contribute to life or are you always trying to get more?

We are here on this planet for a purpose and it doesn't matter whether you're an atheist, a nihilist or a sceptic. The fact you exist at this point in time holds significance to your purpose here. I'm not asking you to believe in religion, a higher power or a greater intelligence, but to consider your presence on earth to be significant otherwise you wouldn't be here. People might argue, there is no reason for their existence because they were conceived without their involvement. However, there are deeper implications for our existence and we ought to appreciate how we can be of value and service in this life. Is this something you've thought about before? Irrespective of your position, could you entertain the idea you are here to contribute to humanity in some form? I realise people assume they must become the next Elon Musk to be of value in the world, however we can still contribute on a smaller scale.

Contribution requires using our inherent skills, passions and attributes for the greater good of humanity. You've heard it said no two people are the same since we are unique in our own special way. Therefore our uniqueness becomes an expression of how we add value to life. This is the essence of what spiritual author Dennis Merritt Jones explains in Your Redefining Moments: Becoming Who You Were Born to Be where he writes: "Every human being's purpose is the same-to bring the deepest part of themselves to the surface and unabashedly share it with the world. The manner in which each one personalizes the gift is their mission-and because there are no two people on the planet alike, nor shall their missions be the same. Your individualized mission is found in whatever you are called to do that honours the giver of the gift in a manner that integrates your authentic self with the doing self."

Are You Living In Harmony With Nature?

I like to think of life as a giant amusement park where we get to ride the rollercoaster as a collective group. It is incumbent upon us to work together throughout the journey where the ride will experience highs and lows, twists and turns and sometimes come to an abrupt stop. If we work against each other, this fuels pain and suffering and we've seen this throughout history and in present times. Some people believe they are more important than others as illustrated through their egoic actions and self-interests, instead of working towards unity and oneness. We see this through governments and politicians who fulfil their own needs before the needs of their constituents and those they serve. This leads to political and societal unrest, for obvious reasons.

We are here to help one another through this experience of life. The irony is that by assisting others, you get what you want. I liken it to riding a seesaw. Without a person on the other side, the ride does not function as it is intended. Yet when two people work together by balancing one another and alternating their roles, the ride functions flawlessly. This is how life works, insofar as helping others get what they want, helps you receive the exchange of your goodness. Through the process of reciprocity what you give out comes back to you multiplied, especially when given with heartfelt kindness and love. Is this an idea you can take on board? I'm not asking you to become Mother Teresa but notice how you contribute to this experience of life. Do you balance your giving and receiving with others?

It's important we be mindful of our place in the universe to bring harmony to our lives and the greater good of others. With this in mind, I'd like you to consider ways in which you can contribute to life. What acts of goodness can you perform in your local community, whether it be through volunteering, helping others or being mindful of what you consume? This is about taking an inventory of our lives to see whether we are living in harmony with nature. If you are unsure how this looks, get out in nature and observe the trees, the ocean, and the sun and notice a state of unconditional giving. Mother Nature constantly gives because we are purely renting space here for a short time and some of us take more than we pay rent for. So it is natural we give back in the smallest way to help enrich the lives of our fellow human beings. As St Francis of Assisi once said: "For it is in giving that we receive."

Your Self-Talk And Mental Picture Determines The Level Of Dedication To Your Actions

Develop A New Consciousness And Awareness

What is the predominant self-talk that takes place in your mind? Is it affirmative or a disempowering voice that tries to convince you the world is a dark and scary place? It's easy to get pulled into this narrative because the voices are real and so we conclude they must be true. Or are they? I often use an exercise in seminars where I ask participants to tell me what they will think next. I explain, if they identify with their thoughts, surely they must know what their next thought will be. Unless there are psychics in the audience, rarely do people know what their next thought will be until it occurs. The point is: thoughts come and go from our minds and unless we give them meaning, they have little power in and of themselves.

So let's return to your self-talk. You might be accustomed to listening to the voice in your head, that perhaps you're no longer aware of the negative thoughts? Yet, that is what we must pay attention to if we want to change our circumstances. It's said: thoughts become things, meaning everything in the physical universe begins with a thought. The house or the apartment you live in exists because an architect had an idea for the design of the building. Your smartphone, laptop or computer, began its life with a thought. The point I wish to emphasise is: our reality is the result of our thinking, whether it be positive or negative. When negative circumstances show up, they merely shine the light on the truthfulness of our thoughts.

For example, consider a current problem in your life you want to improve. Do you believe there's a solution you haven't discovered yet? I'm hoping you will realise that the nature of your problem results from your thinking alone. This doesn't mean your thinking is flawed, it means you have directed your thoughts, whether conscious or unconscious to something unwanted and it has manifested as a result. Do you agree, if we want a different outcome, we must change our thoughts or at least our perception of the problem? It was Albert Einstein who once said: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." Put simply: We must develop a new consciousness and awareness in which to perceive our problems from a higher level. The same consciousness cannot solve the problems created with our current level of thinking.

Awareness Shines The Light On Our Thoughts

How does this relate to your self-talk or mental picture influencing your actions? If we replay the same script and visualise it through the lens of negativity, it must eventually manifest in our life. We agreed earlier that thoughts become things. What we think about and give our attention to, must it show up in our reality? I'm not talking about the law of attraction but universal laws that govern the framework of reality. The Hermetic aphorism states: "As within so without." Meaning, what happens at the level of thoughts is reflected in our reality. When we combine self-talk with a mental picture, we add colour to what appears in our life. We define it and give it energy, irrespective of whether it is a negative thought or a positive one. This is an idea the motivational psychologist and author Dr. Shad Helmstetter emphasises in What To Say When You Talk To Your Self when he says: "Self-Talk is a way to override our past negative programming by erasing or replacing it with conscious, positive new directions. Self-Talk is a practical way to live our lives by active intent rather than by passive acceptance."

People often ask: Does it mean I need to be attentive to every thought? No, since that requires a lot of mental energy best devoted to other things. The key is to observe our thoughts with an expanded awareness instead of remaining unconscious to them. Awareness is the key that unlocks us from the prison of negativity and self-destruction. It is the key to inner peace and freedom because it is the filter for our thoughts. Awareness shines the light on the congruency of our thoughts. If we wish to change our external conditions, being aware of what we think is the first step. I often use the example of a ship changing course midway through its journey in the ocean. First, the captain must change course and map new coordinates and relay this information to his crew. The same is true of ourselves: our awareness shines the light on our inner self-talk and mental picture. If we wish to change our future, it must begin by observing our mind and becoming conscious of our unconscious thoughts. It is only then, the level of dedication to our actions become congruent with a shift in awareness.

The Law of Attraction in Recovery From Alcoholism

You will always find exactly what you're looking for, this is an age-old truth. It still surprises me when I discover how many people don't realize this truth. To recover from alcoholism, which is my primary focus in the recovery community, I always start in the mind. Thoughts lead to feelings, which lead to actions, which lead to results.

So the question is; what are you looking for? Or may I phrase that a different way; what is it that you WANT? You see, wanting is the beginning of deliberate creating, and until you want something, you'll never have it. That being the case, if what you want is not currently present in your life, you must look inward and examine your thoughts.

Our minds are sending and receiving stations. All attraction begins with you. Therefore you must focus on what you want, not on what you need. Because, when you focus on what you need, you're actually focusing on the lack of what you want, thereby attracting more lack (of what you really want).

You must continually seek that which you desire. Every day, every morning, from your bed upon awakening, throughout the day, until again you find it's the end of the day, and your head is back on the pillow. You must continually seek that which you desire. When you do this, a vibrational harmonic frequency will begin to resonate out into the Universe, and all that is in alignment with that frequency, all things that resonate vibrationally with your desires, that resonate with what you want, they will begin to appear in your life. Not just things either, but thoughts and ideas, concepts from Creative Intelligence, they will begin to appear in your mind in the form of inspiration, excitement, and motivation. Things you've watched others attempt, and up until now you've never even dared to think about... but now you want to try them for yourself.

Soon, opportunities will begin to present themselves. New and different people will show up around you. Situations that used to baffle you will suddenly begin to resolve themselves with grace and ease. You will find yourself where you want to be, and becoming who you want to be, more and more each day. This is the way of things, it is Universal Law. It cannot not happen.

Then, it's simply a choice, not a struggle. I have many years of personal experience with these matters, in life generally, and in recovery specifically. When all you desire is recovery from alcoholism, and that becomes a burning desire, and it consumes you every day with a passion that surpasses all others, then it is an outcome with an imminent arrival. Be present; remain open; and trust your Intuitive Wisdom.

Beliefs Drive Our Actions (By Linda Hancock)

Sometimes people tell me how much they dislike Medicine Hat. They criticize the way the streets are laid out and find them confusing. They describe the river as "muddy" and the people as unfriendly. Others sing praises about our city. They like the unique layout, the fact that we have a river running through the middle of the community and describe the people as being kind and welcoming. Perceptions form beliefs and beliefs drive our actions.

Recently I have been making another attempt at fluency in the French language. I took classes in high school and again a few years ago with a group of "mature" students but never got to the level that I desired. I have also used a couple of apps, hired a private tutor and made some feeble attempts to greet the two francophones that I have met but still struggle. My vocabulary is fairly good, and I can read French quite well but frankly, my pronunciation sucks!

Last week, however, I was able to connect with a wonderful European French teacher who uses his study of psychological concepts to tutor individuals who have been "stuck" with the same disappointing progress that I have had.

It only took one class with this man to realize that the strategy he employs has exactly the same foundation as the ones I use in my private practice!

People who cannot speak French fluently (or any other second language) tend to believe that they will be embarrassed if they take the risk of trying to have a conversation. Their belief is that they will offend, not be understood or look foolish and this prevents them from trying. They focus on the things that do not improve their speaking skills - like reading, doing quizzes and studying at a theoretical level. They progress on paper but, at the same time, they believe that they will not be able to speak fluently in the timeframe that they desire.

Academic programs tend to teach vocabulary and grammatical structures that can feel overwhelming, especially when you might only need a few words and phrases to communicate about the things that interest you.

Clients often face the same challenges. They are "stuck" in a situation where they feel embarrassed, inadequate or frustrated. They come for help but often have already decided that they will not succeed. Failed attempts to change have not only affected their confidence but also strengthened their belief that things will not get better.

There is an old adage that states "Practice makes perfect". But practice takes time, involves making mistakes and presents risks that not everyone is willing to take.

What are the beliefs that are holding you back from doing something that you really want to do? Are you afraid that you cannot find a good friend or partner? Are you worried that you might not do well in a new job or academic program? Are you holding back from improving your health or financial situation because you don't believe you will succeed?

This week write a list of beliefs that are limiting your progress. Then write a list of things that you have accomplished in the past. Build up your belief and then start taking action towards your goal. One step at a time. One day at a time.

And remember to help those around you to think positively and build their belief levels and confidence through your encouragement and example.

Bonne chance!

How To Refute Irrational Ideas That Stress You Out

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the same event is stressful and sometimes it's not? Or maybe there's something that just drives you crazy, while your spouse, friend, or co-worker seems unaffected-or even thinks it's funny?

What is it that makes something stressful for you or not? Is there some variable that makes all the difference?

In the 1960s, psychologist Albert Ellis developed "Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy" when he recognized the strong link between how we interpret events and the emotions and behaviors that result.

Most significantly, he noticed that "Between the event and the emotion is realistic or unrealistic self-talk. The self-talk produces the emotions. Your own thoughts, directed and controlled by you, are what create anxiety, anger, and depression." (p.136, "The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook," by Martha Davis, Ph.D., Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman, MSW, and Matthew McKay, Ph.D.)

Taking it one step further to complete the chain, your emotions then determine your actions.

So, the causal chain goes like this: activating events, interpretation (thoughts, self-talk), emotions, and behavior. This becomes a feedback loop in which all of the above (event, thought, feeling, behavior) are linked together. Once this pattern is encoded in your body and brain it becomes easy to trigger.

For example, you might be faced with a challenging task at work or in a family relationship which you interpret through the lens of a past failure in a similar situation. This makes you feel hopeless, so you withdraw from the situation to avoid feeling bad again.

Ellis identified 10 common irrational beliefs that launch us into stressful feelings which result in poor coping behaviors.

10 Irrational Beliefs

1. It's essential to have love and approval for me to feel good.

2. I must be unfailingly competent, successful, and perfect to deserve good things.

3. Certain people are evil and should be punished.

4. It's horrible when things don't turn out the way I want them to.

5. External events cause human suffering.

6. The unknown is dangerous and scary.

7. It's easier to avoid difficulties than face them head on.

8. I need a higher authority to validate my judgments and actions.

9. The past determines the present.

10. Happiness comes from endless leisure and relaxation.

These are just a sampling of the irrational ideas that produce crippling feelings and behaviors. It's not that there is no truth in them. It's how we use them against ourselves that is decisive.

At the heart of these beliefs is the assumption that "things are done to me" or that "I am a victim of circumstances beyond my control." That disempowered way of thinking lies at the core of the stress we feel.

Ellis discovered that, if you can refute your irrational ideas, you can interrupt the chain of reaction, and create a new outcome. If you reframe your thinking, you will feel and act differently. By doing this, you become stress resistant and stress resilient.

Ellis suggested five steps:

5 Steps to Refute Irrational Ideas

1. Write down the objective facts at the time you become upset. Try to describe "what happened" without writing a big story around it. For example, "Bob criticized my report and I walked out of the meeting."

2. Write down any self-talk about the event. This is the story you are telling about what happened, including any value judgments, beliefs, predictions about what it means for you, and worries, such as "I'll never be good at this," "I don't deserve a raise, unless I'm perfect," or "If they don't like me, I'll lose my job."

3. Write down your dominant emotional response, such as "I feel angry, afraid, anxious, sad, depressed, worthless, and so on.

4. Dispute the irrational ideas identified in Step 2. Do this one idea at a time. First, identify the idea or belief in your inner self-talk, such as "I'll never be good at this."
Then, ask yourself what evidence supports that belief. For example, remember times when you failed in the past in similar situations.

Next, ask yourself what evidence is against this belief? Find exceptions or remember times when the opposite was true.

In this example, you could find evidence for the opposite idea that "I can get good at this." Remember times when you used criticism as constructive feedback that helped you improve what you were doing.

Seeing both sides of an irrational belief supports the insight that there are alternative interpretations you can choose from. Which leads to the final step.

5. Substitute alternative self-talk that is more realistic, positive, empowering, and productive.

For example, "I can use this criticism as feedback to get better at what I am doing. This person did me a favor by pointing out shortcomings in what I was doing. Without that feedback, I wouldn't have known how to improve. This is the best thing that could have happened."

Can you see the transformative power in this process?

I've used this strategy many times with great success. However, in my experience, there's one preliminary step missing here-a step can make all the difference!

Sometimes you are so wound up in your stress that you just can't seem to step back and go through this kind of rational process. You need to first take the edge off the stress you feel. You need to activate your body's natural relaxation response.

So, what helps you release stress in the heat of the moment? Is it taking a walk, a few deep breaths, a little meditation, or a workout at the gym?

Once you've done that, you can revisit the situation from a much clearer state. Then, you can use the steps above and truly change how you are relating to that situation.

Enjoy your practice!

A Major Cause of Stress

Stress Symptoms, Signs, and Causes - HelpGuide.org

Discover that stress is NOT being caused primarily by people or situations, but by your own thoughts and actions.

We tend to think of stress as something that occurs because of outside events, such as having financial problems, relationship problems, health problems, or from having too much to do. Certainly events such as these are challenging, but they are not the actual cause of stressful feelings.

Stress Is An Important Message

Stress is your inner guidance's way of letting you know that you are thinking thoughts or taking actions that are out of alignment with what is in your highest good, or that you are trying to control something that you cannot control - such as how people feel about you or the outcome of things. Stress may also be letting you know that something in your body is out of whack - you are on medications or substances that are affecting your brain and causing the stress, or you have eaten foods such as sugar, processed, or pesticide-laden food that is causing brain toxicity, leading to feeling stressed.

When you are operating from your wounded self and trying to control something over which you have no control - such as others' feelings and the outcome of things - your stress is letting you know that you are hitting your head against a wall and not accepting reality. The opposite of stress - inner peace - is the result of accepting what is, learning to take loving care of ourselves in the face of what is, and practicing gratitude for the big and small blessings on this incredible journey of life - even in the face of all the challenges. And as many of us have experienced, gratitude offers us a stress-free way to manifest what we want, and works far better than trying to control others and outcomes,

Beyond Stress

Wallace Wattles, the author of the 110-year old book, "The Science of Getting Rich," states that "Man [and woman] may come into full harmony with the Formless Substance [this is what he calls God] by entertaining a lively and sincere gratitude for the blessings it bestows upon him [and her]. Gratitude unifies the mind of man [and woman] with the intelligence of Substance, so that man's [and woman's] thoughts are received by the Formless Intelligence through a deep and continuous feeling of gratitude." He states that when you frequently contemplate the mental image of what you want, "coupled with unwavering faith and devout gratitude," you set in motion the creative forces of manifestation.

Your stress is letting you know that you are doing the opposite of this - you are using your thoughts to create what you don't want and to try to control others and outcomes rather than to co-create with Spirit.

The major challenge here is about being in faith that all of this is true. You might know that this is true from the perspective of your loving adult, but your wounded self likely doesn't believe it. It is very easy for the wounded self to come in with thoughts of bad things happening, which moves you out of faith and gratitude and into stress. It is very easy for the wounded self to focus on how to try to have control over others and outcomes, which will always create stress. It is very easy for the wounded self to turn to junk food and other substances that bring the body out of balance and cause stress. It is even easy for the wounded self to try to use Inner Work and gratitude as a way of controlling God! It is so important, when opening to learning and moving into Gratitude, to make sure that your intent is to be loving to yourself and others, WITH NO OTHER AGENDA, rather than using Inner Work as just another way to attempt to control others and outcomes.

Stress Is Your Friend

Stress is your friend in that it is instantly letting you know that you are off track in your thinking and/or behavior. Instead of ignoring your stress or pacifying it with various addictions, which will ultimately cause more stress, why not do Inner Work and attend to it with a deep desire to learn about how you are off track?

When you really think about it, it is strange that our society tries so hard to get rid of stress with medications and addictions, instead of learning what it is trying to tell us. When you really get that stress is your guidance's way of telling you that you are "off the mark," (in the original Aramaic Bible, sin is translated as off the mark) in your thinking and/or behavior, you will attend to what you are doing to create it, rather than ignore it or try to get rid of it.

Why Do You Do What You Do?

Person Covering Woman With Blanket

Are you ever been so exasperated with your loved ones, that you ask them: Why? Why did you do that?

The feelings inside you are a mixture of confusion, frustration, and irritation. Because you couldn't find a logical reason as to why they did what they did. Especially when it is something that would inevitably impact you and others,

The thing is, your loved one would have no logical explanation for what they did. By this time, they are filled with regret with no answers, and feeling ashamed (maybe), misunderstood, and alone.

Perhaps there is no logical reason for why we do what we do. Perhaps our why is more an emotional reason that defies logic, our why may not make sense, our why is only something we get, and it makes us impulsive enough to do something that may cause hurt/harm to others.

OR it may give us the drive to keep doing what we want to do because our WHY is just so compelling. Many who have set their hearts to what they wish to do as part of their life mission know their reason WHY, but it is not easy for them to explain it in logical terms to others.

Explaining only makes the WHY sound cheesy, condescending, and almost as if it has lost its significance. For, eg, if someone says, I want to save the world. Their answer may make some people roll their eyes!

But in their hearts of hearts, the person in question does want to save the world, in his or her way! But when verbalised it sounds somewhat lame.

So how do we then express our WHYs?

The simplest way is through our actions. There are way too many people talking about what they want to do, or feeling like they want to do this or that.

The best way to express your WHY is to do it.

I've always found it difficult to share when I'm asked, Why do I do what I do. If I said: "I want to help others", to me, it sounds pretty lame. Everyone is helping someone in one way or another.

If I said: "I was pretty lost at the time when I needed some guidance when I battled with my addictions alone, I felt no one really understood." It sounded like I was blaming the world, and have made myself a victim.

So I have realised that the best way to express my WHY is to simply do it. I show my passion through the different channels of my coaching/healing work. And to support sustainability I've been planting trees for a decade now. Every time someone engages my services, trees are planted!

I believe in leaving people better than when I first met them.

And I also believe in leaving the earth better than when I first arrived, and with things going the way they are on the planet, I'm not sure how things will pan out. So I do what is possible and within my means -- I work with various tree planting organizations!

Why I do what I do can't be fully expressed here, and it is alright.

I urge you to get into action to express your BIG WHY. Don't wait for the perfect time, or the ideal explanation, or the perfect branding etc.

Every minute lost is a minute less for you to BE YOU. So be that WHY!

Refuse to Live a Life Less Than You Deserve!

People Enjoying the Concert

The opportunity to live in purpose has been made available to all of us. But our beliefs, thoughts and actions hold us back. You have the power to make changes that will manifest a better life for you and those you are called to serve. I am a firm believer that we all were created to live a happy, fulfilled and prosperous life emotionally, mentally, spiritually and financially.

Why be satisfied with where you are currently at in life when there is more available to you? And it is not all about having more in the area of finances, but that is a part of it. But what about being satisfied in the areas of your life that are not related to finances? What about being happy with things that money can't buy but are priceless? What about prospering in the area of purpose? What about manifesting an abundance of peace and joy in your life? What about living life everyday knowing that you are living the life you were designed to live? Those things are all priceless and extremely valuable, and can attract things in your life that money could never buy.

It is your moment to begin seeing yourself as the successful person you were born to be. And that means successful on every level mentally, emotionally, spiritually and financially. You already have everything that you need to live the life you desire and deserve to live. You just need to tap into your gifts and talents and activate them. Too many times we go around living a life less than we deserve to live, and once again that just doesn't mean financially. But many times individuals are walking around feeling purpose-less, and that is not rewarding. If you are still breathing then you still have purpose. You have a reason for existing. And your life has meaning.

One of the blessings of life is life. The fact that you woke up this morning is a blessing. And that is regardless of what is going on in your life. You must be aware of the fact that you have so many things to be thankful for. And you can attract and manifest more things to be thankful for. Don't wait until tomorrow. Begin to take steps to be all that you were designed to be today!

Weathering Stormy Feelings

woman in white vest and black bikini with hand on chest

I know looking back on my own life I can see many instances where I spoke or acted on impulse, due to the raging storms of emotion within me. Some very strong feelings are also triggered by our hormones. If we are unable to control these hormonal urges they may drive us to make impulsive decisions on sexual matters. The consequences of these impulsive decisions can be very long lasting in our lives. If we can manage our feelings, and better control our resulting thoughts and actions; we will not have so many occasions to later deeply regret.

A great deal of suffering can be drawn into our lives and the lives of those who live in close proximity with us, due to the way we think, speak and react to our feelings. This effect carries outward into our society like the ripples in a pond, bringing either waves of added suffering, or waves of added benefit to the lives of all those within our sphere of influence. We all interrelate with one another on some level. With the increased connections of the electronic age, and all the social media connections, our impact has a much broader range then was possible in the past.

Due to the fact that how we relate to one another, affects people on a far broader scale today, brings to mind the consideration of our responsibilities to one another. Although we are each responsible for ourselves, and our behavior, we need to keep in mind how the things we say, and the things we do, may influence and affect the lives of those around us. If we continue to react without thinking to our feelings; we will not be able to create the best possible life for ourselves.

We also need to consider how this ripple we start in the pond of our life, by the way we react to our feelings and beliefs, also flows out into the lives of our children and grandchildren. Furthermore how we react to our feelings, can negatively impact the lives of those we interact with, on a daily basis. For these and many other reasons, it is very wise to learn how to better cope with our inner feelings, in order to have the best possible experiences in life.

Our feelings combine with our beliefs about ourselves and others, along with the rules we abide by in our interactions with one another. This powerful mix of feelings and beliefs will influence how we will act in all the situations we find ourselves in. Our personal combination of feelings and beliefs creates our thoughts. Our thoughts carve out the reality we perceive within our life experience. Our life experience flows from this stream of feelings, beliefs, thoughts, words and actions as we create it.

I like how Thich Nhat Hanh describes our feelings, in his book Peace is Every Step. He says, "In us, there is a river of feelings, in which every drop of water is a different feeling, and each feeling relies on all the others for its existence. To observe it, we just sit on the bank of the river and identify each feeling as it surfaces, flows by and disappears."

Thich Nhat Hanh also says that "Mindful observation is based on the principle of "non-duality": our feeling is not separate from us or caused by something outside us; our feeling is us, and for the moment we are that feeling."

He goes on to describe how there are three sorts of feelings, pleasant, unpleasant and neutral. He says we should focus on observing our feelings, with love and attention; while using conscious breathing and mindfulness. This will help us to identify and acknowledge the feeling we are experiencing. If a feeling is unpleasant, we can mindfully embrace our feeling, like a Mother comforting a crying baby. Applying our energy to the feelings in this way, will help us to transform the unpleasant, or stormy feelings into either neutral or pleasant feelings as we practice.

1. The first step in transforming our feelings is to recognize each feeling as it arises.

(Example from Peace is Every Breath) "Breathing in, I know there is an unpleasant feeling in me." "Breathing out, I know there is an unpleasant feeling in me." We want to keep our breathing calm and light so our mind and body can begin to reach the same equilibrium. As we identify the feeling using mindfulness, we can address it by name, such as "anger", "sorrow' or "fear." Do not seek to drive the feeling away, simply acknowledge it. "Hello Fear, (Anger, Sadness) How are you today my friend?"

2. With the second step you will invite your feeling and mindfulness to shake hands and connect with each other.

Allow your mindfulness to greet and care for the stormy unpleasant feeling you are experiencing. As the feelings connect with each other, mindfulness will calm the stormy feeling for you. It may seem frightening at first, but with practice your mindfulness will gain strength and will help you transform these stormy feelings.

3. The third step is to calm the feeling you are experiencing.

"Breathing in, I calm the activities of my body and mind." Again use the visualization of a Mother holding and comforting a crying baby. As the baby feels the tenderness and love of the Mother (your mindful energy) the feeling (baby) will calm down. "Breathing out, I calm my... " (fear, anger, sadness... )

We do not need to bury, reject or drive away our feelings. What we need to do is mindfully and lovingly embraces them. As you lovingly embrace the feeling, with your mindful energy; you will transform the stormy feeling, with your love and compassion, into a more beneficial and pleasant feeling. With this gentle approach we will be able to withstand the storms that pass through the branches of our being. Mindfulness will help us to understand all of our feelings are an important part of us. When we acknowledge and embrace our stormy feelings they can be transformed into positive and beneficial energies. We can then go on to create a happier, more positive and successful life experience for ourselves. This will also benefit all those we hold especially dear.

I strongly suggest reading Thich Nhat Hanh's book, Peace is Every Step, for a more detailed and comprehensive explanation of this wonderful process.

In the Christian tradition the feelings and thoughts we experience are considered in Philippians 4:6-8 as follows. "6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think on these things... "

I think that an attitude of gratitude and a heart filled with thanksgiving along with lips that look for every opportunity to praise; will lift our hearts from many a moment of sorrow or despair. In addition using the mindfulness approach to transform our feelings can be utilized within any faith.

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. Khalil Gibran

When dealing with your feelings, or those of another, consider the words of Jalaluddin Rumi, the thirteenth-century Persian poet. "Listen with ears of tolerance! See through the eyes of compassion! Speak with the language of love."

In summary we all experience a vast array of feelings. Enjoy the pleasant ones; transform the unpleasant stormy feelings by mindfully embracing them. Acknowledge all feelings, for they are a valid of expression of who you are, and what is meaningful to you. Love and accept yourself feelings and all! Seek to better understand why you feel the way you do, and in so doing you will come to better understand both yourself, and the others who are important to you in your life.

Message From the Universe: Actions Speak Louder Than Thoughts

"Hoping, wishing, and praying shouldn't ever be confused with doing.

Know what I mean?

Tallyho,
The Universe"

Great! You've mastered your thoughts, your hopes, your wishes and prayers but that doesn't mean you shouldn't act on them. You've heard of the say: "Actions speaks louder than words" and this one applies to this Message as well. Just thinking about your positive thoughts isn't enough to get the ball rolling. You need to act on it, feel and believe that is yours already but take affirmative action to make things happen the way you anticipated. It will not come easy, that's a fact, and you will fail miserably along the way. My question to you is: Will you let life control you or will it be the opposite? How do you see yourself dealing with the challenges that life will throw at you on a daily basis?

We all have these hopes and dreams that we want to become the best in what we do, the best in our jobs, our family obligations and so on and so forth. You will have to determine if you are willing to put in the effort and the work to make things happen the way you want. It all really depends on you. Everything from this point forward will be within your control. You will need to wake at the crack of dawn to be ahead of the crowd. What others aren't willing to do, you may need to fight through it. The extra hours are a must to your ultimate success. No one will have a gun to your head to do the things you need to do. You are on your own with this one. It may be lonely at times to constantly have your motivation be on high gear but this is what is needed to be where others are very afraid to go. Even though many wishes fortune and glory, most do not know how to handle when it comes. It can be overwhelming to suddenly be in the spotlight and be known worldwide. Be careful what you wish for, as many claims and it is true for most of the time. That shouldn't stop you from gaining advantage among the many others doing the same things as you. Control your own destiny by taking actions and keep the right intentions streaming. Help others do the same as well. Many may not have that same ambition, that same drive, that same desire as you. Be willing to teach so others can relay your accomplishments and succeed. This is how the cycle of life runs.

Message From the Universe: Trust Yourself More Than Anything!

"I'm alright with the concept of Karma as it's generally understood, kind-of, sort-of.

The idea of spiritual contracts is pretty nifty, too. You've always been a wheeler-dealer.

Except, of course, if either were absolute laws, you wouldn't be unlimited.

You truly run this town,
The Universe"

Nothing in this world is absolute. Nothing is guaranteed, or pre-destined to be a certain way. You think and hope of something happening and the total opposite happens. You wonder if your thoughts can actually change your outcome but it doesn't always work that way. When you hear spiritualist or metaphysician discuss with enthusiasm how thoughts becomes the things you want to get in life but in actuality, some events are tweaked in a way that may not always render the expected outcome. There is no need to ponder on how things didn't happen the way you expected and conclude that the Laws of Attraction are just bogus and frivolous laws. You can't act solely on thoughts without putting the belief behind it, as well as actions. They are all inter related and work in synergy. You can't have one without the other. Thoughts in itself won't bring you the things you want in life if you decide NOT to act on them. Your actions will demonstrate your ability to bring these thoughts to reality, but how enthusiastic will you be if you do not believe in what you are doing? You need to trust yourself and listen to your inner voice when it comes to choosing the ideal path you need to take to succeed. Whatever you decide to do, always be ready to fail. You can't go through life wanting ONLY success, because it is through failure that you learn more about mistakes. Success only encourage invincibility, which is not a good spiritual trait, which can lead to bigger problems.

Your mind is extremely powerful and it has the capability to control a lot, but not all, the outcome of your life. If you decide to think negative today, such as you are not good enough, or smart enough, or this or that, these thoughts will manifest themselves a few months down the road, but not immediately. However, you might need a LOT of negative thoughts but just a few positive thoughts to possibly reverse the action of negative outcomes. Focus on the power you hold from within, the power of persuasion, the power of changing your world from within and eventually from without. You can do more than you ever expected but only when you have that belief that you can. Life has a strange way of doing things that you do not expect, but can anticipate. Your inner voice follows the energy signature of the Universe, this massive transmission tower that reveals its secrets for you to understand and apply. So open your eyes and your mind, and allow yourself to believe that you are born with powers that couldn't be explained or defined by anyone. You are the ONLY one who can take advantage of the gift that was given to you.

Message From the Universe: You Are the Dark Matter of Positivism!

Universe, Person, Silhouette, Star, Joy, Hug, Search

"Can you keep a secret?

You know the space between you and all things, the void. Like right now, the space between you and your computer.

That's where I hide... and watch.

Looking to see what your expectations are: of yourself, others, abundance, health, and happiness.

And from this space as I catch your thoughts, hear your words, and see all you do, no matter where we are, I manifest the next moment in time.

Fade out with "I believe in miracles, you sexy thing" by Hot Chocolate -
The Universe"

If you look up in the sky, and stare at the stars, you notice dark material in between the stars, in between the white dot that lightens the sky at night. What can that be? Is it just because it is night that we can see the distance between the stars that is covered by black material? Obviously, during daytime, it can be difficult to notice it. What you see in between stars, planets, and galaxies is what we call DARK MATTER. Why do we call it dark? Well, that is because scientists have not yet figured out what is the material/composition of Dark Matter. What and how do planets float in our Universe? On the one hand, within our Milky way Galaxy, we have Dark matter that keeps stars and planets floating and keep them where they are supposed to be but yet, OUTSIDE of our galaxy, we have Dark Energy, which is similar to Dark Matter but instead of keeping galaxies floating in our Universe, it pushes them far away from each other, at lightning speed. Some say we are about to experience a Big Crunch, where all of what we see will go back to its original point of Singularity, where energy will be highly concentrated into a pea size ball and then create the Big Bang explosion all over again. However, others disagree on that Big Crunch theory since Dark Energy is now a part of the equation in quantum theory. IF Dark Energy pushes galaxies away from each other, that means that the Universe is ever expanding right? That is simple logic. So how can scientists come up with this theory of the Big Crunch? Since the Hubble telescope can ONLY see all the way back to the beginning of time, when the Big Bang happened, 13.1 billion years ago, it is hard to assume that this actual event of the Big Bang is a repeat of an alternate Universe that occurred because of a Big crunch and created the Universe we see today.

The point of this study is that we the matter between our thoughts and actions is the nature of how we conduct ourselves daily, how we see life, how we appreciate the things we already have. By staying positive, no matter how things happen in our lives, we should focus on being grateful and thank the Universe for everything we are able to see and enjoy. Every thoughts you create, every word you say, every things you see can and will manifest itself in your future so start thinking positive. Are you experiencing issues? WE all do, so get to work and fix them. More you keep that negative energy from within, more you will experience negative results. The opposite is also true so keep on smiling, keep on moving forward and walk with your head held high. There is no other ways around that.

Message From the Universe: What Is Behind the Big Black Hole in Our Universe?

"Remember the joy you used to feel when you'd find a quarter in the street?

And how exciting it was when you got older and found a crumpled $20 bill in the pocket of a pair of jeans you hadn't worn in months?

Well, brace yourself, because the day isn't far off when in-between taking naps, swimming laps, or doing the routine happy dance, you'll be busy gathering documents for your tax return accountant and suddenly find a statement to a bank account you don't even remember opening, with more than enough money in it to do whatever your heart now longs to do, probably twice.

You do trip us out.

Sure enough,
The Universe"

This is how you should feel everyday of your life, when anticipating that great things will come your way. It may not be in the form of a bank account that you opened years ago and suddenly accrued enough interest to allow you to get the mansion down the street you always dreamed off. As long as you feel like great things will happen in your life and believe that you worked very hard to make all this happen, the Universe will start listening and paying attention to what you do, how you behave or act, how you treat people, how you help others so that it can render the results you expect the most.It may be hard for you to believe the HOW it will happen, or the WHEN. This is NOT your responsibility as the Universe is capable of doing that without even blinking. The supernatural force we have up there is just like that, SUPERNATURAL. However, that force is a creation of your own mind, you own desires and dreams, rendering reality based on your thoughts and actions.

I agree that all of what you are reading at this moment may seem far fetch, but until you start believing that all of what you see around you is a part of a creation that all started from this ONE point of singularity to eventfully create the world we see today. Without going too far in the theory of general relativity or quantum mechanics, we need to figure out how it all started with the big bang. If nothing was there, who had the thought to create what we see today. Obviously, all this can only be a theory as we can't see that far out after the 13.1 billion of years but it is possible that if what we see today started from that one point in space, that single pea size energy bubble that exploded, we can also assume that before the big bang, we had a big crunch, OR that on the other side of a big black hole, there is another Universe waiting to be created after another Big Bang, hopefully not happening around our solar system or galaxy. As no one was ever able to survive going pass the event horizon and live to tell the tale, we may just assume what happens if anyone or anything crosses the event horizon (sphagettification can occur after you pass the event horizon). Let's keep it all to just theory, how about that?
