15 Minutes - Let It Be This Day

What sounds of anguish must pierce the air, filtered through the darkness of a starlit night or within the sunbeams in search of someone, anyone who cares? Profound they are, even the silent screams that signal the suffering of one who feels hopeless; those who no longer believe they can change a result. Cherished dreams that have disappeared through the passage of time, self-respect corroded through continued failures, abilities and talents corrupted, lost through misuse, inconceivable potential bartered for fool's gold or the final loss of someone precious are burrowed into the anguish that spills forth. We arrive at this lonely pain filled place when we accept that we must face the unacceptable and believe it to be an undeniable end. Let it be this day that you know your cries arrived and were carefully enfolded into the arms of a loving Creator. If 15 minutes could alter the course would you try?

We celebrate passion in people, yet passions can quickly become habits, the door that invites us into addiction. Addictions are often born when we embrace with abandon ideals, work, people, places, alcohol and drugs; even the pursuit to be healthy. Anything or anyone we believe we cannot live without can become an addiction. This happens when our emotions become so enmeshed we can no longer be objective or walk away. It is likely that we all have addictive personalities. Some are considered to be normal or 'good for us,' avoiding the stigma of addiction.

Human receptors that control the urges that propel you back to what you wish to could let go of lasts a mere 15 minutes. Every time you think you can't do it you are 15 minutes from success. Most people acknowledge they could do anything they have to do for that amount of time. Every habit, belief or person that grips or binds you to a something you hope to stop, change or leave behind may be altered or even broken if you are willing to pause for 15 minutes, change the frequency you are riveted to and refocus your attention. It is necessary to look away; anything you look at or focus on is growing in intensity. The same energy that can propel you to enormous success binds you to things that can no longer serve you. Take the time; let it be this day that freedom beckons. Accept the invitation to really live again.

If you are tempted to look in the rear view mirror and rationalize why you thought this was a good idea when it began stop wasting your precious time. If you need to make a change the intentions that led you to a painful path no longer matter. Alter your course and remember that your very existence is a miracle. For a human to change their mind requires a miracle. That is two miracles before you begin. Use wisely your power of choice as you embark on a new journey. Let it be this day.

The Five Levels of Deep Habit And Behavior Change

We develop patterns, which we call habits.

They're like being bundled up in warm blankets with soft pillows on a cold morning; comforting, supportive, relaxing. Who would want to willingly change that? Continuing the metaphor, it can feel like moving to a sleeping bed on a hard floor, no air mattress, and the heater isn't working.

Since we are in a period of paradigm-shifting, life-altering, stress-inducing, overwhelming change, I thought it might be helpful to understand why it's so difficult to get new habits to stick.

Firstly, remind thyself that all change is spawned of fear, force, or pain.

No one wakes up thinking, "I love my life! Let me see how I can change it." We change because we see no alternative and because the "old system" wasn't cutting it anymore. Maybe times are different. Maybe we're different. But something must adjust, and sadly it's us. Being inspired to change by "negative" feelings also automatically puts us at a disadvantage as we're not thinking clearly to begin with.

To that end, know that there are actually five levels we must tweak, each deeper than the one prior if we're going to make our sleeping bag become a cushy, fluffy bed.

The simplest, easiest adjustment is Environment; defined as that which "I see."

Let's say you've decided to be socially responsible and be concerned with the greater good by wearing a facemask. However, each time you leave the house, you forget your mask. An example of Environment change could be relocating your mask to a hook by the front door. Now, it will prompt you to wear it. Simple. Easy.

But it might not stay with you if you don't change the next level: Behaviors, that which "I do." If I don't modify those, my Environment reverts to unsupportive.

Continuing with our illustration, upon returning home, you remove your mask and put it in the washing machine. That makes sense, but that behavior means that when you leave, Environment is no longer provoking you to wear a mask. Consequently, a Behavior change must take place, such as obtaining a few masks and placing them all at the front door, plus remembering to hang cleaned masks there when you finish the laundry. This alleviates the difficulty of "forgetting" to wear one.

"But, I can't keep remembering to put masks all around my house," you might reply. Welcome to level three: Capabilities, that which you "can" or "cannot" do.

Your perceived - and that's the operative word - Capabilities determine which Behaviors will stick or fade.

If your internal dialog is, "I don't have time to do this," or "I have too much else to do," you'll give up new Behaviors, putting you back to square one.

Capabilities are born of Beliefs, level four. Beliefs, despite appearing as facts to us, are really not.

They are feelings. They are not true for all but are to us. Continuing in our mask saga, if my Belief is that "masks are unnecessary and a pain in the behind" (um, poor choice of body parts for masks but you get my drift... ), then you will consider it unimportant and pointless to amend your Capabilities to reinforce that you can indeed managing a couple masks. Resultingly, new Behaviors fade, Environment becomes unsupportive, old habits returns. If my Belief changes to "I feel it's important to wear a mask, no matter how awkward," Capabilities shift, producing a positive domino effect.

With only a few hundred words, I can't really delve deep into the concept of Beliefs, as there are so many extenuating conditions that affect them. \

However, the Universal Truth they have in common is that they are the outgrowth of the deepest level, Identity, those words following "I am... "

We possess multiple Identities in which we adorn ourselves, depending on conditions. For example, my Identity of "Romantic" is certainly welcome and appropriate when it's my wife, yet would be out of line with my co-worker. Identities, like outfits, adjust to the settings in which we find ourselves. Rounding out the now over worn mask tale, if my Identity is "I am too busy to deal with this," my Belief might be "this is ridiculous;" yet again collapse the dominos. Should I alter my Identity to "I am socially responsible and concerned about spreading the virus," then Beliefs correct to "I feel it's important to figure out a way to do this." My Capabilities will now line up that empowerment. Behaviors adapt. Environment adjusts. New habit locks in.

Whether talking about pandemics, weight loss, productivity, or personal relationships, the pattern remains the same.

Lifelong Confidence - Guaranteed

As you are reading this article I guess you want a few things, including:

1 - You want confidence, or more confidence.

2 - You want to know that once you've got your confidence you are not going to become insecure again, you want to stay confident.

Well the good news for you is that it's totally possible for you to:

1 - Become confident, or more confident, and

2 - Once you've become confident, or more confident - it's perfectly possible for you to - keep that confidence - FOR LIFE!

I bet, right now you are both:

1 - Excited, and

2 - Sceptical.

So how do you achieve and maintain this confidence?

First things first.

1 - It's going to involve some hard work on your part, and

2 - You are going to have to work at it every day for the rest of your life.

Now a lot of people having read that, are going to close this web page and not come back. I wish them well. What about you? Are you going to be like them? Or are you willing to pay the price for lifelong confidence guaranteed?

If you are still reading this, there is hope for you, hope that you are about to become more confident, and become more confident - for life.

Okay, as you are still with me, I will now introduce you to the three stages of having lifelong confidence - guaranteed.

The first two stages you only have to do once.

The third stage you have to do - every day - for life! If that scares you leave now. If you want more, and may be willing to work at your confidence daily, and for life - keep reading.

Feel free to leave this article at any point, but just remember, if you do, you may be giving up a life time of guaranteed confidence.

Stage One: Create A Daily Confidence Study Tracker

What you need to do is to create a document that lists every day between now and when you'll die. You can either make your document a paper one, or an electronic one, or both. I have gone for both. Now, there is a problem, you don't know when you'll die. To overcome this, you need to work off three dates:

1 - Today's date

2 - The date you'll obtain the expected life expectancy for the country you live in, and

3 - The date you'll be 123 years old, if you live that long.

Let's look at these in more detail.

1 - This is straight forward.

2 - All you need to do is a quick web search and you'll find your expected life span for your country. Just add this to your date of birth and you'll have the date you are expected to die.

3 - Why 123 years old? It's because Jeanne Calment, who died on the 4th August 1997, lived to be 122 years and 164 days old, the oldest recorded human being. I've just rounded it up to 123 years.

Once you have your three dates you'll be ready to create your Daily Confidence Study Tracker. For my printed tracker I've used a Word document, and it's about 15 pages long. My electronic tracker is an Excel spread sheet. Each has a column for each year between now and my 123 years old date, and a row for each day in the year. That's a lot of boxes!

Stage Two: Decide On and Design Your Daily Confidence Study Activity

The next stage is to design an activity that you'll do every day that will increase your confidence.

Examples could be:

1 - To read one web page on confidence.

2 - To watch one online video on confidence.

3 - To read 50 locations in an eBook on confidence.

4 - To spend 30 seconds visualising yourself being very confident, and to do this five times in a day.

5 - Set a timer and write out, for five minutes, the things you've got right today, both big things and small things.

6 - Spend five minutes, looking at objects e.g. a C.A.T. and spell that object out using positive words with the phrase "I am... " in front of the words. For example "I am clever", "I am amazing", and "I am terrific."

7 - Set a timer and write out, for five minutes, the blessings you have in your life, both big things and small things.

As you are designing your activity, make it easy and quick (taking no more than roughly five minutes). This will make it much more likely that you'll consistently do the item each day. And as you will see below, you can redesign your activity after you've been doing it a while.

Stage Three: Do Your First Day's Daily Confidence Study Activity, And Mark It Off On Your Tracker

Now all that's left to do, is to actually do your activity. On each day, once you've done your activity, mark on your tracker to say that you've done it. On day one I would suggest that as soon as you've designed your activity, do your activity straight away.

The aim is between now and when you die, to do your activity on as many days as possible. You are unlikely to score 100% of days, but that shouldn't stop you trying. Go for the highest score possible.

Now, you'll get to stage when the first activity you've designed has become a habit of yours. You'll do it without thinking. Congratulations, you have achieved a major step to becoming confident for life. Now, there is no sense keeping as your activity something that you now do automatically, so you'll have to design a new activity. Use that activity and the tracker until the new activity also becomes a habit. And so on.

As long as you keep using the tracker each day, you will slowly build up confidence building habits one after the other.

As long as you keep using the checker each day, your confidence will grow and grow and - that is guaranteed for life.

Not Doing What You Say: How It Cripples You

Not doing what you say you're gonna do is a habit. - A habit that is unsupportive of your success.

That's what my old group coach used to say. In every single session.

Of course, we're not just talking about not taking out the trash when you said you would, or not buying milk when you said you would. (Although those things might be symptoms of a bigger problem).

We're talking never getting around to writing that novel. We're talking friendships dying because you never took each other up on those empty words of "we should totally hang out".

This is level not-having-the-guts-to-go-up-and-talk-to-that-someone-who-might-just-turn-out-to-be-the-love-of-your-life here.

The whole thing about not doing what you say is actually fairly simple, and I'm not gonna wait 'till the end to say it:

Doing what you say feels natural. You say something, you do it. Fair, square and simple.

But NOT doing what you say you're gonna do causes, as I love putting it, a disturbance in The Force. We feel a certain discomfort. A dissonance. A discrepancy.

In one of my former articles, I've written about how the one source of unhappiness in the world really comes down to a discrepancy between how things ARE vs. how we WANT them to be. And it's basically the same mechanism at play here.

Think about it. If someone claims the Earth is flat and you happen to know what 2nd graders know about astronomy, you probably want to call them out on it. Because there's a discrepancy between what you KNOW, and what someone else THINKS, which makes them questionable.

And if someone says they're gonna do something and then don't, at least you're gonna notice, if nothing more. Because there's a discrepancy between what they SAY and what they DO, which makes them questionable.

So when you notice this discrepancy in yourself, you're the one who's questionable - to yourself.

Not exactly a nice feeling.

In fact, if you keep on not doing what you say you're gonna do, it becomes the rule rather than the exception. This means, you will effectively make a habit out of something harmful, like with any toxic addiction.

And yes, I deliberately use the word "toxic" here. Because eventually, you'll either be incapable of carrying out anything important you say, or you'll care so little that you'll have exactly zero aspirations towards your entire life.

Think I'm kidding? Go ahead: Try and prove me wrong; see for yourself how it plays out in 10 to 20 years from now.

(In fact: Don't!)

Okay, so ideally, doing what you say should be practiced by everyone. And NOT doing what you say should be practiced by no one. Big whoop.

... But yes, I deliberately use the word "ideally" here.

Because we've all been there. We've all said we were gonna do something and then didn't. For whatever reason.

We might have postponed it until we forgot. Maybe we just didn't feel like doing it any longer.

Or maybe we deliberately procrastinated. Because deep down, we knew that doing it would take us to the next step. - Which could mean responsibility for our lives, other people getting expectations towards us, or rewards of which we basically felt unworthy.

While not doing what you say you're gonna do is fairly common, these last mentioned fears are especially common amongst people with low confidence and self-esteem.

To confident people, doing what you say comes just as natural as thinking it and saying it. Confident people do what they say, say what they mean, and think before they say it. Confident people aren't afraid of responsibility or expectations.

In fact, they gladly take responsibility, and, in addition to what other people might expect, they set expectations for themselves. And they don't consider themselves unworthy of any kind of reward. They accept it gladly, gracefully, and gratefully.

Just to make it clear: It's not that confident people never have any slip-ups or problems with balancing what they say and do. It's the fact that they want to improve at it, and are therefore willing to accept and learn from these slip-ups and problems which makes them good at keeping that consistency.

Want confidence? Doing what you say you're gonna do is mandatory.

Behavioral Addiction

Addiction as commonly known is the dependency to a psychoactive drug accompanied by some symptoms that appear on the addict. However addiction is not only linked to the ingestion of a drug like alcohol or cocaine, addiction can also be considered as the development of a behavior that produces stimulation to the reward system such as gambling, social networking which is a behavior driven by the FOMO effect and even work-holism.

In fact humans are creatures with addictive tendencies. We are developing tolerance to many behaviors. You know that you are addicted to certain behavior when that behavior changes from a habit into an obligation, you struggle to avoid doing a habit and you may have social and mental problems.

At the beginning, you start to experience a rush of pleasure when you carry out a new activity, so you start doing that behavior over and over again, then this behavior turns into a habit that is hard to quit.

A behavioral addict experiences the same bad consequences of a drug addict minus the physical effects of the drug on his body.

Signs of behavioral addiction:

  • You are obsessed by the activity you are carrying out.
  • You may have social problems.
  • You are doing this behavior over and over again and find it hard to stop regardless of its consequences.
  • People around you are demanding you to seek professional help.
  • You always hide doing this behavior.
  • You always feel depressed.
  • You feel anxious when not doing that behavior for enough time.

About treatment: it is still arguable about the cause and the method of treatment of addictive behaviors like gambling or social networking. Many think of behavioral addiction or also called process addiction as a disease while others don't think so.

Professionals debate about whether good control of the behavior such as scheduling it or something like that or medication is necessary to overcome the problem. That lack of agreement among experts causes problems with prevention and treatment methods for addictive behaviors.

What happens in your brain?

When you start doing an activity you like, an increase in the level of dopamine and serotonin (the neurotransmitters responsible for pleasure as mentioned in this post) is increased in the brain making you feel high. And that what brings you back.

How to overcome process addiction?

  • At first you should take care of your overall health; good sleeping and nutrition have strong impact on how your brain works.
  • Seek help and encouragement from people around you.
  • Search for a healthier habit to replace your addictive habit.

Creativity Is For Everyone

Creativity is a habit, a behavior--a choice with which everyone is born. The gift of creativity is either developed or lost through neglect. Unfortunately in many cases, we are lured away from our gift by our educational systems and even well-meaning parents and friends. However, there are those who receive the encouragement or circumstances to pursue a life of creativity or at least to allow it into some part of their lives.

In his book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, Ken Robinson tells the story of a mother who was concerned that her daughter had ADHD. She was unable to sit still in class and focus on her studies. The mother took her to see a psychologist. After talking to the child for a bit, the doctor asked the mother to join him outside the room and on the way out he flipped on the radio. He asked the mother to look through the opened door of the room. Her daughter was dancing and jumping up and down to the music. The doctor, in his wisdom, turned to the woman and said,"There is nothing wrong with your daughter. She is a dancer; give her dance lessons!"

This was the beginning of an incredible career for world renowned dancer and choreographer, Gillian Lynne (later known as Dame Gillian Lynne). Fortunately there were those in her life early on that understood her potential and were able to offer the direction and encouragement that ignited a spark into a flame of creativity.

There are volumes of stories about those who succeeded in breaking through to their creative lives by ignoring circumstances and living them anyway. As a failing student and with no thought of acting as a career, Dustin Hoffman took his first drama class only because a friend told him no one ever gets an F in drama. As a teenager, Paul McCartney was told by the Liverpool Boys' Choir director that his voice wouldn't fit in and dismissed him. Many creative careers were started by those cast out by the traditional system. So many times the creative spark is camouflaged in the jungle of status quo. It's no wonder why so many are in fear of treading the creative path, to any degree.

I believe that anyone who is willing to take the first steps toward living a more creative life will be blessed with childlike enthusiasm and joy.

"It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child."
~Picasso

You don't have to be Paul McCartney, Gillian Lynne, Dustin Hoffman or even pursue creativity professionally. All the benefits of Living The Creative Life are available to you by just getting in the game. Doing something creative every day gives you a greater sense of well-being and peace. It will add color and fulfillment to all other aspects of your life.

In their book, Ask and It Is Given, Esther and Jerry Hicks teach that the fastest way to manifest anything that you desire is to match the vibration of the desire. E.g., the match for more money would be the vibration of freedom, security and well being. The match for a loving, committed relationship would be much the same as money, as well as the vibration of fun and intimacy.

Establishing a creative practice is one of the easiest and most fun ways of setting up a vibrational field to attract our desires. There are no negative side effects to creativity. Creative pursuits stimulate new growth in the cells of our body, reactivate childhood passions, reduce stress, and add purpose and direction to our lives.

We are all born with the seeds of genius. The definition of genius is "a particular, distinctive, or identifying character of spirit." We are all distinctive; we all have our original ways of demonstrating spirit.

The definition of creative is "marked by the ability or power to create; having the quality of something created rather then imitated." We all have the ability to create something original. It just gets down to a choice to live more creatively, to find things in each day to appreciate and to do what turns us on--to be the creative geniuses we are!!

Mozart summed it up this way...

"Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both
together go to the making of genius. Love, Love, Love - that is the Soul of Genius."

There it is! Love what you do, focus your attention on it, get lost in doing it and genius will find you.

"Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter
do good things."
~Edgar Degas

Be Exceptional Regardless of the Work Environment

Joyful Woman in Purple Scarf and Brown Coat

Some people don't like where they work... at all. They may even despise who they report to. And since their work environment is so "toxic", they choose to withhold their best quality of work. "THIS PLACE does not deserve the best I have to offer. I will come to work, only do what is expected of me, collect my paycheck, and go home." Do you know anyone like that?

Bare Minimum

The problem with that line of thinking is that if you repeatedly choose to give the bare minimum, then eventually you will be comfortable giving the bare minimum. Yes, you would have unknowingly formed not only a habit, but a bad habit. At some point, you may not even know what excellent work looks like... and begin to think that you are not capable of being excellent. To be excellent is what you are called to be, and to be exceptional is what you are called to.

Hot Tea

During a recent hotel stay, I decided that I wanted to have some hot tea late one night. Since it was a limited service hotel, ordering room service was not an option. It was around 11PM, and I called the front desk to see where I could possibly get some tea from. The employee told me, "Our restaurant has already closed, so tea will be available in the morning for breakfast". Click.

Now, I obviously knew that tea and hot water had to be available somewhere on the property, but I decided to wait and speak to the manager in the morning. When I spoke with the manager the next morning, he was upset about what happened and even showed me the employee mini-break area that was only a few feet behind the front desk. The break area had a refrigerator, and the refrigerator was stacked with... wait for it... tea! All types of tea.

So, here are a few reasons why the front desk agent may have responded the way he did:

a) He legitimately didn't know there was tea available (yeah right).

b) He is only comfortable working within the strict parameters of his job.

c) He doesn't like his job and/or where he works and has chosen not to do one more ounce than he absolutely has to.

Your Zeal

You cannot allow anyone (or any work environment) to rob you of your zeal to be exceptional. As difficult as it may be, you must push through any disdain you may have and honor your role, honor who you are serving and honor yourself. At some point, each person has to make a decision about how exceptional he/she wants to be, regardless of the work environment. Eventually, it can be quite fatiguing to constantly strive for excellence in a work environment that you can't stand to be in.

In that case, see if you can address your discontentment with the appropriate people, or find somewhere else to work. But don't just find "any place" to work. Search for a company that has values which mirror your own.Ultimately, it's important to work for a company that you believe in.

Adjusting Your Service

Some people have a habit of adjusting their service based on how important they believe a particular customer is. One of the reasons that is so dangerous is because you really never know who you are serving or what their circumstances may be. We have no right to treat anyone like they are "just a customer". That is simply wrong, and even immoral. Every customer has a story and it is our obligation to honor that customer regardless of what the story may be.

Never again be lulled into the fallacy that it's OK to give the bare minimum. Savagely fight that fallacy with everything you've got. Be exceptional despite the work environment. Stephen Covey wisely wrote, "Be an island of excellence in a sea of mediocrity". While that certainly can happen, try to find a team, manager and company that allow you to work among many islands of excellence in an ocean happy to have you there.

In the end, service has a purpose, and a noble purpose at that. We serve because serving is a good thing, and good things are worthy to be exalted. There is significance to your role. There is purpose to your role. If you truly understand what that means, then you have the ability to impact lives, one customer at a time.

Success Comes When We Make Innovation As a Habit

man smiling while sitting and using MacBook

When I heard the phrase, fast fish eating slow fish, I thought about the importance of how alert an entrepreneur should be to stay afloat in the era of technology obsolescence and evolving economic dynamics. In fact, the earlier scenario where traditional people like us confronted was big fish eating small fish. In politics as well as in business this has been a common phenomenon. We live in an era where fast fish eats slow fish where entrepreneurs who closely follow the trends and respond to them with agility will survive at the expense of slow decision makers.

As new challenges are emerging, there is nothing like 100% sure shot ways to make businesses profitable or careers enriching. But when I observed 90% of the start-ups fail due to lack of innovation, I have decided to pen down my views to cultivate the habit of innovation among students or youth who have high aspirations.

Innovation Applicable to Families Also!

Leave businesses, if one is not innovative one finds it difficult to lead even family lives also. If the wife is a continuous learner, risk taker, and productive she will overtake her husband in finances as well as intellect. This will lead to the inferiority complex in the mind of husband, lack of respect from children, relatives leading to complications in relationships. To avoid this, start from families the habit of innovation. This will give children the right message.

Creating Future?

Changes make many perplexed. Market scenario constantly changes and that is one of the reasons the courses students learn suddenly becomes irrelevant. Youth may wonder, what is in store for them? The answer to this question is uncertainty. Then another question may arise, does this mean we give up? I will suggest no, as management guru Peter Drucker has answered this, "The best way to predict future is to create it." Now, let us consider how we can predict the future. The answer lies in ideating with the help of relevant research.

Identify a Mission

Dr. Kalam further stated, "To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal." You may be a student or an aspiring entrepreneur intending to launch a start-up. For that first of all, you need to ideate with the help of research.

Be Thinkers, Research, Make Clear Presentation

Ideating doesn't come easily. For that one has to think. Let us turn to Dr. Kalam who exhorted, "Have an aim in life, continuously acquire knowledge."

Let us stop job seeking, have career trying instead where you put your heart and soul into knowledge and its applications. To realize your career dream, you need to acquire specialized knowledge in your career stream. Not all, but some may ask, how? Suppose your goal is to be a structural engineer, research on the job description of that position. There you can find specialization like making calculations about loads and stresses.

If you have a fair knowledge about the excess load that may cause structural failure, you can show your value proposition to your employer. But do this with a case study approach. Case studies are substitutes for ancient storytelling. Therefore, have an eye on case studies that appear in websites. Develop knowledge, observe structures, ask questions, observe failures, and create your niche knowledge and see whether you can add more value to the processes. This is one case you can find a career.

To find a career in any domain, the procedure is same. Specialise in one core area that matches your aptitude.

Execute Ideas after Consideration

Awareness, consideration, and conversion - that is the rule in marketing. Whatever you ideate you need to execute or convert into action. If you have a strategy of learning lessons from failure analysis, you can execute a plan with low risk. Today, the recipients of products and services have high expectations. The only way to survive in the market is by offering goods and services of superior quality. Apply the same approach to education also. The thrust here is there should be a mechanism to regularly connect with the businesses and understand niche requirements and develop custom content to make students employable. There should be a constant emphasis on the expectation of quality of product and services. This will make them prepared to meet uncertainties with ease.

Role of Institutes

Finally, product knowledge or specialization alone will not fetch result. Knowledge of marketing alone will bring the desired results. My point is marketing should not be confined to MBA students. Students should get a crash course in marketing, how or why companies advertise and for whom. Education institutes should inform their students clearly that the purpose of a business is to create a customer.

Educational institutes should have a policy to encourage students on career-related content development networking with companies and industry thought leaders. They should invite industry thought leaders to conduct seminars on skill requirements to make students ready for the career. Be it arts, science, engineering, or technology; education institutes can create effective executives for India Inc., along with the steps mentioned above.

Let Us Together Foster Excellence

Let me come back to the key theme - fast fish will consume slow fish. You may be a student or an entrepreneur. But you need to understand time is premium and redeeming the time with specialized knowledge, tailored communication, and efficient execution to become fast fish and be relevant to the markets. Finally, remember the advice of Bharat Ratna Dr. Kalam, "Excellence is a continuous process." Have a strong determination to be successful by remembering the vision of Dr. Kalam.

One can be successful with making innovation as a habit

Get Your Mind Out of a Box: Boosting Creativity at Work

man holding incandescent bulb

It's psychological, isn't it? Creativity involves being open to new ideas and also being willing to learn new ways. But how do you get your old brain, used to new ideas?

Start with a new habit. One woman set a lifetime goal for herself: Whatever her age, she set a goal for that year to do that many new things. At age 50, she wanted to try 50 new things, at 60, she wanted to try 60 new things. By the time she was 70, she wanted to try 70 new things that year. Of course when she was younger the challenges were bigger, but as she grew older some of the new things were really quite small. She might try a different flavor of ice cream, or go home by a different route. She learned that even these little changes had a dramatic effect on how she thought. She felt more alive, relaxed and creative.

Do any of you have a color of clothes you won't wear? Do you here have a payment method they won't use? How about a hairstyle you definitely won't consider? In your work world, it may be a type of work you won't do, or it could be new technology you want work with. Break these habits and create a new one.

The habit of 'Yes' is crucial. If you can say 'Yes' more often your mind will open up. Relearn the words: "Maybe I can... " and "Sure, I can do that... " And not only will people see you more positively, but you will find yourself doing new things with a wide open horizon.

Still in a rut? Try turning your day up-side down. Stay up later, or wake up earlier. People who stay up later feel more creative. People who wake up earlier feel more effective. Sometimes a one day change can break a creative block. Switch your routines. You will find yourself meeting different people and exposed to different ideas.

Try drinking more coffee for just a day. People who try this find themselves not-too-surprisingly stimulated. For an extra kick, try this with a friend. You will find yourselves brainstorming away.

Keep a pen and paper on the nightstand. People tend to be less inhibited at night and frequently have their best ideas--just at the time they are too tired to act on these ideas. Try writing down these inspirations as they occur, but acting on them in the morning.

Incorporate some fun and humor in your life. Take in a standup comic's show, or watch a funny movie. Humor relaxes people and lets the creative juices flow. For even more boost, bring a friend along. Having fun is better with others.

If you need more creativity at work, consider bringing some humor and fun to work. Share cartoons, or jokes with coworkers.

Also at work consider sharing your admiration. Ask people what they like about their job. As you find more people with interesting 'takes' on their work world, you may find yourself agreeing. Sharing a little of what you like tends to make people happier and better balanced. Creativity will flow in a relaxed, pleasant environment.

The Habit of a Journalist

Woman in White Long Sleeved Shirt Holding a Pen Writing on a Paper

Out of all the activities, journaling according to me is the healthiest activity. You feel relieved after spilling out every single thought going through your head. It is a fun activity as well because you play with your own words and ways of expression. Everyone should make journaling a habit.

Most of us feel like giving up writing after a week or two. Have you ever wondered why does this happen? This is because we don't make it a routine habit. We actually think of it as a hectic task but not as a pleasurable and joyful activity.

At the very beginning we get stuck at finding the right topic to write on. One easiest way of getting rid of this problem is to right about what you've done for the whole day. Write down about your daily routine, your work, your love life, things you like and things you dislike. Writing about your own self is one of the simplest topic you can ever find.

Secondly, reading can also help. Searching for random stuff on internet including journals written by different people can give you various ideas about what to write and how to write it. Reading helps you learn better ways to express your thoughts and ideas. This is how you learn how to express your inner thoughts and feelings through relevant and affective words.

Try to find out inspirations. Your inspirations and aspirations are basically the sources of motivation. Bookmark the journals, articles, quotes or texts you like. Keep a record for present and future reference.

Environment and your state of mind are also quite important. The time when you wake up in the morning is considered as the period when you can effectively utilize all your senses to produce excellent work. Moreover, it is important to be in a relaxing environment where you feel good. It affects your mind more than you can imagine and it enhances the productivity rate as well. For instance, while sitting under a huge tree with a cup of tea, you can think about so many things and can transform all those thoughts and ideas into some amazing words. All you need is a good diary with a fine pen like that of Parker or Pelikan.

In the end, all I want to say is if you want to write, just start doing it. You will feel a lot better and productive. Mark my words.

The Art of Self-Sabotage (By Natalia Shoutova)

"I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination." - Jimmy Dean

Every day of my coaching career, I encounter and foil strategies of self-sabotage.

Self-sabotage does not follow rules of common sense or logic. Often it passes under our radar, because we are more aware of when others put sticks in our wheels, and less aware of when we do it to ourselves. Self-sabotage is resilient and sticky. Like tax loopholes, when one self-sabotage strategy is closed down, another one will almost immediately take its place.

It is also highly destructive. Because you intimately know your target (YOU), you can hit your weakest spots and cause the greatest damage. Whether you are a city professional, an entrepreneur or a busy parent, it is crucial to become aware and thwart self-sabotage at its earliest stages - before it grows into a habit.

Here are 10 common self-sabotage strategies. Which ones are you harbouring?

1. Unrealistic expectations. Setting goals that are too general, unachievable or unquantifiable. Sometimes the goal is so overwhelming and nebulous it prevents us from starting. Doing the same thing expecting different results also falls within this category. The main issue with unrealistic expectations is that they destroy self-belief and motivation. Fear of failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. When your actions are not producing the results you want, stop and choose different actions. Ensure that your goals are specific, achievable and measurable. Ask yourself: How will I know when I reach my goal?

2. Spreading yourself too thinly. Juggling is part of life. However, pick up one ball too many and all the balls are likely to fall to the ground. Taking on another client matter when you are already swamped, not taking vacations, saying yes to looking after the neighbour's dog or offering to host Christmas may all tip the balance. Prioritise. Identify what is important to you right now. Learn to say no. Sometimes saying yes to your sanity and wellbeing means saying no to requests of others. Look after your health and fitness, and carve out pockets of time just for yourself. Juggling is easier when you are on top form.

"We are what we repeatedly do." - Aristotle

3. Indecision and over-analysis. Sitting on the fence uses up your energy, focus and time. Analysing the same options multiple times does not create new possibilities. It creates a loop of analysis-paralysis. Step back to get some perspective. Obtain an impartial opinion. Ask yourself: What is missing? What would help me make the decision? What would I do if I weren't afraid?

4. Ruminating on past failures. There is much to be gained from past failures. Such as learning what to do differently next time, honing your coping strategies and simply knowing that you can get over obstacles. What is not useful is churning events over and over. You risk creating a habit out of failure. Regret and resentment are like anchors, they do not help us to move forward, but simply spin us round as the tide comes in and out.

"Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping that it will kill your enemies." - Nelson Mandela

5. Avoiding challenges. Often during times of imposed change clients bemoan to me that they like "security" and "stability". Yet when I ask them when they last felt fulfilled and motivated, it is generally when they were problem-solving or working on a challenging goal. Living and working in our comfort zone does not stretch our capabilities or fulfil our potential. There is a risk of becoming bored and unmotivated. Do not settle for stumbling from day to day. Strive for a bigger life experience.

6. Neglecting relationships. Building authentic relationships takes time and effort, but it is hugely rewarding. Businesses, families and communities are built on relationships between people. Have you noticed how unfriendly atmosphere at work can transform the perfect job into the worst job? Generally, people leave people rather than jobs. Take time to cultivate your relationships. Small things really matter - a smile, a "Good Morning", remembering your colleague's birthday, or booking a surprise dinner for your partner. If this feels like a chore, ask yourself, what makes that relationship important to me?

7. Downgrading your self-development. Keeping up with industry knowhow and technological advancements is not a bonus it is a must. Own your career, become an expert in your field. Do not forget your personal self-development. Stagnation results in boredom and lack of motivation. Lifelong learning adds breadth to our life experience, and keeps us healthy and active into the old age.

"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving." - Einstein

8. Poor time management. Feeling rushed and overwhelmed? Time management is in reality about managing ourselves. Dedicating time to planning will save you time and stress in the future. Often we focus on fire fighting - dealing with what is urgent; rather than working on important tasks that really contribute to our productivity. Prioritise what is important, organise your day and week around those priorities, streamline activities, remove distractions. Remember to make your plan realistic and work in some flexibility.

9. Passively waiting for belief and motivation. Motivation will not come until you engage with your goal and commit to the challenge. Ask yourself: What are the benefits of pursuing this goal? What will happen if I do nothing? Belief is born through action, by overcoming obstacles and pushing into your stretch zone. Aligning your goals with what is genuinely important to you helps to cultivate motivation and passion. Belief and motivation exist through choice not through chance.

10. Being your own worst critic. Learning from your mistakes is valuable. Reprimanding yourself endlessly is counter-productive. Would you give the same barrage of criticism to a friend or a colleague caught in the same circumstances? How you see and treat yourself directly impacts on how others see and treat you. Nurture your self-esteem and self-image. They are your sturdiest tools.

The Choices You Make, Make You

Woman Lying on Green Grass While Holding Pencil

This certainly seems rather obvious and hard to argue with. So why do a majority of people prefer to play the blame game for their lot in life? If I had a dollar for every time I have talked to an athlete or an athlete's parent who told me they could have been a professional athlete but, 'their coach didn't promote them,' or 'screwed them over,' I'd be retired already. Other often repeated 'reasons' people fail to achieve their goals include: "The timing was not right," "I didn't have enough time," "My circumstances changed," and "I just lost interest."

I often tell my clients that it is a lot quicker to go from failure to success than it is to go from excuses to success. You only have a limited amount of time and energy so how you choose to use both will determine who you become and where you end up. Making mistakes and failing are an inevitable part of life for all of us (except Kim Jong-un). Perfection is an attractive concept but it does not exist in reality.

If you are able to view mistakes and failure as simply part of the process, you won't feel the need to make excuses when they occur. Learning to accept this fact and take responsibility for all of your choices and actions leads to a secure feeling inside of you and eliminates the need for blame and excuses.

I also tell my clients that, 'Blame is just a way to temporarily discharge your own pain and discomfort in situations.' I suppose it is part of human nature to go for the easy short-term relief provided by blame and excuses, but the truth is it does not take as much work as you may think to create a new habit of taking responsibility. Best of all the pay-off will include relief of substantial pain and discomfort for the rest of your life as well as increased performance and success in all of your endeavors.

Creating a habit of taking responsibility will not assure your success in any of your endeavors. However, I can guarantee that until you do create this habit you will never perform anywhere near your peak levels. Think of excuses and blame the same way you (hopefully) think of heroin. It may make you feel better initially, but it won't be worth the damage it does to you over time. When was the last time you (or anyone you know) used heroin to enable themselves to perform at the highest level?

The Dalia Lama said it best: "When you think everything is someone else's fault, YOU will suffer a lot. When you realize that everything springs only from yourself, YOU will learn both peace and joy.

Why Are You Still Holding Onto That Piece Of Pooh?

Did you know that any life draining habit you have has the potential to open you up to your untapped sources of sustainable and vibrant energy?

So if you have issues with seeking validation from external sources such as friends, your children, your spouse, inanimate objects and even strangers - you know what?... you have hit a gold mine!

When you rely on yourself for validation you develop an internal source of power that instantly benefits you in immense ways. Because this power is cultivated internally, it causes your core values to strengthen and thus you can positively grow in any direction that you choose - no longer reliant on what anyone says.

The other choice you have in life is to seek validation and approval from other people, strangers or even just a construct of 'other' is enough to retard some people!

Relying on others to make you 'valid' not only destroys any sense of self worth, but you live a life of moving with fear rather than through it - a life where you are controlled by others, making it virtually impossible to realize your potential!

When you seek to validate yourself through others you become an addict to external sources of power. As an addict you rapidly lose trust in yourself, which in turn weakens your ability to focus and have faith in your internal goals... what truly matters to you... what gives you purpose and meaning in life!

What I have come to realize for myself is this -

When working with addiction - 'who' or 'what' you seek validation from is of little matter. And by focusing on 'who' or 'what' you seek to validate you actually slow down your own healing process, because again you are focusing on the 'external' source in order to heal what is ultimately an 'internal' issue.

If you have cultivated the habit to seek validation from others you can be sure that you also been actively cultivating aversion to focusing internally within. You may find it hard to stay grounded, stay true to your core values, attract healthy relationships, reach personal goals, drain your spouse/kids, be disciplined and are easily distracted.

It doesn't help that epidemic levels of social media, that encourage people's capacity for external validation, are there to distract you at every turn! Therefore more than ever we need to validate our own path and practice.

So how do you stop seeking validation from others?

The answer is simple.

[OK now for the bit about pooh... ]

If you had a piece of pooh in your hand would you hold onto it; looking at it carefully, studying its texture etc? No way! Of course you would drop that piece of pooh right on the floor - no need to wait for validation to drop it, right?! It is a piece of pooh after all and not something that you want in your hand one second longer thank you very much!

The same goes for letting go of the need to seek validation from others... just drop it.

Then ask yourself the following questions again and again in order to re-educate yourself through your own cleansing honesty.

Is seeking validation from others draining me?

Has it increased my suffering?

If the answer is 'Yes' and 'Yes' then it is time for you to stand on your own two feet, reconcile who you are and when around others contain your own energy by staying focused on observing yourself - whether it be your breath, your activity, your hands, your feet, dharmic practice... basically whatever works!

It is really simple and may feel strange at first to go inside for recognition. You may feel vulnerable. That's good... keep at it!

As you change you may even feel the urge to get angry and blame all those you have been using to make you valid! Remember that the validation you truly seek comes from inside. Let go of struggling with external forces and focus where it counts - inside - in you.

Your Spiritual path will surely accelerate as you drop that piece of pooh and discover the gold mine of internal resources within!

New Year's Resolutions: Mistakes To Avoid + Be Successful

Most people look at the beginning of the year as a chance to change their lives,

However, I have seen that at least 50% of those who establish New Year's Resolutions or Big Goals for the New Year fail.

Reasons are that people are putting so much pressure on themselves to make New Year's Resolutions. or believe their lives will change at the stroke of midnight. Such extreme pressure sets your up for failing. Most people are in a fog from the holidays on January 1st that they don't even think about starting because they are tired or stressed.

For example, I had a client who for a couple years in a row said he was going to stop smoking for the New Year. He never did because he really felt pressure and in his heart really did not want to stop. This is so common to make such grand choices because people feel they are expected to make choices such as losing weight, stop smoking or other

habits that they really don't think about much the rest of the year.

How you can increase the likelihood of keeping a resolution or a new habit?

Whether is a New Year's Resolution or setting goals, people are more likely to success if they just take the time at the end of the year or when they are goal-setting to reflect. People should reflect on the past year or recent month to get a baseline or reference point on what they have been doing with their life and where they are at right now.

Asking 'heart-felt: questions are the key.

You must reflect before you make your choices.

1. Write down what you have done this last year.

Do these for different areas of your life such as work, relationships and self (self-care).

2. Ask yourself: What is missing in my life?

What have I not done yet?

3. Ask Yourself: What would I most likely to have in my life right now?

Image or picture what you most want in your life.

How would I feel in the next few years if I have not pursued my dreams and goals?

Don't be upset if you have negative thoughts or reactions, let 'inspirational dissatisfaction' motivate you.

The likelihood of making goals and developing a new habit are based on the questions what must be asked before goal setting. If you do not take the time to ask yourself these questions you are just shooting arrows in the dark at a target.

4. Goals:

After these questions then you are ready to make 2 to 4 goals.

Keep these tips in mind when you make your goals. To begin building new habits that support your goals or just wanting to make a change inhabits I suggest:

1. Start with small gradual moves or steps.

For example. if you want a new career or skills don't quit your job to go back full-time to school, take one course for a start and see if you like it. Break the goal down to tangible parts.

2. Break free of excuses

What may sound as valid reason for not working on your goals and new habits are really 'agony anchors' that hold you back. These are feelings of fear of change.

I hear from clients that they are 'too busy', 'I had no time this week' and other self-pity statements. This is never empowering. I have clients get a calendar or put in the cell phone calendar the day or evening they will work on their new goals and habits.

Example: If it is to go to the gym, schedule it in your calendar. Pre-plan and make this appointment with yourself. I am amazed how crowded my gym is in January and have many people stop going by Feb, because they have allowed many 'distractions" in their lives. Yes, things pop-up. If and when they do, immediately re-schedule your calendar when you will attend.

3. Don't share your goals or some of them with people who will act critical. Only tell those who will encourage and support you.

To become happier and more confident -- avoid emotional vampires. Unhappy people allow "emotional vampires" to suck their positive feelings right out of their skulls. Emotional vampires include people who put you down, criticize or mock you, or sabotage your dreams and aspirations. Never let snipers or negative people shoot holes in your boat. These types of people drain the life out of you.

Take survey of your life by making a list of people and situations you expose yourself to. Then, discard or limit people, habits or situations that keep you from feeling optimistic and happy. In other words, 'burn your bridges' if needed.

Example: I had a young client in her early 30's who wanted to train to run a half-marathon. She was very excited. She told her mother what she was planning to do and her mother looked at her and said, "you can't do that... " She was upset and learned very quickly this principle of enlisting those who are only positive and supportive.

Follow these tips and you will not only be successful in the New Year, you will feel happier and optimistic.

The Principle Of The Golden Goose And The Eggs

Clearly, we all had at one point in our life a golden goose that laid eggs. It doesn't matter if it relates to finances, relationships, business, nature or anything else; all of us have been there. We as humans are creatures which often generate an action that would destroy the profitability of this asset.
But why do we act this way?

We often do so out of habit, ingratitude, routine and most of all, greed. We should be satisfied by only living of the given eggs but many of us become so greedy that we kill the goose in our want for more.

The summary of the story goes something like this:

A man has a goose, takes care of it and before he kills to eat it, to his surprise, she lays a golden egg. He and his family are now rich and each day the goose lays a golden egg. After a while, the man and his wife get greedy and want more, so thinking the goose has a lot more golden eggs inside her, they kill it but they find nothing. Now it only became a meal.

The moral of this principle is that many of us would do better if we could control ourselves knowing that greed destroys our source of good.

In reality, most successful people know how to control and use this natural law to their advantage. On the other hand, average people act like the goose that lays the golden egg. In return for their hard work, they receive a low-income paycheck at the end of the month. And once they have the money, they lay their golden eggs by... buying liabilities such as gadgets, partying, or wasting it on frivolous things, etc.

The Golden Goose and its Golden Eggs
Now why is that most of us kill what inspires freedom, love, joy and having fun in paradise?

The principle of the Golden Goose has many meanings, but it definitely has a primary meaning.

What do you get out of it, when applied to your inner self, your personal life, or to a larger implication that focuses on your relationship, family, friends, neighbors, community, culture, state, country, or even the world?

The fact is that everyone should have a goose that lays golden eggs. So my question is: Where is your goose and where are your golden eggs?

The first time I read about and understood this rule, I realized that, in my life, I had lost too many goose and in consequence, the eggs that came with it. Finally, not so long ago, I began to build my golden goose in a better way and care for it.

You need to understand that such a goose can keep laying golden eggs for your future, leaving a legacy for the generations to come if taken care of properly. But if you abuse the goose, starve it, or manipulate it to make more golden eggs to increase short-term profits, then suddenly she will lay no more eggs.

The Teaching Lesson of this Principle
According to the principle, what you focus on is what ends up affecting you. And since you focus more on fear, ingratitude, greed, resentment and envy, just to name a few, that is what shows up more and more in your life.

By focusing on fear, lack of appreciation, anger or greed as a solution, you slowly kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

For example, do you remember when your parents punished you for being too inquisitive, you believed you were bad and undeserving; or when you had a great girlfriend or boyfriend, but you lost that person because of your ingratitude. You took it personally.

So today you might kill whatever gives you too much love, fun or pleasure and you envy stuff that others have as valuable, such as luxury, gold and money.

The lesson here is that you must create a 'Golden Goose' for yourself. With your help, she is going to lay eggs. These eggs will give you a life of financial freedom when the time comes. You should live off the eggs but never, I cannot stress it enough, NEVER off your goose.

Your eggs equal the interests, dividends and earnings coming from your mortgages, stocks or capital gain. You should also create passive incomes.

It is easy to know what to do but it is harder to do what you know.

Take Care of the Goose
Know that you are designed to live a life that provides for all of your needs. However, you can somehow kill your golden goose and lose all of your golden eggs which life provided for you by easily focusing on greed and ingratitude.

Your destiny and financial freedom is bright and full of light, love and giving. But despite this birthright and great potential, you can destroy your goose if you do not take care of it, so re-invest some of the profits you made to create more eggs.

Do not forget to control your short-sighted nature which usually looks at short terms instead of long terms investments, and act accordingly.

Even though you had no choice when you were a child, you are now old enough to be who you want to be. Growing up, you were trained how to speak and write your language, go to school, do your job, fix stuff, use appliances, cook, drive, swim, work a computer, etc.

But now, it is time for you to get a golden goose that lay eggs, so you can live happy and healthy, even have financial freedom, travel anywhere you please, as to enjoy life and live with a great serenity knowing you leave a legacy.

Five Ways to Be Ahead of Time

One of the greatest assets in life is time, one of the greatest delusions in life is still time and one of the greatest illusions in life is time.

The world is regulated by time, as far as life on Earth is concerned, it is timed, and every aspect of living is timed. The different categories of timing represent the diverse stages of life. In reality, time regulates seasons, seasons influence trends and trends regulate people. Thus everyone in life is either a time setter or a time checker.

Time setters are able to position themselves ahead of the time by following principles that propel them beyond the present time while time checkers follow time and are bound by the shackles of trends.

However, there are principles to follow if you desire to be ahead of time, below are five vital ones:

1) BE VISIONARY:
What do you see? Vision is not the presence of sight, but the presence of inner sight or what you call INSIGHT. What you see for your life affects what you expect from your life and how you move in your life. Seeing beyond the present moment, gives you a glimpse of what the future can be and ultimately gives you the advantage to prepare for it. Vision propels you to move ahead of the present season and positions you ahead of the crowd.

2) PLAN.
In advancing in life, the place of planning can never be overemphasized. You have envisioned the times ahead, then take one more step to plan your way to it. Ask crucial questions, meet strategic people, obtain the required skills and synchronize your life around your plan of the vision. Ask yourself, what does it take to get to my vision, how can I get there, where should I start, who do I need, how long will it take me to get to my vision. Be deliberate to get the right answers because they unfold your plan for the vision.

3) BE PASSIONATE.
Passion is a fuel to purposeful living. One distinguishing factor in life is the passion we live it with. Passion keeps you moving even in the most harsh conditions. When you lose passion for living, you have lost life itself. Develop passion For the plan of your vision, and see the self limiting obstacles crumble in your face.

All through history, you will discover that the most outstanding people are the most passionate ones. These are men and women who are zealous of what they are doing, and they are not apologetic about their obsessions.

4) FORM A HABIT.
To be ahead of the crowd, form vision sustaining habits. Be deliberate in cultivating habits that will naturally bring you closer to your vision. When you absorb great habits into your lifestyle, you automatically program your mind on what is important to you. One thing about habits are that they are hard to cultivate, and even harder to break. Consistency with these vision oriented habits gives you an edge over those that do not have them and places you on the right track for vision actualization.

5) PRAY
Vision, plan, passion and habit are nothing without the hand of God. Prayer still remains the master key to unlocking the future. When you pray and Access God, your vision crystallizes in your spirit and you start living it out in the now. Hearing from God is an acid test to the success of every vision. Moreover, visions are birthed in the place of prayer, and prayer, brings God into every vision, plan, passion and habit. Don't make praying your last option, rather the first. Prayer simplifies complicated matters and builds your faith, which is crucial in vision actualization, especially the big ones. Therefore, the bigger the vision, the more praying is involved.

Finally, understand that life is in seasons, but you can change the season by influencing the time through these principles.

DON'T JUST WATCH TIME...
SET YOUR DESTINY TIME...
