What Is My Life Purpose? What IsThe Meaning Of My Life?

Asking yourself: "What is my life purpose?" is one of the most important questions you will ever ask. It cuts straight to the heart of who you are and why you are here.

Life purpose coach Richard Leider has defined an equation for establishing your life purpose as:

Gifts + Passions + Values = Purpose

G + P + V = P

Your answers to that question will change and develop as you mature in age and experience, he suggests that there are 3 stages:

  1. Uncovering - your gifts and passions and values, figuring out how and where you fit with your offering to the world.
  2. Discovering - the world's not just about you and your success and your abilities, it's about us, your greatest fulfillment comes from "us" and connecting.
  3. Rediscovery - the greater whole, wisdom is seeing the bigger picture, realising that we are tribal creatures and we live in a world that is inter-connected.

# How I rediscovered my life purpose sitting in a bar in Singapore

I hadn't considered the 'why and am I here, what's it all about?' for sometime when I rediscovered it sitting in a bar in Singapore a while ago with a bunch of expat friends enjoying some beers and a chat. The conversation took an interesting turn when one of them suddenly asked the group:

"If you knew you were going to die tonight and you were given a few minutes to reflect before that happened, what would you say was the meaning of your life?"

On hearing that question I suddenly had a moment of clarity and I realised that for me the answer was (and remains):

"What difference will you make?

What impact will you leave in the lives of others?"

# A fast track to discovering your life purpose

  1. Accurately identify your Core Desires
  2. Unleash a powerful force that lies within you - the Conquering Force.
  3. Find a teacher, mentor or coach to help you realize your Core Desires and focus your Conquering Force.

# Jack Canfield - suggests the following 3 steps

  1. What are the 2 qualities you most enjoy expressing? [Understanding how stuff works & Mentoring others] How do you most enjoy expressing them?
  2. What would the world look like if it was operating perfectly according to you.
  3. Create a vision of what your life would like if you were fully living your purpose.

Finding The Meaning Of Your Life

All through existence, finding the meaning of your life is a question that follows you like a shadow. There is no escaping it as all of us feel like leaving a mark in this world at one point or another. You are not just a cosmic accident. Life is not only about existing but about living well and with purpose.

What if you lived your whole life only to discover it was wrong? Do you know why you are here? Are you ever asking yourself what will be different if you followed what is really important to you?

Well, if you do not know the reason why you are here, then I encourage you to find out what your purpose is. Yes, there is a meaning to your life. Your existence is fragile. I do not want to be a 'killjoy' but, in truth, your light or mine could just flicker out and we could be gone in an instant.

"There is not one big cosmic meaning for all; there is only the meaning we each give to our life, an individual meaning, an individual plot, like an individual novel, a book for each person." - A. N.

A sense of Purpose is Key

When you realize that you only have a limited time; that tomorrow may never come, and are always moving toward death, you start to understand that life is precious. So, therefore, you should not waste whatever days you have at each moment is a valuable gift.

Thus, you have to take time to stop and reflect on your existence. Ask yourself if you are doing the right thing. With what is happening in the world, you must begin to look at what are the things you love to do. And do them!

Finding the meaning of your life and your sense of purpose is the key you need in your life which will help and direct you to the right path.

"The man who regards his own life and that of his fellow creatures as meaningless is not merely unfortunate but almost disqualified for life." - Albert Einstein

Finding the Meaning of Your Life

You have to use the powers that you possess for what you love. The reason is that too many people go through life never discovering or using their real meaning in life. Most people go to their graves with their greatness still in them. So, what is it that gives your life a sense of purpose and meaning?

If you know what it is, I encourage you to start working on it. If you cannot do it all at one time, just do a little bit of it each day. Work on it step by step. And if you do not know what your reason for being is, I want to inspire you to find what the meaning of your life is.

Once you discover that, it puts you in your natural power place. Each day, 85% of the people in this world are going to jobs they hate. If you work in something that does not challenge you and you get sick just thinking about going to it. Then you are on the wrong road!

Living a Meaningful Life

When you go to a job you already know and dislike, you already grasp how far you will go. And you can see you have a limit of natural achievement. Simply put, you are in a dead-end position. It just eats away at your self-esteem. And it creates an inner turmoil and emptiness in you that only purpose can fill.

Therefore, I believe that in your existence, it is worth finding the meaning of your life, so that you can live an extraordinary one. You do not want to look back and realize that you worried about stuff over and over for years. It is not the things you do in life that you regret but the things you do not.

So, you do not need to take things for granted, surely in your life. And, most importantly, you do not want to die with remorse, guilt, and regrets. Especially concerning stuff that you did not do because you were either scared of doing or a prisoner of your own thoughts.

Pursuing the Meaning of Your Life

Now, imagine if you will, being on your death-bed. In lying there, you see the ghost of the dreams, the ideas, and the abilities given to you by life all this time. But for whatever reason, you never pursued any of those things. You never acted on those ideas or even never used those gifts or skills.

And there you are, staring at yourself. You think of what you could have done but now, all of it must die with you forever. The real question now is "If you die today, what dreams, what gifts, what abilities, and what ideas will die with you?"

So, find the meaning of your life and pursue it, wherever it may lead you. You will be a much happier person for it and live a greater existence. And in doing so, you will be amazed at the good deeds you can accomplish for whatever is dear to your heart.

The Meaning of Life

A seeker goes to Nepal and climbs into the Himalayas to find a teacher, a guru he's heard about. After months of searching and struggle, he finds the famous man, and asks his burning question: "What is the meaning of life?"

"The meaning of life is a bridge," replies the wise man.

The seeker is incensed. "Wait a minute, what kind of dumb answer is that? I struggled and fought to get here, and that's all you have to say? A bridge? That's the stupidest thing I ever heard!"

The guru blinked, looked at him and said, "You mean... it's not a bridge?"

Most of my clients come to me, not searching for the meaning of life, but focused on some crisis in their lives: a relationship disaster, marriage or family problems, lack of direction and motivation, some huge loss for which they're grieving, an emotional problem such as anxiety or depression, or perhaps even for help in recovering from an addiction. The first thing we do is sort through the crisis, handle immediate problems, and get everything settled down, then we embark on an extended process of figuring out how the problem happened and what must change to keep it from happening again. Once those things are handled, there's a period of bliss or euphoria, when life is working for the first time, they feel successful, calmer, more in charge. Most clients leave at this time.

Then, frequently, they come back asking "Now that I'm in charge of myself, and have a lot of extra energy, because life is a lot easier and my relationships are working, it feels like I'm missing something-what am I doing here?"

This begins a spiritual search for meaning, which I've written about in a couple of books-The Real 13th Step, and The Ten Smartest Decisions a Woman Can Make After Forty.

People for whom the basics of life are already established need more: they need a sense of meaning and a higher purpose than just survival. Once self-confidence and self-esteem are established, you'll need a challenge to feel satisfied, a way to express your uniqueness and individuality to yourself, to friends, and to the world.

But if your life's purpose is not evident to you already, how do you find out what it is? Where does a sense of purpose come from? It comes from within you, and is not imposed or chosen from outside. Your purpose may be your livelihood, or it may have nothing to do with how you make a living. Your purpose may be a simple one, like making a good, healthy life for yourself and your children, or it may be more dramatic, and based on what you learned by healing your own childhood experience. Many people know that inner purpose has the power to transform anxiety, anger, fear and rage into powerful, life-affirming action:

Dr. Bernie Siegel, a cancer specialist, was discouraged and frustrated about the lack of success of medicine against cancer. He challenged the focus of the medical establishment by looking at patients who had experienced "miracle cures" and "spontaneous remissions." Although he was ridiculed by his peers, he persevered, and out of it he developed a new way of enlisting the patient's own healing capability, outlined in his book, Love, Medicine and Miracles.

Cleve Jones turned his rage, bitterness and grief about AIDS into the Names Project Memorial Quilt, which has helped people throughout the world express, heal and understand the grief resulting from this tragic epidemic.

After her thirteen-year-old daughter was killed by a drunken driver, Candy Lightner used the power of her grief and rage to found Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), to combat the problem and prevent the senseless deaths of other children.

Sojourner Truth, an African-American and former slave, was instrumental in developing the Underground Railway to guide slaves to freedom before and during the American Civil War.

Ron Kovic, paralyzed from the waist down as a soldier in Vietnam, turned first to alcoholism, but then recovered and channeled his resentment and rage into anti-war protest, and later wrote the best selling book and Oscar-winning movie script, Born on the Fourth of July.

A life purpose gives you the means to control your destiny, no matter what the force of the hardships you have incurred. Most of the world's spiritual thinkers have said that the wisdom guiding each of us is available if we just listen and trust what we hear. You may already be having many ideas but not be trusting them or taking them seriously. Perhaps when you get an idea what your "job on earth", or life's purpose is, you are too distrustful of yourself, (I can't do that) or too hopeless and helpless to believe it or act on it. Your purpose may make itself clear to you in one instant flash, or gradually, as if you are following clues, one at a time. Whether you get it all at once or a piece at a time, it will still take work and experience to bring it about. Inner wisdom is not rational or practical in nature, but more intuitive and spiritual. It can provide a way to see the big picture, or a more detached and objective viewpoint of the issues and problems of life. Each new idea must be tested through practical use, to see how it works. Step by step, using both intuitive wisdom and clear thinking, you can bring your inner motivation to the surface and use it to create what you want. Your combination of inspiration expressed through action becomes the bridge to the meaning of your own life. - From It Ends with You

How Do You Know If You Are Living Your Purpose?

As a society, we continuously contemplate the meaning of life. In trying to define the reason for being, we attempt to understand the purpose of our own lives. That said, how do you know your purpose?

Some believe that purpose can be derived from chasing a passion. Oftentimes, people equate passion with activities they enjoy most. However, the most successful people do not limit their life's purpose to activities that only bring pleasure. Their desire to accomplish something great is bigger than any inconvenience life presents. These achievements are made only through a high level of commitment, prevalent in the face of any pain or discomfort.

For example, Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world. When he trains, he pushes himself so hard that he occasionally vomits during his workouts. Though far from pleasurable, the result for him is the ability to break world records in the 100 and 200-meter races. How many are able to say they are willing to endure that extreme in order to become the best at their passion?

Nowadays, many people pursue one aspiration after another. These changes can take place over the course of weeks, months, or years. Consider this: if your passion is your purpose, why would it change?

In other cases, people seek purpose by looking for signs. They wait for events to occur or people to show them the way. However, it would be fair to say that most people go to their grave without ever knowing their life's goal.

Others may have witnessed a sign, but lacked the courage to pursue it. They reassure themselves saying, "it's not the right time" or "I don't have the money to fund my goals". Some wander in circles, needing another sign to prove the first signal was in fact leading them toward their purpose.

Seeking purpose, to say the least, is a complex process. Perhaps it is complicated because we have made it that way. We are conditioned to wait for life's purpose to do something to us. It is no wonder most go to the grave without knowing and experiencing their life's purpose.

To be the best at something requires practice and preparation. In Malcolm Gladwell's book, Outliers, he said those who mastered their craft did so because they practiced for 10,000 hours. That implies practicing in the face of good and bad days. There is no magic to it.

How do you know what to allocate 10,000 hours of practice to? That question may be key to finding one's purpose. Perhaps feeling good or waiting for a sign can be a dead end street. Perhaps the only way to know one's life purpose is to declare it. Instead of waiting for the right moment, take a stand and decide what your purpose will be.

If you say, your life purpose is to be a criminal lawyer, declare it and take action. Perhaps the only key to finding your purpose is right on the tip of your tongue. If you can stand for your own future to be who you say you want to be, you can announce it and practice and prepare to fulfill all the goals that come with that purpose. This approach would allow you to 'live on purpose', instead of 'looking for a purpose'. What purpose will you declare for your life?
