Why We Are Not at Peace

White Dove Spirit Of Peace

Our world is dangerously polarized at a time when humanity is more closely interconnected-politically, economically, and electronically-than ever before.

~Karen Armstrong~

If you look hard, you can find pockets of peace in the world. Maybe you will find one as you walk on the beach in early morning. Shore birds scavenge for bits of food. You amble along listening to the waves breaking and birds calling as you look for interesting shells or collect shark teeth. Waves lap gently on the shore. The sand dries as the tide recedes. The sun gently warms the beach, the birds and you. Right now nature seems at peace. So do the birds. So do you. Maybe you can think of another setting where you have found similar moments of peace. Perhaps yours is in the woods, on top of a mountain or in the desert.

Do you know anyone who lives in peace most of the time? Do you usually live in peace? Even people at peace will experience at least moments of disequilibrium. But most likely they practice what Armstrong describes as the process of using your analytical brain to step back from your emotions. In the process you become more aware of them and how they affect your current experience. She is referring to mindfulness. You might like to try it.

Here's why mindfulness is important. As you progress through your day, events will occur around you. Some events will bring up old feelings which can consume you if you let them. Let's consider an example. Say you are driving to work on a busy highway. The car in the next lane and slightly ahead of you moves suddenly into the lane in front of you without any signal and requires that you move your foot quickly to your brake to avoid a collision. With any luck, you will have your foot on the brake soon enough and won't end up with a crumpled fender. All that might happen before you have a chance to experience any thoughts or feelings about the incident. Your reflexes come to your rescue without any conscious thought process.

One of two things might happen next. You could become filled with rage at the stupidity of the other driver. He almost caused an accident with you as the victim. He should learn to drive better or get off the road. You drive up as close to the other car as you can, blasting your horn to make sure he knows that he upset you and how you feel about it.

Or, after your initial shock, you could be thankful your car was not hit. After your initial anger, you reflect on your emotions. You were scared, but your first reaction was one of anger. You are glad you were watching your car and his, so you could avoid a crash. You realize it's your lucky day.

Which of these is your usual way of reacting? I would guess that the average person would be more likely to react with rage than gratitude. While you could easily justify your anger, what good does it do to fly into a rage and stay that way? If you carry your mood with you throughout the day, it is likely to taint everything else that happens. You can blame the other driver for ruining your day. All you will have is the satisfaction of having an outlet for your anger. You may become so focused on your rage that you bypass opportunities during the day to have productive and enjoyable interactions with others.

At the end of the day, do you want rage to have been your sole focus? You have a choice. You can let your emotions rule you and keep you in a negative space. After all, there is some satisfaction in having someone to blame for the way your day turned out. To be fair, you did not choose to have that close call in your car. But you do have the choice of letting your emotions direct your whole day. It takes some work to get them under control, but it is possible.

Action steps:

  • When was the last time you felt thoroughly at peace?
  • Where was it?
  • What were you doing?
  • Can you find something good in an upsetting situation?
  • Try it next time you have a chance.

Message From the Universe: Choosing the Life You Want to Live

woman in black top

"There once was a time in your very own planet's history, long, long ago, when the earth was truly a paradise. The diversity of life was as mind-boggling as it was spectacular. Flowers sprang up in impossible places. Birds and their songs filled the air over every continent. Snow, fog, showers, or sunshine added sometimes shocking and unexpected beauty to every setting. Animals were loved as family members. And complete strangers smiled and waved to one another, as it was everyone's natural instinct to be kind, to give, and to love.

Yeah, very little has changed.

See the good,
The Universe"

We all need to get back to how it was before, in a distant Universe, a long long time ago. Times have changed, I understand that. What was before can't be the same as it is today. With terrorism, kidnapping, murders. violence, and so much more, it is difficult to live in peace without fearing for our lives. It will be impossible to be nice to our assailant when they stop us to be violent or take our life. We will fight back and probably commit crime during self-defense. It can be difficult to not feel anger and frustration when the justice system can throw you in jail just because a criminal broke into your house and got hurt by you during the process. How can we show love and kindness to someone who is there to inflict pain or worst, take our life?

Nothing will be the same as it was before. However, these act of random kindness can be given to the people that deserve it and that are not mean in nature. Yes, there are tons of criminals, rapist, murderers, and hopefully most of them are behind bars. For the rest of the people who are circling around you have good nature, good soul and deserve to receive random act of kindness. If you take that first step of being kind, the rest will follow accordingly and people will notice and would want to repeat the same. Once it catches on, you will be surprised of the ripple effect.

Stimulating Your Creativity So As to Live in Peace

Resting one's mind is not so easy nowadays with so many issues arising in the news. There's much that we can do to help others; yet, the world sometimes seems out of control. Perhaps we all should do that which is within our reach so as to make this world a better place. However, an additional dose of creativity will soothe the mind while illuminating the thoughts of others. Creative endeavors, ranging from crafts to music to drawing, help the artist relax. If one thinks outside of the box and aspires to create, she will also spark interest in those around her.

When a creator feels she must invent a new object or write a new book, it gives her a motive to wake up each morning. She works very hard to achieve that goal rather than to give up on life in passive acceptance of the mundane activities of the majority. Art, music, writing, as well as other creations give people good reasons to live. Such creations stimulate conversation between people of various backgrounds as art provides a common meeting place that transcends nations and continents.

If you don't have any idea about how to utilize your creativity, you might brainstorm so as to make a list of all of your interests. You might pursue woodcraft, calligraphy, or collage. You might prefer reading poetry aloud or acting in a theatrical group. Whatever you do, make certain that you apply the technique of assemblage (linking things and events together in new and unique ways). Although we think of assemblage as being the art of connecting objects that have been collected, I would like to propose the use of an assemblage of the imagination. By looking for connections between all that happens in our lives, we can assemble the events together in a manner that reveals the importance of birth from the spontaneity of randomness. Ultimately, others will find interconnected meaning in their cut-and-paste efforts to understand the workings of the inner mind.Such creative connections should stimulate better communication and worldwide peace.
