Internal Motivation VS External Motivation - The "Secret" To Monumental Success

The biggest problem for most people is they are externally motivated.

This means they focus on "things" external to them, such as cars, houses, clothes, technology (computers/phones), games etc. Whilst everyone is guilty of this to a certain degree, the best people are internally motivated.

Internal motivation sounds new-age woo-woo so I'll explain what it is.

Say you have a burning desire to fly. Or maybe you want to go to the moon and see what it's like to walk in zero gravity. Perhaps you're an artist. You could be a musician. Everyone has an underlying idea / ideal which makes their soul burn with passion. This is internal motivation.

In almost every case of monumental success (epoch defining), we find one core ideal lying at the heart of the individual's desire to risk their entire life upon a series of events that lead up to the eventual achievement of their goal. Some of the more pertinent would be Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Hannibal and even Hitler.

To take these examples, we can actually examine them as we would other people...

Alexander wanted to see what lay beyond the "outer ocean". Ancient Greeks believed the world was essentially a donut with a huge "outer ocean" surrounding the land (they obviously had not discovered the Americas or the poles at this point). His conquests were simply his way of trying to get to this ocean and see what lay beyond.

Caesar wanted to be like Alexander. A vain and ambitious man, we already know that he was as shrewd political operator. Born into a demi noble (patrician) family 50+ years before Jesus, many contemporaries described him as arrogant. It wasn't until he was 32, however, that Caesar encountered a statue of Alexander the Great when he was service as Quaestor in Spain. It is reported (by Plutarch) that Caesar broke down and wept - when confronted, he replied "I have not just cause to weep, when I consider that Alexander at my age had conquered so many nations, and I have all this time done nothing that is memorable?". Shortly afterwards, he returned to Rome to pursue greater political aspirations.

Hannibal invaded Italy in an attempt to subdue the fledgling Roman city state. In a time just after Alexander the Great, and around 150/200 years before Julius Caesar, Hannibal's "Second Punic War" was a huge upset in the region. Despite being best known for taking an army - with elephants - over the Alps, Hannibal's military victories far outshine this stunning feat. However, it would not have been possible had it not been for his father - Hamilcar Barca - who forced Hannibal to swear that he would destroy Rome when he was just 6 years old. Obviously, the young Hannibal took his oath to heart.

Adolf Hitler is interesting. Firstly, the raving madman many people seem him to be is a false post-war propaganda play. When you look at the man, you see someone fraught with internal conflict and a longing for acceptance in a world where he felt he was "special". What's vital about Hitler is the way in which his political ascent was triggered by his time on the Western Front. Upon hearing of the armistice in 1918, he was fraught with despair. Whilst this "trigger" was interesting, what actually lay at the root of his experience was an opera called Rienzi. The original manuscript has been lost (Hitler owned it and it was lost after the war)... but from what we know, it's Wagner's story about how a lowly Roman Plebian rose through the ranks of a corrupt government to lift his populace out of servitude.

The point of all this is that at the core of ALL massive success lies an underlying "trigger". This trigger is typically the ignition for something much deeper. This deeper ideal is what you really want but have either been told - or in many cases have identified yourself - as being something you can "never do". In other words, the "trigger" gives you a justification to actually pursue your true intentions.

The first step to becoming majorly successful is to first understand what you REALLY want out of life. As mentioned, if you want to "fly", there are many "ways" through which this can be achieved... becoming a pilot being one.

As most people never spend 2 minutes thinking about this type of thing, they never give themselves permission to consider it at all. This is why they live lives of silent desperation... consuming until they die.

Indeed, our modern world - devoid of heroes like they had in Ancient Greece - is now focused squarely on making as many people as high-powered consumers as possible. Everything will be fine just as long as you're a good tax & debt slave.

If you want to achieve monumental success, you WILL have to do "the work". Of that, there is no doubt.

However, if you want to be one of the "few" who truly make it, you need to consider what you really want. This is not something logical... you can't really "say" what it is. It's just a feeling you have. Again, everyone has one - the question is whether you have the courage to bring it to reality.

What Drives Happiness?

It is often said that satisfaction and contentedness lead to lasting happiness.

I disagree.

If anything, the opposite is necessary to be happy in life. The want - the drive - to be more, do more, facilitates the actualization of an exquisite state of passion.

The 'state of passion' defined as happiness.

Happiness isn't in having more, rather is a by-product of the process, the effort, the work that one puts in to make oneself better. Happiness that comes from the realisation of a goal is short-lived, followed by an emptiness, a hunger, only to be satiated by the gratification of the self with the realisation of a new goal. An unstable loop that we often get stuck in.

Happiness isn't in the realisation of the goal it's in the pursuit.

Happiness doesn't come from owning things, it comes from the experiences they enable us to have.

Those who base their happiness on having more than others will never be happy because there will always be someone who will have something more than you. That something is often defined as money. The conundrum isn't whether this hypothesis is right or wrong - for some, it is, for some it isn't.

The conundrum is how that 'something' ended up being money in the universally accepted social framework.

Of all the things you can pay for happiness, money is by far the cheapest.

Probably, because as humans we tend to define everything in the lowest possible denominator and in this case (happiness) - it was money. It's evident, easy to measure, compare, etc. But juxtaposing amplitude of wealth with well being is a very trivial/crude approach to decoding the human nature.

A deeper probe would reveal, however, that we human beings have complete control over defining this MacGuffin. Each person has the ability to define and pursue their own objective - one that will to a certain degree affect the perception of happiness they have erected around themselves.

So now the question is

How do we define the prime directive for our own happiness?

How do we assign values to the variables in our lives?

Chasing which goals will make us the happiest?

I believe there is no universal answer. Each of us has to define their own and then derive happiness from its pursuit.

Deriving this goal and defining the pursuit is something that will come from looking inward, empathising with the self and separating that one voice from the noise that is the humdrum of everyday life.

Living a Precious Life

I spoke with a friend this morning. She explained to me that she likes to fantasize about being free of her physical body and soaring effortlessly in the etheric realms. She sounded bored with her life and over whelmed with the responsibilities of her day- to- day existence. She wistfully described her longing to be free of all the emotional pain, boredom and the numerous duties associated with being in human form. I listened with an open heart and mind, and thought to myself, how very sad that my friend is missing the magic of each moment and the surprises that life can bring.

I reflected on our conversation and realized that she must be overwhelmed with the prospect of her life continuing to be the way that it is now and always being stuck in the grind. Although from the outside her life looks pretty successful. She works in the helping profession, has a devoted husband, good health and owns her own home. Nevertheless, she is unhappy with the monotony of paying bills, cleaning house and being a good wife. The boredom of her daily routine seems unbearable. She has lost the spark of remembering the preciousness of each moment. How I wondered, can she regain her enthusiasm for living?

Then three words starting with the letter 'p' popped into my head. I heard my higher self say "Purpose, passion and play are the ways to counteract boredom and being overly responsible and create a solution to living life in a more meaningful way. When a person aligns their work with their core values then there is a special grace that happens as they do their work. For example, if somebody values helping the Earth and they work in a field that prevents pollution then they are living an inspired purposeful life through their work. On the other hand, if a person values caring for the Earth and they work in a field that harms Mother Earth, then they will most likely feel depleted and drained from their work and lack a sense of purpose.

Next, if there is passion connected to how one spends their time in life time in life, then they will feel life becomes more valuable and significant. Passion carries a quality of putting ambition into action with heart. In other words, if you are excited about what you are doing and are willing to go the extra mile to sacrifice whatever it takes to get the job well done then you are living passionately. For example, the writer who stays up until the wee hours of the morning because they are so inspired by the written word coming through them that they sacrifice sleep for passion.The opposite would be the person who dreads going to work and feels tired and weary of their job so much so that they can barely get up in the morning.

Finally, the third remedy to boredom and over work is play. Having a playful approach to one's duties and responsibilities brings a fresh outlook. When a person takes time to balance play and enjoying themselves with the duties of life, then they come alive and reconnect with their joyful nature buried within. A simple solution like going to see a funny movie or enjoying an improve comedy night could be the anecdote to the doldrums of an overly responsible life. When one takes time to nurture their playful child within, they are less resentful of the adult responsibilities of living and more able to cope with the day- to- day stresses of life.

I called my friend back and invited her to consider the possibility that life is offering her an opportunity to make new choices. I reminded her that her passion is important and her purpose of helping humanity is still pure and can be resurrected in her work. I also suggested she take time to play and plan some joyful activities into her life. The magic of life is so much more fun when shared with a friend and life can be full of happy surprises when we remember how precious life is.

How many times have you wished you were smarter, younger, fitter, slimmer and better? And why?

I often observe intelligent people who do well in life and intelligent people who don't. I have met beautiful individuals who are well liked and successful, but I have also met countless of miserable beauties. I have seen slim people full of happiness, and I have also seen slim people drowning in depression.

So, do you have to look good to feel good? Do you have to look good to do well? Of course you don't! If you want people to be drawn to you, you need something else.

When it comes to being attractive, be it in your social, sexual or professional life, the first thing to look at is your personal confidence; second one is the degree to which you live out your passion.

Surely, there is nothing attractive about a slim beauty that is self-conscious, feels lost and doesn't have any interests or passion. People are drawn to interesting people full of life. Vitality is contagious and attractive. Emptiness and self-consciousness are boring and tiring. If you live life purposefully and passionately, you will be like a magnet to other people and you will certainly reap great success in your life.

Have you seen fashion shows? What's attractive about the models on the runway is the confidence they project. Even though sometimes they wear ridiculous clothes, funny hairdos and cold expressions on their faces, they still come off as extremely attractive simply because they carry themselves with confidence (which may or may not be authentic but that's a different story).

So the rule goes like that: the more confident and purposeful you are, the more attractive to other people you will look. Of course the personal confidence is bound to also get reflected in your physical appearance: the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you dress, and the way you take care of yourself overall. But confidence and passion come first. Without those, your looks are "empty". With no life in your body you are not a very interesting person, therefore people won't be interested in you, they won't be drawn to you.

Have you heard the old saying "Beauty comes from within"? Well, it does! So if you want to look attractive and be successful (sexually, socially and professionally), you need to be confident and purposeful in life.

15 Minutes - Let It Be This Day

What sounds of anguish must pierce the air, filtered through the darkness of a starlit night or within the sunbeams in search of someone, anyone who cares? Profound they are, even the silent screams that signal the suffering of one who feels hopeless; those who no longer believe they can change a result. Cherished dreams that have disappeared through the passage of time, self-respect corroded through continued failures, abilities and talents corrupted, lost through misuse, inconceivable potential bartered for fool's gold or the final loss of someone precious are burrowed into the anguish that spills forth. We arrive at this lonely pain filled place when we accept that we must face the unacceptable and believe it to be an undeniable end. Let it be this day that you know your cries arrived and were carefully enfolded into the arms of a loving Creator. If 15 minutes could alter the course would you try?

We celebrate passion in people, yet passions can quickly become habits, the door that invites us into addiction. Addictions are often born when we embrace with abandon ideals, work, people, places, alcohol and drugs; even the pursuit to be healthy. Anything or anyone we believe we cannot live without can become an addiction. This happens when our emotions become so enmeshed we can no longer be objective or walk away. It is likely that we all have addictive personalities. Some are considered to be normal or 'good for us,' avoiding the stigma of addiction.

Human receptors that control the urges that propel you back to what you wish to could let go of lasts a mere 15 minutes. Every time you think you can't do it you are 15 minutes from success. Most people acknowledge they could do anything they have to do for that amount of time. Every habit, belief or person that grips or binds you to a something you hope to stop, change or leave behind may be altered or even broken if you are willing to pause for 15 minutes, change the frequency you are riveted to and refocus your attention. It is necessary to look away; anything you look at or focus on is growing in intensity. The same energy that can propel you to enormous success binds you to things that can no longer serve you. Take the time; let it be this day that freedom beckons. Accept the invitation to really live again.

If you are tempted to look in the rear view mirror and rationalize why you thought this was a good idea when it began stop wasting your precious time. If you need to make a change the intentions that led you to a painful path no longer matter. Alter your course and remember that your very existence is a miracle. For a human to change their mind requires a miracle. That is two miracles before you begin. Use wisely your power of choice as you embark on a new journey. Let it be this day.

Break down large goals into manageable steps. Many times our goals are lofty, which is a good thing. However large goals can seem unattainable, causing you to become daunted and lose motivation. Before you start any large project or goal, break it down into smaller steps. Get as detailed as you can. Soon you will be well on your way to success.

Head off procrastination and sluggishness with a healthier diet. Stay away from foods high in saturated fat such as hamburgers and french fries. Fatty foods cause fatigue, sluggishness and fatigue, as well as slower thinking. This makes it tough to stay focused and get through all of the tasks on our to-do list.

Make sure that you are well-rested. Working when you're tired can really make your work sloppy and it can really stress you out. It's also not that great for your health. Sometimes, even taking a nap can clear your head and you can be more productive after you wake up.

What I Was Like, What Happened, and What Life's Like Now (By Steve Wickham)


I'll never forget the moment of hypocritical fear driving to work hungover to breathalyse fuel tanker drivers. Or, the time I was once again racked with guilt for smacking a daughter so hard it left the welts of my fingers on the back of her leg. Or, for that matter, the time I left my then wife all alone at a work dinner function, so I could investigate a theft at a service station in another state.

Those heady days in 2003 were a far cry from the heady days in 2004. March 23rd and 24th of both years provide the stark contrast. 2003 I am drunk and stoned at home with my family celebrating Australia's victory over India in the cricket World Cup Final, and hungover the next day, I fly to Melbourne for a Shell Oil Company national conference. 2004 I'm in a completely different job, the Gold frequent flyer card gone, attending Bible study, and I go home alone, my family in another man's hands.

Such contrasts. So materially blessed one year, career going well, family seemingly happy, by all appearances living the 'good' life. So materially vanquished the next, left with nothing of the former life, lonely oh so lonely, but with a passion for parenting and a heart on fire for God.

One year I was a hypocrite high on the preciously regular margins, the next I was a man with integrity and nothing to show for it.

I deserved for that old life to end. It was the best thing that could've happened. I couldn't see it at the time, of course. I was too broken, too upended, too blindsided to know God was doing me a favour.

And such favour was not for my favour, but for the Kingdom's favour. A poorly run life is not rewarded by favour unless there is repentance. I'd been far from a satisfactory husband (as I look back from this man's viewpoint). I'd been a father too frequently in those two preceding years who was present (when he was not travelling) only in body, not in mind or heart or soul.

What happened? I was given an abrupt awakening. Life changed overnight on September 22nd. On the 22nd I was married with a beautiful family home and three daughters, and on the 23rd I was a single man living the mission of his life in trying to win back his wife with limited access to his children. The first step was an AA meeting. This followed an AA meeting the following night, a Wednesday night, and then another meeting on the Thursday. I didn't know what had hit me.

All up in the eleven months until August 2004 I attended 160 AA meetings and shared at most of them. That's about 20 hours of saying, 'Hello everyone, my name's Steve and I'm an alcoholic... ' I've been sober ever since - nearly fifteen years of sobriety.

Sure, I hadn't been jailed because of my drunken sprees, but I had found a way to drink to excess three to four nights per week just to manage stress and feel good for ten years. I just loved the life of pleasure after work. I loved jet setting the state and country at the company's expense. And I was also a comparative workaholic. I had learned to give the company everything and my family relatively nothing.

A year on, and I was on a fast-track to ministry - to the giving of my life to the Lord for His use - even if I still pined so much for my former world to re-envelope me. It wasn't to be. The door had swung shut to a life I so desperately wanted. The door had opened to something I was reluctant to walk through.

I was once a back-slidden Christian who hadn't really found God, I found God through utter rejection and sheer brokenness, and I was given a pastor's heart for faith, repentance and reconciliation.

The Universe Is More Invested In Your Personal Growth Than Your Happiness

Happiness Is A By-Product Of The Growth Achieved

Everyone desires to be happy because life is empty if we are unhappy. But we needn't place happiness above our personal growth, and here's why. The primary function of the universe is growth and expansion.

Now, just so I'm clear, I'm not suggesting happiness is something we mustn't strive for. Every person must endeavour to find happiness in their lives, whether through their purpose, passion or fulfilling their creative goals.

What I'm proposing is that the life will place a greater importance on our personal growth than our happiness. Because the universe is constantly expanding and developing, it will favour change and growth through every living thing.

Life is invested in our growth in proportion to the expansion taking place in the universe. If you are not convinced of this, simply look to mother nature, in which the animal kingdom and the environment are constantly changing.

I agree that while happiness is a worthwhile aim, it does not serve the universe's function of expansion as much as our personal growth. Is this an idea you're willing to embrace on some level? I know you have questions and perhaps you might disagree with some of what I've said, and that's okay.

The key is to awaken a growth mindset and consider your life through a different lens. Like you, I believed attaining happiness was my primary role. But in pursuing happiness, the less happy I was.

I couldn't hold on to it, no matter how hard I tried. Not that I was depressed or lacking; it just seemed elusive. Moreover, when I thought I had found happiness, it would slip through my hands.

Around this time, I undertook intense research into happiness. I worked with clinical psychologists in mentoring programs, to better understand the human condition. I read hundreds of books on the topic and attended seminars by esteemed experts in the area.

There was one key element that kept surfacing throughout my research. It was the idea that when we pursue personal growth, happiness is a by-product of the growth achieved. We cannot interrupt the process, otherwise we don't see the benefits.

You can be unhappy, yet experience enormous personal growth because happiness comes later, once your level of awareness and consciousness has increased. Clearly, you're invested in your personal growth if you are taking time out to read this article. Part of you identifies with the growth and expansion of your inner being.

Therefore, the universe will place your happiness secondary to your growth, to ensure its aim of expansion is complete. It is more invested in your growth because it serves life's function of expansion.

Again, I'm not suggesting we don't pursue happiness because it is evident throughout our relationships, purpose, career, goals and other areas. Happiness is a notable and worthwhile pursuit.

I'm implying that growth is higher in importance because from growth emerges happiness. Furthermore, happiness is not our primary role in life because if it were, why are so many people unhappy? Are you beginning to see that investing in yourself can lead to a happier and fulfilling life?

Focus On Personal Growth Without Sacrificing Happiness

Dr David Hawkins, a consciousness researcher and psychiatrist, believed that by elevating our consciousness, it can affect many thousands of people. He outlined a map of consciousness chart, the calibration values of each level.

He believed that one individual at level 700, counterbalances 70 million individuals below level 200. One individual at level 600 counterbalances 10 million individuals below level 200. One individual at level 500 counterbalances 750,000 individuals below level 200.

One individual at level 400 counterbalances 400,000 individuals below level 200. One individual at level 300 counterbalances 90,000 individuals below level 200. Twelve individuals at level 700 equal one avatar at 1,000.

Only 15% of the world's population is above the critical level of 200. That 15% has the weight to counterbalance the negativity of the remaining 85% of the world's people. Were it not for these counterbalances, humanity would self-destruct out of the sheer mass of negativity.

You can clearly see why personal growth is fundamental to your life and the survival of our species. So, what can we do to focus on our personal growth without sacrificing our happiness?

It involves focusing on our passion and purpose and living our highest aspirations. Second, we ought to invest in our personal growth regularly. This requires healing our traumas and wounds to transform the past. We ought to practise forgiveness, which must include ourselves. We must strive to find inner peace, even in situations we regard as unpleasant. Finally, we ought to express gratitude for the smallest things because they become amplified, the more we focus on them.

It is with this understanding; I invite you to write 3 to 5 things you could do to enhance your personal growth. It might involve being mindful of your thoughts and negative emotions. You might choose to forgive those you've held resentment or anger towards. It might mean making peace with the past or changing your beliefs about it.

Sadly, critics are everywhere these days and hide behind their uncertainties wishing they were in the limelight. They are not only people, but the inner critic within us. Sometimes, the critic appears masquerading as a family member, a loved one or a close friend. A snarky remark here and there leaves you bewildered as to their intended message. Can you identify with this narrative of the unassuming critic?

Critics come with the territory of leadership, particularly when a person advances in their career or personal life. As my mentor often reminds me: "The higher the monkey climbs the tree, the more of his butt you'll see." Meaning, the higher the ladder of success is climbed, the more exposed you are to being judged, however that should not deter you from reaching for success. Critics are frustrated people whose time is yet to come. Let me be clear, I am not talking about those whose job it is to write about theatre plays. I am referring to those who sit on the sidelines not willing to enter the arena.

I'm reminded of an inspiring passage from a speech delivered in Paris in 1910 by the 26th President of the United States of America, Theodore Roosevelt. Titled The Man In The Arena, the short excerpt underlines how critics have little place judging those daring greatly: "It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

Greatness Is A Recipe Not Served To All Men

This is not a story about critics but something more. It is about acknowledging the person who dares greatly. Those vulnerable willing to scale new heights and put their reputation on the line. This is an ode to the individual who enters the arena and though they may stumble and fall, they know there is no greater service than to follow their passion and purpose. The credit belongs to those who risk defeat, humiliation and yet are purposeful in their conviction towards success. Whilst they may encounter setbacks, their cause is greater than the critics who looks down on them with disdain. Have you received unwarranted criticism in your life? How did you respond and did it affect you? Sometimes, those we expect to be our chariot of hope will let us down, however this mustn't deter us from achieving excellence.

Greatness is a meal not savoured by all men because some do not have the hunger for it, even if it were served on a silver platter. Greatness stems from working diligently and tenaciously towards our dreams, our goals and highest aspirations. It is the victor who enjoys the spoils not the critic who laments from afar. This is the message echoed by the great American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote in We Are the Builders of Our Fortunes: Success through Self-Reliance: "What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and in intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."

Daring greatly arises from a firm resolve and a resolute will. It is why critics abound because not all men are equipped with these virtues. The critic wishes from afar while the champion wrestles with greater powers. The battle is not for everyone and why it requires somebody with a heart forged of steel-a daring hero advancing forward even when things appear grim. I believe there are two types of people in the world: the champions and the critics. Which of these protagonists do you identify with? I trust by reading this article you associate with the former and are intrigued by awakening your greatest power? Perhaps it lays dormant or you have yet to rouse its potential, nevertheless I assure you it is there. Don't wait another minute to step into your greatness otherwise you risk becoming a fallen comrade, a critic who wonders why success eluded them. It is the presence of your soul combined with the totality of all you've experienced, and it empowers to live at optimal levels.

Passion your natural state. When what you do is in alignment with who you are, it increases your energy. Passion is like water flowing along its natural riverbed, gaining momentum from its course - unlike many work environments, where it feels more like trying to force water up and over a mountain!

Passion creates resilience. It enables you to overcome obstacles and to look beyond current setbacks to the infinite potential that's yours to claim. The passionate soul discovers nuggets of potential in every situation.

Passion transfers vibrant energy to every person or situation it touches. You can't fake it. Anyone can spot a phony by sensing lack of authenticity and depth in their actions.

And yet, many people run from passion because they're afraid of being burned. Instead, they opt for a more predictable, monochromatic existence. Rather than taking exploring the endless possibilities of life, they insist on hiding inside a safety bubble; giving up on adventure to exist in a sanitary, colorless world where nothing new happens.

What they really need is to restore their passion!

If you want a juicy life, you need to open your heart and mind to the multidimensional experience of passionate living every day.

Can you imagine how much more meaningful our roles as parents, lovers, business owners, employees, teachers and leaders would be if all our actions were predicated on our true passion? There is no limit to how far your influence can reach! To tap into your potential, you must engage life with passion. By bringing passion to what you do, you express every aspect of your creative being.

Here's the secret to living a passionate life: Never try to throttle down your passion for fear of what might show up! You cannot selectively suppress some part of your being without also suppressing the rest of your energy. When you suppress your passion, you also suppress your Life Force.

Truth is, every activity you engage in expresses the whole of you - much like one part of a hologram reflects the whole in its entirety. Even if you pick a narrow skill like running a marathon or cooking, your whole sense of self is expressed through that activity when doing it with passion.

When living from your passion, you bring your entire identity to the party, not just an isolated part. This may sound daunting, but actually it's the most natural way to approach anything.

When you hold some part of yourself back, you deny it exposure to life; you repress its energy and keep it from learning what it needs to know. Imagine a baby who wants to learn how to walk but has these reservations:

  • I don't want to look bad.
  • I don't want to fall down.
  • I don't want to fail.
  • I don't want to expend all my energy.
  • I don't want any pain.
  • I don't want to suffer.

It would seem absurd! If these thoughts prevail, the chance for mastery could never present itself. Yet as adults we resort to such reservations all the time - and deny ourselves mastery as a result.

The minute a situation arises, all the negatives around that situation will arise in the mind along with all the possibilities. The key is that you have a choice about which to focus on!

When you choose to focus on negatives, you yield to subconscious fear to shut out understanding. Do that often enough and you become a victim, subject to bewildering fears that can threaten to overwhelm you. These fears aren't coming from blind fate or misfortune; they simply represent holes in your awareness, the places where you haven't dared to look yet.

To break free from such self-limiting behavior, try looking at an issue that has kept you from totally engaging in life. For instance, if you are worried about what others may think of your effort, then that is the issue you need to challenge!

When I launched out into a solo practice, well-intended friends questioned whether I would make it in a highly demanding field. I chose not to listen to the voices of apprehension; instead, I redoubled my efforts because my passion is to help people.

At the time, it was the scariest, riskiest, most challenging thing I could think of doing with my life. It was also the one thing that kept me dreaming and working against all odds. Today, I can look back at decades of amazing outcomes and success.

Choosing to follow my passion took me to the edge of my comfort zone and stretched me in every way possible. It also brought growth, joy and fulfillment into every area of my life. I wouldn't trade what I'm doing for the world, because I get to use my innate gifts daily. I love living in alignment with my purpose and my passion!

Quitting is easy though we rarely achieve anything when we abandon our goals. Knowing that, take a moment to reflect on something you're contemplating giving up on right now. It may be career related, health or otherwise. Why do you want to give up? Is it the only way? Have you considered other options? Once you've had a moment to reflect on it, think about why you undertook the goal in the first place. It might be that having a passion or purpose makes it harder to quit because of the emotional investment required to achieve it. Sometimes, we undertake goals we don't resonate with but fill a void in our life. Pursuing a goal or a dream ought to provide us with a sense of value and meaning in our lives, otherwise we're less likely to see it through. Does this make sense, insofar as being committed to the goal instead of wishing for something better to come along?

To go through life quitting weakens our character and erodes our self-esteem since we become habituated to taking the easy way out. As you know, life is not meant to be a bed of roses, nor is it riddled with pain and suffering. When we make choices aligned with our core values and highest intent, we are likely to pursue actions aligned with them. Sometimes, chasing after a goal or dream means toiling away in the trenches, for months, if not years with no respite. Occasionally, it requires walking away from situations that no longer serve us or our core purpose. This is difficult because there are no assurances we're making the right choice. The one measure we have is whether it feels right. Our emotions become our barometer if we're in it for the right reasons.

To achieve anything substantial requires hard work, determination and a resolute will to overcome the obstacles and challenges that lay ahead. It requires facing our demons and wrestling with them repeatedly. It involves revisiting the past and dredging up baggage we thought we once healed. I don't believe life has a timeline for us because sometimes we must gain knowledge, wisdom and understanding which cannot be rushed. Just as a flower blooms at the right time, so do the fruits of our labour when the conditions are right. To quit means to throw away the time and energy invested pursuing a goal. What I'm saying is: We mustn't allow difficult moments to define whether we will achieve our goals and dreams. This is the advice echoed by the American psychologist and author Angela Duckworth who writes in her bestselling book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance: "Many of us, it seems, quit what we start far too early and far too often. Even more than the effort a gritty person puts in on a single day, what matters is that they wake up the next day, and the next, ready to get on that treadmill and keep going."

Nothing Substantial Comes Easily

Invariably, we will face difficult moments and make tough decisions anyway, so we might as well be doing it pursuing our passions and aspirations. How does this idea appeal to you? Can you see how sticking with something long term can be a great benefit to you? It's worth rendering a caveat here that sometimes we ought to quit when things are not working out. I don't intend the advice in this article to mean you mustn't ever give up. The message is simple: if you are passionate about something and you want it, find a way to get it and let go of why you can't have it.

In this wicked world of illusion, sometimes miracles can happen overnight. Life works in mysterious ways and when least expected. Circumstances can fall into place only if we labour and toil away at our respective goal. Nothing substantial comes easily and if it does, it is likely to slip from our hands just as quickly. For example, if you're in a relationship that has run its course, your only option may be to walk away from it, but what about investing the time and energy to work it out? Might it be in your best interest to keep trying before you quit? I don't have the answers and neither will you until you embark on the hard work which can be tiresome and plain ugly. The hard work is not cut out for everyone and this is why many people quit ahead of time. Decide on what you want for your life and create the structure and foundation for it to rest on. Do everything in your power to complete the task, the goal or dream and then if you want to give up, at least you will have a compelling reason to do so.

Meaningful work is about more than just doing a job to collect a paycheck. What gives our work meaning is doing something that serves something or others beyond ourselves.

What's meaningful is unique to each individual. Some people can find meaning in their work by simply shifting their perspective. For work to be meaningful, you need to understand the "why" behind your work. Try thinking beyond what you're doing to who or what is helped or enriched by what you do. In what ways is your work important?

  • You're spending your time in work that aligns with your values.
  • You're more engaged with your work, so job satisfaction rises.
  • You're more excited to get to work each day.

When It Goes Beyond Meaning

Sometimes work can be meaningful, but other factors interfere with the satisfaction one would expect. I experienced that in my career as a lower elementary Montessori teacher when there was a management change in the school. Teachers were being asked to do more paperwork, which could have been accomplished in a more streamlined fashion. Input from teachers on many issues weren't valued. The entire work environment became more restricted, so it left little room for innovation.

When the work environment grates against your personal style, it erodes job satisfaction, even when doing meaningful work.

Be aware of your own work style and see where you can negotiate some changes. There may also be ways you can find the wiggle room to create more freedom to work according to your own style. If not, it may be time to consider a different environment.

But nothing can compare with the joy of achieving one's goal.

There are people who are famous today because they did not abandon their ambitions. Nobody believed that a blind boy like David Hartman would become a doctor one day. He was discouraged by family and friends. His applications for admission to various medical colleges were ignored until Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia decided to give him a chance. The obstacles that seemed insurmountable were conquered through sheer determination and David completed his course successfully. Those who doubted a blind man's ability to complete such a rigorous course had to admit that David Hartman was 'supernormal.'

Bettina Bechgaard a 19 year old Ballet dancer who was to perform at the Sadler Wells Theatre in London, was knocked down by a car that left her with multiple fractures of her limbs and in a semi-comatose condition. But her fierce determination through grinding weeks of pain set her back on her dancing feet after a long period of recuperation. Through physiotherapy, psychotherapy and counseling, Bettina was back to dancing. Her strong ambition took control of her body and enabled her to perform pirouettes and other intricate steps. Nobody even noticed the hint of a wobble at times.

Poverty did not dampen the ambitions of many famous writers, who early in life had to struggle to survive, yet never succumbed to defeat. In his autobiography "Tell the Tale," Gabriel Garcia Marquez tells how he was desperate to write and be read. He kept scraps of paper in his pocket and kept writing through his penury and hardships. He even had to borrow a typewriter to type out his manuscripts. The world cheers at his rise to fame.

Stephen King the famous author was so poor that he had to borrow clothes for his wedding. He lived in a caravan with his wife on a hand-to-mouth existence. But poverty did not turn him away from his ambition of writing. Today he is one of the best known and richest of writers.

The story of J. K. Rowling's rise to fame is unbelievable. She had to type out the manuscript of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' which was 90,0000 words long, on an old type writer. Each time she was rejected, she had to type the manuscript all over again, and the rejections were many. To her good luck the daughter of the CEO of Bloomsbury read the story and loved it. Since then Rowling has never looked back.

It is said that "The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight. But they, while their companions slept, were toiling upwards through the night."

Qualities of an ambitious person:

- He is the architect and builder of his life.

- He is organized, focused and self-motivated.

- He is persistent. "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again."

- He keeps his ears and eyes open for new ideas.

- He makes the best of the opportunities that come his way to enhance his personal development and growth.

How to stay true to one's ambition.

- Believe in the tremendous potential in every human being.

- Believe in yourself and be spurred on by your desire to excel.

- Define your values and goals.

- Chalk out workable plans to achieve your dreams.

- Never quit.

Some people have bad ambitions. They have a one-track mind to achieve wealth and power no matter on whose feet they trample and how many lives they destroy. This is not ambition but greed.

Joseph Conrad says "All ambitions are lawful except those which climb upwards on the miseries and credulities of mankind."

Oprah Winfrey who is now a famous superstar with her own TV Network is an example of somebody with ambition and drive. She fought her way through racism, sexual abuse, and obesity to educate herself and work her way to the top.

There once was a man, Jack, who worked very hard in his job. He had gone to school in an area of interest and got a job working in a like industry. He found a good wife and they had 3 wonderful children. Life was good in his adult years, but he found himself feeling like he was just on the treadmill of life. He got up every morning, he went to a job that he liked but where he longed for a break, some type of long-awaited vacation. He had lost most of his hobbies, due to the time restraints of working many hours at his job, balanced with trying to take care of and spend time with his family. The dreams Jack had talked about in his youth (travel, starting his own business, becoming an armature golf player, winning fantasy football, etc.) were still in the back of his mind, but only faintly. Jack had a successful life by American standards (income, job, home, family, etc.), but he did not jump out of bed in the morning: he did not have a spring in his step and he seemed to carry a high level of stress. In general, he was happy, but not HAPPY.

This is a story of a man with a great life, but of a man who is lacking PASSION.

What is passion?

Webster defines passion as "a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object, or concept."

I define passion as an internal subconscious emotional calling that fuels the perspective, focus and actions you take as you live life and fulfill your purpose in life.

Passion is not obvious, like the ability to throw a football, being a gifted musician or a talented craftsman, or living as an amazing inventor. Passion is not on a conscious level, something that you are thinking about daily and noticing. Passion is more "energetic" in nature and therefore hard to see.

People say they are passionate about their kids, families, hobbies, etc. While these are all admirable, I would say these are interests that bring joy and pleasure. They may also be the tip of your passion or an indicator of your passion. While passion is a common word to describe an emotional state of liking something a lot, the passion we are talking about here is a much bigger concept. Here, it is about the core attributes that drive you and get you excited about life and living.

It is also important to recognize that people often confuse passion with purpose. As I see it, purpose is the vehicle that you ride because of your passion: your purpose is what you do (ex. playing sports, writing music, reading literature, or parenting.). Passion is the fuel and energy that you use to drive: passion is how you are fueled (ex. by creativity, by problem-solving, or by helping people).

Passion is the internal fire burning inside you as a result of using your natural gifts, talents, and purpose here on earth. You have passion before you use it, but it is like a match unlit. Passion gets lit when you use your gifts, talents, and purpose and results in personal fulfillment and "life in the flow," where everything works together and every area of your life is filled with joy, contentment, and synergy.

Why have passion? Is it possible that everyone has a passion or are some people just more "emotional"?

Passion is seen as you look out into the world and selflessly allow yourself to be an instrument, using your gifts and talents. As you do this, you will begin to see your reflection and therefore more readily identify your passion. After you identify your passion, by experiencing the lit fire inside, you are able to focus in and use those gifts and talents more - your purpose and passion are united and drive the most fulfilling adventure of your life!

The reward of living a life of passion is incredible! Once you have tasted it, you will crave for its return. It is an amazing overflowing of your heart, body, mind, and soul. You have energy, direction, purpose, and focus. As humans, we all want this, but sometimes it seems too hard to achieve, so we give up, and decide to just enjoy what life gives us.

"What life gives us?" I ask. Don't be fooled, we are not here on earth to be floating down a river on an inner tube, just passively taking in what life has to offer. You will not find passion in that inner tube. You might hit some rapids and get a little taste of it here and there, however, if you want to know what living a life of passion means and is, you have to go look for it.

Life can dish out some hard knocks, tough lessons, challenges, and adversity. How you handle those are up to you. You see, there is a quote that states, "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% what you do with it." The more you can look at life as a lesson, something to learn from and a gift, the happier you will be. The more you are living in your purpose and passion, the easier it is to see things from this perspective. Do you want to have this synergy in your heart, body, mind, and soul? Do you want to be content, overflowing with joy and being of value to the world?

Jack Finds Passion

Jack became tired of stumbling through life. He did some investigation and found out a few things: he enjoys the outdoors, being invigorated by the fresh air, strategic thinking, and intellection. Earlier, when he was playing golf he was engaging a few of these passions, an appreciation of nature, strategic thinking, and intellection. He had stopped playing golf because of a lack of time. The irony is that after picking the hobby back up, he seems to have more time and energy.

At work, he also noticed that his job had become dull because he was not reading the statistical reports like he did when he had first started his job. Back then, when he read the reports, it motivated him and got him excited about driving strategies that would save the company time and money. So, he started reading the reports again and found himself more engaged at work. The momentum helped him do things faster, be more positive and actually finish up on time many days so that he could get home to his kids.

Since Jack was getting home on time, there was a little break before dinner when he could go outside and play with the kids: he loved throwing the ball and teaching little Jake how to ride his bike! It even inspired him to equip the family to embrace Saturday morning rides on the local park trail.

As Jack realized that his passions were being outside in nature, using his intellectual abilities and creating solutions and strategies, he found that these same things showed up in every area of life. It was exciting and compelling! He was happy, fulfilled and had found a synergy in every area of his life.

You now know what passion is. You now know the benefit of inviting passion into your life. Take the time to explore your personal passions and to integrate them in your life. Passion is a phenomenal gift. If you want to LIVE life to the fullest and enjoy it along the way, take the time to discover your passions. Put them into your daily life. You will find you have time for everything you did before and more.
