Compassion and Kindness

In our daily life we often experience emotions and sensitivity in our surroundings and beyond the physical boundaries. These feelings are either related to human beings or otherwise yet make us reflect and initiate actions to circumvent hurdles or explore the benefits that affects us in many ways. It is necessary to comprehend the structural meaning and context of compassion and kindness within and outside its conceptual boundaries.

The etymology of "compassion" is Latin, meaning "co-suffering." Compassion involves "feeling for another" and is a precursor to empathize, the "feeling as another" capacity for better person-centered acts of active compassion; in common parlance active compassion is the desire to alleviate another's suffering (ref: Wikipedia). One can notice that compassion is also closely related to physicians, a human factor. In other words, it is their attributes while practicing medical service.

The holy script in Quran emphasizes compassion and commences with these words, "Bismillah Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem," which means, 'In the name of Allah Who is Beneficent and Merciful.' If people recite rhetorically, then its impact becomes less effective, however, reciting with reflection will reveal its profoundness.

If you reflect on the past, say about more than a century ago, we can recollect the compassion as publicly displayed by people with all their sincerity. This has unequivocally and evidently established that most of the people have humanitarian values and less materialistic attachments. Therefore, the values have its profound effect when words described its meaning in the context in which it is used. On the contrary, peripheral meaning and a cursory glance over the words or sentences have either no effect or its impact is least effective. Hence, the cultural, social or political impact of words is directly proportional to its values it subscribed.

If we do critical analysis or objective assessment, then our aim should be to explore the values for which these expressions are used. The result will show the growth of people and their impact on the society.

William Wordsworth says: "That best portion of a good man's life is,

His little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love."

It is described that compassion and kindness played an analytical role when these words become debatable. Both are related to human values, yet critical analysis indicates that there is a difference between compassion and kindness. The former is a feeling of someone's suffering and the latter is to extend help others in need of help. Compassion is more productive in not only rendering timely help but also evolves, ways and means to avoid such recurrences. Whereas, kindness is a short-term help to fix the problem at that moment only.

When books were being written on the hero and hero-worship, it emphasized that a nation's character develops in the character of their hero. When heroes shape up the people's character, then a healthy society is evolved displaying their compassion and kindness. It does not matter most follow or minority carry the baton and become the beacon of light to the coming generation.

Here, it is important to caution and advice to younger generations or people who are involved head over heel in compassion or kindness. It may lead to compassion fatigue or stress. Charles Figley, a university professor, says this happens when an individual is heavily involved in excessive information of people's suffering. However, according to Tania Singer and Matthieu Ricard (a Director of social neuroscience and a writer and the Buddhist Monk respectively), lack of suitable stress tolerance which gets people fatigued in compassion activities. It is suggested that whatever may be the cause or reason, an individual or a group should adopt a median path so that optimum results are achieved. It will help them to maintain a healthy body and mind making the youngster to enjoy and get satisfaction.

Message From the Universe: Helping Others FIRST

woman standing on body of water about to hold person's hand

"The person who remembers they can always reach out and help others, never runs out of things to do, always has friends, and rarely needs advice.

"Give it away, give it away, give it away, give it away now,"
The Universe"

Learning to be there for others in their moments of need is an absolute quality. No one will ever remember someone based on how many cars they had, or how big their homes was. Most people remember the quality of character in a person once they depart. Be that person that everyone remembers. This is something that everyone should thrive for. Life is too short as it is, so building yourself a good reputation is definitely something you should work towards to.

We all have our own problems that we need to deal with on a daily basis. What makes you a better person is finding that to help others while you are still helping yourself. Helping others when time is convenient is not something to really be proud of, as it may be misconstrued as being bored. Everyone you will come across are facing their own challenges and will never reach out to you when they need help as it shows a sign of weakness. As they already feel bad for the situation they put themselves in, it takes a lot for them to ask for help. Notice the signs, the facial and body language and come up with your own conclusion. Being there for someone in need has its benefits. You will also feel great for your contribution to making someone's life better, even for a little bit.

A Little Change Makes a Big Investment

As I wander through life there are many interesting conversations to overhear and participate in. One that's caught my attention lately is how hard change is. You can resist change and stay stuck in your situation, or you can grow through change and create a different reality.

There's no denying that change is hard, at first. The benefit of sticking with the effort to make a change is that you emerge a better person. The effort you put in is rewarded by the results you get. The path along the way can be a bit messy, even disappointing some days, but you still owe it to yourself to persevere. And you learn and grow from even the messy stuff in the middle.

Another objection to some making change is that it feel like deprivation. You gotta change that mindset. If doing things that are hard creates a feeling of deprivation, not a feeling of challenge and growth, you owe it to yourself to switch your thinking. Growth isn't a sacrifice. When you lose bad habits you are growing. You lose a bad habit by replacing it with a good habit. When you change from a bad habit to a good habit, you haven't lost a thing, you haven't sacrificed anything - you have grown and improved. There's no deprivation in growth.

In my observations and experience, deciding to change some aspect of your life - diet, physique, addiction, meditation practice... any habit you perform - is energizing. That decision is taking the first step. Taking action is the next step, and subsequent steps, until you reach your goal. That's how change is accomplished, one decision and step at a time.

Each step along the way is a chance to learn. You learn about yourself and the world. Exciting! Empowering. That's part of an Energize Me attitude. That's part of the growth that keeps life interesting and valuable.

Are you tired of at least some aspects of your life? What are you doing about it? Action versus non-action is the difference between someone living up to their potential and someone stuck in the past.

Maybe you don't strive to grow and change because it feels like too much work. That's one of the comments I hear. Consider this: you are working toward the wrong goal, you aren't passionate about the change you are avoiding. That is stressful. Altering your attitude or goal will turn hard work into passion.

Another possibility is that you haven't found the right attitude about the change you want, or are told you must make. Can you wrap your head around the idea of accepting that the change is important and taking the first step, even if it's a little one? Can you tiptoe into the change? Some people prefer jumping in with both feet - or diving in head first. Regardless, you have to move toward your goal or your desired change won't happen. What's your style?

A friend of mine has learned to live his life like a video game or movie script. By turning a challenge into a game goal - complete with points, levels, and rewards - he has been living the life of his dreams for over six years now. Now that's energizing! That's the path to success for him, and lots of his tribe.

The reality, is by taking on change you are investing in yourself. You invest in yourself in other ways, like education, saving for a goal, health, or the friends you keep; why not invest in yourself when it comes to your habits and attitudes?

You'll find your life more satisfying and gratifying as you accept that change can be hard, but that you can make it easier. You'll be energized by the action you take with that first step. You'll live a better life.

We All Have Dragons To Slay

We all have our demons or dragons to destroy.

Just like Don Quixote who set about destroying the windmills of Holland, we all have our own demons or windmills to destroy.

Each and everyone one of us comes into this world with a mission, and part of that mission is to overcome fear or dispel whatever karma we may be working on at the time.

Every challenge in life presents us with an opportunity to learn. We often erroneously think the challenges we face are someone else's doing.

They aren't.We each create our own destiny and learning experiences.

Although there may be a perpetrator, and someone we believe is doing us wrong, that act is something we created ourselves to enable us to solve an issue and create an environment for us to move past some karma created by us in this lifetime or in the past.

After we get past the initial anger, the only thing left to do is to understand what we can do about it and learn from it.

Those instances of perceived injustice can actually make us a better person, and I have found if I don't learn from them, the actions get repeated until I do.

There isn't anyway around them.

In today's world with all the advancements in technology, life should be easier than it ever has been in the history of man, but people keep inventing new ways to make their life more difficult.

This just proves to me that humanity continuously needs new challenges to grow intellectually, deep down inside, no one wants an easy way in life.

We need challenges to stimulate our minds and souls, the unhappiest people are often times the ones who life has handed them a silver spoon.

As a result, slaying our dragons should be one of our main objectives in life.

Many times we worry about someone else's dragons and forget about our own.

There is only one person who can meet their own demons, no one else can do it for them.

We can help, but they have to do it themselves, we should always remember this.

That is why it is often said,"No good deed goes unpunished." When we do too much and interfere with their karma, the universe will let us know in no uncertain terms.

People only want so much help, and to know that someone is thinking of them, then they can do what needs to be done, in their own way.

We have enough to think about taking care of our own issues, and only by solving our own problems can we help anyone else.

I have traversed the globe in search of truth, my truth, during which time I have had an opportunity to study with Aborigine elders, native American Indians, and some of the world's finest intuitive. All of this has lead me to better understand our world and all things therein contained.

Turn Yourself Into The Person Of Your Dreams

It's really amazing how we don't think about the hard work actors do while watching a movie. We enjoy those 2 hours so much, that we forget who the actors really are. You know, while watching Bruce Almighty we say, "Did you see Bruce pull the moon closer to the Earth?" We rarely say, "Look at what Jim Carrey just did." During those 2 hours, the actors become who they need to be in order to deliver the message and produce the results they desire. The more work they put into transforming themselves into the character they're playing, the better results and critique they get.
An actor's goal is to become a master at portraying different characters; and just like actors, there are times we dream of being different- not a different person, but a BETTER person; the kind of person we imagine ourselves to be everyday we go to bed at night. Some of us want to lose weight, some of us want more money and some of us just want to build amazing relationships; but it's hard to reach those goals and results if the person taking those actions isn't coming from a confident, definite, and persistent place. Have you noticed that whenever you begin your journey towards any goal, if your heart or confidence isn't fully invested in that goal, you end up getting bored, quitting or failing?
Why does this happen? It happens because our body is a cybernetic mechanism - it brings us 'back on course' when we break our comfort zone, just like a plane automatically comes back on course after hitting turbulence. This is the reason so many people quit: they do something for a while, they start seeing results, they get comfortable and then they get stuck. Losing weight, increasing our income and being an amazing husband/wife can only manifest if we make our desired result our comfort zone! In other words, make yourself feel uncomfortable until you get there. You've got to change your approach towards achieving that goal; and to change that we've got to change our self image.
If we picture ourselves as a fat person, we will diet for a while, get comfortable and without knowing, our cybernetic mechanism will bring us right back to where we were. We cry, we get angry and eventually we give up! We need to treat the source. If our self-image doesn't change, we will never find the confidence, desire and persistence to succeed and manifest those results.
There is one amazing exercise you can do in order to help you manifest those results in a faster and better way: You need to write a script of you. Not your situation, not a story of your past... just YOU. Who would you like to be? Begin jotting down ideas of the person you would like to be, and read it over and over. Allow yourself to totally relax and feel like you are already that person; you will see results manifest in no time.
Now why did I bring up actors? Well, actors imagine themselves to be someone else all the time; in fact they're pros at it! So if actors are studying the character they are trying to play in a movie, we should study the person we are aspiring to be in our own movie! Study your dream, really think about every aspect of who you want to be, and then begin creating a plan and taking action to manifest each of those qualities. Break down those comfort zones and allow your cybernetic mechanism to acquire and new optimal state of being. Make success your norm instead of failure, and you'll be on your way to creating bigger and better fantasies.
