Why You Cannot Stay Focused - Causes and Solutions

Would you like to stay focused and enjoy an unmatched level of concentration like Albert Einstein? This may seem too elusive courtesy of distractions that form an inevitable part of life and also tend to draw your attention away from the core areas, but it is definitely not impossible.

Irrespective of whether you are a student, a professional or a stay-at-home individual, poor concentration is something that does tend to set in over a period of time and very soon you find yourself struggling to stay focused. Invariably you start the day worrying incessantly about your inability to focus and this in turn leads to undue mental stress. If ignored and allowed to grow unabated, it could also impair your memory and aggravate into amnesia.

What Causes You To Lose Focus?

Loss of concentration and focus is due to several causes which are -

Inability to control self-talk - All of us are born with that little voice in our heads that keeps on talking throughout the day. While some of it may pertain to the present, much of it is distraction and tends to draw you away from your current situation. And before you even realize, your mind is wandering all over the world.

Procrastination - To procrastinate is human. While you may have won a momentary victory by getting away from a particular task, the stress of completing it at a later date is enough to destroy your focus on the task at hand.

Scattered brain - When you have too many things on your mind, chances are that you are unlikely to stay focused on any of them. Maybe you are an expert at multi-tasking but there are times when everything piles up and demands attention. Such situations usually trigger stress and may also lead to memory loss.

Is There A Solution To Stay Focused?

Indeed there is a solution to this problem and it entails a combination of both internal and external remedies.

Internally you would be required to make an effort to stay more in the 'now', to prepare a list of to-do jobs and follow it and prioritize tasks so as to minimize procrastination. Externally, you could rely on supplements to enhance cognitive functions and memory. These would enable you to recover from undue stress and experience a significant improvement in overall personal health.

Using Natural Supplements to Stay Focused

Natural supplements could be taken in form of tablets or tonic and are enriched with antioxidants and tonics like Jala Brahmi and Arjuna which boost blood circulation to the neural region. Herbs like ashwagandha shield your nervous system from the degenerative effects of stress and in the process enhance cognitive functionality, thus improving both concentration and focus.

Natural herbs in supplements, particularly ashwagandha, energize and fortify the body's immune system. You are thus better poised to overcome weakness and recover from mental stress.

Another big positive is the absence of side effects while using these natural supplements, their positive impact on your health notwithstanding. Of course these supplements need to be taken as per the prescription so as to derive maximum benefit.

Final Word

Once your concentration improves and you are able to stay focused, there are bound to be a number of positive developments in your life, like faster completion of tasks, enhanced productivity and better quality of work. Success does not seem as elusive as before and you tend to enjoy every aspect of your life more than ever.

6 Effective Ways to Be Relieved From Stress

Stress is an awful experience that not so many people want to experience, especially if you are at work, at home taking care of your baby or in your bedroom making some projects while preparing for an upcoming major exam. While stress is inevitable, the good news is it is completely manageable.

There are different ways you can do to combat stress. Even if you consider yourself as the busiest person in your workplace, school, or home, it is still possible to come out feeling relaxed and focused despite of the grind around you.

Learn how others are doing it and take note of these tips:

Meditation

Meditation can help you be relieved from stress by targeting your mind. Whether you believe it or not, your mind and everything that's inside of it (whatever it is), can bring about stress to your life. When unresolved for a long time, it can affect all other areas such as your body, your emotions, and even your social life.

Most commonly people experience mental stress and one of the ways to combat this is through meditation. Meditation works by easing the anxiety on your mind. It can be done for just a few minutes daily and you can do it anytime during the day.

Relaxation techniques

If you are prone to getting stressed easily, what better way to combat this than by doing various relaxation techniques?

Some of the relaxation techniques you can learn and apply are yoga, deep breathing exercise, and meditation rhythmic exercise.

By doing these techniques, you allow the body to elicit its own natural relaxation response. This will lead to a more peaceful and calm feeling. You would be able to finish the day with a go getter attitude, and you will surely love that!

Have someone to talk to

Stress can get into your nerves easily and when that happens, it will start to affect your performances daily. Don't let it get the best of you. Begin by disclosing how you feel to someone you can trust. That person could be your best friend, a relative, or a professional counselor.

It actually helps a lot if you make it a habit to share your thoughts and feelings to someone rather than keeping all inside until they accumulate and bring about negative effects to your health and daily activities.

Have a body massage

Body massage is one of the proven ways to get relief from stress. Recommended by doctors and other health professionals, body massage ease the anxiety in your mind and relaxes the muscles in your body.

It gives you a calm and relaxing feeling as the masseur's hands glide swiftly through your back, head, extremities, and thighs. Professional masseurs use various massaging techniques for various conditions.

At the end of the day, when you are feeling so stressed out from work, school, home, or some activities that you did during the day, consider getting yourself a good body massage and you'll surely come out feeling rejuvenated.

Go for an adventure

From time to time, it pays a lot if you take a break from what you are doing. Especially if it has been causing you a lot of stress lately, one of the things you can do to be relieved from it is by going for an adventure.

The most common form is by taking a trip either alone or with friends and loved ones. Renew your mind by breaking the daily grind and discover new things at a different pace. As you enjoy the adventure, you get to have more peace of mind and have more time to think about other things.

Aside from that, going for an adventure is one way to treat oneself after days of toiling hard for work. It is actually getting more personal space that one would have not possibly experience if done otherwise.

Manage your time well

While going for an adventure will give you lots of benefits, not everyone will have the luxury of time to always do it.

If that was the case, you can still be relieved from stress by managing your time well every single day. This means you allocate your time wisely and effectively. Have time to do your tasks while setting aside ample time for rest and relaxation.

Avoid the MaƱana Habit so that you can always accomplish tasks on time. Don't spread yourself too thin.

Many health professionals would agree that stress can be the root cause of all major health problems. Don't let that ever happen to you. Manage stress well while you still can.

Stopping Mental Stress

How does negative thinking affect a person's stress level?

You may have already learned about the modern stress model or the sequence of events that lead to the physiological stress response.

For those of you who are not familiar with it, here's the summary:

You experience or think of something that is stressful which leads to negative thoughts and emotions.

This triggers psychological stress. You may begin experiencing signs of mental stress.

Psychological stress, if left unregulated, triggers the physiological stress response. You may experience physical symptoms of stress such as clammy hands and an elevated heart rate, even if you are at rest.

Why is it best for you to practice control over your own thoughts?

If we would look carefully at the modern stress model, we would come to the conclusion that the actual, physiological stress response only comes to the surface during moments of mental stress.

Mental stress on the other hand, doesn't just appear out of nowhere. A person only experiences mental stress if her thought patterns and emotions are working toward this particular outcome.

With these facts in mind, it becomes very clear that in order to stop physiological stress in its tracks, you need to address the causative agent, which is mental stress.

Why do we think the way we do?

I often encounter individuals who beat themselves up over the fact that they have a tendency to think and feel in certain ways especially when they have to contend with common stressors.

Your habitual responses to stressors are actually determined by 3 different yet interlocking factors:

1. DNA - Your parents' genes are partly responsible for your tendencies and general temperament.

In addition to the way you were raised, there's also the fact that you inherited your parents' chromosomes, which also means that you've inherited at least part of their personalities

So if one or both of your parents are aggressive or hotheaded, you may have the same inclinations because of your DNA.

2. Childhood - Sigmund Freud, the old father of psychoanalysis, often analyzed people's childhoods to get to the bottom of strange neuroses.

It turns out that Freud was spot on when he determined that early childhood experiences have a lot to do with how we fully develop and mature as adults.

Our individual responses to stressful situations are partly determined by how we were conditioned to respond when we were still young.

So keep this in mind when you are raising your own children; your children are not only absorbing the world at large, they are also absorbing your behavior and thought patterns!

3. Life Itself - Our DNA and early childhood experiences comprise only a small portion of the totality called the self. Your experiences as you grow older are also strong determinants of your behavior toward stressful situations.

We can't do anything about past experiences, may they be good or bad, but we can do something about our beliefs and values in the present time. We must not allow past negative experiences to dictate how we live in the present time.

Now that you are more familiar with how the mind works and why it operates in a particular manner with regards to stressful situation, it's time that you learned how to control unstable and stressful thought patterns.

How can you control seemingly unstable thought patterns?

Thought patterns are powerful, but they are never more powerful than the person itself. A thought, no matter how destructive, does not have free will or a life of its own. All negative thoughts are vulnerable and extinguishable, remember that!

Easy Mind Control Exercise

  1. Find a quiet place to perform the Easy Mind Control Exercise. Get a piece of paper and write down five of the most negative thoughts you've been having for the past few months.
  2. Below the first five items, write down five beautiful thoughts, memories or ideas that are directly in contrast with the first five items you wrote down.
  3. Focus your mind's power on each of the undesirable thoughts and as you do, give your mind a firm command to remove the thoughts.
  4. Visualize a blank space where each of the undesirable thoughts used to be. Begin placing pleasant thoughts on this blank space, to replace the negative ones that have just been driven out.
  5. Repeat the exercise until you are satisfied and practice again the next day.
