Body Acceptance: How to Strike Up a Loving Relationship With Your Most Loyal Companion (By Suzanne St John Smith)

As a psychotherapist, I'm in the business of hearing how people, especially women, talk about their bodies using hateful and disparaging terms. They aren't alone. I've done the same myself, and so I know how hard it can be to make peace with our imperfect bodies (are they ever anything else?) let alone feel loving toward it.

Some people spend a lifetime hating the way they're "represented" by their bodies. They've analyzed and criticized every inch of themselves while comparing their bodies to other members of their family, to their friends, and to almost anyone they come across in life, on social media sites, in movies and on television. And as a result, these same people have more often than not felt "less than" as a result.

Many such individuals will use almost any means to change what they believe is wrong with themselves, including crazy diets, starvation, purging, laxatives, over-exercising, and surgical and non-surgical interventions.

The rise of cosmetic surgery prior to age 30 has risen exponentially over the past ten years, and the rise in the use of surgical interventions in women over the age of 40 has also increased hugely during this same period of time. These interventions include minor procedures (chemical peels, botox, fillers) and major ones (full face lifts, liposuctions, and other such interventions that can increase the risk of death).

Unfortunately, some of these individuals do die in their pursuit of gaining acceptance of their bodies for themselves, and from others. So what needs to happen to lower the number of individuals who seem so committed to altering their bodies? This is, of course, an age-old question, but the answer isn't quite as simple as self-acceptance.

Or is it?

For many people who undergo surgical interventions, it changes their lives. It changes the way they feel about themselves, regardless of how it may or may not change how others view them, and maybe this is where we should draw the line. Right?

In other words, if the person is simply improving the way they view themselves and they aren't influenced by anyone outside of them, then isn't that a sign of health? The answer is "yes" in some cases.

For example, take the person who decided to undergo a surgical intervention because of the emotional pain they experienced for much of their life due to a part of their body they later chose to alter, and who never lived to regret it because they found a deep peace within themselves as a result. In this case, and many like it, I say "YES," that was clearly a good choice for the individual, because the change was for them and not to become "more acceptable" to others.

However, consider the person suffering from any form of eating disorder. They aren't usually driven by what others think of their bodies. Rather, they're typically tortured by how they view themselves, And, despite how others might beg them to eat because they're dangerously thin, they would argue that they need to lose just a few more pounds to be acceptable to THEMSELVES.

So this, too, is a personal choice based on how the person views their body, as opposed to being "driven" by outside forces. Right? Nope.

We are all members of this society, and we've been taught from early childhood from numerous sources what is, and what is not, considered "beautiful."

Decisions to alter our bodies in any form are to some degree always going to be "infected" by societal values, the healthy ones and the not-so-healthy ones. So what we need to do is to be hugely clear about the reasons we're doing what we're doing to our bodies.

For example, what do we expect from the change? Are we going about the change in a physically and emotionally healthy way? Do we feel any shame about what we're doing to change our bodies?

If so, that might be a flag that you should investigate. Another flag that reflects shame is secretiveness. Do we hope that nobody will discover what we're doing to change our bodies?

Consequently, prior to making changes to our bodies, we need to really think about why we want to make them in the first place, and self-honesty is key. Denial, or in other words, lying to ourselves (and others) or drawing on any number of reasons to justify our actions will merely block our ability to connect to the truth that lies within us.

But what about the concept of NOT changing our bodies and instead change the way we view them?

I believe many of us simply need to change our relationship to our bodies, and to begin seeing them as the loyal companions they've been to us for our entire lives. I know that sounds weird, because it's not like we had a choice, right? It's kind of like an "arranged marriage."

I was stuck with this body from the beginning, and I wasn't able to trade it in for another model (literally and figuratively) once I became of the age where comparison with others became an everyday experience and, thus, discovered its many flaws.

I, too, dieted, over-dieted, starved, over-exercised, binged and purged, spent hours, days, years hating and despising the body I'd been given without my permission.

And now I look back at photos that were taken just a year prior to the "battle of my body," and I think how lovely I looked.

OMG. How did my vision change?

Why didn't I think that before all those years of pain and torture? Yes, torture. Try starving in this society. It might be what our society requires in order to be as thin as it promotes, but it's bloody hard to do with all the food we come face to face with each and every single day.

Unless you've done it, you have no idea what it's like to turn away from food that you so desperately want to eat because the pain of starvation is literally killing you. But you don't take it, or if you do, you punish yourself by purging it the first chance you get because you live in fear of something far worse than dying: you might get fat.

And what if you do? Well, for sure you'll hate yourself, but you're equally convinced that others will, too. So this is what some of us do when we don't build a loving relationship with our bodies.

Today, I look at those old photos and I ask my body for forgiveness for what I did to it for so many years.

It sounds silly, doesn't it? But to me, it's not. It's about becoming grateful to the one entity that never let me down no matter how hard I hurt, rejected, despised, and almost killed it. It remains with me today, obviously, and still in one piece.

I'm a lot older now, so you might think I'd hate it even more. After all, I'm still a member of this rigid and critical society. Yet, I look at the face that is no longer as fresh and young as those of my beautiful nieces, and as much as I might still yearn for that youthful glow from time to time, I know that when I look back, if I'm fortunate enough, 20 years from now, I'll once again see the beauty in my face that exists today, a kind of life force that exudes from both the inside and outside of me.

But, the best news of all is that I no longer need to wait that long to see it. I can see it now. I'm so grateful that this amazing body is still willing to work with me, take me where I need and want to go, and it does so without complaint.

I feel so fortunate about this fact, and I never take it for granted the way I once did. In the end, I don't believe it forgave me for the abuse I dealt it because it didn't need to.

That's the kind of unconditional love this body offered me. It loved me all along despite how I kept turning my back on it.

So, I urge you to take another look. Look deep into the commitment your body has offered you throughout your entire life. It deserves your love and acceptance, and, in offering it, that action will heal you in ways you can't imagine.

Message From the Universe: Avoiding Challenges

woman sitting on floor and leaning on couch using laptop

"I know this may come as somewhat of a shock but of your innumerable and extraordinary gifts, one day you'll consider your present day challenges as the greatest of them all.

Trust me.

Now, wasn't I good to you?
The Universe"

Every day present its own challenges. Every day is different in some shape and forms. Schedules are different, your responsibilities, your actions, your behavior towards different events happening during that day. We might feel we are doing the same things over and over again, but from an outside perspective, it is different. But different is good, changes are important to always keep things exciting about life. Today's challenges might be extremely tough for you but when tomorrow comes, you will realize yesterday's challenges weren't such a big deal after all. The reason is because you are learning to handle them the proper way and becoming more mature about it.

So by changing your inner world towards being more acceptance of these difficult challenges, you are actually building an immunity to how it affects you. You are changing the perception by making decisions based on facts and without any panic. You are changing your behavior so you can look at things optimistically. When crap has to hit the fan, it will hit it no matter what. The question is: Will you stay in the trajectory of the crap coming towards you and panic about it or will you "Matrix Move" it ( When Neo bends backwards to avoid gun bullets from Agent Mr. Smith). The choice is yours.

Ways to Improve Quality of Life - Improve Your Life With Long-Term Changes

Man Wearing Black Zip-up Jacket Near Beach Smiling at the Photo

There are qualities that we need to address to improve quality life. We all have these to some degree and must be cognizant of them so they do not take control of our life.

Fears change?

I have listed 4 qualities that we need to change. Once we will learn how to overcome these, surely we will obtain what we desire in life.

Enjoys Seeing Others Fail - There are individuals out there who enjoy seeing others fail. Some of them hide it well but instead of congratulating a person when they attain some form of success this individual deep down inside wishes that successful person falls flat on their face.

These feelings could stem from the individual having a narcissistic personality or some deep-rooted psychological problem. A successful person likes to see others achieve greatness as well, the more people who succeed the greater the wealth for everyone. This "evil eye" mentality may come back to haunt the person who enjoys seeing others fail.

In business and life if you help people they will help you at some point in time but if you kick a person when they are down you may find yourself in a similar predicament in the future so try to help individuals whenever possible. If you feel this way then seek out professional help, having this condition is not a character flaw but failing to get it treated is a sign of selfishness.

Irritable And Angry Most Of The Time - Everyone has a bad day here and there but if a person is constantly irritable that other people avoid them then that is a sign this particular individual is either in the wrong position or is dealing with internal challenges.

The reason a person gets angry is they feel like they are overwhelmed and out of control otherwise they wouldn't be angry. Unless the individual in question is suffering from withdrawal due to a drug addiction i.e. smoking cigarettes there is no reason for them to be irritable all the time.

This negativity can be toxic for your company, nobody wants to go near an individual who is constantly negative so if this sounds like you it may be time to look at your workload and maybe adopt some stress management exercises to keep the angst in check. We all get angry from time to time but it is how we deal with it that makes all the difference in the world.

Will Find Excuses And Blame Others For Failure - No one wants to fail, but we only fail if we stop trying. Whenever something happens that seems to be negative an individual with the wrong mindset will look for excuses why a particular project did not go according to plan.

Some of the excuses are "not enough time" "not enough money" "someone else dropped the ball" all of these excuses are nothing more than lies, the project did not go according to plan which does happen to the best of companies.

A successful person would say "you know what, this is what we did right and can implement and this is what didn't go according to plan and we can avoid in the future". By making you accountable to yourself and those around you will exude confidence and people respect that, no one likes a whiner and if a person constantly makes excuses they are essentially that a "whiner".

Does Not Set Goals - If you do not set goals in life how will you measure results? Not trying to be rude but if you do the same things day in and day out without willing to make goals and measure them then what is the point of living?

Please don't take this the wrong way but if you had a job and you went to work every day but did absolutely nothing your boss would fire you. You are the boss of your own life so if you are not doing anything to make your life better what kind of message are you making about yourself as a person?

I know you are scared, we have all been there but you only have one life to live so why not try something different, positive and see where it takes you, who knows where you will be but one thing we know is what you are doing now does not produce results so take the first step and try something new.

Erase these negative mindsets and embrace new things to improve your life with long-term changes. You do it for the better.

People DON'T Resist Change - That They Do Is A MYTH

That people resist change is a myth. Don't believe me - if people resisted change would they ever - get married, retire, take a new job, move to a new state, go someplace new on vacation, have kids, buy a new house - got it - people don't resist change it's a myth that we have been taught for years by society, parents, schools etc.

What people resist is - losing control - so if they feel like a change will cause them to lose control they will resist the change but if they feel or believe that the change will not cause them to lose control - they won't resist the change - it's that simple. And what do people want to maintain control of - their health, happiness, security and safety. So, let me explain with a couple of quick examples. If you are a manager, leader and experience resistance from employees, vendors or customers due to the changes it's simple - you have not done an effective job of showing them or convincing them that the changes they will experience will not cause them to lose control of an important area of their life, career or business.

Let's say your organization is going through a merger or acquisition and people are wondering even afraid - will I lose my job? Will my income get cut? Will my hours or responsibilities change? If the answers to any of these questions is yes - you can expect resistance, because your actions are causing them to lose control of something that is important to them.

How about - you have accepted a new job in a different state and must relocate and your kids are having hissy fits because you are moving. Guess what - they feel like their lives will never be the same because of this move so they will fight these changes tooth and nail. I know, growing up I was in 18 schools in five states in 12 years. Trust me - I understand the concept of change and losing control.

One more - You are surprising your spouse with a special four-day weekend getaway package to a new part of the country or even country he or she has never been before - their reaction - mixed - one of excitement and concern - what will it be like, what will the people be like, is it safe etc.

So, what's the answer - if you want to reduce or even eliminate common causes to change show people how the changes will not cause them to lose control of important areas or aspects of their lives. Want more resistance - keep shoving change down their throats with little concern for how it impacts them.

How Your Inner Critic Is Sabotaging You

You may believe in the power of affirmations but do they often get crushed by your inner-critic? These affirmations seem like a great idea and several experts will say they work. But, if they do work, why aren't more people using them?

It could be that your inner-critic is stronger than any affirmations you may present for yourself. After all, we spent a lifetime developing that critic. A few short-term affirmations aren't going to hold much weight against it.

So, does this mean you are destined to never using affirmations? Not at all.

In fact, it is the purpose of affirmations to re-target your brain into believing that the affirmations are the correct way to think. For this, consistency is key. Set up a system that allows you to reinforce your affirmations.

It's going to take some work, but it can be done. It is about switching up your routine to use affirmations you find or create. If you are stuck finding the right affirmations, ask others who have found ones that work.

Repetition and belief are two important concepts when applying your affirmations. Set up a schedule that contains the particular affirmation you want to use. Say your affirmations out loud and do it several times on each day. The more you do them, the more they will transform your thoughts to the point where they become natural.

If you skip a day that has been scheduled, don't worry too much about it. Just pick up where you left off the next day and write in your journal about skipping. If you can pinpoint the reason why this can help keep you from doing it again, it would even be better.

When you set up your schedule and journal and stick to them, you will look back and wonder how your inner-critic was even able to dominate. Your affirmations will take over and be in control of your brain.

Thus, you will be setting up the Law of Attraction as it relates to affirmations in a way that gives you the results you seek. Once this happens, you have the tools to make it happen over and over again. This means you will finally get to have the things you have wanted and live the life you have always dreamed about.

It is a new journey but one that will have a lasting impact. You have it within you to make the necessary changes. The question is, are you ready to silence your inner-critic? I wish you all the best in your success affirmation endeavors.

The Power of Wild Cards

dandelion-seeds-pointed-flower-1452219.jpg

Wild cards deliver completely unexpected changes, many times signaling the derailment of perfectly laid plans. The news they deliver springs from nowhere we were looking. These surprises simply lurk about seeking the perfect opportunity to crash into our lives. When things utterly unknown and unexpected appear on the horizon a change is already in motion. These unexpected events are powerful no matter how the news may appear initially. They frequently signal the onset of 'significant events that create significant change.'

These surprises contain influences that are unpredictable joined with qualities that are uncertain. Our natural instinct is to withdraw from things that create this much improbability, perhaps the reason so many endings are the result of wild cards. What we may be missing is the assurance that the same threads that bind uncertainty unravel as opportunity. Many times ideas that surface in our effort to correct unexpected changes lead us to places were never attempting to go or new heights we never imagined scaling. Wild cards may be the impetus to alter our course and reach higher and look beyond the limitations we have created as boundaries to what we are trying to accomplish.

Successful entrepreneurs, Inventors and the most creative among us are the best evidence of using wild cards to pivot to a more successful plateau. Thomas Edison may be the most famous of these examples as he cast aside his failed efforts to create a hearing aid, freely giving the project to Alexander Graham Bell where it became the telephone. Wild cards may very well be a nudge from the universe to look farther than you can see now, to dream bigger. What appeared to be an ending may be heralding a new and better beginning.

Life is about perception, our ability to correctly interpret what we believe about what we see. Unpredictable events that are the trademark of wild cards force us to look beyond the original plan for in the hope that we can bring things back to where we thought they should be. When we can't do that, the opportunity to apply a change, to take a detour that may lead to a different conclusion is on the horizon. When life presents you with a wild card, especially about something that is important to you, before you accept it as a 'no' look deeper to see if it really means 'not that way.' Something much better may be waiting to enter the scene. Wild cards may be a gift from above!

Success And State Of Being

Reaching success is in most cases the result of deliberate, persistent, and constant action on a set of causal variables that allow a positive outcome. In the spiritual world, as in business, people always ask if there is a strategy or plan to follow, as if having a plan was the predictive factor of the ability to achieve the desired result. Having a plan gives clarity and direction and the ability to predict success at a rational level. Of course, we have to follow it if we want it to give us the knack to transform ourselves into masters of success production, and this, of course, depends only on us. Only we can make magic happen.

The first element of predicting success is our commitment to making the necessary changes, additions and cancellations of what needs to be transformed within and around us. This allows us to live and ride the standard set of success indicators to achieve our predictable desired goal. Using the behavior template below will help predict our desired future success safely. Our own opponent is only us. We should always strive to set the rudder bar of our life on a superior course and progress steadily from what we currently are.

I feel competition as a motivation and see the success of others as an inspiration of what is possible to achieve and overcome.

I get out of my comfort zone regularly and push to try, and practice, new and bold things.

I manage my feelings, let them out, observe them, and proceed with my decisions, behavior, and ability to move toward my goal.

I accept and love the challenge when it is launched, or I hear that something can not be done; this invigorates and excites me.

I am always in action, even when I do nothing, and catch my brain signals inciting me to get something new.

I control my mind and focus coherently on the positive and how to capitalize it to build new strategies and achieve my results.

I depend on my trust in myself rather than my friends or other human beings and realize that the most consistent and reliable source of strength and support resides in my depths, and that, when I appreciate myself, I can draw energy at any time.

I remember that I live in an infinite reality and have endless abilities and opportunities to apply and consolidate the success indicators that guide my path to what is already planned and due to me.

I'm on my way; I open to others, approach them, engage with them, and get involved.

I push myself in all the ways; I talk, attend, join, invite, and encourage.

I kindly let others enter; comfortably, routinely, and inexorably.

The key to success is to be part of the whole.

History or Destiny

Life has a habit of delivering an earthquake just when it feels like things are balanced and on track. Something changes; something is painful and seems unbearable. The choice before you is a season of mourning or a lifetime of mourning. Do you remain in the pain or walk through the rain? The real choice is whether your life will be about history or destiny; that which has passed or that which is before you.

While the choice seems obvious it is far easier to get stuck living a life of history rather than believing in a future that is completely different from yesterday. Significant events can shake our world and our faith. Suddenly what we thought we could count on disappears like a rug pulled swiftly out from under our feet. This sudden shift can leave us afraid to believe we can ever stand on anything we can believe in again. It takes a leap of faith to walk forward in the rain believing it will reside, that the sun will shine as brightly again. Significant events create significant change.

The real choice is whether you can let go of the pain and accept change or embrace the pain and remain in a comfort zone that has been irreparably altered. You can't put back something that is gone. Efforts to replicate what has been lost frequently lead to unhealthy relationships filled with more pain. The only other option is to embrace the change, a frightening notion for most people.

Some people choose the 'survivor syndrome.' This compels you to remain in the pain filled void, almost in martyrdom, while proclaiming that while you can't change what has happened, you can survive it. When Moses attempted to lead his people to the Promised Land they spent 40 years walking around the same mountain just next door to the paradise they were seeking. They refused to make or accept a change opting instead for taking just another lap for you and me. Complaining loudly all the way, they were surviving an unnecessary grueling path. These people lived in history while their destiny was a short change away. We all have that choice sometime in our life.

You can make a conscious choice to accept what you cannot change and begin walking in the rain. Or you can choose to accept change when remaining in place becomes scarier than taking the chance to embrace a different and new normal. Behind you or in front of you... it's always your choice.

13 Tips to Release Anxiety

So many people I know are dealing with anxiety right now. I'm hearing about it from my clients. From friends and family. And from myself as well!

Anxiety is something I know a lot about. It used to be my constant companion.

But gradually, with the help of numerous mind-body techniques, I was able to let go, nearly completely, of all anxiety. What a miraculous relief!
Lately, though, anxiety has been cropping up for me again. It could be the ever-changing political climate. Could be the numerous disruptions and changes I've had to navigate during the last year. Could be a lot of things.

The problem is, I DON'T have time for anxiety! Who does?

Anxiety gets in the way of my work, my dreams, my creativity, my natural optimism, my happiness... my life!

Fortunately, I now have a wealth of tools to clear anxiety, almost immediately. So, unlike years ago, when anxiety was my constant companion, I can now easily release, relax, and let it go. Feels so good!

Here are some of my favorite anxiety-busters:

Deep Breathing - Deep breathing, from the abdomen, stimulates the vagus nerve. When you stimulate the vagus nerve, you stimulate the relaxation response.

Meditation - Meditation allows you to drop into deeper brain frequencies and relaxation. It is an effective way to observe your discomfort from a place of detachment. Connecting with your higher self, while observing anxiety, helps to diminish it. Meditate in silence, or try a guided meditation. If you're new to meditation, start with 5-10 minutes and gradually increase the time.

Self-Massage - Self-massage is a quick, powerful way to release pent-up anxiety and tension. Give yourself a quick foot massage, a neck and shoulder massage, a hip massage, a lower back massage, an arm and hand massage. Massage wherever you can reach, wherever you feel tense. It's amazing how powerful just a few moments of self-massage can be!

Tulsi Tea - Mmmm. Tulsi tea is one of my favorites! In fact, as I write this, I'm sipping a cup of it. Tulsi tea helps calm jitters, and balance cortisol, the major stress hormone.

Eat Green-Green veggies and green juices contain alkalizing minerals which help ground and calm the nervous system. Find your favorite, easiest way of eating greens, and eat plenty of them. Greens are absolutely essential, especially during times of stress.

Heart Breath - The heart breath will help you drop out of an anxious mind, into the peace of your heart. To use the Heart Breath, first take 3-4 deep breaths, bringing your breath down into your abdomen. Next, bring your breath up into your heart, and imagine that you are breathing in and out of your heart. Deeply, and slowly. Breathe this way for 1-5 minutes (or more!) Notice how it makes you feel.

EFT Tapping - Ahh, EFT Tapping. Again, one of my favorites. (no bias here!) EFT Tapping helps balance and reduce the stress hormone cortisol. It's a very effective tool for releasing anxiety and panic. The fastest way to use it is to use the fingertips of one hand to tap on the karate chop point of your other hand. The karate chop point is the fleshy part of your hand between your pinky and your wrist. Breathe deeply and slowly as you tap.

Affirmations - I've been using affirmations for a while now, and I LOVE them! I've created a number of affirmations for a variety of my goals and desires. So, when I'm feeling anxious or worried, I switch to a positive affirmation to counter my worry. Then, I repeat the affirmation over and over. The more I practice this technique, the more immediate the results.

Yoga - Yoga is a fabulous practice to release the tension, anxiety, and fear that gets tapped within the body. If yoga is right for you, find the yoga practice that's right for you. If you can't find a class near you, try an online program.

Gratitude List - Sometimes when we feel anxious, it's because we feel we're lacking something we need. Cultivate a daily gratitude practice which helps you acknowledge all the good in your life. This sense of gratitude will help you shift out of anxiety.

Creative Visualization - Similar to an affirmation, a positive visualization will help you feel more optimistic. If you're new to visualization, start with simple visions, within the realm of possibility.

First, decide what you'd like to see. What would improve your situation? Next, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and bring your vision to mind. Allow the vision to appear in whatever way is best for you. Don't force it. By allowing yourself to step into a new, better-feeling, possibility, you'll help yourself feel better, and you'll show your subconscious mind what to create for you.

Brain Wave Entrainment: Brainwave entrainment uses pulsing sounds, lights, or electromagnetic fields to stimulate the brain to fall into deeper, more peaceful, brainwave frequencies. This is a very effective technique, and numerous products are available online, and as MP3 downloads. Because these products are powerful, it's important to purchase them from a trusted source, and to do your own research on the effects of brain wave entrainment.

Let go of Caffeine - Last, and certainly not least, let go of Caffeine! Limit or omit it. Caffeine stimulates the adrenal glands, and therefore your stress hormones. If you need an energy boost, try a green drink, or a glass of water with lemon.

Life's too precious to waste it on anxiety!
In Courage,

This Is How To Get Unstuck And Make Necessary Changes To Empower Your Life

The Smallest Step Forward

The reason people tend to stay stuck in their circumstances, is because they expect change to come from outside of them, rather than from within.

It is as though they are waiting for permission to move forward when they must first take action themselves.

As the saying goes: Nothing changes, if nothing changes.

While some people have good intentions, their actions don't line up to support them. Granted, they may have goals they're pursuing, yet years later those goals remain in the distance because they didn't act on them.

"Doing nothing while the world around us changes makes us an inevitable victim to outside forces," writes author Scott Sonenshein in Stretch: Unlock the Power of Less -and Achieve More Than You Ever Imagined.

I understand sometimes it's easy to settle for the status quo by way of:

  • Living pay cheque to pay cheque, instead of taking real action towards your goals.
  • Being in a toxic relationship because you don't want to be alone or hurt your partner.
  • Working a job you loathe because looking for another one requires effort and change.
  • The pain associated with negativity is comforting because it validates the misery.

Most people are committed to change, but can't get past the hurdles that inhibit their progress. They may begin with great momentum, though a month later they are back to a familiar routine.
Change must come from within; even the smallest step forward is enough to propel you in the right direction.

This step can create the greatest change in your life, but must be accompanied by well-intentioned objectives.

"When you change your language from balancing to prioritizing, you see your choices more clearly and open the door to changing your destiny," state authors Gary Keller and Jay Papasan in their book The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results.

Change Your Thinking

Change requires EFFORT. Stepping out of your comfort zone, digging deep, stirring up passion, and going for it with all you have.

Have you considered why some people are successful and others are not? Successful people work towards their goals and understand that hard work (and wisdom) pays off.

Staying in your comfort zone is not conducive to your long term success. You must venture into uncharted territory if you wish to experience something new.

Inspired action is the result of empowering thoughts. So, to change your circumstances you must change your thinking.

At this point, change is often permanent once the individual has transformed their sabotaging thoughts. This is foreshadowed by a deeper realisation which gives way to real progress.

I am drawn to the passage by author Robert Maurer in his book One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way: "Radical change is like charging up a steep hill - you may run out of wind before you reach the crest, or the thought of all the work ahead makes you give up no sooner than you've begun."

Change requires courage and faith, yet has a ripple effect in our lives.

It can include a change in living conditions without having to move places. Sometimes, something as simple as rearranging your living conditions leads to a change in thought patterns due to the metaphysical relationship.

Similarly, a change in direction can trigger a shift in your career and is likely to reap benefits down the line.

Create Clear Goals

The change cycle reveals the six stages of change. Beginning with Loss, which is characterised by feelings of fear and being paralysed. It concludes with Integration, highlighting the satisfaction one experiences when settled into a new environment.

A new life is possible when you take consistent action, in spite of your fears and doubts. In this way, you make incremental changes without speeding up towards your future in haste.

Authors Gary Keller and Jay Papasan remind us once more that "Getting extraordinary results is all about creating a domino effect in your life."

It is important to embrace transformation because the knowledge gained is vital to your new way of life.

Without stating the obvious, life isn't about 'success' alone. However, most people want to be successful without devoting themselves to the hard work to get there. If we're not experiencing success (or accomplishing our goals and desires), something has to change.

Working with a leadership coach will help you get past the hurdles to create clear goals. An action plan to achieve them, and accountability are the keys to making progress.

Accountability is a motivating factor for those who seek change but don't know how to go about it. You are inspired to work towards definable goals since you have someone to guide and motivate you.

"If you ever feel yourself dreading the activity or making excuses for not performing it, it's time to cut back on the size of the step," affirms author Robert Maurer.

What about you? Where do you stand in relation to your goals for the year?

Are you on target to reach them?

Are you moving forward towards them consistently?

Are you happy with your progress?

What would you like to be different?

What does your optimal life look like?

So many questions to consider. Yet, if you don't examine them, you are likely to be drawn off-course by distractions and find yourself in a place not of your choosing, doing meaningless tasks.

I wish to leave you with a delightful passage from motivational author Brendon Burchard in his book The Motivation Manifesto: "We have forgotten that courage is a choice, and that permission to move forward with boldness is never given by the fearful masses. Most have forgotten that seeking change always requires a touch of insanity. If taking action before the perfect conditions arise, or before we receive permission, is unreasonable or reckless, then we must be unreasonable and reckless."

It is the sense of reckless adventure we must embark upon to bring fulfillment, passion and joy to our lives. Regret and resentment cannot dwell in the heart and mind of a person committed to their work.

Abandon your pain and disillusionment and reach beyond the comforts of your armchair to seek a life of wonder where dreams come true.

Dare to be exceptional. Dare to be bold. Awaken your inner spirit and alight the radiance of your highest self that summons you to create a life of passion.

Self Sabotage and How to Overcome It (By Gemma Garbett)

Self sabotage is one of the biggest ways that we don't achieve everything that we want from life. Have you ever been at a point in your life where everything is going great and then all of a sudden BANG! you have all of these fearful thoughts about not being good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough, etc.

This is the Ego's way of protecting you. The Ego has a pretty amazing role. It's the Ego's job to keep you safe, especially if you are in a life or death situation. However, it also tries to keep you safe from everything. Now I know that a lot of people view the Ego as bad, but I don't. It just has a job to do and gets overactive and takes on all of those fearful comments that we have hidden in the back of our psyche.

Take today for instance, I got up and meditated as usual, I got the kids ready for school. But I couldn't shift this blah feeling. I walked around feeling pretty heavy. A client cancelled, so that added to how I was feeling. But then I had a thought that stopped me in my tracks. What am I doing?! This isn't me!

I've been making some pretty big changes to do with my work lately and allowing myself to become vulnerable and I know that this feeling was my way of sabotaging what I was doing. All morning I've had the thoughts in my head of 'who are you to be doing this work?' 'Who are you to be a medium?' 'Go and get yourself another job.'

So here I was sitting here and I thought 'Right, I have all of these tools, how am I going to use them?'

So the first thing I did, was take out my journal and write out everything that I am grateful for in my life. I then looked at each item one by one and sent love to them. I send love by visualising each item on the list in a big pink bubble, but you should do what works for you.

Secondly, I looked at my why. Why am I making these changes? Is it for me? Is it for others? Is it to help people. I just let the words flow and didn't censor any of them.

Thirdly, I sat in meditation and visualised how I would feel when all of the things that I am hoping for come to pass. I created the feelings that I wanted to feel, the sounds I wanted to hear and I let my intuition guide me. If you are not someone that has meditated before, you can start by concentrating on your breath. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. At this time the Universe (or God, divine spirit, etc) will give you a few more signs or steps and you will go back to that place of certainty.

These steps can help you make subtle changes and keep self sabotage at bay. When you practice them daily you will see big changes in your perceptions and in your daily life.

Small Changes, Every Day - Real Change Is Only Days Away

The end of every year is a natural time to reflect on what's gone and to ponder what's coming. In reflection, there are things we can accept. In pondering, there are things we want to change.

I'm working on three things I want to do less, and three things I want to be more.

It has occurred to me recently that the signs are good I'm ready for change. I've made small changes that I didn't even decide to make consciously. The thought entered my mind - that would be good - and I practiced it twice or three times, and the habit's already in the shape of the making.

If we seek to change anything, our habits spring to the forefront.

Change is about habit challenge and conquest. We cannot change if we don't challenge our habits, and changing our habits necessitates a conquest. Change doesn't occur unless we're relentless.

Relentlessness is nothing if not a building force of enquiry and action in the direction of our goals. Small changes, made every day, prove that innovation energises confidence, and that confidence bolsters commitment.

As we plunge through the waves on the tempestuous ocean of life, journeying from distal and familiar lands on the past horizon, we get marooned on lands of unhelpful habit that are maintained in the present. We will need to embark on a fresh voyage away from familiar lands if we're to install change into our lives.

Commitment honours the intent of change, and confidence flourishes when commitment is solid. Small changes done every day show underlying commitment and are the way to build confidence.

Small changes that stick are better changes than large changes that don't.

Changing a Habit and Challenged Already? (By Steve Wickham)

Woman Wearing Green Top Reading Book

You wouldn't be the first person ever to choose a New Year's resolution and struggle in the first few days. For what seemed days or weeks before New Year's Eve there was a passion building for a fresh assault on a crucial goal. Now it feels hard and foreign.

You seriously wonder if you have the strength to sustain the changes you've made.

I've found that the first four days are the hardest in the change-of-habit process. But then there are temptations after this period, until about the forty-day mark. If change can be sustained until then, there's a great chance of the new practice becoming habit. But still there are temptations. There always are, until sufficient months have passed that mean we know we can easily get through the temptations. In fact, that which used to tempt us no longer has any power.

It was always months that I needed whenever I gave up smoking. It was the same when I gave up drinking. I probably didn't get entirely comfortable, though, until the year mark or more. With diets, vigilance was needed for only a short time until the brain knew what the routine was. But, importantly for weight-loss diets, I've found that creep is the biggest hidden temptation - to get soft on standards, by eating a little more or by allowing forbidden foods, until eventually the healthy diet is non-existent.

Some change-of-habit regimens seem so easy compared with previous efforts. It's important not to get complacent. Some change-of-habit routines are hard from the get-go. Every day is arduous. But there is a rich reward ahead if we continue...

ONE DAY AT A TIME

Once the challenge is set, we hold in our minds vision of what success looks and feels like. The more we do this, the more we make failure unattractive. And, focus on the process. Process focus cuts failure out of the equation.

Whatever you set yourself to do, you can do, if you just keep doing it.

A positive challenge requires courage which fills life with passion and purpose. To have made a resolution is a great thing! To stick to it through some days of pain, is to be filled with an inevitable joy because of the success we ultimately taste.

The Sky Is Not the Limit - The Power Of Positivity

We often hear the phrase "The sky is the limit" and often we hear this when the people around us are expressing their negative feelings on the topic at hand. But do you know that there is another phrase that contradicts this cliché? The phrase "nothing is set in stone" is the one that many successful people use whenever they try or aim for something and that, with the power of positivity, can make anything in this world possible.

The Power of Positivity

People who are successful use the power of being positive in everything they do. One of the concepts that is practiced in positivity is the law of attraction. The law of attraction might be a scientific concept but it is never truer and more applicable than to our society today. Many researchers believe that what people surround themselves with becomes their own actions and thoughts later on. It might not be obvious or apparent at the start and this surprises many when their actions or feelings are observed later on. This is the reason many sociologists or therapists recommend that individuals should surround themselves with positive things to ward off negative feelings.

Another area of being successful is to envision one's own desires and put it into action. Oftentimes, one wants to achieve something but lacks the desire to see it through. Many people blame others for their failure to reach their goals which produces negative results as well. When one wants to become successful, it is important to focus and put their thoughts into actions and carry the responsibilities that come with achieving what they want in life. By taking responsibilities and initiative, one is more concentrated and motivated to reach their goals in life.

What to do to Harness Positivity

When people want changes to happen to their life, they need to understand that they have to leave their comfort zone and start taking charge of their lives. It may be uncomfortable at the start and even cause friendships to end, but sometimes changes can be awkward but may also be the best thing to happen to your life. Cut the negativity that runs in your life - people who you think will drag you down and negative thoughts and envision what you want your life to be. Surround yourself with positive things, find mentors, visualize what you want and you will wake up one day and realize that you have achieved what you want to do and are happier than you were before.

Using The Power of Small Changes to Make Our Lives More Dynamic

Photo of Woman in a Sunflower Field

As a new year progresses, we frequently hear of broken New Year's resolutions to lose weight, renovate a house, learn a new language... Those who make these resolutions usually give up because they are unable to mobilize themselves for the hours of persistent effort required.

An interesting alternative approach to improving our lives is to think of small changes to make that do not require much time and effort but which imbue us with energy and will for making bigger changes. I call this using the "power of small changes." The following are some examples:

An acquaintance of mine had a really cluttered desk. He could not find the time to organize and file the clutter, nor could he think of anyone with the expertise to do it well.

One evening he got the idea that instead of having all those papers, magazines, journals and books lying on his desk, he could put them in boxes. In a few minutes he was able to do this. He wrote notes on the boxes to quickly let him know what each contained. He dusted the desk and arranged his writing accessories neatly. When he sat down at this desk, he said he was amazed at how positive he felt. With the clutter, he felt inundated by things to be done. Now he felt more in control. It shocked him that for years he had endured this disorder, and all the negative emotions it spawned, when it was so easy to replace it with calm and vibrancy.

A colleague wanted to start an exercise program but kept putting it off. She could never find the time to get to a gym and was too weary from her other duties to do much exercise. She was lamenting to a friend that she feared her health was being impaired because of her lack of exercise. He asked her to start running on the spot there and then. She did it, and in three minutes she got more exercise than she had done in weeks. She made running on the spot her exercise program. She was able to get vigorous exercise in a few minutes a day, and there was no time wasted travelling to and from a gym, readying to get to the gym, etc.

In an office where several of us worked, there was old furniture stacked in a corner. One day it dawned on us that this pile was an eyesore, an utterly drab intrusion from the past. It contradicted the spirit of progress and possibilities we promoted in our work. We quickly found a place in the backyard for it, and in less than two hours the pile that had diminished our lives for over a year was gone.

Look around you and think of small changes to make that can help you feel much better, that life is more of something you create than just a clutter. Removing that broken clock that has been sitting on the wall for years, rearranging items in your bathroom or in your closet, packing away things strewn around your apartment, reorganizing the utensils in your kitchen, clearing the dinner table of a pile of papers stored on it for years, starting an exercise program like the one mentioned above... can often be done very quickly. But they have powerful effects, create a sense of order, make us feel more positive about life and give us more zest for getting things done.

I have constantly been pleasantly surprised by how these small changes make us feel sharply better and increase efficiency. Do not underestimate the "power of small changes" for creating the vibrancy, energy and will to help us attain bigger changes that make us more dynamic and successful.

Important Considerations To Make When Planning A Lengthy Holiday

When you take a lengthy holiday, you don't just expose yourself to other people and places. You also greatly increase your appreciation for home. In order to ensure that everything is as it should be, you should make the following considerations.

It is important to notify your landlord and your utilities company that you will be away for some time. If any special changes to your utility services need to be paid, you can take care of them at this time. This way, you won't have any unexpected bills or late fees with either of these parties when you return home.

Another vital step to take is to clear out the inbox at your office so that no projects are collecting dust, especially if these things need to be taken care of right away. Make sure that you have a colleague who can field phone calls on your behalf and handle all emergency issues. Create a special, auto message for your email that lets people know you're going to be out of town and tells them when you're coming back.

Make sure that your car is in good working order before you go by getting it tuned up. Have your mechanic top off all your fluids. Even though the vehicle won't be driven, these measures can keep it from suffering undue wear and tear by ensuring that all parts are lubricated and protected against corrosion.

You also want to fill your gas tank all the way up before leaving, especially if you are going to be gone for several weeks. This is especially important for long holidays given that petrol can evaporate. A full tank will prevent sediment from building up in your engine and causing a costly clog.

Review your travel insurance policy to ensure that no oversights have been made. Having adequate cover is important for maintaining peace of mind. It will also give you access to the financial resources you need when unexpected problems arise. You can purchase this online from an insurance company or you can work with your travel agent to incorporate it into your holiday plan.

Have a back up plan in place in case you lose your wallet while away or overspend your cash reserves. For instance, you might want to open an account with an online that serves as a virtual wallet. You can also purchase travelers checks or have friend back at home who can wire you some extra cash. You can even leave some money with this person so that it's readily at hand should the time to send it ever come.

Think about using a domestic airport parking service to house your vehicle during your holiday. These companies can even turn your car on periodically for you so that the battery doesn't go dead. They will give you free transport to and from the airport so that you don't have to hitch a ride with friends or hire a taxi. Best of all, they'll keep your auto safe and secure all throughout the duration of your trip.

Why Old Habits Are Hard To Kill And How To Replace Them

Forming habits is a great evolutionary mechanism for us to automate repetitive behaviors.

It's a survival tool to our daily functioning as it frees up time, mental energy and thought processes. If every moment we need to stop, consciously think, and make an effortful decision as to whether we perform a behavior, we'll drive ourselves crazy.

However, this power of habit formation comes as a double-edged sword.

Of course we love the fact that we can automate our lives effortless, but when the old habit is detrimental to our future goals, we find it extremely difficult to change.

Brain Researcher Ann Graybiel in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been one of the core researchers on the power of habits for more than a decade.

She and her team found that although old habits can slowly be replaced by new habits, they can never be completely eliminated because once habits are formed in the brain, they become encoded in the deep brain structures known as the basal ganglia.

So there's literally a physical connection (aka. neural pathways) that's been formed in your brain that makes it extremely difficult to eradicate. Therefore habits are never really forgotten, they are always sneakily domiciling somewhere in your brain.

Secondly, when you make changes, you are stepping out of your comfort zone and it requires mental energy to continue doing something new. This switch in behavior deprives you from the old benefits you obtained from your automatic habits while it also requires you to invest additional effort into forming a new habit.

That's why you'll encounter great resistance during change.

So is there an effective way to change your habits?

Luckily Charles Duhigg, author of <The Power of Habits>, showed us it's possible. He found that "to change a habit, you must keep the old cue, deliver the old reward, but insert a new routine."

What he means is that you need to first identify the cue that's triggering the routine. Maybe it's seeing the chocolate cake, maybe it's 3:30pm every day, or maybe it's a certain location with certain people.

Then, the second thing to do is to identify the rewards that the habit is giving you. Maybe it's a physical pleasure, maybe it's an emotional feeling you like, or maybe it's a tangible gift.

The final step is to find a plan to replace your current habit/routine with a new one.

Meanwhile, you need to identify what he called "keystone" habits. These are the habits that will set a chain reaction that extends to all areas of your life.

Put in another way, when you focus on changing these important habits, you will benefit from multiple areas of your life.

When you follow the 3-step process and focus on "keystone" habits, you'll finally need to believe that change is possible. And that's why it's best if you seek support from a community of people who believe in you.

When they help you see that small wins are possible, you'll increase the odds of replacing your old habits with the new ones.

Aristotle says, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."

The question is, are you willing to invest in the initial hard work, time, energy and effort to replace the bad habits with the good supportive ones that will propel you to greatness?

Accentuate The Positive Every Day - Moment To Moment

Johnny Mercer a 1940's song writer and singer wrote the lyrics and melody with Harold Arlen, Accentuate the Positive. The lyrics remind us to look for the positive aspects of life, and simply eliminate the negative, latch onto the alternative and don't mess with 'Mister in between.'

The lyrics also remind us, "You've got to spread joy up to the maximum, bring gloom down to the minimum. Have faith, or pandemonium is liable to walk upon the scene."

Mercer's and Arlen's words remind us that every thought creates both a chemical change in the body and an electrical change in the nervous system. Thoughts contribute to a person's energy level, pain threshold, ability to accomplish one's goals and the health of personal and professional relationships.

To reverse, perhaps many years of negative thoughts, simply wearing a smile might not be enough to change your mood or experience. If you change only your thoughts and don't allow those changes to integrate into your actions, you are not likely to accomplish a real change in your life or yourself.

Sitting on the couch and thinking, "I will exercise every day," you won't see a better outcome in your physical health if you do not get off the couch and do something that proves you exercise every day. Sitting on the couch thinking about it is, Wishful thinking. You need to put in sweat equity to gain the physical health you desire.

Get off the couch, put on your tennis shoes and go out the door for a brisk 30-minute walk is a good start. Then, decide to walk every day for exercise and pleasure. Do the same thing each day adding a little more time each day. This will result in walking further and further, until walking every day becomes an enjoyable habit and you look forward to it. In fact, your mind will crave it.

Is it necessary to accentuate the positive to eliminate the negative? Yes, absolutely, however, you need to take positive actions too. As Einstein wisely stated, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results."

Accentuating positive thoughts coupled with positive actions equals positive results. Doing the same thing over and over won't become different results.

There are many moments in your life to make a pivotal change - This is that moment.

Are you willing to take the steps required to claim your happiness, success, fulfillment, and enlightenment? Will you take advantage of the opportunity to create a new reality for your life?

You can SHIFT and get prepared for what's uniquely coming up for your life... therefore, I want you to put your heart and soul into paying close attention to how much mental, emotional and physical distress you are in. Then, step by step you can make the necessary shifts to gently, easily, and without having to deal with the mental and emotional distress and stress of not knowing what to do, not feeling your best, and all the other OLD WAYS that are holding you back.

Remember you might need assistance to help you keep it all going. Here's to living your best life NOW.

There is no shame in asking for assistance to create happiness and success. Even if you have read the books, taken workshops, had psychic readings, taken prescriptions and OTC drugs etc. and still struggle; you might have emotional blocks preventing you from moving into your happiness and desires.

This is an investment in your happiness, success, fulfillment, health, and enlightenment that will pay dividends for the rest of your life. Engaging in the principles in this process will change your life forever and I urge you to experience it yourself as soon as possible. Remember only you can take care of your happiness and emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.

You are worth it. You deserve to grab onto your happiness, dreams, and desired success. What are you waiting for? You deserve to have someone take you by the hand and lead you through the maze of unknowns, or guide you through the obstacles or twists and turns. This is your opportunity to create the life you desire.

This is to your happiness, success, fulfillment, and enlightenment. I am here to only to be truly helpful. You deserve success, fulfillment, happiness and blessings you desire.

P.S. Imagine you won't go through another year without the success, fulfillment, happiness and blessings you desire. Here's your chance to make that transpire!

7 Fundamentals for a SUCCESSFUL LIFE

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit". Aristotle

All of us have a deep yearning for life and want something great out of it. For most of us success is on top of that list and we ask our selves how can we be successful? But the question you should be asking yourself is what does success mean to you?

Firstly you must define what success means to you, and then ask yourself WHO YOU HAVE TO BECOME in order to attract this into your life!

1.) Hold The Vision

Create a five-year vision, think about your future & write down the goals you can work on that will bring you step by step closer to achieving your vision. Immediately start taking action to accomplish these goals!

Read books like "Think And Grow Rich Rich" by Napoleon Hill & "The Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace Wattles

2.) Smart Decisions

First we make our choices then our choices make us. Small smart decisions compound at a rapid rate and will result in drastic changes. You can apply this strategy to all areas of your life from your finances to your health.

For example If you were trying to lose weight and you ate 200 calories less a day (a small packet of chips) in 30 days you would have eaten 6000 calories less & in one year 73,000 calories. Keep in mind that 3,500 calories of fat weighs 1 kg! IMAGINE THAT!

Read books like "The Compound Effect" by Darren Hardy

3.) Positive Thoughts

You can only get out of life what you put in! As the bible says in Galatians 6 "whatever a man soweth that shall he also reap". Think empowering positive thoughts, and you will have an empowered life!

Read books like "The Power of Positive Thinking" by Normant Vincent

4). Pay Yourself First

A part of what you earn is yours to keep! Starting with your next pay cheque take 10% off the top and put it to work for you. Money is a hard worker, harder than you. Money never gets sick, never gets pregnant, and is never disabled. Money works twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. Money gets its job done, and it asks for only directions and a firm master. When your money makes more than you do, you are officially wealthy!

Read books like "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George Samuel Clason and "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey

5.) Ask Questions

"Some men see things as they are and ask 'Why?' I dream of things that never were and say 'Why Not?'" - Robert Kennedy

As you have already learnt at the beginning of this article it is import to ask your self questions, ask positive & empowering questions which can induce a paradigm shift.

If you are faced with a problem, ask yourself what can you learn from this situation? how can I avoid it in the future? If you are feeling despondent, ask your self what am I really grateful for in life? what am I really happy about in my life?

Read books like Awaken The Giant Within by Anthony Robbins

6.) Leadership

An important part of being successful is your ability to be a leader, to help those who can't help them selves.

  • Smile, Listen, Greet people by their name.
  • Be genuinely interested in other people, make them feel important.
  • Let them do all the talking, LISTEN.
  • Don't wrong a person, admit your wrongs.
  • Give honest and sincere appreciation.
  • See things from other peoples perspectives

Read books like "How To Win Friends & Influence People" by Dale Carnegie

7.) Breathe

Don't overthink every situation, sometimes you just have to switch off that inner critical voice, disconnect & get present.

So take a minute with me now, sit back, breathe all air out your lungs and pause a few seconds. Now take a deep breath in through your nose, hold it for a few seconds and breath out slowly through your mouth. Close your eyes and repeat this a few times, only concentrating on your breathing.

Take 5-10 Minutes a day and repeat this!

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13
