Just As We See Through Our Minds, We Also Listen Through Our Minds & Not Our Ears

Not too long ago, I was at a shareholders' meeting for a business I became part of about a year ago. There were many of us there, but I have not met most of them as the communication was mostly done via text and there was one key person I communicated most with.

We were trying to resolve issues that the company was facing, and the arguments got heated sometimes, and in general, everyone was there with the intention to make sure everything worked out well.

At one point, someone took charge of the situation and started "to chair" the meeting. I wanted to know who this person was, and so I raised my hand and politely asked him who he was. Now, this is where it got interesting for me.

He was very defensive at the beginning, and he said that he was a shareholder like everyone else and he felt he had to do something. Which I was not against. But in his mind, he thought that I was questioning him, and he went on to say: then why don't you take charge! Woah I thought.

Luckily someone said to him: she just wants to know who you are as she has never met you. So all was well again.

I cannot presume to know what was going on in his mind but I can say for sure that he did not listen through his ears to my words.

Have you personally ever had an experience of presuming that someone is saying this instead of that? I have. We all have done it. And this inevitably caused unnecessary communication issues.

Why is it so challenging for us to listen to others through our ears?

It is because, we filter everything through our minds, through our experiences, our present mindset (including moods, mental stability), our past, our future goals, our education, and so on. The filtering process is pretty complex, and this is why no two people can ever have identical thoughts about something. The filtering process is quite sophisticated that it makes us who we are, it moulds us to become what we hope to be if we take control over this filtering process.

This is why, it is often said that we can tell a lot about a person just at the things they laugh about, or not. In my training, we use this method to see:

  • if they have a sense of humour,
  • at what level of consciousness they are at (in other words how evolved they are on the intellectual level),
  • if they quick-witted,
  • are they blinded by cultural/racial/religious differences,
  • how clear are they psychologically,
  • and what are their blind spots?

It is a complex system, isn't it? It is almost like psycho-profiling someone just through what they laugh about. This, I have found to be of greatest value in how I can assist someone in the coaching process. Of course, we do not just use humour; we can also pick up a lot just through normal conversations.
So indeed the key to communication and listening to others, is to listen openly and not allow our filtering process to blindside us. By doing so, we can truly listen and make the communication count.

How to Use Positive Affirmations When Feeling Anxious

The Power Of Affirmations
Writer and speaker Joyce Meyer wrote a book that became an international best seller, titled The Battlefield of the Mind. In it she discusses how our minds are indeed like a war zone, and how we must take charge of our thoughts. Many people have celebrated using the book's life changing advice. Joyce extended her study and discussion in a follow up book called Power Thoughts, which introduces a group of extremely powerful affirmations for use in different situations.

Positive Affirmations Have Power to Help You Overcome Anxiety
In work situations that are extremely stressful, and things can be becoming overwhelming, it can be easy to lose control, and want to take flight from the situation. If you practice beforehand, making your mind up that you will stay in control, and write yourself out positive affirmations, like the ones Joyce Meyer recommends in Power Thoughts, you will go a long way to overcoming feeling anxious.

Prepared Beforehand Leads To Successful Outcomes
You may feel a bit strange at first talking to yourself, and speaking out loud different positive statements, but eventually they will become natural. A well known psychological therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, examines negative, false, irrational and illogical thoughts that we have, and the participants are trained to recognize these, and then instantly replace them with a series of positive and affirming beliefs and thoughts.

Meta-Cognition - Think About What You Are Thinking About
Using positive affirmations is also extremely powerful, because it draws you into focused attention on what you are thinking about. When you are aware of your thoughts, that is meta-cognition. Awareness of your thoughts will help you to master any negative thoughts, and instead replace them with calming and positive thoughts. The beautiful and powerful thing about positive affirmations is that they can be used in literally any and every situation. They can turn an anxiety provoking event into a calm and successful occasion.

Taking Positive Affirmations One Step Further
When you begin your day, each day, take time to reflect on having positive outcomes in your day. Be grateful for the day that you have, and then speak out positive affirmations about your day. Speak positively about the situations that you will be facing that day, allow yourself enough time to get to things that you need to do, and keep yourself organized and avoid procrastination so you become really empowered to overcome anxiety for good.

Through Failure, a Better Way to Succeed

Success always waits to walk into the room after failure has embarrassed us. The key is not being put off by our embarrassment. Keep thinking appreciatively.

Shame and guilt cost us so much. We leave something prematurely, or become despondent, when all along it was persistence that was going to prove the way was worth it.

We are so bothered about how we look we lose sight of how wonderful we are when we say, 'Oh well, I'll keep going anyway.'

Our minds are our sharpest critic. Our shame gear kicks into overdrive and before we know it we are apologising for what many people did not even see.

Our hearts are so vulnerable. We want kudos for our works and initiative, when God is set on keeping it secret, so a richer reward would ultimately be ours.

The time has come to embrace the embarrassing faux pas and put it straight without feeling guilty. The time is ripe to make a hash of something with the intention of succeeding, knowing that our intention was sincere and pure. The time is now to be ready to fail.

We never intend to fail. We are never so brash. But in moving forward and ahead we shouldn't fear moving further behind. Indeed, when it seems like we're getting behind can actually be God putting us ahead - His strange way of reversing fortunes.

Imagine not being afraid of failure. Imagine not experiencing that anxiety that comes with performance. We can care and at the same time risk. Sometimes when we risk, we find the best way to care.

Our best successes come after we have failed and possibly many times. Success came because we did not give up.

3 Keys in Being Able to Use the Power of the Mind

When we first get a sense that our minds can have a significant impact on our lives, it is hard to believe. We can get curious about it and read up on it, but there's nothing like seeing proof in our own lives. At that point, we can still be confused about this power which is why we need to learn how to put it into perspective.

First, we need to look for evidence to understand the power of the mind and by making connections with our own experiences. There is certainly a reason behind all this and it is fascinating to search for our own answers. Second, when we apply this principle, we can grow exponentially by changing what's in our minds versus exhausting ourselves at changing our environment. Third, because we live in a universe where everything is connected, there's a proper way to do this.

1. Put a certain section of your life under a scope and look for patterns

We are conditioned to see things happen in our lives at random. However, if we look for a relationship between our personal growth and our experiences, we will start to see an organized purpose. The next step will be to ask questions to why events happened the way they did. Or what if they happened differently?

It may not be obvious at first but as soon as we start asking these questions, we open our minds to get new answers. They will come through insights, not necessarily through the analytical process. It is really important to be patient with this.

What we are really looking for is how the events in our lives are aligned with our state of minds. How were our thoughts, our perspectives, our emotions, our feelings? Well, what we perceive is our minds but everything really is coming from our subconscious minds. Then we may wonder if all our events, if not our reality have been created by the state of our subconscious minds.

2. Instead of working hard to change your environment change your perspectives

Most of us are conditioned to work hard at making the best out of our lives. In doing so, we do our best in taking the necessary steps towards our goals through the time and energy we have available. But at some point, we may feel that there are limitations. No matter what we do, there are things outside our control that block us. Then we are also limited by the time and energy we have, we often wish we had more. There's a way of letting our lives work for us, versus working hard in our lives.

The entire purpose of working hard at achieving our goals is to learn our lessons. However, this is a much slower process than what is available. When we develop the ability to find meaning in our life events, we change our perspectives. Much has to do with changing our beliefs. Understanding this gives us the power to manifest things in our lives much more quickly. In the process, we get deeper in touch with how the universe responds to our subconscious minds. At this point, the real challenge is to get better in letting ourselves take responsibility for our beliefs.

We are conditioned to have pride in what we believe. Our beliefs may have served us during the times we created them, especially if they acted as defense mechanisms. But as our lives change, we can let them go. We mostly forget what they are, until we realize that our lives are a reflection of them. This also means our lives can become reflections of the new perspectives we work on attaining. From here, we get to see evidence that there is a law of attraction. It doesn't mean we have the free will to create whatever perspective we want to get what we think we want. There are universal laws at work.

3. If you want to manifest things, they have to be in alignment with your purpose

Once we learn about the power of changing our perspectives, we will be tempted to manipulate our thoughts to want to manifest new things into our lives. I say manipulate because we could be mistaking our thoughts for our perspectives. We have the free will to change our thoughts, but our perspectives change when we come to deeper understandings derived from our life experiences.

Much of the law of attraction movement was about getting what we wanted based on the thoughts we were putting out. If it worked and was that easy it would be like everyone winning the lottery. What does work is when we remind ourselves of what we really want deep inside. Achieving wealth could be one of our common desires. However, I understand now that there is much maturity that has to be learned first before we can manifest it. Maybe it's part of the divine plan because something needs to change on how we collectively view money. The current model is becoming less and less sustainable.

Manifesting becomes more frequent and powerful as we become more aligned with understanding what perspective we ultimately want to achieve. I would say what we want to achieve is more presence and living in the moment. When doing so we learn to become more in touch with our feelings which results in a much deeper experience of happiness. It also means living less in the ego, but using the ego as service versus it running the show. The reason it is important to see through ego manipulation is because it will take us away from where we ultimately want to be.

Developing an increasingly deeper understanding of the power of the mind can lead us to an incredible journey of self-discovery and happiness. Let's be honest, what we really desire in terms of financial success is financial freedom, not a bunch of material possessions. They are just benefits. The easiest way to get there is to change our perspectives through becoming the best version of ourselves.

How to Work Through the Pain to Get to the Pleasure

Some, not all of us realize that we need to work through our experiences in a conscious fashion rather than analyze, over and over again in our minds what happened and tell ourselves, in our head, that we're okay and we're ready to move on. We tell ourselves such stories! Such tales of garbage.

The Ego is strong and wants to keep you petty and immature. The truth hurts sometimes, yes, it does free you from the constraints of your past history and allow you to see a different way to behave. This opportunity to see through a different lens rather than our own limiting view are the times when we access important information about ourselves and life that was always there but hidden. The learning process may not be easy, but it's full of lessons that bring us wisdom we can't find any other way.

The desire to press fast-forward leads to escapism, contradiction, and denial, all three of which prolong our difficulties and in some cases make them worse. Our willingness to be direct, clear, and courageous in the face of our circumstances gives us the tools to finding peace, understanding and love again, allowing us to move through the situation with resolutions not seen or available to us before.

Yes! I said resolutions! More than one. Armed with this understanding, you may begin to realize that trying to find the fast-forward button is probably not the best option, perhaps it's about pressing the pause button. When you truly grasp, deep down inside that the only way out of any situation in which you find yourself, whether it's easy or difficult is to go through it, you stop looking for ways to escape and start paying close attention to what is happening, in the moment.

This is the first step to shifting your current perspective and putting on a different lens. You, now present in this moment, realize that you are exactly where you need to be. You can now choose a course of action instead of doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. With this new found awareness comes something you didn't know before and will now help you make a better choice.

The process of awareness can be easy, gentle and kind or a hard hitting crack between the eyes, either way it depends on how willing you are to give up being right, making someone else wrong or dominating another and choose love, peace, or compassion instead.

Choose to see all perspectives. Get clear on what you would love in your life, is it getting along better with your spouse now that the kids are gone? Is it peace in your work relationships? Understanding yourself?

Love, passion, affinity, contentment, courage, all these feelings are available to you so are hate, annoyed, tense, fearful, guilt, shame. Positive thinking alone will not shift your perspective, but balanced thinking, which opens the heart to gratitude and love will. In the moment you might be ready to fire and employee but with perspective, balanced thinking, you'll see there's more going on than you thought.

When you feel the urge to press the fast-forward button, remember that you are not alone; we all instinctively avoid pain. But in doing so, we often prolong our pain and delay important opportunities to learn. As you choose to move forward in real time and see all sides of the circumstance, obstacle or challenge, ask yourself how does what I think stifle me or serve me?

This balanced thinking will lower your stress and increase your vitality, comprehension and enthusiasm.

One Big Secret To Having More Energy And Why You Need It

To Have More Energy We Need To Fuel Our Bodies And Our Minds

I was working with a group of business owners recently discussing their goals and aspirations and how to plan for them. I always begin with their vision for life, but inevitably we end up discussing the 'energy' it takes to start, keep going, stay balanced, appreciate your achievements, and do everything else that's required too. I believe this is especially important for women. Because I believe this is fundamental to all aspects of life, and to everyone, not just those in business I thought I'd share my thoughts here.

Remember, you need to put fuel in your car if you're going on a journey!

When your energy is running low and you can't keep going you could feel any number of these things:

Overwhelmed
Tired
Lacking enthusiasm
Not feeling in the flow
Lacking empathy, intuition or spirituality
What's the point?
No / low motivation
It's all just a bit too much
Things happen to you instead of everything falling in to place
You can't hear yourself think - let alone that quiet inner intuitive voice
One step forwards, two steps backwards
and plenty more.
If you feel like this - or similar - or if you just want to ensure you never do, you can do something to help you have more energy.

The Secret Is That You Need To Find The Right Combination Of Fuel To Keep You Going
It doesn't matter whether you have a massive life goal, a business idea, a busy family to look after, or anything else, we all need to look after ourselves first in order to do all the things that life demands. Or that we demand of ourselves.

I think there are four absolute essentials that no-one can continue to function without addressing.

Sleep - Are you getting enough? This is so important. Everyone is different but we all need a decent amount of good quality sleep overnight to ensure we are functioning at our optimum. It helps us to process all the things that go on inner lives, and also to regenerate physically. Personally I need 7 1/2 to 8 hours sleep. Ask yourself are you getting enough uninterrupted sleep? If not, is there anything you can do to help with the situation. I'll be writing more on this in the next few weeks, so watch this space!

Hydration - There is a consensus that 8 8 ounce glasses a day (about 1.9 litres) will keep you hydrated, improve your skin condition etc. There is also a school of thought that as your body is a self-regulating system you should go with the thirst trigger - i.e. when you're thirsty have some water. There is also conflicting opinion about what you should drink - just water, or does tea and coffee count? (there's even one study that shows beer can count but personally I'm not convinced this is such a great idea!) You can only go by what feels good to you. I personally know that when I drink 2 litres of (just) water or a combination of water and fruit/herbal teas, a day I feel more awake, have more energy and sleep better. I'll be doing some more research on this so keep an eye out. In the meantime, do you think you drink enough water? Be honest now, I know some people who go all day without a drink, is that you? What could you do to improve your hydration? Why not monitor it to see if it makes you feel better?

Nutrition - Food is the fuel that keeps our bodies and our minds functioning. If we under or overfill our tanks, we won't perform at out optimum. If we use diesel instead of unleaded we could have problems. Do you turn to high fat, high sugar snacks to get you through the day? Do you eat out of boredom, to procrastinate, or as a reward? Is this the best way to fuel yourself for all the things you want to or have to do in your life? Often the short cuts will have long term effects that we won't realise until it's too late. Lots of people say they can't eat breakfast. I was one of those people once, a long time ago. However, I know that if I fuel myself correctly in the morning I can get so much more done. This is especially important if I have a morning at the gym planned otherwise I won't make it through the classes. What changes could you make to improve the nutrition that your body receives?

Exercise - this may seem counter intuitive, but exercise really helps to improve your energy levels. If you can find the energy to exercise (eat good food!) then exercise will give you more energy to fulfill all the other things you want or have to do. It helps improve your mood, gets your heart and lungs pumping so you have more oxygen and nutrients being delivered to the cells of your body, you have more energy and stamina, and helps you to fall asleep faster, and have a better quality of sleep (just don't do it too late at night otherwise you'll be buzzing). I mix things up and change my exercise routines regularly. I love training with weights but the gym can be lonely, so currently I prefer classes, they are fun, you get to meet people and I think I work harder with a trainer in the room. I like high impact, cardio vascular training, but I also love yoga and dancing so I have a real mix of exercise going on, at least 4 times a week. What can you do to add some regular exercise in to your week? A brisk walk with the dog? What do you love to do? A dance class may be more appealing than a run.

What Happens If Your Car Runs Out Of Fuel?

Make Sure you Top Up Regularly To Ensure You Have More Energy to Keep Going.
These are my basic requirements to keep myself energised. I don't always succeed in all areas but I do know that if I feel a bit run down at any point, I'm missing at least one of them. There are two other slightly less basic needs that I have, and I believe most people do, so I'm going to cover them briefly.

Make Sure You Have Enough Alone Time As Well As Human Contact To Help Give You More Energy
When I spend a lot of time continuously with people, especially if I'm training or running a workshop I can eventually feel a bit drained. This happens for lots of reasons including simply the physical energy it takes to participate in the event. I know that I need some quiet time to myself to regenerate and get my energy levels back to normal. Meditation is great for this, as is getting out in nature, or even just a quiet cup of tea on my own without any other stimuli.

Conversely, too much time spent alone can drive me a little bit bonkers! When I'm home based and haven't had human contact for a while I can feel a bit low and de-energised. this is when I need to get out and remember that I'm part of the human race. Text messaging and email doesn't really solve it as it's silent, non-human contact. The gym helps, combining this element with exercise is brilliant but doesn't always fully fix the problems there's not as much interaction as I need. Grabbing coffee with a friend, having a good catchup on the phone, going to a social or business event, or rounding a few people up for a night out are great ways to feel that connection with others again.

Be honest, check in with yourself now and again and ask yourself, do I have enough energy to fuel my life, as I want it to be? Is there something missing? If in doubt, try it out. see what happens. Have you ever thought you wouldn't go to that class, or in that run, and then when you do you tell yourself off for forgetting how great it makes you feel? Remember those moments. Leave yourself notes if necessary!

Take the time to find your required fuel combination, and keep topped up to ensure you have more than enough energy to fulfil all the things you wish to in this life.

The One Thing You Need to Do to Find Real Happiness

Discover an underrated key to contentment.

Our minds create many thoughts that can lead to our being unhappy, the key phrase being, our minds create. The thoughts and beliefs that we hold affect everything about us. in most of the developed world, people are consumed by consumerism. So much of our unhappiness comes from wishing that things were different, wishing that we had something else instead of what we do have.
I remember meeting a woman once who had a beautiful daughter. She was very happy with her daughter, but she really wanted another child. Even though her husband and daughter loved her, she was utterly unhappy because she didn't have a second child. All of her mental energy, all of her mental commentary, went toward that focus and because of that, she suffered greatly. Those of us not in her situation may think that’s funny, or odd, but her story is a lesson I hope can encourage all of us to spend some time, maybe even at this very moment, to reflect upon the question, “In my own life, what am I focused on that I don’t have?

I can guarantee that if we focus on what we don’t have, we’re going to be unhappy, and we’re going to suffer. Our unhappiness can stem from anything that we’re focusing on. Maybe we think we’ll be happy when we lose those extra 50 pounds. Maybe happiness will come when we reach a certain financial level. Maybe when we get that promotion. Maybe we’ll finally be happy when we meet our soul mate and begin a new life together. Or maybe, when we have a child, then we’ll finally be happy. The list can become endless because the moment we fulfill one of our desires, a new one takes its place, and we just continue to suffer. We may want to be healthy, we may want to get a better grade at school, we may want our first car—the list can be endless.
In many ways, our lives are like that of the mythological king Sisyphus, sentenced to the eternal punishment of rolling a large boulder up a hill. But every time he reached the top, the boulder would roll back down, and he would have to start all over again; it never ended. I think sometimes our minds are like that—they just don’t stop. No matter what we desire or wish for, at any age, something else will come along and we’ll say, “Now I want that.” It’s almost shocking if you think about it, and it can continue throughout our lives.
Young children, for example, can’t wait to get presents on their birthday or Christmas morning. But often, and shockingly fast, they tire of their new toys and move on to something else. Does this really ever change? As we get older, our new toys become bigger and grander—a car, a home, a spouse—and yet we can still tire of them and move on. We want something different, something more.
We’re unhappy with what we have, and we’re always yearning after something different.
How do we get off this continuous and debilitating treadmill? Is there any freedom from our Sisyphean task? Yes—and it’s actually shockingly simple. All we have to do is be happy with what we have.
Again: All we have to do is be happy and be focused on what we have right here, right now.
But how do we do this in our daily life, when our minds so quickly tend to want to focus again on what we don’t have? A lot of it has to do with realizing that this type of thinking is not going to help us. We have to really believe that focusing on what we don’t have is going to cause us suffering. We have to believe that focusing on what we do have right now, what we’re blessed with, is going to put a smile on our face. In many ways, this is as powerful as E=MC2, and just as beautiful and simple. All we have to do is focus on what we have and not focus on what we don’t have. We have to be happy with what we have and not think about what we don’t have.
It’s that simple, that elegant, and that beautiful.
We have to realize that this changed philosophy isn't going to make the marketers and advertisers of the world very happy. They spend billions of dollars trying to get us to be unhappy with how things are now, so that we’ll want something different, so that we’ll feel “less than." Otherwise, we’re not going to spend money to buy what they’re selling. I don’t want to blame it only on the marketers, though. We’re just as guilty because we do the same thing to ourselves: We think about what other people have—success, possessions, love, whatever it may be. And because we’re thinking about what they have and what we don’t, we become unhappy. What if, instead, we focused on all the beautiful things that we have in our lives? Some of us may have less than others, but we can all still have a beautiful life.
If you don’t know this about me already, I really love to spend time at monasteries. When you choose to live a monastic life, you give up just about everything. Yet the people who live these simple lives are often the happiest people I have ever met in my entire life. They can have virtually nothing, as we know it, and still focus on what they do have. They may not have material possessions, but they have a love of life, right here, right now—and they’re very happy.
Why can’t we do the same? Why can’t we focus on what we do have? Maybe we have a beautiful family, even though we might not have the nicest house in the neighbourhood. Maybe we don’t feel very well physically sometimes, but we are free and able to go for walks in nature and can enjoy being outside. Maybe we haven’t yet found the love of our life, but we have friends who care about us whom we get to spend time with. The list of things we do have can go on for a long time if we start focusing on them and celebrating them. Again, it doesn't have to be much: Just going for a walk in the early morning, when everything is peaceful and still, can bring us happiness beyond our wildest imagination. Just connecting with friends can be more valuable than staying at the world's grandest hotel. The list of what we do have and what we can focus on can go on and on. By realizing what we have instead of focusing on what we don’t, we discover one of the key secrets of happiness.
Once we do this, then we can live a beautiful, happy, fulfilled life
