Optimize Your Business Results by Igniting Motivation and Focusing on Your Mission

woman in white shirt using smartphone

There's nothing like a crystallized Mission to clear your vision and help you focus on only the relevant tasks that will make that overriding goal a reality. By first defining a Mission Statement that you can wholeheartedly commit to and identify with, you protect yourself against the Time Bandits like Uncertainty and Busy Work that will leech away your energy and concentration.

Now, many in our business break their Mission down into two statements: one defines their purpose and the other is their personal motivator that gets them up in the morning.

For example:

My Mission is...

To make the buying and selling of real estate as cost-effective as possible, while maintaining the highest level of service. To provide accurate and up-to-date information, skilled analysis and sound real estate advice. To continually explore new ideas and technology, to make the selling and buying of real estate faster, less costly, and easier for the consumer.

My Future Vision is...

To be the leading Real Estate Agent from North to South Richmond, always exceeding my customers' expectations and providing them with a totally positive service experience.

In short: to provide the best service and to be recognized for it.

You'll notice that neither statement mentions money. Do you wonder why?

Money doesn't motivate. What you can do with it might, at least for a while, but ultimately there has to be more to life if you're going to keep enjoying what you do and being rewarded for it.

Enjoying the business is motivating. Learning new things, interacting with positive people, putting together creative deals - now, that's motivating. Not wasting your time on extraneous tasks is motivating. And, if you conquer those goals, you'll be a success and LOVE doing it.

Let's take a look at how you can optimize your time and stay excited in this business:

Define Your Mission to Reflect Your Goals and Values: What do you want your business to achieve? How do want people to think of you? Don't get sidetracked by focusing on how much you can make or how soon you can retire - those ideas won't sustain success. Instead, concentrate on developing your company as a complementary reflection of the best version of yourself. As an agent, you're in the business of helping people come home. You facilitate them in achieving the life they want and, along the way, you reap the rewards within your own life.

Once you are clear about your goals and direction, you will save yourself inordinate amounts of time. From this point forward, when faced with a new decision, you can simply refer back to your Mission and ask yourself, does it fit? You now also have an encapsulation of your business that you can provide to clients if they're unsure about your values.

Get Comfortable Saying "No" to the Time Bandits: Success attracts attention from all manner of sources and, especially if you're a 'people person,' you'll be approached with numerous requests for your time. To stay motivated, effective and efficient, you'll need to say "NO" (politely) more often. It becomes easier with practice although, at first, you'll find yourself frequently referring to your Mission and Purpose for clarity. In the end, you'll discover that your own respect for your time and goals will be reflected by those who come to you. Finally, they will understand what you're about and what you value in life and business.

Learn from Everything and Keep Exploring: Every mistake or disappointment holds a lesson within, if you choose to learn it. And, once you do, you save time by not repeating that negative experience. Often, such analysis will also uncover new ideas and, if you're serious about building your business, you'll want as many of them as possible:

· Identify resources you can trust and draw from them.

· Try new activities and take on learning projects - your brain is a muscle and needs to flex.

· Keep up-to-date with current affairs and local news.

As you accumulate knowledge, keep asking yourself, "How can I apply this idea to my business or personal development?

Associate with Positive People from All Walks of Life: As long as those around you are creative, constructive and energetic, it doesn't matter if they're in the same business or not. Their energy will feed your own and you'll learn more from other disciplines than you would if you limit yourself to just one sector. As a side benefit, this varied interaction also increases your referral base as long as you don't 'sell' yourself.

Train your Assistants and New Associates with Care and actively listen to their ideas and suggestions. Fresh input is vital for maintaining your own motivation, but be careful about how you ask for it. A business will stagnate if the major players are too alike, but they must at least share similar values and goals. Even opposing opinions can be energizing if you keep a sense of perspective and objectivity.

Balance your Business Activities with Rest and Diverse Pastimes: Overworking is not efficient. You make poor decisions and communicate ineffectively when you're tired, which wastes more time than it saves. Replenish your energy with complete rest and hobbies that totally transport you away from your work activities.

Reward Yourself for Achievements and Completions, and celebrate the success of others. Even if it's just a small reward like a fancy coffee, take a little time to mark the win, it does wonders for everyone's motivation.

The combined impact of Mission and Motivation cannot be overstated in terms of how much time they will save you every day. If you can marry the two, you'll also create a synergy that will energize you even in the slow times and downturns. And, as you and your business mature over time, don't forget to revisit your Mission so that it remains in harmony with changing goals and refined values.

Effective business productivity resulting from solid Lead Generation all start with a Mission and Purpose statement that is built on what you really believe in. Who wants to work with anyone that is unclear on why they are a real estate agent and what they really stand for. When you operate your business consistently and professionally with solid unwavering beliefs, the consumers will find this an attractive benefit that will cause them to trust you and stick with you.

Your Only Limit Is You

man standing on rock under green aurora borealis and white clouds

Nowadays, the belief that your only limit is you is an actual fact. Each day, ever more evidence comes to confirm this point as an inevitability. You should be aware that your mind is everything and controls every aspect of your life. It has even a significant influence over your body.
How is it possible? Why is your mind creating limits? How can you get past those boundaries?

To begin with, your body hears all things your mind thinks or says. So, if your mind, for example, can talk your body into feeling right or wrong, what else can it do and what power does it have? Have you ever paid attention to the way you speak to yourself? What does it look like?

The difference is how you look at the glass, is it half empty or half full? You see, when you think about it, your only limit is you. Perhaps you have never actually considered this small distinction as necessary before. However, it can make an enormous divergence in what you achieve in life. Only because when you believe that you cannot, you put a limit on your potential.

The fact is that when you let your thoughts wander, and your mind consider that there are limits, you start to get doubts. Therefore, you think your glass is half empty, and you tell yourself that you cannot. Then, of course, what unfolds is that you begin to believe that you cannot indeed.

You declare stories to yourself which in turn your mind believes, and it then shows that the only limit is you, just you. These fictions are internalized, and they slowly become part of your identity. You have to be careful of which stories you are feeding yourself because they will start to reflect in your life and your outcomes.

The Only Limit Begins in Your Mind
To get rid of any limit, you have to establish in your mind that what you desire is stronger than anything else you want. Then, you have to burn the bridges behind you and say once and for all that this is it. That way, you have no retreat and no choice but to continue all the way to achievement.

To go for what you want is not so hard if you are determined, but to stay motivated is what is challenging. It is quite easy to dream big when your dreams are just in your head. The only limit comes when you have to do the tough things such as the everyday grind, the perspiration, and the hard work.

Your only limit is you since there is a lot of power in determination. So, you have to begin to pay attention to the way you talk to yourself and get control of it so that the stories start to be positive. Your mind and body will respond, and limits will fade away. You will begin to have better outcomes. In turn, it then attracts good things and better people to your circle. As a result, you start to realize that the only limit is you and believe that you can do anything you set your mind to do.

The Only Limit Is You
You are not stuck, incapable or without talents. To learn and know more, you can read a book, take a class, then move on to the next thing, because you are not a victim of your circumstances. You get to decide if the only limit is you. So, make a conscious choice to move the needle in an area of your life that has been frustrating you.

You have to be dedicated, committed and willing to struggle through the learning process. Do not back down from a challenge. One of the greatest ways is to remember why you are doing it in the first place. Whether your objective is to get fit, be a champion, learn a new thing, or start a business, it does not matter.

If there is something that you decided to go for; then there is a reason you decided to go for it. And yes, at times, it is going to be hard as hell. It even going to feel impossible sometimes, but you have to recall why you are doing it. You have to remember that you do have all the skills you need and that the only limit is you.

Believing in Yourself Tears Down Limits
Accomplishment is your duty, your obligation, and your responsibility. You have to forget and let go of what other people think or tell you; it is their mind talking, not yours. Listen to yourself instead. And know that you cannot better yourself if you come with excuses why other people are successful. It is a dangerous game to think that you have limits.

Believing in yourself is the best thing you can have as it tears down any doubt you might have. It is hard to get over doubts even you do not believe in yourself, and it cripples you. Disbelief, uncertainty, and doubt are things that make everything else seem impossible. So when you realize that your only limit is you, you find a way to believe in yourself again and therefore, nothing can stop you anymore.

There is no escape; everybody has a hard road. But your mind is everything. If you do not believe you can do something, then you cannot. You have to fight to get greatness. It is like having to save your own life. Nobody is going to do it or save it for you.

Limit and the Power of the Mind
You got to give everything you have to get where you want to be. Dwelling and crying won't help a bit. If you quit, you are going to lose. When you have a resolution, and I am not talking about a New Year resolution, but a real one, something to accomplish, you have the resolve, and you know that it is going to happen.

So, your only limit is you. If you are ambitious, you have to show it. You have to push yourself to do your very best and go beyond your limits. You have to understand what giving everything looks like. In life, it is always up to you. Just know and believe that tremendous power rests in your hands. It does not matter if you are a king or a slave, you have power, and that is the power of your mind.

You should take an honest look at your life. See and realize that as humans, we are conditioned to delude ourselves, even lie to ourselves by not taking a good look at the results we are getting. If you do so, ask yourself if you are actually living the way you want to live.

Eliminating Any Limits You Have
Work, determination, discipline, and ethics eliminate fear, doubts and the limit you have which is you. You have to go for what you want with everything you got. Take a risk because later on, you will look back and you can say: "I used the most out of this day as I possibly could." And that is what living is.

It is better to reach for the moon, and land among the stars, than not aim at all. It is better to try and fail, than not try at all. The reason being is that you do not want to live with the idea of what would have happened if you just tried. Your destiny is in your hands, and you have to go after it.

Again, the only limit is you because if you are convinced you are going to fail, fall or get hurt, it will come to fruition. It is what you are visualizing. You have to be willing to fail but do not ever imagine yourself failing. It is what stops a lot of people, and that is really what separates people from accomplishing or being what they could truly be.

Knowing Your Only Limit Is You
At some point, their mind says "Oh no, I cannot do this. I am incapable of doing it. I probably get hurt or fail in the process." But if you approach anything you want to achieve with that hesitation, you will inevitably fail. Instead, you should approach it like it is going to work and that you can figure it out, no matter what it is, even if it takes you months or years.

You have to believe you can do it because your only limit is you. Mohamed Ali, way before he became a legend, told everyone what was going to happen as he said he was going to be the next world boxing champion. When you do think that way, it is an all different ball game.

A lot of people do not get the fact that the only limit is themselves. But it is your life, your moment and it does not matter what you have been through. You are the only one who can make the decision. If you want something great in life, you have to make sacrifices and do things that most people are not willing to do.

By knowing that your only limit is you, you can use your determination to take action and do so. You have to prepare and get ready to get to the top by looking at the summit and not to the bottom. You have to be inspired and keep striving to be the best you can be. So, I wish you great success!

7 Ways to Motivate Yourself to a Good Workout

1. Chuck all those fashion magazines away

First things first, you are not striving to achieve a healthy and active lifestyle to look a certain way or to become a certain body size. Nobody is made from the same mold - everyone's physique and genes differ. Whatever body features you have, embrace them and be proud of them. Stop reading magazines where every model has photoshopped images and have unrealistic beauty standards. Grab yourself some health related magazines or books to read on to know how you can make better health choices.

2. Get a workout buddy

It is always great to have a workout partner with you whether it is a friend, spouse, family member etc. Having a workout partner is a good idea because you can pump each other up and stay motivated if either one of you does not feel like working out.

3. Load your iPod with motivational songs and lectures

Make a separate playlist of motivational and inspiring songs that would pump you up for an awesome workout. YouTube is full of motivational speeches related to workouts that can keep you running on the treadmill for hours or jogging in the park early in the morning.

4. Build rapport with your trainer

It is always best to build a good relationship with your trainer. Your trainer will push you harder and motivate you to finish that last rep of squats or a 30kg bench press. There are many people who go to the gym and never bother to even have a conversation with their trainers and just do half hearted workouts and leave. You will be twice as likely to stay motivated in the gym knowing that there is someone watching over your exercises.

5. Workout as soon as you can

Head to the gym directly from work instead of going home because once you are home you will feel lazy and won't feel like going to the gym. Most companies have their own gym, so take full advantage of that as well.

6. Set an alarm

Set a workout alarm and reminder on your phone so that you don't have any excuses of "forgetting" to workout.

7. Find something that you love and substitute it for a workout

Gyms are not for everyone and that's OK because there are other options that you can take such as yoga, Zumba or swimming etc. All these are body toning activities and you end up feeling more energized after doing them.

Bonus tip:

It's a given that having a healthy diet goes hand in hand with an active lifestyle but every now and then if you miss a day of a workout or eat something unhealthy, don't let it make you feel guilty and give up. Everybody slips up, you just have to be persistent. And who said, a few cheat meals here and there aren't allowed?

7 Helpful Tips To Sustain Your Motivation

When it pertains to getting things done, motivation can be hard to come by. Yet, that is precisely what is required. A small amount of motivation is needed to do little, simple things, like brushing your teeth. Larger jobs require more motivation to complete.

But how do you find motivation when you have none?

Discover how to really motivate yourself and you'll achieve more:

1. Use pain. If you cannot complete a specific job, what are the consequences? It may simply be the inconvenience of having more to do the following day. Or it could be the possibility of someone stopping by and seeing how dirty your home is.

Create several good reasons why failing to do complete a task would be painful to you.

2. Use satisfaction. Saving back $25 today might not be too exciting, but the vacation getaway you'll be taking next year is pretty terrific. Remind yourself of all the advantages you'll receive. Make a long list that will help to keep the fire burning inside to effectively handle those undesirable or dull tasks.

Envision the future you expect to enjoy from getting your jobs completed. Rehearse your successes in your mind over and over. Produce an image that motivates you take the next action enthusiastically.

3. Set short-term objectives. It's hard to stay motivated on a goal for more than 8-10 weeks. So, if you have a goal that will require a year to achieve, you'll run out of gas before you achieve success.

Break objectives that take a prolonged amount of time into smaller sized goals that can be achieved within 2 months.

To paraphrase Henry Ford, "If you take a large job, and break it into small parts, you'll make it easy."

4. Make the job more satisfying. Raking the leaves might seem like a terrible way to spend the afternoon, but what if you listened to your favorite music while you raked? You could even invite a few friends over for a cookout and ask them each to bring a rake, for a "barbecue raking" party!

Ask yourself, "How can I make this task as pleasurable as possible?" then listen to the responses you get.

5. Give yourself a reward. You would not go to work daily if you didn't earn money. The benefit you get suffices to keep you returning every day. Apply the very same idea to keep your motivation high enough to get things done. Think about a couple of things you truly take pleasure in and utilize them as motivation.

Just feeling pleased with your achievements can be a type of reward. Those that struggle with motivation are often hard on themselves. Enjoy your accomplishments and you can be sure to enjoy more progress in the future.

6. Take a deep breath. Few things will drain your motivation faster than an over-stimulated mind. Stay clear on what you're attempting to achieve and concentrate on the most direct path to obtain it. Deal with one task before moving on to another.

Keep your brain focused on your current job. Meditation is an effective tool for learning how to focus better.

7. Include another person. Going to the fitness center daily can be difficult. However if you know your exercise partner is awaiting you, it's harder to stay home. The presence of others can increase your level of commitment. Reach out to a friend.

Without motivation, willpower is the only option, and willpower is far more difficult to sustain than motivation. Learning how to control your motivation comes with learning how to manage yourself. There's little that can't be accomplished when you find out how to manipulate your level of motivation. Even the most difficult jobs end up being manageable.

10 Ideas to Help You Stay Motivated

I often wonder what motivates us to stay productive. It's one thing to produce a positive result and yet another to consistently repeat that positive action. Only motivation, which comes from two sources, can keep us consistent.

1. Our own internal drive, self-talk and attitude. How we speak to and treat ourselves affects what we are able to accomplish.

2. External influence from family, friends, leaders and other people we look up to or hold in high regard. The advice or guidance we receive from others affects what we feel about ourselves and our capabilities.

The question is, what direction does the motivation take us in? One that leads to positive, productive results or not. It is up to us to very intentionally make adjustments to what we allow into our thoughts/minds. We must make decisions about that kind of talk we entertain and learn to discard negative thoughts or words.

Below are 10 thought-provoking ideas I feel lead us in the right direction.

1. Showing up is largely a result of self-motivation.

Absolutely! If we don't motivate ourselves to get moving it's harder to show up or be present during our normal daily activities. Our motivation should discard any negative feelings that prevent us from showing up to meet our commitments.

2. A positive attitude fuels inner drive.

Try it! There's no doubt that when we're positive, we get more done with less effort.

3. There's power in words. We should speak positively about ourselves and others.

Words are powerful when used right they motivate and encourage. We must always consider the result or outcome of our words before we speak.

4. Self-discipline over a period of time yields desired results.

There are tougher challenges in pursuing self-discipline than we realize. The results however are powerful and priceless - let's stay focused.

5. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how long the tunnel.

There will be moments when we are tried and tested personally and professionally. We have to focus on where we need to be, our finish line, in order to stay motivated and productive while going through the tunnel.

6. We know we are motivated when we consistently go the extra mile.

Internal motivation coupled by the external push from supporters and those who cheer us on fuels us to keep going.

7. Creativity helps build confidence & ownership.

Thinking outside the box and curiosity drives us to greater heights.

8. To be productive and efficient we must stay informed.

Having the right information at the right time motivates us to pursue our goals. We must seek and desire to gain the knowledge consistently.

9. We experience greater satisfaction when our work speaks for itself.

Actions speak louder than words. The results of the action we take to back up our words keeps us motivated. "Well done is better than well said." ~Benjamin Franklin

10. We are motivated by leaders that are authentic and engaged.

It's important to form relationships and/or follow leaders that motivate us to be better. Strive for excellence.

Absolutely Great Tips To Facilitate Amazing Personal Development

Setting goals for success and self-help can be challenging. While the road to a better you is often paved with pitfalls and obstacles, you can complete the journey, with the right information on your side. This article reveals several sure-fire ways to increase your self-esteem and become a happier, more effective person.

1 - Visualizing your own success is important to the process of achieving goals and attaining success. Without a positive outlook, it is much easier to arrive at defeat. By setting your goals high and imagining your success, you can carry yourself through trials and roadblocks; having something to pursue and a hope in front of you can determine whether you succeed or fail.

2 - Personal development is a process of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. Some goals are their own rewards. Other goals could use a more tangible reward, though. Rewards for success should be set in advance so they can be used for motivation. Treating yourself to a reward for a goal achieved also reinforces the success of the personal development process and encourages you to stick with it.

3 - Try setting a schedule for working out. A good weekly schedule can keep you on track and keep you from forgetting or having to reschedule your weekly routines. This is also a great way to stay motivated and reach your fitness and weight loss goals.

4 - Distract yourself. If you are feeling overwhelmed and anxious, try to distract yourself from your problem. If there is nothing you can do about what is bothering you, obsessing is just going to make it worse. Instead, try to shift your attention to something interesting that you can actually enjoy.

5 - Improve your diet. Having a poor diet can make you feel unwell or depressed. Make sure you are eating plenty of complex carbohydrates. A diet that is low on complex carbohydrates can cause a deficiency in serotonin. Not enough serotonin can go a long way in making you feel depressed.

6 - Make flashcards from your text's glossary. Don't cut the pages from your book. Photocopy each page. Carefully cut out each term and its definition and tape them to their respective sides of miniature flashcards. If you are careful you can often fold the definitions and term in such as way they fold right around the edge of the card.

7 - Identify your current strengths before you try to change your perceived weaknesses. A key component of personal development is having a true understanding of your whole self. Unfortunately, personal development often focuses only on weaknesses. Often, improving an already developed strength may be more helpful to achieving your long-term goals.

8 - Don't be afraid to complement other people on the things that make them great, even if he or she is a perfect stranger. Receiving a heartfelt compliment from someone you love is uplifting. But think about how wonderful it feels when someone who you do not even know, comes-up to you and gives you a killer compliment.

10 Tips To Get Your Week Started on Motivation Monday

People have asked me plenty of times how I stay motivated. They've asked me if I ever get tired of working at break-neck speed. The answer is simple. You have to figure out ways to remain motivated when you're looking to accomplish your dreams and goals.

We're not robots. Some days are better than others. But, on those down days, you have to figure out how to stoke the fire. You can't reach your goals without the motivation to get there. It takes consistency and persistence; especially on the days you're tired or are getting push back and just want to quit.

1. Choose Your Life's Theme Song: I wrote about this in my motivation book. If you don't have one already, get a theme song. Music is a great motivational driver. I have three songs that motivate me: "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel, "Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins, and "Show Me the Way" by Styx. There are plenty of tunes to choose from. Pick a song and play it when you need to get a boost.

2. Don't Be So Serious: I get it: Life is serious. But, it doesn't have to be that way all the time. I know we all want to achieve our goals and dreams and that takes work, but you have to have some fun. If you ever visited my offices, you would see a place where people work exceedingly hard, but the atmosphere is fun. The same is the case in my house. We take time out to enjoy little things because the only way to any success is to enjoy the process.

3. Don't Do It Alone: Not too long ago I heard the founder of a major company say that she did not tell a soul about her idea for her product for a year. She wanted to focus and not have any pushback. I don't tend to agree. What I've found is that telling everyone is the way to go. It helps keep you accountable. And, if you get pushback and you stop, well clearly you really didn't want to make that particular dream happen. I prefer not to do it alone, but if going it alone works for you until you're ready, do it.

4. Embrace Failure: If you're not failing, you're not really trying. Period. We live in a world that is all about "winning." That's great. We all like to win. But typically you can't win without failing. "Fail fast and fail often" is embedded in the American business psyche. I've noticed that entrepreneurs and freelancers get this, but many others don't. Change the narrative in your mind. Failing is okay. It shows you're trying. Just get up and keep going when you fail. Don't stop.

5. Take It In Small Parts: I'm a big believer in dreaming big and having a grand vision. Why not? Dreams and goals are aspirational. They're not meant to be little. If you're dreaming big, that's great. Keep those dreams alive by breaking them into small parts. It's almost humanly impossible to do something big and grand in one fell swoop. It takes a lot of parts to make the whole. So, break your dreams and the vision into smaller achievable parts.

6. Reward Yourself: When you accomplish a piece of your dream, reward yourself. It's important to give yourself something for having done a great job. Alternately, when you have a particularly tough day or period of time trying to get from A to B, take a time out. Do something for yourself. It doesn't matter what it is. Just do it for yourself. Consider it a "pre-reward" for then turning around the next morning and not quitting. Reward your tenacity.

7. Be Visual: Earlier I mentioned music as a motivator. Any goal or dream also requires some sort of visual. Use it as a reminder of where you're going. It doesn't matter if it's a Post-It note on your refrigerator or vision board full of pictures of the life you want to lead. Whatever it is, get it on paper somehow and make sure you look at it every day. Don't write it down and place your dreams in a drawer-literally. Get the written or photographed dream and plan somewhere you can see it daily.

8. Be Thankful: This one is an important one. I think a lot of people forget they have a lot to be thankful for in their lives. I've spoken to people who are going through a tough time and they tell me that they're offended when someone tells them, "Well, at least you don't have cancer and you have food to eat." Their point is that suffering in this world is relative. One person may seem to have it worse than another, but to any person, whatever they are personally suffering is still tough. My thinking is that no matter what, there's always something to be thankful for in life. Maybe it's simply a sunset, a song, a smile from a stranger or a hug from your kid. Be thankful every day for one thing-no matter how large or small. It helps.

9. Don't Take Your Eye Off The Ball: We're human. Sometimes we're not at our best. If you are having a down day and can't muster the strength to keep going, it's okay to take a day off. You have to be kind yourself. The trick is in not allowing it to become two days and then three days. If you need a break one day, that's fine. Get your strength back. But, the next day, get back to business and do something toward your dreams.

10. "Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give up.": Those are the words of Winston Churchill. He said them to a group of students after London had endured 57 bombings by the Germans. You never give up. You look in the mirror and you never give up. When you give up, here's what happens: You're defeated. So, on those days when you feel like hanging it all up, don't dare. It'll pass. Breathe and keep going.

Turn Any Problem Into An Action Plan In 4 Easy Steps (By Alex Quill)

Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough. - Og Mandino

I'd love to be always determined as well, you know!

I've been analyzing the past few years of my life and I came to the conclusion that my productivity and my success were always going hand in hand with my daily motivation. I'm a disciplined person overall and I can force myself to work long hours every day. In fact that's what I've been doing for the past years since I've got my first paid job.

Life goes on and so do our goals. I always wanted to become an independent professional, but I could never find the inner strength to sit down after work and dedicate some hours to develop my own business. The temptation to lay on my couch and relax while watching my favorite TV show was too big. My social environment wasn't helping either: everyone was in the same situation as me and they called it a "normal life". Which is not wrong, if you ask me. Having a stable, well-paid job is a privilege nowadays. But we always want more.

I'd lie if I'd say that I wasn't doing ANYTHING in order to achieve my dream. I was trying to find the strength to work on my goals after work whenever I could. That wasn't bringing any results though, except that it made me ask myself several important questions. In fact, that was the first important thing I've learned about procrastination:

1. The first step is about accepting that there's an actual problem

It was Monday night. I've decided to accept my friend's offer to write an article for his newspaper. He said that it could be a good starter for me - if I succeed, I could reach thousands of people. It was a topic I knew pretty well and the whole deal was about doing a little additional research and compiling my knowledge on an easy-to read and engaging way. The only problem was that I was feeling tired and empty inside. I was simply sitting in front of my PC screen, checking my cell phone from time to time. Not that I was waiting for someone specific to message me, it's just I wasn't feeling like I was focused or inspired enough to start writing.

After an hour of wasted time, I've realized that I'm waiting for a miracle. I'm waiting for the inspiration to come in out of nowhere and do the job for me. And that's not how success comes to people's lives. That's not how motivation comes. So the first step to overcome procrastination was to reveal the problem. There are many ways to do that; I've used the simplest one (in my opinion) which was about being honest with myself and writing down the problems I was facing:

a. I'm feeling down and tired.

b. I don't feel too excited about the things I need to do.

2. You can only start fixing something after you've figured out the cause of the problem

Now that these problems were finally revealed, the time came to look for their roots. Why? Because knowing that I'm not motivated wasn't pointing me to a solution. I've stated that I have a problem and that was a big step ahead. That wasn't enough, though. I've associated the problem with someone else, while the main reason was in me.

Therefore the step #2 was made when I've assumed the responsibility for the problems I was facing. I've decided that the main issue wasn't in my time-consuming job, my lack of creativity or the rain, pattering against the window of my apartment. I've tried to re-write the two statements in a way they'd bring a solution, and I came up with this:

a. I don't know how to stay motivated.

b. I don't know how to start feeling excited about the things I need to do.

3. You'll find the answer once the question was asked

As soon as I did that, all of the sudden, I felt like something changed in me.

It wasn't a "miracle" or a revelation, but suddenly I felt way more awake and motivated. The "I don't know" part sounded like something which can be solved. It means that there IS a solution, it's just I don't know about it yet. For example, we cannot change the day/night cycle, but we can learn how to keep our homes illuminated at any time of the day.

The next step, therefore, was to replace the passive statements with active questions:

a. How do I stay motivated?

b. How do I start feeling excited about the things I need to do?

4. Once the question was asked, let yourself find the answer

What I did helped me to realize that the problem wasn't in my environment or my personal traits. It was merely in my lack of knowledge. The solution was clear: "Alex, stop forcing yourself to do the things you don't want to do. Stop feeling down about your inability to do things the right way."

I didn't have a problem anymore. Instead, I had an action plan:

1. Go to the library and study related materials;

2. Contact the most productive people from my environment and ask them specific questions about the tools they use to stay motivated.

3. Go to bed early and do the writing tomorrow morning before work.

What about you? What methods do you use to turn your problems into action plans?

Beating Burnout: How to Overcome the Career Blues

Burnout is a common phenomenon in most industries, especially for highly dedicated and driven professional. If you've put all of your energy and time into a project or a job, it often can wear on you, especially if you don't see results right away. You may be tempted to quit, but don't give up just yet. There are many coping strategies that you can use when you are feeling burnt out that can help you get back on track.

Take a (short) break.

The best-known strategy for dealing with burnout is to just take a break. Although it is essential to take a break in order to recharge, many people don't approach the break with the right attitude and then end up experiencing burnout again. Your break should be short but very productive. Take a few days away from work and avoid using your phone or laptop for work purposes. Approach the break with the idea that you are going to do things that make you feel better, instead of just sleeping or watching TV. You might plan a weekend trip, go for a hike, meet up with close friends, or do something else positive that will make you feel better.

Remember what inspired you in the first place.

Everyone at one point likely had a moment when they realized this was the career for them. Go back to that moment and try to remember what sparked your curiosity about this profession. Did you read an article or watch a video that got you hooked? Whatever it was, thinking back on it can help you remember why you got started and push you to keep working towards your desired outcomes.

Determine the cause of the burnout.

In order to recover from burnout, you first need to identify what caused it. Some people experience burnout because they have taken on too much work and feel overwhelmed, while others feel burnt out because they feel dissatisfied with their work. Determine what the cause was for you and then identify concrete steps you can take to address it so it doesn't happen again.

Make a detailed plan.

Once you've taken a break and decide it's time to go back to work, create a very detailed plan for yourself that will help you manage your workload and take concrete steps to improve and feel satisfied with your work. This can help you avoid burnout again in the future, because if you start to feel like your career isn't going anywhere, you have a plan to turn to.

Although burnout can be incredibly frustrating, taking action to work through it can help you get your career back on track. Once you've worked through your first case of burnout, you will likely develop a new appreciation for your work that will help you stay motivated in the future.

There are several solid ways you can stay motivated and also inspire others. Have a look at the following scenarios.

· Your wife and child are both sick at home. You are extremely worried. But the moment you reach your office, you start to carry out your duties with such enthusiasm that you forget your family for the time being. At lunch break, you share your personal story and everyone is startled that in spite of that, you are able to work so spiritedly. One hour before the office closes, you give a round-up of your work and drop in a line that you have to leave the office early because of your personal problem. Nobody minds including your boss. You have worked hard and demonstrated it all. So you are well off; you are good to return home and look after your family.

· Your boss criticizes you badly in front of others. He points out the flaws in your work project and rebukes. There is pin drop silence all around. You just say humbly, "I will work it out. " Over the span of the next few days, instead of being gloomy, you take your boss's words as constructive criticism and work in all angles, heeding your boss's requirements all along. You not only made it but also were an inspiration to everyone.

· Your colleague has been criticized badly by your boss in front of others. He is feeling sulky and embarrassed. You uplift his confidence by pointing to him what options he has to rectify his mistakes. You present to him a few scenarios and tools as well to work with. Your colleague regains his composure and starts to work zealously on what you have just demonstrated.

These are a few ways that you can be a source of inspiration for others, standing out from the rest, setting yourself as a brilliant example for others.

How to Stay Motivated Throughout Your Hectic Schedule

It is not uncommon to find oneself in a situation, where staying motivated is just not possible. It is one of those things that seem so out of control and it happens at crucial moments, making it something we may (or may not) regret later. So the key question in such a situation would be, "How does one stay motivated?"

Before understanding the 'HOW', it is essential to understand the 'What' and 'Why'. What exactly is motivation? What does it mean to be motivated?

To answer the above question, I will give you two definitions, The first is by eminent author and Professor of Psychology, Jeffrey. S. Nevid. "The term motivation refers to factors that activate, direct, and sustain goal-directed behaviour. Motives are the "whys" of behaviour - the needs or wants that drive behaviour and explain what we do. We don't actually observe a motive; rather, we infer that one exists based on the behaviour we observe."

The second is by eminent nobody, Me. "Motivation is that driving force which leads us to do things and/or make decisions, which lead to subsequent achievement of our goals. It is the act of acting on our 'motives' or 'reasons for doing something'. It is primarily a change in behaviour."

From the above, we can infer two things clearly. The first is, Motivation is a change in behaviour and the second, to be motivated there must be a motive.

Now that we know what motivation involves, let us talk about another important question we must ask ourselves,

"Why do we lose motivation?"

If you've ever had a goal or a dream, you know that simply desiring it, is not enough. Irrespective of what your object of desire may be, it is easy to fall in love with it, but when it comes to obtaining it, that's no walk in the park. And this is where the motivation and your motives, come into the picture.

You see, when you started to desire, all you saw was your want for something and that thing itself. The psychological realization of all the obstacles that lie in your path, don't occur immediately. The reason it happens in that order is because we are ultimately (social) animals. We see, we want, we get. End of story.

But in life, that concept doesn't always apply. In life there are other concepts that come into play, like struggle, competition, hindrances and what not. All these things are blows to the mind. The mind, which naïvely thought that simply wanting something was enough, starts to realize that there are many other forces acting against it. It begins to see the 'price' it has to pay, to get to the objective. Slowly but steadily, the motives begin to lose their initial charm. Mind you, the desire is still very much there; but for some unexplainable reason, the drive seems to go missing. Suddenly, it is only the wanting part which remains. That's because ladies and gentlemen, motivation has left the building.

If you recall, it is pretty clear in the definition that motivation is simply two things, a change in behaviour and the existence of a motive. The moment one or even both these things cease, motivation ceases.

Finally, we can come to the last and most motivating part of this whole story,

"How does one stay motivated?"

The million dollar question. How does one, not lose sight of the goal and keep charging towards it without losing drive?

Fortunately, the answer is far less dramatic and far easier to understand and apply. Stated below are a few of the most tried and tested methods to stay motivated irrespective of what the situation might be.

1. Write down the goal

How many times have you started out something, with enough motivation to rule the world and less than a week later, you're asking yourself, "Why did I even start doing this in the first place?" And when you don't remember the reason, what do you do? You, quite obviously, quit.

We assume that if we don't remember, it is simply because the reason was not strong enough in the first place. That my friends, is the first step to becoming unsuccessful.

The moment you have a goal, clear out all the extra information in the background and then write down the core reason why you are doing or going to do it. Leave no room for ambiguity. Every time you see that piece of paper and read your goal, it must be clear and it must hit you in the right spot (heart)!

2. Divide and Conquer

Since time unknown, the world's greatest rulers have used this strategy and won battles. From Julius Caesar to the British Empire, everyone followed this strategy. Then why shouldn't we?

There is a famous adage, "Rome wasn't built in a day"

It emphasises the importance of giving things time. Rushing into something is easy, rushing out, not so much. You need to understand what all steps will be involved in achieving your goals and then divide those steps into smaller time periods.

For example, lets say you decide to lose 10 kgs. That isn't going to happen, with the regular exercise and diet method, in 1 day. In most scenarios, it won't happen in 1 month either. But if planned properly and divided into smaller achievable targets like, 1kg in 5 to 7 days, you have a pretty good chance of losing 10 kgs in 2 months or maybe even more.

So the idea is simple. Divide the steps to achieve the ultimate goal, into small periods. Then one by one, you can take down all the steps and conquer it!

3. Understand and accept all possible outcomes

In one word I mean be 'rational'.

More than often, we lose motivation because we don't understand that some things are not going to happen no matter what we do. There exists some loophole that may pull our goal out of our hands. But that does not mean we stop trying.

You want to be the first ranker in a competitive exam. Will you stop trying simply because there is a possibility, that someone somewhere has photographic memory and is also going to write the same exam? No, right?

In that spirit, you need to stay open to all the possibilities. You may come within inches of winning and lose Or you may have every chance of losing and still end up winning!

Why discount that?

4. Lose the pessimism

There's a saying, "A pessimist is someone who, when smells flowers begins looking for a grave!"

Nobody, I repeat, nobody can help someone who has decided in advance that they are going to lose. You can take the losing horse in a race and make him a winner; but a horse that refuses to run, has no future.

Pessimism is that one disease which can turn the most capable person into an absolutely worthless person. So there is really no room for motivation in a mind where pessimistic thoughts breed.

The moment you take an optimistic approach, motivation will follow.

5. Surround yourself with motivation

If you sit in a room full of sad, sobbing people, it is natural that you'll end up feeling depressed. It's plain logic, not rocket science.

Surround yourself with inspiring, motivated, happy, energetic go-getters and you will find it rubbing off on you! Because the human mind is a copycat. When the mind sees sad, it feels sad. When it sees happy, it feels happy.

Unless you are a sadist or a masochist, you will find yourself automatically feeling energised when in company of the energised.

Read books about being motivated and biographies of successful people. Listening to songs that have fast beats also help.

They make you feel like Muhammad Ali in the ring!

Ready to knock down the obstacles, one punch at a time.

6. Stop making excuses

Motivation is like that awesome friend; who when leaves the party, people begin to follow suit.

But you say, "No"

Nobody leaves after the party. Why?

Because you need the party to end, so that the After-Party can begin!!

You need to stop finding excuses to quit and start finding reasons to stay in the game. If you have 5 main motives to being with, add 5 motives that will act as the 'After-Party Motives'.

Have a simple rule. You snooze, you lose. If you want something, you have to go and get it. So pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get the after-party started!

I will end this with a simple analogy someone once drew for me when I was really demotivated.

They said, "When you begin something, it is like bringing home a baby. Initially it is always fun and so amazing! There is nothing like it. But slowly as the wailing and sleepless nights begin, you feel exhausted. In such a scenario, you have the permission to question your abilities. But you don't have the permission to quit."

From then onwards, every project I've taken up, I've treated it like my baby. There are moments when I feel like it just can't be done anymore. But I go back to the drawing board and ask myself, "Are you going to quit on your baby?"

And the answer has always been, "Not in a million years!"
