A Positive Attitude Is So Important

Our culture of criticism and cynicism in which we live seems to be very destructive to our self-esteem and self-confidence. But what is more, it can cause a lot of us to develop a negative view of ourselves.

The cynicism that we experience is everywhere around us in the political arenas that we inhabit, in our world of competitive marketing and even in our homes because of all the distractedness that we constantly feel as human beings.

Despite our negative culture however, we can cultivate a positive mindset. Here are a few concrete tips to help you out:

1. Trust yourself. Don't keep second-guessing what you are doing all the time. This can be hard to do initially. But you should trust that whatever you're doing is the best you can at this moment.

2. Enjoy every moment of your life. If it is to be enjoyed and cherished, you will be much more positive than if you don't enjoy your life. Your life can be so much fun! It can give you a chance to realms that you normally wouldn't if you allow yourself to be authentic.

3. Try to be as positive as possible when you wake up in the morning. If you are negative, take the time to silence these negative voices inside of you. When start your day, and during the day try to keep those negative statements. Set up a ritual to do so.

4. Know and plan what you will do each day ahead of time, preferably the day before. This will take the guess work out of what you should do and if you are having a bad day, you will be all ready to work.

5. Create a list of long and short-term life goals and follow-through on them as much as possible. We all need to have goals to measure that we are moving forward every day or just going through the same motions every day.

6. Keep that negative voice inside of you at bay as much as possible. If you catch yourself saying negative things, say STOP! You can say that out loud if you are in a private place or say it silently to yourself. Keep saying STOP until you stop saying negative things to yourself over and over.

7. Celebrate your accomplishments no matter how small. This will help you realize your abilities. I will say more about this below.

By taking these steps, you'll become much more positive and this will help you to feel better about yourself. Cultivate a positive mindset. This will remove self-doubt.

By removing self-doubt, you will not only be developing a positive mindset but self-confidence too. This will help you to become a happier and fulfilled person.

Why Someone's Opinion Of You Doesn't Determine Who You Are

Everyone Is Painting Their Own Masterpiece

What other people think of you needn't determine who you are because your sense of self shouldn't be affected by their opinion of you. From an impressionable age, we regard the opinions of others because we want to be accepted and fit in. But as we mature and develop self-esteem, it shouldn't matter what others think of us. Let me be clear by saying it is important for our peers to accept us, but we mustn't place our self-esteem in their hands. Acceptance of oneself helps to connect with our core-self and gives us feedback on who we are as individuals. But it needn't dictate our self-worth because who we are is far greater than the opinions of others.

What are your impressions? Do you agree, what others think of you doesn't determine your reality, unless you allow it? Regrettably, many people are influenced by the opinions of those closest to them, such as family, friends and work colleagues. Most notably, family has the greatest influence in our lives and may undermine our self-worth. I know people from diverse cultures where the parents play a significant role in deciding the career path of their children. Whilst their intentions are honourable, it is shameful to the family name if the child doesn't pursue a noble profession such as a doctor, a lawyer. Is this something you can relate to in your family or culture? If so, how did you deal with it and did it impact your self-worth?

Nowadays, everyone has an opinion on how others should live their life, but rarely do these people examine their own lives. In my work as a speaker and coach, I'm yet to come across someone who has all their affairs in order. I mean that in the best way, insofar as our life is a work in progress and we may never reach our full potential. It is why we mustn't judge others because everyone is painting their own masterpiece as best they can. During my early adulthood, I would worry about the opinions of others, which impacted my self-worth and self-confidence. Who they thought I should be was not something I could live up to, and it hurt me trying to be that person.

Eventually, these relationships dissolved because I wasn't willing to minimise my self-worth to appease them. I lived according to my core values, even if it meant making my own mistakes. It was important I find my way, instead of living up to someone's opinion of me. Regrettably, not many people know how you should live your life. They may claim to know what's best for you, but mostly it's an impression of what is good for you. We must walk our own path since that is how we learn and grow as individuals. And yes, it is difficult to see a loved one make unnecessary mistakes, but they might be necessary for their personal evolution.

We Discover Our True Potential In Our Darkest Moments

Our task is not to remove their difficulties but to empower them with support and encouragement to get through it. This can be hard, especially if the individual is addicted to alcohol or experimenting with drugs and we may not want to see them suffer this way. I'm not claiming to have the answers, but I know emotional support is the best way we help people work through their difficulties. How are you feeling about this so far? I'm sure you have lots of questions and opinions on what you've read so far. I encourage you to journal your thoughts and sit with them for a few days, to see what surfaces.

We mustn't allow other people's opinions of us to determine who we are because their opinion is not fact. Naturally, our life path will evolve as we mature, and we will experience many highs and lows where it might seem our life is spinning out of control. But this is part of the journey to discover our authentic self, buried amongst the ruins of failure, dead-ends and despair. It is part of becoming lost and experiencing desperation throughout of our circumstances. I know, because I've been there and know how uncomfortable it is to be an outsider in your own life. However, in the months that followed, I experienced an expansion of consciousness that led to breakthroughs in my life. I experienced new insights about my life during those moments of despair. Sometimes, pain and suffering will force us to evolve, so life can take us where it needs to.

We mustn't resist these moments but lean in to our problems with full conviction. We alone determine our sense of self. It may require going in one direction and hitting bottom ground, so we discover our true potential in those darkest moments. So, whether you are experiencing difficulties and challenges or guiding loved ones through their problems, note where they are leading you. Don't get caught up in the suffering because it is temporary and will eventually recede, as long as you continue in genuine faith. If we believe the opinions of others determine who we are, we are less likely to live an authentic life. Ultimately, the greatest tragedy is to follow in the footsteps of someone whose opinion of us matters little.

How to Achieve Success in Less Than 1 Year - Stop Self Sabotage (7 Tips)

As you have seen, self-sabotaging behavior can impact your ability to succeed. The negative self-talk and behavior easily forms a habit that keeps you stuck and unable to move beyond your comfort zone. Even so, there is hope. This article offers seven tip on how to stop self-sabotage - you can turn it around and achieve success in less than one year.

7 Tips

  • Investigate where the self-sabotage is coming from.

Is it from having low self-esteem or some type of anxiety? Are you needy or have unreasonable expectations? Does your self-sabotaging behavior come from a lack of assertiveness? You will need to be honest.

  • Watch your words.

When you catch yourself saying or doing something negative, turn it around. Keep repeating the positive talk. Develop a list of affirmations and post them nearby. Read them throughout the day.

  • Address your fears.

Use your fear to come up with a message that inspires you to face them. For example, say something like, "Even though I do not have the skills to complete the project on time, I know I can learn or find the resources I need to finish it.

  • Examine the behavior you want to change first.

Look at that behavior and notice what the story is that generates that behavior. Is the story true? If so, how can you let it go or change the behavior?

Self-sabotaging behavior often pops up from something we've previously experienced or been told. Learning to recognize when you are doing it and what is causing you to do is the first step to changing it.

  • Do not wait until things are perfect.

We often want to be 100% certain of an answer before we speak or put an idea into practice. Strive for excellence but put it out there anyway.

  • Get out of your comfort zone.

Take a few steps every day away from what feels comfortable. Learn a new skill. Build your confidence by learning a new skill. Just the act of trying to achieve the new skill will boost your confidence and get you out of your comfort zone.

  • Shift your belief by visualizing a positive outcome.

Start slowly and make small changes. Do not try to sprint ahead and make drastic changes. Changing your self-sabotaging behavior will take time, work, and consistent effort. But the end results can be amazing. You will be able to go for your dream and express yourself in a positive way.

Break Free From Shyness - Live the Life You Deserve (By Fiona Gray)

Did you ever see the film East is East? It is a British Comedy-drama about the Khan family, set in Salford in 1971. The character that stood out for me was the youngest brother Sajid. Sajid is the shy brother who always wore a green Parka Coat. I too use to use hide inside a large thick multi-coloured coat with the green hood pulled up in all weathers. My sister's friends use to laugh at me, they could always see the hood just above the hedges, as I walked past their house to the shops.

So what was going on for me? I was incredibly shy, extremely self-conscious thinking everyone was looking at me, I had zero self-esteem and what I now realise was a certain level of social anxiety. That coat was my protection from what I perceived to be a hostile and dangerous world. What I didn't realise then, is that I was not alone. The royal college of psychiatrist's states 2% of men and 3% of women suffer from shyness. Others say the statistics are higher at 7% to 15% of people but this includes those at the milder end of the spectrum. To me, that is still a lot of people.

Society in general doesn't have a problem with shy people. Often, they find shy children cute. Shy people are generally not perceived as a threat and many find the quality attractive because it brings out the nurturing side in us, such as the "strong silent type". Unfortunately for the shy person the "silence" is our way of containing a range of intense feelings such as fear, anger, embarrassment, shame, anxiety, insecurity, self-hate and other vulnerabilities.

These feelings can lead us to withdraw from taking part in life, such as refusing to attend school, not applying for a job because we can't face the interview, never asking someone we find attractive out on a date, not pursuing the career of our dreams, because we take rejection so personally. It is no longer "cute" when we see the young child finding it emotionally painful to make friends at school. There are middle-aged adults that have never left home because they have been too shy and socially anxious to go out and connect with the world.

It is not easy to spot a shy adult because we have become the masters of disguise, or so we think. I built up such a good wall of defence that some people mistook my shyness for "aloofness" or "quietly confident". When I'm feeling particularly vulnerable I can come across outwardly as angry, when inside I just want to run away. Now we all have a socially acceptable device called the mobile phone, allowing us to hide away in public.

How to break free from shyness and live a fulfilling life? First, find out what you really love to do or what you are good at. For some people, sports could be the way to go. You might have to shop around to find the sport that suits you, it could be a team sport or simply running. What works for one person might not work for another so keep on trying. Your thing might be poetry or singing anything that gets your interest. For me it was Dance, I had a great teacher at school that could see that I really enjoyed the lessons and she told me about the Manchester Youth Dance Theatre, the freedom I felt while dancing changed my life.

I am still shy in some situations, it doesn't necessarily leave you completely. Part of breaking free is accepting your shyness without allowing it to hold you back from the things you really want to do.

Once I found my passion I was able to figuratively pull down the hood of my coat, I realised the world was not as scary as I thought. Gradually I was able to take the coat off completely and walked confidently into my future.

We All Encounter Setbacks In Life, Yet We Mustn't Allow Ourselves To Ever Be Defeated

We Mustn't Give Up Hope Of A Better Future

If you let your defeats conquer you, they will penetrate your psyche and erode your character. Setbacks are unavoidable in this journey called life and none of us are immune to them. If you are reading this now, you no doubt live in the Western world and have access to technology which makes you more privileged than millions of others living in poverty. I mention this because life in the Western world comes with its privileges and its downsides.

Defeat is sewn into the fabric of our existence and it accompanies us our entire life whether it be our: health, relationships, career or financial. Every one of us has a story where defeat gained a foothold into our minds. Some people recoil from the pain while others rise to the challenge and overcome their barriers to defeat. Can you identify with this narrative? Have there been moments in your life when you experienced setbacks and thought you wouldn't bounce back, yet you did? We are all tested in some form or another, some more than others and whilst it may not be fair, this doesn't mean life is unjust. Those who overcome defeat learn quickly that to judge life based on fairness does not award them any more power than the next person.

Unfortunate things happen to good people and one need only turn on the news to see the situation in Greece with the fires and the earthquake in Indonesia where the death toll continues to rise into the hundreds. Challenges are everywhere, but we mustn't give up hope of a better future. We mustn't believe we are powerless in the face of our defeats. Sometimes it may feel life imposes itself upon us in a cruel and unjust way. We may want to retreat until we feel ready to emerge again. This isn't necessarily a bad plan though we mustn't stay down or else our self-esteem and character will be compromised if we don't confront our challenges.

Make The Best Of Our Hardships

When speaking in front of audiences or coaching clients, I often ask people to think back to a time in their life that shaped their character. Similarly, I invite you to reflect on moments when you experienced hardship or defeat yet overcame it? What lessons did you learn and what skills or qualities did you develop? People often say they didn't think they had the inner strength and the resiliency to overcome their setbacks and this reaffirms why we must face our challenges with an open mind and a soft heart. We can't allow life to extinguish our inner light because once it goes out it will be difficult to rekindle the promise of hope, faith and enthusiasm.

I can't explain why unpleasant things happen to us, nor would I want the burden of trying to figure it out. I've come to the realisation it is a waste of time and energy trying to understand why unfortunate things happen. If I look for the meaning in life's events, I become mired in the problem and move further away from a solution. However, if I accept it and rise again to shake the fragments of defeat off my shoulder, I realise life isn't a tale about being knocked down, but it's about how many times we rise that makes the difference. Similarly, it's of little use to justify life being fair or unfair since this is not beneficial and relieves us of our power to respond affirmatively. If we can summon our inner power and make the best of our hardships, we can sail into smoother waters knowing there will be times when the sea of life will be rough, yet when the storm passes it will be smooth sailing once again. It is what the acclaimed Brazilian author of The Alchemist Paulo Coelho refers to in a recent tweet when he said: "The more violent the storm, the quicker it passes."

I'd like for you to walk away after reading this article and get a sense that setbacks are part of the human condition, though we mustn't be defeated by them. If we do, we risk losing ourselves to what the late holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl reiterated through his writing and teachings; our ability to choose our attitude. Frankl's passage from Man's Search for Meaning underscores that our attitude is the last remaining hope after everything is taken away from us, as was the case when he lost his family in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany: "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms-to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." You are not the product of your defeats because they are teaching points from which to cultivate your greatest strength, should you rise above them. For in overcoming our impediments, we discover the depth of our character and an abiding spirit of resiliency that follows us throughout life ever more.

Don't Go Through Life Quitting. Anything Substantial Requires Seeing It Through To The End

Life Doesn't Have A Timeline For Us

Quitting is easy though we rarely achieve anything when we abandon our goals. Knowing that, take a moment to reflect on something you're contemplating giving up on right now. It may be career related, health or otherwise. Why do you want to give up? Is it the only way? Have you considered other options? Once you've had a moment to reflect on it, think about why you undertook the goal in the first place. It might be that having a passion or purpose makes it harder to quit because of the emotional investment required to achieve it. Sometimes, we undertake goals we don't resonate with but fill a void in our life. Pursuing a goal or a dream ought to provide us with a sense of value and meaning in our lives, otherwise we're less likely to see it through. Does this make sense, insofar as being committed to the goal instead of wishing for something better to come along?

To go through life quitting weakens our character and erodes our self-esteem since we become habituated to taking the easy way out. As you know, life is not meant to be a bed of roses, nor is it riddled with pain and suffering. When we make choices aligned with our core values and highest intent, we are likely to pursue actions aligned with them. Sometimes, chasing after a goal or dream means toiling away in the trenches, for months, if not years with no respite. Occasionally, it requires walking away from situations that no longer serve us or our core purpose. This is difficult because there are no assurances we're making the right choice. The one measure we have is whether it feels right. Our emotions become our barometer if we're in it for the right reasons.

To achieve anything substantial requires hard work, determination and a resolute will to overcome the obstacles and challenges that lay ahead. It requires facing our demons and wrestling with them repeatedly. It involves revisiting the past and dredging up baggage we thought we once healed. I don't believe life has a timeline for us because sometimes we must gain knowledge, wisdom and understanding which cannot be rushed. Just as a flower blooms at the right time, so do the fruits of our labour when the conditions are right. To quit means to throw away the time and energy invested pursuing a goal. What I'm saying is: We mustn't allow difficult moments to define whether we will achieve our goals and dreams. This is the advice echoed by the American psychologist and author Angela Duckworth who writes in her bestselling book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance: "Many of us, it seems, quit what we start far too early and far too often. Even more than the effort a gritty person puts in on a single day, what matters is that they wake up the next day, and the next, ready to get on that treadmill and keep going."

Nothing Substantial Comes Easily

Invariably, we will face difficult moments and make tough decisions anyway, so we might as well be doing it pursuing our passions and aspirations. How does this idea appeal to you? Can you see how sticking with something long term can be a great benefit to you? It's worth rendering a caveat here that sometimes we ought to quit when things are not working out. I don't intend the advice in this article to mean you mustn't ever give up. The message is simple: if you are passionate about something and you want it, find a way to get it and let go of why you can't have it.

In this wicked world of illusion, sometimes miracles can happen overnight. Life works in mysterious ways and when least expected. Circumstances can fall into place only if we labour and toil away at our respective goal. Nothing substantial comes easily and if it does, it is likely to slip from our hands just as quickly. For example, if you're in a relationship that has run its course, your only option may be to walk away from it, but what about investing the time and energy to work it out? Might it be in your best interest to keep trying before you quit? I don't have the answers and neither will you until you embark on the hard work which can be tiresome and plain ugly. The hard work is not cut out for everyone and this is why many people quit ahead of time. Decide on what you want for your life and create the structure and foundation for it to rest on. Do everything in your power to complete the task, the goal or dream and then if you want to give up, at least you will have a compelling reason to do so.

What to Do When Overwhelmed by Your Reality?

At times, life feels like an overwhelming affair. There's too much to do, too much to think, too much to worry about. What can we do to fight that feeling?

Sometimes life seems to be too much to bear. Some people feel overwhelmed by the constant rush and the many things to do. Others just can't stand the incessant murmur of their never-ending thoughts. Some, still, can't cope with their feelings of inadequacy or insecurity. They all try different solutions, among which maybe meditation or mindfulness could be tested, but that is often just not enough to counteract the feeling.

Let us go over some of the causes of such feelings, first, to then study some possible tools and solutions.

  • Too many things to do: most of us have grown up in societies in which competition and success are paramount and the true measure of our value. As a consequence, we feel obliged to constantly aim at greater, higher goals. Being good is never enough, as excellence and supremacy are the only acceptable levels. This type of belief, inherited from our environment, pushes us to constantly seek more, do more, expect more of ourselves. There's a whole world to impress in front of us and that demands that we devote most of our time to doing things that will get us closer to our goal and that any free time we happen to find, we also use pursuing our constant improvement.
  • Too many thoughts: rumination starts in most human beings as a form of daydreaming. Already in childhood, some people devote quite a lot of their time to letting themselves get lost in their thoughts while disconnecting from reality. What soon becomes a habit is almost invariably paired with negative projections of that future, as we learn to worry about what may be or what may happen. Very few people ruminate about positive, happy things; most do about negative, worrisome or painful ones. Constant thinking about negative aspects quickly becomes a way of life and those who embark on it find it difficult to change the pattern. Any form of rumination, be it focused on the past or the future, yields certain chemicals and sensations that our brain soon becomes addicted to. Not having them can cause withdrawal-like symptoms and result in a permanent need to recreate them. Thus, the rumination continues, grows and becomes never-ending.
  • Living in the past: when human beings ruminate, they usually do so focused on two different scenarios, and only those two: the past or the future. When in the past, they are trying to make sense of something that happened that still makes them feel guilty, sad or hurt. Not being able to change whatever happened then often overwhelms them and makes them feel powerless.
  • Living in the future: when in the future, people are trying to ready themselves to face something that scares them, constantly asking themselves, 'what if... ?' The more time they spend in those scenarios, the more often they need to return. People who spend so long in the future in their minds become overwhelmed by the wide range of possible difficulties and hurdles they may encounter and by the growing belief in their failure to succeed.
  • Feeling inadequate or insecure: many people suffer from low self-esteem or insecurities which are the result of weak beliefs and convictions. When a person holds strong beliefs, there is no insecurity. It comes from uncertainty and doubt. Those who feel like they're not good enough or insufficient, tend to find it hard to cope with their circumstances and the reality around them, not because it is posing them too many challenges but because they think they are not capable or strong enough. Everything becomes complicated and one problem piles on top of the next until people feel completely overwhelmed.
So, what can be done?
  • First of all, take a deep breath. Nothing will change if you can't stop for a second and focus on the task at hand. The more unfocused you are, the harder it will get. This applies to all the possible causes mentioned above: the more you worry, the more anxious you get and the less energy you then have to really face up to your problems. By the time you need to overcome them, you are exhausted.
  • Second, focus on the HERE and the NOW. The more time you spend either in the past or in the future...

  1. the less time you have to focus on the problem at hand;
  2. the less energy you have when you finally decide to tackle the situation in front of you;
  3. the less aware you are of the real circumstances around you and the less resources you are then able to perceive and find; and
  4. the less you learn for future, similar situations.

In order to be in the here and the now, you need to make the conscious effort to do so. You need to fight the habit that drives you away into the past or the future. A good tool to use is any form of mindfulness:

  1. focusing on one object around you and assessing it using your 5 senses: smell, touch, taste, hearing and sight;
  2. focusing on feeling your ten toes without actually moving them;
  3. engaging on any type of activity by totally submerging yourself in it through your 5 senses.

Another important tool to be used is drastically stopping whatever you are doing and doing just the opposite or something completely different. For instance, if you're sitting and you suddenly realize you're ruminating or getting carried away into your mind, stand up and start moving. Or, if you're walking, just sit down anywhere or start dancing. Changing our actions forces us to be in the here and the now.

Third, use the Kaizen technique. We often feel overwhelmed, as was already discussed above, when there's too much on our plate. We have important goals to reach and those feel unreachable. Kaizen implies reducing our goals to more manageable steps and taking those steps, one by one. So, if you for instance, need to exercise because the doctor told you to, running or cycling for one hour everyday might sound like an impossible task. Applying this Japanese technique, you would start by only doing it for 5 minutes the first day and celebrating achieving that little milestone. The second day you would do it for just 10 minutes, then celebrate it, and so on until reaching the desired 60 minutes. Celebrating the small steps is a fundamental part of the process because it helps us change our beliefs and boosts our self-esteem.

Fourth, identify and question the beliefs that make you doubt yourself. In order to do this, I usually recommend using a "self-talk diary," a notebook (or recording system) in which to note down any negative or critical self-talk we catch ourselves using. All those messages to ourselves hide our deepest beliefs. An example would be you telling yourself... 'I will never get the promotion because nobody likes me,' which is another way of telling yourself that you're not likeable or worthy. Identify all the labels you give yourself in order to understand why your self-esteem is so low. Those are the messages you keep on telling yourself. Are you surprised you feel insecure? Do this for at least a couple of weeks.

Once you identify your beliefs (through those labels and messages), ask yourself wether they empower you or limit you and if you wish to keep them. If you decide to let them go, you will need to find a replacement, as no belief can be simply erased. In order to find a replacement, look for a message that cancels the previous one and start repeating it to yourself. There is one important rule here: the new message can not be the opposite of the previous one, because your brain will just not believe it. It needs to be one that partially cancels it, opening a new avenue for you. Using the same example as before, you might have been telling yourself that you're not likeable. Your new message could be something like, "some people like me," or "I sometimes like myself," or even, "there's a lot in me to be liked." Once you repeat it often enough, you might start feeling it come true. At that moment, celebrate the feeling. The more you do this, the easier it will be for you to start accepting the new belief and replacing the old one. Warning: question and change only one belief at a time and don't start on a second one until having worked on the first one for at least two weeks. Questioning too many beliefs simultaneously can lead to crises.

Fifth, use tool number 4 to also question yourself about your beliefs regarding competition and success. What do you believe about them? What are your expectations? What messages do you give yourself? Do they empower or limit you? Do you want to keep them?

Bullying Made Me Believe I Was Ugly (By May Esohe Olusola)

BULLYING PLANTED SEEDS OF SHYNESS

I found this throwback picture of me taken in 1987. I was 20 years old, painfully shy, void of confidence; but most importantly, a product of mental bullying that took root in my life and molded me into believing what I definitely wasn't. As ridiculous as this sounds, I used to believe I was very ugly and here is why.

I was born with a pronounced red birthmark on the left side of my face. Back then, it was the first thing you saw if you were meeting me for the first time. I was very conscious of it and used to feel like I was from another planet, because no one seemed to have a face like mine. The kids in school didn't help matters with their constant showers of horrible names to hurt my self-esteem, like: "Red-faced Monster," "Ugly Girl," "Map of the World," and "Your-Mother-Must-Have-Slapped-You-With-a-Red-Spoon.".

These taunts laid the foundation for many pity parties. "Why me?" was the question I used to put before God, and whenever my mother came home from work and saw I'd been crying, she would try her best to convince me I was beautiful. Her words had a way of gently draining away the malicious words I had suffered. Thank God for a mother who kept speaking life into me with statements like: "You are beautiful," "You are going to be great," and "You are somebody." This became a cycle, till I slowly started believing there might be some truth in my doting mother's words. I gained a tiny bit of confidence and was at the point of figuring out a permanent way to dismiss the bullying.

AN ADULT UNKNOWINGLY JOINED THE BULLYING CYCLE

I was almost there when one day my teacher wanted to get my attention. However, instead of calling me by name, she called out: "Come here, Red Face." You can't imagine the shock that bolted from head to toe. She had betrayed my innocent mind to such an extent that I am fighting back tears as I write this. For an adult to confirm what the kids were daily saying proved to me that I was indeed a red-faced monster. Her words had added salt to a wound that caused unimaginable heartache for years.

Thank God for special friends back then. They celebrated and encouraged me in very memorable ways. By the time I graduated from the university, it was not as bad, but still bad. I just did not find myself worthy. This belief followed me into adulthood, creating some painful chapters that robbed me of many opportunities. In no time, my self-esteem graduated from low to invisible.

My turning point came the moment the word of God took root in me and I resolved to reject the fear of rejection and believe in myself no matter what. The light bulb of revelation had finally come on. I made a conscientious effort to start the change from within me. In no time, the layers and excess baggage that weighed me down for many years started falling off one day at a time.

A BETTER PERSON EMERGED FROM THE DUNGEON OF BULLYING

Today, I can look in the mirror and say to myself,"Thank You Lord; I am beautiful!" I truly appreciate the way God made me. I love myself, I do what makes me happy and permit what enters my space. (If you don't guard your space, shenanigans will guard it for you.) If God wasn't on my side, who knows the other options I would have sought to medicate the pain bullying birthed in me? No matter what you are going through, the first step to recovery is believing in yourself. Forget what the world says about you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made.

It is imperative we form and maintain the habit of using words wisely. What we say to others matters a great deal. We can make or break ourselves and others with our choice of words. Let us be a part of putting an end to all forms of bullying today.

Is Humility Strength And Evidence Of High Self Esteem? (By Lance Winslow)

Some would say that an achieved humble man has high self-esteem as he doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. Yes, I can see that point, although that's not the end of the story and it is hardly the beginning either. Not long ago, I was discussing all this with a fellow think tank type mind and they noted an old famous quote:

"Humility is not thinking less of oneself, but thinking of oneself less. Humility is strength not indecision."

Sure, on the surface that does sound like a well-spoken piece of wisdom, but on second thought; is it so? You see, I humbly disagree. How is humility strength? It can be deceptive, hiding one's abilities, I guess deception can be viewed as holding back knowledge and knowledge is power, therefore considered strength - of course, I quite certain that the maker of that quote wasn't thinking about it in that way.

Kids are definitely not humble, they are very self-centered, it's always I, I, I and it is always about them or they cry. Why? Simple, it is natural for them to be that way. We say they need to grow up if they live their life in the first person, by growing up we mean taught or learn to appropriate behavior. Humility is taught, it is learned, it is not natural, it is nurture, and that's fine, but it is our (societies') enforcement upon the individual.

There is nothing wrong with Ego, or I, nothing at all, it's natural and normal and actually first-person thinking, there is nothing wrong with Ayn Rand's Objectivism either. We often attach more character to the humble one, but why? You may not like John Mac Enroe or his behavior on the tennis court, but you also can't touch his skills with a ten-foot pole either. Who is right, it's his life, and people are free to act as they will, in the US we have free speech, which also means tooting one's own horn in self-promotion.

You may not like Donald Trump or Richard Branson for their brashness and perceived megalomaniac style behavior, but since you are not a billionaire who are you to judge? Those who are humble and great may make us feel better about ourselves, and the powers-that-be less threatened, but that doesn't make it a virtue, it is not.

We are told not to judge another man until we walk a mile in their shoes, but apparently it's okay to judge someone who is less humble - why? Simple, it is society's way of reinforcing a specific learned behavior - why? To make us all feel better about ourselves. However, if we were more comfortable in our own skin, we wouldn't be bothered by less-than-humble folks in the first place. Dare to debate?

Are You Being Bullied (By Gary Wonning)

According to the present day definition, I tend to believe everyone on the planet has been bullied at some point in their life.

It happened to me when I was a little bitty squirt.

In today's world, some think that if another disagrees with you it's bullying, or if they try to get you to actually do your job.

Kids as well as adults can be pretty mean and uncaring at times. That is just a part of life.

Like it or not, we are all human beings and being such we are part of the animal kingdom, and all animals have a pecking order, it has always been this way and will always be this way.

Nothing is going to change that. There are times as a final act, after all forms of diplomacy is tried that physical acts are necessary. Bullies are cowards, Most often if one stands up to them, they will back off and go pick on someone else.

If you are being bullied with just words, it's no big deal.

It's just a matter of having enough self esteem and confidence in yourself to know that what they are saying isn't true. When you have that self confidence, the words will bounce off you like water off a duck's back and mean nothing.

Maybe the reason someone is picking on you is so you will finally "get it" and realize you are not what they say you are, and you are above that kind of thing and you finally begin to stand up for yourself.

Many times the one being "bullied" likes the drama and popularity that comes with it, being a victim has become very popular these days, it can draw a lot of attention to someone, and it also shifts the blame for your short comings to someone else, it is their fault.

In this day and age, anyone can succeed if they have the desire and ability, it isn't based on race, gender, creed or national origin, to think differently is just placing blame for your actions on someone else.

Once you build some self confidence and rise above that, the bullying will stop.

In the journey of life, people can and will help you, but in the end, it is your responsibility to solve your own problems, no one can do that for you.

As long as you belief you are a victim, life will treat you like a victim.

You are in control of your life, it is your decision to lead it as you desire, and not succumb to negative forces around you.

It's all about you, not them.

There are billions of people in this world, you don't need those kind in your life. Learn the lessons they are teaching you, and move on.

I have traversed the globe in search of truth, my truth, during which time I have had an opportunity to study with Aborigine elders, native American Indians, and some of the world's finest intuitives. All of this has lead me to better understand our world and all things therein contained.

6 Powerful Ways to Enhance Your Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem arises when we're most vulnerable. Verbal cues are learned at a tender age and last well into a person's adult life.

During these formative years, the child's mind is impressionable. If subjected to emotional abuse, they're likely to assume this role as their main identity.

Life is challenging and being exposed to criticism makes it unbearable, especially when one is in a state of anguish.

We're unaware of what's lurking beneath the surface of another person until it's too late. We're only exposed to their facade, so it makes sense we treat everyone with humility and respect.

According to Freud, The Iceberg Personality Principle states that 90% of a person's constitution lies beneath the surface. Therefore, what takes place behind the scenes of others is beyond our awareness.

"Self-esteem is a concept developed by American psychologists to measure self-worthiness. Thus, we can conceive worthiness as the temperature and self-esteem as the thermometer," states author Mario Martinez in, The MindBody Code: How to Change the Beliefs that Limit Your Health, Longevity, and Success.

The following principles should strengthen your self-esteem. We must embody them at a deeper level, past the conscious mind for it to be of any use.

As you carry them out, your wholeness will emerge beneath the rubble of a fragmented past. This is the essence of who you are and your low self-worth is merely a story you adopted against your better judgment.

You are not defined by your thoughts, your beliefs or values. These are qualities you possess and are changeable with time.

1. Self-Acceptance

Self-acceptance means to embrace who you are, replete with your flaws and insecurities. There are two sides to your nature, so you cannot be imperfect. To draw attention to your inadequacies awards them energy and plays down other significant aspects of your character. Think of it akin to pain in the body. When you have a headache, your awareness is directed to the pain in your head. You are less aware of other body areas because of the intense pressure that commands your attention. Similarly, to focus on your imperfections is to draw awareness to those areas while downplaying other enduring qualities. Despite low self-esteem, there's equal balance in your ability to empathise with others. Harmony is upheld through other traits, but when we focus on the lesser ones, we weaken others.

2. Reinforce Your Self-Belief

Self-belief is a muscle that requires constant reinforcement. Those with an empowered self-worth attribute it to a strong self-belief. They're aware of destructive thought patterns and on the occasion negative self-talk emerges, they avoid engaging with them.

Look for evidence in the past where you've excelled. Develop an inner dialogue of kindness and empathy. You've heard the expression, become your best friend. Treat yourself as you would a family member or a loved one. Current research in self-compassion shows we're more likely to be happy and fulfilled if we nurture ourselves, instead of treating ourselves unkindly.

"You can learn to trust that there is a sane, wise, and nurturant resource within you. In fact, the more you know what you really want, the less desperately you need it. This happens because your self-esteem, confidence, and clarity grow," affirms psychotherapist David Richo in, The Five Things We Cannot Change: And the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them.

3. Focus On The Present

Move your attention out of the past and refuse to focus on prior failures and mistakes. When you're stuck in the past, you bring unhappy memories into the present moment. Come back to your present experience by staying engaged in your current surroundings. The past is a figment of your imagination because there's no evidence to suggest it exists now. If I asked you to show me your memories, you would be hard-pressed to do so. Instruct your mind to stay present when it stumbles into the past. Take regular walks in nature and observe your surroundings. Note the colour of the trees, the grass or something that grabs your attention. It might be momentary, yet it engages you in a present state of awareness.

4. Undertake Self-Improvement

Self-improvement helps you reframe failure by seeing it through the eyes of opportunity. You realise there are no mistakes, only ways to evolve. Together with mindfulness, self-improvement is a means for you to mature into a greater version of yourself. We're constantly evolving, so who you were a year ago is not the same person you are today. Your thoughts, attitudes and beliefs change, so you need to renew your commitment to self-development every day. Consider it taking care of your mind as you would your body. It requires work and discipline to become a person of character, so don't take short-cuts or assume it's not important. I assure you, if you don't invest in yourself, you'll see the consequences when life falls apart.

5. Develop Mindfulness

Be aware of your predominant thoughts by noting their themes and cycles. For example, are they self-sabotaging, negative or neutral? Reframe such thoughts as they arise and refuse to accept them as real. Thoughts are meaningless conversations that take place in the mind. You needn't pay attention to the incessant chatter because the cycle of thoughts come and go. To identify with thought forms is futile because your mind is an ever-changing oasis. Focus on the silent gaps in between your thoughts through meditation. As you become acquainted with this practice, you synchronise your thoughts with your breathing. This allows the mind and body to harmonise with one another, creating a peaceful physical state.

6. Create Empowering Beliefs

Examine any outdated beliefs and be willing to write a new script to enhance your self-esteem. Beliefs are formed long ago and may no longer be relevant, so revise them often.

Empowered individuals constantly review their beliefs and challenge their thoughts. They refuse to be drawn in to the inner dialogue taking place in their mind since they recognise it's a battle they seldom win.

The process of enhancing self-esteem can be a slow, yet fulfilling journey. It may take years to become a person of strong character, so don't be dissuaded by that. An aeroplane can go no faster to arrive at its destination. Wishing for more self-esteem without doing the work, will not draw you closer to the person you wish to become.

Be kind and gentle with yourself as you increase your self-esteem. Observe and make incremental changes when things don't go as planned. This is a learning and discovery process as it is about self-development.

Author Guy Winch states in Emotional First Aid: Practical Strategies for Treating Failure, Rejection, Guilt, and Other Everyday Psychological Injuries, "Failure has an even greater impact on our self-esteem. Many of us respond to failures by drawing damaging conclusions about our character and abilities that seem incredibly compelling to us at the time even when they have no merit whatsoever."

Instead of judging yourself, pay attention to what is taking place in your life. Avoid labelling thoughts since this has a negative effect on self-esteem.

View yourself through the eyes of equanimity and self-compassion, instead of criticism and guilt.

Afterall, you're learning to develop a new inner dialogue that may have taken years to build, so be gentle with the process. The changes are subtle at first, but more concrete over time.

How to Build and Exhume Confidence in Yourself

Do you count yourself as being one of those unfortunate creatures of God who are just not worthy of being loved, praised or appreciated? If yes, then chances are high that you also must be very insecure as a person, although you must be doing a pretty good job of concealing it. What you must realize at this point is that try as you might to hide your true feelings they find a way to manifest themselves in form of low self-esteem.

How you feel about yourself and judge your worth is described as self-esteem. To this effect, individuals who feel regard themselves poorly or inferior to others are the ones who suffer from low self-esteem. Having a low self-esteem is not about being quirky but about acknowledging that there is indeed a real problem at hand that needs to be solved before it sabotages all other aspects of life, most important among them being happiness.

Typical Symptoms of Low Self-Esteem

Following are some behavior traits that are characteristic of people suffering from low self-esteem -

Extremely sensitive to criticism - Unlike most people who take criticism in stride, a person with low self-esteem is unduly sensitive to criticism. Psychologists attribute this to the uncertain mindset that is characteristic of such a person wherein he/she tends to closely observe other people's reactions and often arrives at a negative conclusion.

In the event of you being a person with low self-esteem, most of the times you would feel that others are justified in treating you badly.

Socially isolated - Individuals with low self-esteem tend to remain socially isolated, whether it is in form of staying away from a room-mate or spending time on phone despite being a part of a big gathering. Even if someone does try to approach such a person and strike a conversation, the attempt is futile since all that takes place is passing of insecurities in a bid to feel superior.

Attributing everything to luck - A typical characteristic of low self-esteem is to shrug off hard-earned success and attribute it to a blessing or simply sheer luck. The sign of a healthy self-esteem is to embrace success and return the compliment with a simple 'thank you'. On the flip side, one that is indicative of low self-esteem echoes the sentiment that whatever good happened was either due to someone else or could have been much better.

Appeasement policy - Backing out of an argument willingly or saying sorry to people irrespective of whether they deserve it or not is reflective of poor self-esteem. This is because a person having low self-esteem is scared to express his/her true feelings or opinions for the fear of being laughed at or rejected. Appeasement seems to be the best option to avoid a conflict or an argument.

Fatigue and insomnia - Feeling fatigued or spending too much time in bed without falling asleep reflect on an escapist mentality which in turn stems from low self-esteem. Slouching shoulders are also indicative of the fact that you do not consider yourself worthy enough.

Dealing with Low Self-Esteem

There are several factors that contribute towards a low self-esteem ranging from negligent or uninvolved parents to having a critical peer group, physical or mental trauma, negative thought patterns and unrealistic expectations. That said, it is equally important to bear in mind that self-esteem can be dealt with, meaning it is something that can be changed since it is after all a state of mind.

Raising self-esteem may take plenty of time and practice but as long as you are determined enough to challenge your own mindset and push it towards change, there is nothing that can stop you. Practicing self-esteem exercises and attending self-esteem workshops are some recommendations that could speed up the process but ultimately the choice is yours to make. And when you choose to change your thinking, not only do you gain a healthy self-esteem but also a world of positivism.

Learn From Your Successes to Build Self-Esteem

Self-awareness is the foundation of success in life. Learning from successes can boost your self-esteem and self-awareness because you can learn more about yourself and your strengths. Too often we get lost in the hyper-speed of today's society and the challenges that confront us at work and home to really remember that we have had successes in the past.

Everyone excels in at least one area (generally more than one area). When you understand self-awareness, this can help you to learn where your best skills lie and to do more activities that enable you to leverage these advanced skills more often.

Whenever you do something well, you feel a sense of accomplishment. Pride, and confidence surge in you because you could achieve something that ideally helped yourself and others. In many cases, you were the best person for the task and were more easily able to achieve it than other people would have. Therefore, other people will look up to you because you were able to complete the task and/or achieve the feat so quickly and easily as compared to others.

When you are having a difficult time or struggling with challenges, it is important to look back upon your successes and realize that you have the capability of doing great things and succeeding at whatever you are doing. Sometimes, life "throws us a curveball" that makes us uncomfortable and causes us to struggle a bit with tasks that we are not used to completing and have a hard time completing at a high level.

The key is that we must remember that especially during these difficult times, we have the capability to adapt and succeed. Build a library of those times when you've had successes, especially those tasks that others struggled and they called upon you to do them.

You can do this via journaling or some other method of documenting the successes because our memories can falter or be distorted after a period. Pay attention to the details so when the time comes you can assign credit where it is due. In my opinion, every success I have will be associated with another person or group who helped in the execution. This helps you build them up also.

Whether it was an issue with a computer or electronic device, an item at home that needed repairing, or just offering helpful advice to someone dealing with a situation you dealt with before, you could succeed where others couldn't or would have a harder time succeeding.

Reflecting on your past successes and realizing you have the capability to adapt and do many tasks well, you will realize that whatever present challenge you're facing can be overcome as well.

Reflecting and celebrating past successes is a great foundation for expanding your self-awareness and self-esteem but don't fall into the trap of spending your time focusing on the past. It is meant to be an inspiration not a crutch.

To be more successful, just focus on the task at hand, utilize the lessons you've learned from having past successes, and put the skills and effort in to overcome the present challenge.

By taking time to reflect and learn from your past successes, you can keep your self-esteem intact during times of great difficulty and be able to overcome virtually any challenge that comes your way.

Be mindful and intentional in all that you do today and tomorrow will be rich and rewarding.

High Self Esteem Tips and the Most Important Ways to Improve Them

Introduction

Self-esteem definition

The esteem word comes from a Latin word which means "estimate." This means that self-esteem is how one estimates or regards themselves.

Self-esteem can be caused by both internal and external factors.

Self-esteem could also be defined as the reflection of one's overall subjective emotional evaluation of their worth. It's basically the judgment of oneself as well as attitude towards yourself.

High self-esteem

High/ Healthy self-esteem is basically feeling positive about yourself and valuing yourself correctly.

This can be increased by external factors such as parents, teachers, and coaches among others.

This is people who give a positive feedback even in hard situations which could have been considered as a failure.

Pillars of increasing self-esteem.

Self-esteem can be increased through positivity. The following are the main pillars of feeling good about yourself.

1. Personal integrity - Without the practice of personal integrity, you may be positive but not have the sense of what your ideas, conviction believes, and standards are to use as a basis for measuring how you are performing. Integrity comes when people's behaviors match their preferred values or when practices and ideals match. Integrity helps people evaluate themselves.

2. Self-discipline- According to Lao-tzu "People who command others are powerful, but those who have mastered themselves are more powerful. People cannot attain total awareness and enlighten without proper discipline and practice." Self-discipline enables people to cope with challenges of life. With self-discipline, one can project consequences into the future by thinking and planning.

3. Living purposefully- This is whereby one uses their powers to achieve goals. Goals could be different such as studying, building a family, sustaining a relationship or even solving a problem. Through goals, self-esteem can be raised since it's our goals that lead us forward and energize our existence.

4. Self-assertiveness- Assertiveness is basically acting and doing everything from your innermost convictions and feelings. The importance of this pillar is for one to be real. Acting from themselves and not copying other. Doing what they feel is right but not what others think.

5. Self-responsibility- Responsibility is being able to stand by what you believe or what. Not running away because of fear of conviction but standing for the truth and believe. When you respond to life challenges, you are responsible.

6. Self-acceptance- This is understanding oneself and engaging problems to find solutions in a positive way. Without self-acceptance, people tend to be influenced easily, and people are aiming to downgrade you can easily do it. Once you accept yourself, you will stick by your life rules of taking the positives and leaving the negatives. Therefore self-acceptance is a good way to boost self-esteem.

Low self-esteem.

Low self-esteem is the belief that something is wrong even when it's not. People with low self-esteem cannot stand for what they believe and are majorly influenced by others.

People go to the extent of deeming themselves stupid simply because a person made them think they are failures and that they cannot achieve specific purposes which they ended up believing. Low self-esteem is majorly developed from childhood.

What you see or hear in childhood can affect your confidence when growing up. This could have resulted from the family with instances like family conflicts and divorces, from the community whereby your family could have been perceived as poor and failures or even from the school whereby you feel to have been treated differently of the feeling of hatred.

What causes low self-esteem?

Negligent Parents. As a rule, and especially when we're youthful, our sentiments about ourselves are intensely affected by how others feel about and treat us - particularly our folks or gatekeepers.

Everybody merits a cherishing family, yet some youngsters have the setback of not getting sufficient help at home.

Guardians or gatekeepers with emotional well-being issues, substance mishandle issues, or different difficulties will most likely be unable to give their kids the care, direction and consideration they require and merit.

This can cause huge confidence issues for youngsters, as the individuals who should nurture those most may not appear to.

Negative Peers. Similarly, as the way we're dealt with by guardians or gatekeepers can extraordinarily impact our confidence, so can the way we're dealt with by peers.

Being a piece of a social gathering that cuts you down - by not regarding you, by influencing you to do things you're not happy with, by not esteeming your musings and emotions, and so on - can make you have a craving for something isn't right with you, or that the main path for you to be enjoyed is to do what others need and not tune in to your own heart and psyche.

This is extremely harming to how you see yourself.

Injury/ Mishandle - whether physical, enthusiastic, sexual or a blend of these - frequently causes sentiments of disgrace and even blame.

A man may feel that he or she accomplished remark the mishandle, that he or she was not deserving of the regard, love, and care of the abuser.

Individuals who have endured manhandle may have a lot of tension and gloom related to the occasion too, which can meddle with a man's capacity to lead a satisfying life.

Self-perception. The University of Washington's Teen Health and the Media website page reports that 53% of young ladies reviewed were despondent with their bodies, a number that ascents to 78% by the age of 17.

In her book, I'm, Like, SO Fat!, Dianne Neumark Sztainer reports that half of adolescent young ladies and 30% of teenager young men rehearse undesirable practices with an end goal to get in shape, including skipping suppers, retching, smoking cigarettes, fasting and utilizing purgatives.

Self-perception is a colossal factor in youngsters' confidence, particularly that of young ladies.

From the minute we're conceived, we're encompassed by doubtful pictures of what ladies should resemble, what the "perfect" body sort is.

Ladies' bodies are always generalized in the media, influencing it to appear just as their bodies exist for others to take a gander at, touch, utilize, and so forth.

At the point when pubescence comes around, and our bodies begin to transform, they don't change into what we see on magazine covers or in music recordings.

This can prompt feeling ugly and deficient, over the significant debilitation that accompanies seeing your body as a question for others to observe.

While young ladies are lopsidedly influenced by self-perception messages, young fellows aren't resistant.

Numerous young fellows' battle with low confidence related with weight and body organization - especially concerning bulk.
