Have faith in yourself and you will eventually learn embrace the lessons put forward to you.

One Decision to Make Change Exciting

Imagine you're in a comfortable groove playing nice in the sandbox... and then everything changes.? Change is inevitable.? Things are always changing and we get off balance.

In my upcoming book, Workplace Sandbox Strategies, Resolving Conflict from the Inside Out, I draw attention to the parallels of business and our youthful years in sandbox play. Do you recall the intrigue that we felt for continuously building because when we play with sand, we accept impermanence. Everything was always changing, and even today, nothing is ever set in sand.

When we're squeezed out of our comfort zone, into the unknown, we feel fear and frustration, and we begin to pass judgement.? But... what if we could decide to change those feelings into something more productive and peaceful.

Fear ⇒ Excitement?

Frustration ⇒ Courage?

Judgement ⇒ Curiosity?

As I work with different people and organizations, I notice that some people have decided to be excited, courageous and curious about the potential that this CoVid pandemic will provide, and others have decided to be stuck in fear and frustration. Either way is not right or wrong... it just is what it is.

Each has been given the same set of circumstances, and the same options to decide from.???

  • If you could choose between fear and excitement, which would you choose? And why??
  • If you could choose between frustration and courage, which would you rather? And why??
  • If you could choose between judgement and curiosity, which would you prefer? And why??

The reason I end each of these questions with 'why?' is because you can't change what you don't acknowledge.? You can dig deep here and really get honest with yourself as to why your deciding to be in with or against the circumstances.?

If you're standing in excitement, courage and curiosity, congratulations.? You're very proactive and influential, and your team needs you.? The greatest leaders can't lead without the commitment of those who follow.? Great decision! But it's not easy.? Your influential muscles area getting a workout and becoming stronger.? The world needs more people who think like you.???

If you're standing in fear and frustration, know that you're in charge, this is your sandbox and you get to shift the grains of sand however you decide.? Either decision will cost you energy and effort, the real question becomes, what outcome do you want????

If you're leading a change, empathize with how people are thinking and feeling about the change, and how you might change their emotional response to one of excitement, courage and curiosity.? A first step would be to acknowledge what has been lost.? Don't miss this step.? The greatest need of the human spirit is the need to FEEL understood, so that empathy is very critical, and very valuable.?

Embrace change because the high cost of fear is avoidable, and profits can be used for better things.

Never Give Up Because If You Do What Is Easy, Your Life Will Be Hard

Do you want to live an easy life or a difficult one? I know, it's a worthless question because who wants to live a life filled with pain and suffering? Yet, this is what many people choose every day, whether they are conscious of it or not. I don't intend to disparage them, however in coaching hundreds of people over the years, many of them unknowingly choose a difficult life because they make easy choices instead of important ones. Considering this, think about the choices you're making right now and their respective actions. Are they moving you towards growth and freedom or pain and suffering? Easy choices means staying within our comfort zone without exploring our limitations where real growth occurs. Sure, it's difficult to venture outside our comfort zone because of the psychological and emotional strain. However, if we do what is easy, life will be difficult because our comfort zone does not equate to personal growth to achieve our bigger goals. How does this appeal to you? Is this something you're willing to explore personally and professionally? I assure you, challenges allow us to delve into the greater depths of our resiliency instead of staying safe.

It's why we mustn't give up on our goals or highest ambitions when life gets tough, as it no doubt will. We mustn't give up because we don't know how far we will go when we rise above our challenges and obstacles. It is said we achieve our goals by growing into them, therefore growth is proportionate to our self-improvement. Growth takes place in adverse conditions because most people will thrive when conditions are favourable, yet struggle through difficulties. However, life's conditions are never ideal and so we must show up with total conviction that we will prevail, even if we don't know how. Most times we will have little knowledge how to proceed because of limited information and the uncertainty of our actions. This mustn't hold us back because giving up is not the easy way out since we must live with regret and disappointment. In view of this, I'd like you to reflect on a current goal or endeavour you want to give up on. Is this your only choice or have you considered other options? I don't have the answers because I don't know you to offer the advice you need. Similarly, I can't look into a crystal ball and predict the future because neither of us are equipped with psychic powers. But what I can tell you is more often than not, giving up is rarely the answer because if we take the easy way out, we are assured of difficult times ahead. We are likely to miss out on the personal growth that takes place when we expose ourselves to situations beyond our comfort zone.

We Must Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Is this making sense to you? Have you experienced times where you stepped out of your comfort zone, whether it be learning a new skill, habit or otherwise? If so, what did you learn from the experience and has it served you? It's no surprise that life isn't smooth sailing and if we want to achieve anything of value, we must do things that scare us every once in a while and integrate it into our reality. We must get comfortable being uncomfortable and those who give up too soon find it difficult being uncomfortable, i.e. out of their comfort zone. Sometimes giving up may be necessary, yet in most parts we can learn to channel the skills we gain from our endeavours and use them to pivot in a new direction or develop a greater awareness of our goals. So considering this, I'd like you to write down five advantages and disadvantages of giving up on a project, a dream, a relationship or career? Look at your answers and connect with the underlying motivation behind them. Reflect on why you undertook this goal in the first place and connect with what you hope to gain by giving up. It is only once we are aware of our motives that we can overcome any regret or disappointment. Otherwise, life is likely to be hard because we pursued what is easy instead of what is essential to our growth. And as you know, real growth correlates to bigger and better achievements.

Metaphors Gone Wild: Cousins and Creativity

The desire to explore, the ability to see what isn't here, and the willingness to move outside your comfort zone--these traits are kissing cousins. The same blood runs throughout their metaphoric veins. If you want to increase your CQ (creativity quotient), the first thing you must do is remind yourself that we are all capable of creativity. Those who walk around proclaiming "I'm just not creative" are dooming themselves to a life devoid of discovery. We can all express ourselves in a creative fashion. And, we can all develop our ability to do so.

WILLING TO EXPLORE?
Assess yourself: how willing are you to step outside your comfort zone--physically, emotionally, mentally? If you are restricting yourself to the same ol', same ol' that defines your life currently, you are probably not going to come up with any brilliant insights that will improve your life and/or the life of others.

Here's one way to deepen your curiosity: Ask questions. Not any old questions, but those targeted to creativity-improvement. (Keep in mind what the Father of Modern Management Science, Peter Drucker, has to say about leaders: "Leaders know how to ask questions--the right questions.") One good thought-provocative question is the "What if... ?" question.

Be playful at first, to get you (and others, as appropriate) into the explorative mode. "What if elephants could fly?" for example. You'll think of thing such as "We'd need to start manufacturing really big diapers."

Next, segue to more relevant questions: "What if we invited customers to a board meeting?" Or, "What if I decided to go to law school after all, despite being middle-aged?"Examine all the answers and then modify them to make them applicable to your own circumstances.

HAVE A VISION?
Getting things done implies a shift from the "good enough" to the "improved." In fact, having a vision is one of the two most highly valued competencies defined by our government. But if vision is the art of seeing the invisible, as Jonathan Swift asserts, then visionary individuals accomplish no small feat as they imagine and then invent the future. Creativity is closely ability with such imagination, a quality Einstein himself says is more important than knowledge.

As you work toward reification of your vision, keep in mind the Japanese proverb that asserts vision without action is a daydream. And, action without vision is a nightmare. Ideally-as a result of your hard work-you will neither daydream nor have nightmares. Rather, you will put your vision of an improved life or an improved workplace into action by taking action.

ABLE TO MOVE OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE?
Cockroaches do it and have been doing it for centuries. If, for example, a given roach discovers a new location that provides nourishment, he will leave a chemical trail the others will follow. All too often we as humans prefer to remain in our known comfort zones, rather than blaze new trails. Change is difficult for us humans. Need proof? Just Google "books about change," and you will find nearly a half- billion entries.

Many believe that cockroaches will inherit the earth if humans should disappear because of a natural or man-made disaster. The insects change as circumstances warrant. Cockroaches exhibit remarkably cooperative behaviors and are willing to reorganize themselves to fit their circumstances. For example, when researchers placed roaches in spaces with limited capacities, they divided themselves equally among those spaces, rather than trying to squeeze all of the group in just one space. They seemed to willingly give up their territory when the physical conditions change.

CREATE A NEW REALITY
Explore, imagine, change--in ways both large and small, you can create an improved future. You owe it to yourself.

Helping a Family Member or Friend With Drug Abuse and Addiction Problems

Everyone around an addict knows that he or she needs help with addiction, but often the addict cannot see it. Many die just like that. Our goal is to try to provide the family with as much information as possible regarding the intervention process.

An addict often knows in the back of his heart that he or she needs help to break the cycle for enough time to receive the necessary help. An example that is very common is when an addict encounters a major problem (for example they arrest him, throw him out of his house, lose his job) and at that moment he is perfectly willing to discuss his addiction with his loved ones. Unfortunately, if this opportunity is not quickly taken advantage of, the desire to consume the drug and the overwhelming environment will force the individual to use it again and it will be some time before he or she finds the strength to embrace rehabilitation.

What are the reasons for the addict?

The addict has things in their past or in their present that seem like devastating events that have something to do with substance addiction. An example is an addict who has lost his best friends because of his addiction. Another example is a person who loses his wife and child for drug abuse. A family member can look at the life of the addict and see hundreds of reasons why the addict should give up drugs, but unfortunately these reasons are not REAL for the addict. There are, however, problems that the addict finds to be real or significant in the life of the addict, which the addict sees as reasons for giving up the use of drugs. It is important to identify these because they can be used during the intervention to remind the addict why they should seek help.

What pressure does the addict feel now?

The addict does not necessarily have the same reality about his addiction as the non-addicts may have. For example, he or she may have half serious health problems, no friend or work or income, but feel like things are "more or less okay." Many addicts have actually overdosed and been close to death, and are using drugs the very next day. This may seem crazy, but it is actually only part of the addict's pain.

With this in mind, the addict occasionally encounters additional pressure, which forces him to make a real decision on whether he gets help or continues to use. Pending legal fees that can easily lead to jail, threats to lose your husband or wife, loss of pending work, are all possible situations that can put enough pressure on the addict to fight drug abuse and addiction, and seek help.

Although a particular one may not work in your situation, there are pressures that may have weight and that will help stimulate the addict to a decision to seek help. It is easy to assume that the addict is simply "trying to avoid going to jail" or some other evaluation that is in many cases true. The fact is that an addict will only seek help when someone or something pulls him out of his "comfort zone of addiction" and forces him to make a decision. Addicts with access to money, a place to live, and people who agree with their use and no legal problem rarely seek help. They "have no problems". It is very important to understand this and will be crucial in any attempt to intervene.

Who should be there to help?

One of the biggest considerations in the intervention is choosing who will be there. We must think this matter out in advance. The number of people present is less important than who is there. If possible, the person the addict respects the most must be present. This person is an opinion leader for the addict and has to be there to give full support to the fact that the person receives help and should be well-informed about the actual agenda.

As many family members as possible should be there as long as each and every one of them fully agrees about the fact that the person needs help and supports the overall agenda. If there is someone antagonistic in the family against the addict and is not able to control themselves from presenting arguments and accusations, then you may consider leaving that person off.

Generally, the addict has many enemies and has done wrong to the majority of the family but the arguments and the indisposition do not benefit the cause of making the addict seek treatment. In fact, it usually results in preventing this from happening because the focus of attention is placed on the discussion and not on the issue that concerns us.

There are also ways to introduce the addict through some 24/7 Helpline support. This kind of support passively drives the addict to realize their problems have solutions, motivating him or her to take the first step.

Building Confidence Isn't Easy - But There's Hope

Theoretically, building confidence shouldn't be complicated. And theoretically, confidence coaching shouldn't be necessary.

The key word here, of course, is theoretically.

Because in practice, things act differently. - Like they often do.

Building confidence should be easy. Because the principles aren't very hard to grasp.

Most of us even know most of them. In fact, here are a bunch of great principles for confidence, straight from the top of my head:

  • Have a goal in life that you continually work towards
  • Evaluate yourself continually
  • Practice active appreciation towards life and your resources
  • Learn something new every day
  • Stop comparing yourself to others
  • Do something you're passionate about
  • See the possibilities, not the limitations
  • Get out of your comfort zone and do things that unsettle you
  • Practice physical exercise 20-30 minutes daily
  • Meditate 10-20 minutes daily
  • Eat lots of vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fibres and protein
  • Don't eat processed foods, junk foods, starchy carbs, saturated fats, candy, cake, etc.
  • Don't smoke or do excessive amounts of drugs and alcohol
  • Sleep 7-8 hours every night
  • Surround yourself with people who support and affirm you
  • Shun people who bring you down and hold you back
  • Stand up for yourself, speak up when you want to, fear nothing, never give up, accept what you cannot change, etc.
I could go on, but hopefully you get the point.
... Which is, like I said, that by far most normal people know by far most of these things already. I mean, most of these points are common sense and knowledge.

Why, then, is building confidence so hard for some people?

Because there's a difference between "easy" and "simple".

Casually sketching the formula for a great life is, in fact, almost insultingly easy. However, carrying it out in practice is what's hard. And, for many people, downright impossible without help.

The good news, then, is that it's simple.

In fact, building confidence is like building muscle. It's hard, and it takes effort, but it gets easier over time and if done consistently.
Also, what I've found is that the same principle goes for the vast majority of people: It doesn't matter as much what you specifically do with your life rather than the fact that you do it while you maintain building confidence.

In fact, if you keep building confidence continually, it won't matter much what you do, because you'll be able to do pretty much anything. And you'll be confident enough to calmly accept the things you cannot do -- for now, anyway.

It's like taking a shower, brushing your teeth, or even owning a car: If you want it to keep working, you gotta maintain it.

Yes, it's hard. Yes, it'll take time and effort. But that's no reason not to do it anyway. Because there is no such reason. There is only the excuses that we make for ourselves out of fear.

ACTION ITEM:

This week, get out of your comfort zone. Do just ONE thing that really scares you, but which you really want to do. It could be talking to someone about a problem; or how you feel about them. It could be walking up to a complete stranger asking for directions. As long as it's something that really unsettles you.

Why would we do something like this? Because, when practiced regularly, getting out of our comfort zone makes us grow. It strengthens us and makes us more confident. So for goodness' sakes: Do it, and keep it up.

Set Your Boundaries: Learn to Say "No" (By Rachana Gupta)

As a child, I was deeply influenced by the story of Cinderella and whenever somebody in the family asked who your favorite is, I would proudly announce her name. I wanted to wear dress like Cinderella and wanted to have fairy as a friend. When somebody asked why I like her so much, I would say because she is beautiful, truthful and kind. She always helps others and does good things to even those who are bad. She never says "No".

As children, we learned that saying no was impolite or inappropriate. We grow up watching movies or family examples where elders talk in front of us that people who say no are bad. Often "kindness" is associated with saying "yes" but in reality these are two different things. According to psychologist Dr Susan Newman, author of "The Book of No" the problem is more in women than men. In the words of Dr. Newman, "Women have been raised to be care givers and nurturers, and which is why the problem is more prevalent for women than men", however in my opinion the problem is not gender specific and it exists both in men and women. For some people this becomes a habit, or even an addiction.

In order to understand this little better let me tell you the reasons that makes a person always say yes-

  1. For Love- It is proven fact that human beings are emotional and we all want love and affection. This is one of the most significant reasons that lead some of us to say yes because we think saying No will draw people apart from us and we will not be loved as much.
  2. Fear of being rejected- We all want to be loved and hate being rejected. The idea of rejection is painful and sometimes just out of doubt, some of us say yes in spite of the fact that we want to say no in our heart.
  3. For showing kindness- We all have seen this in the movies that good people are always kind and giving, and bad people are always unkind. They always say no to everyone. Saying No is often associated with rudeness and hence we choose to be kind instead of being rude.
  4. For uncertainty of future- We often take wrong jobs and stay with people who take us for granted just because we develop a comfort zone around those familiar people and jobs. As humans, we sense danger in the unknown areas and therefore keep giving ourselves false excuses; to stay in those wrong jobs and with wrong people and keep saying yes to the things that make us unhappy.
  5. Cultural pressure- As children we are always taught to be kind and say yes to everyone especially to elders and people in authoritative positions such as teachers. Hence, some of us as adults, find it difficult to say no to older people and to the managers at work place.

The cycle that starts in our childhood keeps going and we are trapped to the extent that we start feeling guilty whenever we say no to people. In most of the cases it's just an over hyped scenario that we build in our minds. In some other cases however, things get weird after people, who are habitual of listening yes from us suddenly start getting no. They start feeling that we have turned arrogant and some even feel betrayed. Sometimes we end up feeling lonely because of the sudden troubles we face in our close relationships. The same thing happens in the workplace where our colleagues and managers don't expect us to say no.
In spite of all these impacts, in my opinion saying no is much better than saying yes for most of the things because of the following reasons-

  1. It gives you the opportunity to be true to yourself- Saying No to things that makes you unhappy saves your time and energy for doing other productive stuffs. It gives you the time to be genuinely involved in the things that you truly enjoy doing.
  2. Good for mental health- There's nothing worse than saying yes for something you don't want to do. From my personal experience, it brings a lot of frustration and unnecessary stress. Saying No without feeling guilty will help you feel relaxed and you can perform your routine with increased focus and positive energy.
  3. It gives you the confidence to demand what you think you deserve- Learning to say No gives boost to your confidence level and helps you to demand for the things you actually deserve, whether it's respect in personal relationships, higher pay or increased responsibilities at work.
  4. It helps you know who your true well wishers are- People who stick to you just for getting favor of some kind will not stay with you once they learn that you are capable of saying No to them. Hence, it's also a good technique to understand who all your real wishers are.

Saying No is very difficult for people who have the habit of saying yes. Some tips derived from my personal experiences to tackle this issue-
  1. Understand that saying no doesn't makes you a bad person- As adults, it is our choice whether to say yes or no for something. Letting go off the childhood preaching and saying no with confidence doesn't makes you a bad person.
  2. Take time before you say yes- Every time someone asks you to do something, don't say yes right away, instead take time (a day or two), and think whether or not you actually want to do it. After contemplating, politely accept or refuse the request.
  3. Remember that your self-worth doesn't depend on what others think of you- Your self-worth is what you recognize and it should not be subject to opinion of others. You don't need to please everyone you know. Realize that you are better than that and certainly worth much more.

It's a good thing to be considerate, helping and generous. A person can be kind and at the same time set his/her boundaries. It's important not to lose ourselves and our self-respect on the way to being compassionate and saying yes. In the words of Paulo Coelho, "When you say yes to others, make sure you are not saying no to yourself" and in the words of Tony Blair "The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes. It is very easy to say yes".

How to Handle the Estrangement of Friends

Have you ever fallen into the predicament of your friends staying aloof? What do you do? Read on for insights.

If your old friends estrange from you and no longer want to keep in touch with you, it's time to move on.

You should be on the lookout for new friends that are like-minded like the present you. You may have grown too far so that your old friends no longer serve you. Or, your friends may have leaped forward and made giant steps in their life so that they no longer desire to be your friend.

Whatever may be the case, it's time to form new circles and be part of new social groups.

As for me, I faced a similar problem recently. My old friends estranged from me. Presently I like to spend most of my time at home. So I have found solace in online communities. I have two such great communities. Let me describe them to you now because you may also benefit.

I write online articles on two sites including EzineArticles.com and share them with my subscribers' community in weekend newsletters including meaningful quotes. I ask them to forward the newsletter to friends and loved ones if they love it.

The other site I write is HubPages.com. Here I write more personal story articles usually with a moral line. And my subscribers love them as well. I have also got united with the community within the site where we read and comment on each other's articles and have loads of fun. We usually give good suggestions as well as constructive and positive feedback that raises the spirit of fellow writers. It is a good way to grow in writing arena.

After a while, I may think these communities don't serve me any longer because I have grown and matured further. So I may think of going back to a career in my field of expertise and find new colleagues to spend time with.

This is life. Nothing is permanent. You have got to change your friends and social circles from time to time as you leave your comfort zone and enter new territories.

Summing up, this is the message of my article: Have fun with your friends while they last. But don't break down when they outdistance you. Nothing will ever remain the same and neither will friends. So be brave, get up on your feet and explore new places both online and offline to meet new people and make them your current friends if you find them genuine, gracious and like-minded.

Exploding Our Pre-Conceptions - Transforming Difference & Tensions Into Their Creative Potential

Our difference is our potential waiting to happen! But the way through has to be experienced first-hand for it to really affect the change we want.

Arnold Weinstein grew up as an identical twin, which affected his perception of his identity. Most people could not tell him apart from his twin brother which meant he started life with a "blurrier" sense of his edges. It gave him a fairly unique take on the world right from the start.

Unlike most of us, he did not grow up with a "normal", fixed sense of self because he was so physically similar to someone else - his twin brother. People confused him with his brother so in some ways they thought he was someone else. He has grown consequently with a conviction that the outward forms we see may not be what they seem. For him it became natural to swim between what most people see as something fixed (identity), because his way of looking and understanding had become unfixed from life's experiences. It was therefore full of possibility and diversity. Life was a fluid interchange of possibility.

He experienced first hand the wealth we can harvest in our lives and work from this place and he highlights how the artist in us knows and experiences this, often unnoticed every day. Our left brained and logical self is celebrated daily, in the outer world in the ways we organise and strategise, but how much space do we leave for our right brain, our creative eye, the eye that perceives so much further afield from that which we can see?

I am a twin, although not identical, so I can't claim such an intense early experience as Arnold W. But I am an artist born from two cultures, and I can also relate to living in, what I now call "the space in-between", or the water that runs between landmasses; a hugely creative place. Let me explain.

We were recently visually facilitating at the Summit on Diversity in India and collaborating with Being at Full Potential. Participants, (myself included when I wasn't drawing) literally stepped into this "space in-between" during exercises and experienced it first hand.

In my case I found myself telling a story from my past of when my Spanish mother-in-law and I found ourselves in a rather passionate interaction about how we view life. We had somehow found ourselves outside of our comfort zones and swimming in this "space in-between" each of us. Here we were trying to express how we perceive life (and perhaps discovering words for that at the same time) to someone who we discovered then, might as well have been from Mars. What I unearthed in that interplay, helped me understand where we were both coming from; it literally bridged the gap between us. I could only have done that by listening to her from an unfixed place within me; from a place where nothing is necessarily as it appears. This is a very malleable place where I was able to listen more and be in the shoes of another thereby making the connection.

That conversation broke through so many cultural and personal barriers. I now see that she sees life much as a photographic scene that is fixed and unmoving, and I see it a bit like those desert mirages forming and un-forming depending on where you stand. No cultural norms here, or racial or societal difference, or blame or finger-pointing, just a sharing of different understanding from human perception.

The point here is, that two very different people were able to come together in their difference and sit and look at it together, as if comparing and contrasting brush strokes and colour usage as inevitably as artists will do.

Experiencing "Diversity" first-hand as illustrated in the story above and at the Summit in India, was transformative. Without having a personal taste of difference by bringing it "home" which made it intrinsically impactful and meaningful to me, "Diversity" would have remained a meaningless word instead of having the power to bring us together like musicians tuning their instruments to create a beautiful, new melody.

Then we left the Summit, got on planes to different parts of the planet and took ourselves and our learnings back home. We have each stepped back into the same homes, and work and relationships on our returns, yet have we each noticed profound changes. I have noticed the differences firstly in myself and then in the responses from others. My personal relationships, some of them historically quite challenging, seem more malleable and less rigid, with more possibility for creating something different between us. That water that seems to run in the spaces between us is richer, gentler, and more colourful, with a sense of far more possibility. What I thought wasn't working in my relationships has suddenly opened up to connection and engagement. I feel now that we are starting anew.

This personal experiencing has shifted us and given us such deeply powerful insights on something we thought we understood - "diversity". It has changed each of us and directly affected the ways we interact with others.

We have dived deeper than a surface interpretation of the word "diversity" might suggest - multi-cultural get-togethers for example. We have discovered new approaches to old patterns in ourselves and in our relationships with others and with our work and professional encounters. Seemingly unworkable differences between us have transformed into invaluable and enriching encounters, and brought new understanding and responses to our apparent differences.

I believe this new take on Diversity can work for the benefit of organisations; this quality of "in-betweenness" can support what we so often experience as struggle and separation to the enormous benefit of us all, not to even mention the bottom line!

Might we all dare to look beyond what we think we are and the labels we give to what we see, and delve a little more deeply passed the visible and into what lies just below the surface - our creative potential - in order to bridge the gaps and transform our professional and personal lives? I think it's worth a try!

This new space is the creative eye in action that reaps an infinitely rich harvest for us all.

6 Ways Structure Can Help You Achieve Peak Creative Performance (By Justine Clay)

Business man shows success abstract flow by ffaalumni, on Flickr

As a business coach for freelancers and creative professionals, I specialize in working with people who are in a place of transition in their career or creative business. While their unique circumstances vary, more often than not they share one key challenge; they're not fulfilling their creative and commercial potential.

I've come to believe that a successful creative business is a blend of four things: (1) a great product or service (2) good strategy (3) hard work and (4) a willingness to be out of our comfort zone more often that not. Hey, if it were easy, everyone would do it, right?

But the creative business is a unique and sensitive animal. If it's all about strategy and objectives, we lose the creative magic and if it's all about creativity, nothing gets done. So, how can we find and maintain balance?

After working with creative professionals for 15 years, being business owner myself for eight and benefitting from the wisdom of mentors and coaches, I've come to the conclusion that success comes down to one thing:

Creating a solid structure, within which there is a lot of freedom.

If you're in that place of transition and don't know how to balance structure and freedom, I'd like to share 6 strategies that have worked for me:

1) Know what you want from your business
If we don't know where we want to go, we can't create a plan to get there. Set aside some uninterrupted time to really think about what you want from your business. When we're honest with ourselves, the answer is sometimes very different from what we think we want. For example:

- Are you starting a business and want to build a roster of ideal clients?
- Are you happy with your business and clients, but would like a few more?
- Do you want to build a business that is flexible enough to work around your family's schedule?
- Do you want to be known as a thought-leader in your industry?

You can see how the strategy would be vastly different for each of these businesses, so it's important to get clear from the outset.

2) Write down everything you need to do to achieve your goal
Doing a brain dump is a great way to get all of your ideas out of your head and into one place. I love the mind-map method. It's simple, effective and perfect for visual types. Here's how you do it:

Take a piece of paper and put your main topic, e.g. your business name, at the center. As thoughts come to mind, draw branches from the main topic and write down that thought or objective (use as few words as possible). You can create sub-branches for additional thoughts or action steps.

I love Coggle for creating mind maps that look pretty too!

3) Prioritize and calendarize (I know it's not a word, but it should be!)
Take your mind map and number your goals by priority. Start with number one, let's use Networking as the example, and list action steps you need to take. They night be:

(a) Research BNI and visit one chapter this month
(b) Become a member of Freelancer's Union and attend one event this month
(c) Research local AIGA chapter

Now enter those action steps into your calendar. Once it's in the calendar it moves from a "should" to a done deal. Now you're free to do something else.

4) Bundle your to-do's
Have you ever ended your day feeling exhausted and frustrated because you ran around like a headless chicken, without much to show for it? I have and it sucks.
I now bundle similar tasks together and take care of them in one sitting. I set Friday aside for book keeping and general admin. Monday is dedicated to content development and marketing and I cluster my coaching sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday so that I can stay in the zone and be as present as I can. Clustering your efforts also helps you balance "doing" and "creating".

5) Work with your natural rhythms
It's no coincidence that my writing/content work is slated for Monday when I'm fresh and my boring admin is on Friday, when I'm spent. I go for an early morning run on one of my coaching days, knowing that I will benefit the most from the boost of energy and clarity it provides.

6) Make time to play and create
Do you deny yourself downtime because you feel guilty that you're not being "productive?" I struggle with this and, while we may think of it as a noble trait, it's really not. The fact is, we need time to dream, play and create. It's what gives us the magic, the inspiration and energy we need to do all of the above steps. Down time should be as much of a priority as everything else. So put THAT in your calendar and stick to it!

7 Easy Ways to Stimulate and Get That Creative Juice Flowing

Creativity - if only it were a pill we can take every time we are in dire need of it. But it isn't and it can be frustrating when our brains are as blank as the white sheet in front of us after an hour of waiting for an idea to pop up.

There are a number of things that stifle creative juices from flowing and doing things to stimulate creativity is just as important as avoiding things that stifle it. However, be assured of one thing, you can be creative if you will set your mind free to innovate, be it solutions, inventions, or artistic creations. The key is not to force your mind but to liberate it.

So here are 7 ways you can try to stimulate creativity by liberating yourself to think freely.

#1 Break the Routine

Routines are good because they help us do things faster in an organised fashion, but routines can stifle creativity. Like when you go to the same restaurant everyday, don't bother to look at the menu, and order the same thing. If you want to get your mental juices flowing, break out of your routine once in a while. There are a trillion ways to do this.

Go out of your office and bring your laptop to the park. Take a different route to work. Put on your clothes on with a different sequence. Wear a color you don't like. Eat something you've never tasted. Or go on vacation to a place you've never been.

Think of something out of the box or out of your comfort zone. The point is to allow yourself to see things in a different way, to realise possibilities, and to discover something refreshing.

What routines can you break this week? Have fun and creative in breaking them.

#2 Chill Out and Relax Your Brain

Do you keep a small notebook in your pocket? One comes handy when bright ideas pop up during the weirdest times of the day. Don't you just love how they come when you least expect them? When your mind is at ease and your subconscious is free to fly, you are most receptive to creative ideas. Doing things that relax our brain helps our imagination fly.

Feeling stuck up? Listen to good music. Music stimulates the part of our brain in charge of our emotions and creativity. Feeling choked inside your office, take a walk along a river or somewhere where there's water. The view and sound of water is known to having a soothing and relaxing effect.

#3 Exercise and Recreate

Feeling pressured? Play an enjoyable game or go on a 20-minute high intensity workout. Physical activity loosens up our body and our minds as well. There's actually a study that shows a positive correlation between regular exercise and creative performance.

Another great creativity booster is laughter. It is not only the best medicine for sickness, it is also a great prescription for creativity block because it helps get rid of stress, which in turn stifles creativity.

#4 Change Your Perspective

Much creativity and insights can be gained not only from others' creative ideas but also from simple people we meet every day. By looking through other people's eyes, we gain new perspective on things.

When was the last time you had a meaningful chat with a child or an elderly person? Was your attention called to something you would never have noticed in a thousand years? Getting to know people from different walks of life is a treasure chest for inspiration. Have a meaningful conversation with one person per day. Or simply listen to the people you meet along the way, and try to find something you can takeaway from your conversations.

Then there's also social media and the Internet where you can test an idea... get a conversation running... just by posting a mind-boggling question or even a survey as your status, tweet, or blog entry. Or go ask a select few through a closed Facebook group.

And as you go along, try to challenge old ways of thinking. Always keep yourself open to other people's perspective.

#5 Try a Fun Mental Exercise

Imagine you were tasked to lead a sales team to market air-cooling units in Alaska, how will you sell them? Think of something impossible to do and brainstorm how to make that thing possible. Think of as many uses as you can for human hair, or a pencil, a water tumbler, etc. Mental exercises like these train our brains to think out of the box. It is also a great team building activity.

#6 Surround Yourself with Inspiration

Some have a creativity room while others have an inspiration wall. The idea is to collect items and photos of things that inspire you and help stir up your imagination. If you are more auditory than visual, perhaps you can have a creativity playlist that gets your creative juices flowing.
Best of all, surround yourself with people who inspire you. There is something about hanging out with people who are on fire and driven with a passion for life. This is why choosing a mentor (or mentors) is important. Do you listen to tutorial CDs and read books by people who are successful in the field you have chosen? People with similar passions have the power to inspire and get your stirred up, and the wealth of experience this mentor or coach shares can trigger a wealth of ideas and strategies applicable to your journey.

Remember there are countless webinars available for free, and so are "mastery" groups you can join. Find one and get encouragement, inspiration, and lessons from determined people like you who are also serious about pursuing their dreams.

#7 Let It Flow

After you're done preparing for your brainstorming session or whatever it is you need creativity for, the next step is to be candid with your ideas and list them all down. If you think creative geniuses always get it the first time, or the fifth time, you're badly mistaken. The most potent creative sparks come from a long list of ideas that are either too boring or too silly. If you are writing something, start writing freestyle. Don't think of grammar, syntax, artistry, or what have you. Just write anything that flows out of your hand. The secret to finding an explosive idea is a willingness to explore and keep exploring.

The Ultimate Ego Trip

Let go of fear and feelings of inferiority, and we will get somewhere, really. Sure, we read this beginning sentence after I write it, but we are not reading into it. Most of us will sneak and "tip-toe" through the tulips on that concept. That means that we will be afraid to practice that idea to some extent however deeply and meaningfully we read that concept, sometimes especially when we read it deep enough to practice it. When I wrote that first sentence, even I was like for a millisecond, honestly: "Wow, where did that come from?" Everyone and everything at some level loves its comfort zone, and when we go above or below that comfort zone, fear and inferiority will rear its ugly head (or tail). Some people rise above it, some people do not rise above it, but when things happen, it is there.

The best we can do with all those feelings is to let them go, destroy them or whatever we can do to get right with ourselves, because our comfort zone is just an illusion. The reality is that everything is possible in existence, and in objective reality there are no comfort zones, just reality. Wayne W. Dyer called them all Erroneous Zones, and I see why now. The error is thinking that reality comes down to what we think it is, purely. Reality is everything in existence including God and Nature, purely, not what we want to think it is. Also, genuinely trying to please anyone other than yourself is a closed book and dead weight reality that does not have value. Why? When you realize that life is within you, and nowhere else, you are working with something living, and not toward a reality that does not have value.

I was watching the last "Happy Days" episode made in 1984, depicting the year 1972, when the character Richie Cunningham punched "the Fonz"/Arthur Fonzarelli character, and before Richie punched "the Fonz"/Arthur Fonzarelli, Richie talked to him about how he pleased everyone else but himself, and was a perfect soldier, and had everyone else depending on him and drank beer to drown his sorrows, but when Richie Cunningham realized the reality of the situation, he snapped back to all right with a better understanding of how reality works. Sure, you can serve others, but you cannot have illusions about it.

Realistically, you must always face yourself, not others. Avoiding yourself fearfully is the key to failure. Success is courage. Create your character without fear of reality and you will genuinely get somewhere. After all, playing God is the ultimate comfort zone, and just that, playing God. Being a complete and real person is just that, being a complete and real person. Those two sentences are the key to avoiding cults, guilt traps and genuine weakness. Develop strength from within genuinely in a genuinely "boot strap" or initializing way that does it step by step and you will get somewhere genuinely.

So, I end with a personal example: I face blocks and frustration like everyone else and pay the same prices, and do work like everyone else. My big flaw when I get angry with myself is that I even have momentary envy of a celebrity like O.J. Simpson (before the murders when he had people respecting him and worshipping him like he could "not do wrong" by reality). I mean, I feel like just the opposite of what he seemed to be: I am "weird", taciturn, "nerdy", "strange", and overly rational and "realistic" about life at times. I even shun being "a public hero" or whatever. Also, I live like a monk when it comes to women, I am not homosexual or anything, I just want meaningful and friendly relationships when I do relate to women. In short, O.J. Simpson "looks like a winner", and when I get angry with myself for my realistic and "slow-cooked" viewpoint, frustration should set in, but I do not let it. I know what is up fully, and I make myself all right with it. Is that not all our cases?

How To Be More Interesting.

Man Using Black Binoculars Near Forest Trees at Daytime

In order to write or create interesting things, you have to BE interesting.

Trying to come up with exciting content or to make your content more interesting is hard to do if you are sitting in your house or your office and living a boring life.

That may sound harsh, but the truth is that people want to read about others who are doing the things they want to do. Who are living a life that is inspiring and engaging.

I have a background in experiential education, and I believe that experiences teach us things at a deeper level. They help us to grow, they expand our knowledge of the world around us and challenge us to figure out how we fit into it.

New experiences take us out of our comfort zone, challenge our assumptions, change our perspective. New experiences open doors for new ideas for things to write about and share with others. It is great for opening up your mind and igniting a new voice with which to share your message and expertise.

I want to challenge you to BE interesting.

And that means trying new things. Get out! Do something fun.

When was the last time you tried something new? Did something challenging that made someone else say "Wow!"

You don't have to leave the country or even your town to create new, meaningful experiences. There are a multitude of opportunities just waiting for you if you are ready to find them. Go somewhere new. Meet someone new. Eat something new. Anything!

And if you keep your mind open, you will certainly learn something new.

Then share it!

That's what gives you great stories to weave into your content. It brings a personal side to what you are sharing. It makes you more interesting!

Look around at the experiences you are already having. If they aren't very compelling, get out there and have some new experiences! Then figure out how to share them in your content.

I'm already interested to see what you will share!

Do You Really Want to Say No to This Opportunity?

Woman Standing on Cliff

Many of us will have been offered opportunities that promised to take us out of our comfort zone. They may have included meeting new people, taking on tasks we felt ill-equipped to tackle, going to unfamiliar places, doing something rather daunting.

When faced with such a request we have to decide, 'do I do it, yes or no?'. Our immediate gut reaction may be to play safe and walk away from the stress of doing something new and challenging. But the fundamental question we need to ask ourselves at those times is, what happens if I decline, how will I feel about myself, do I really want to say no to this opportunity?

- Fear and panic can run a destructive path through our emotions, bringing with it a terrified voice that asks, 'what if I make a fool of myself', 'what if I freeze or can't do it?' Often though we're not stranded all alone in a scary, confusing situation. Assistance may be available in the form of friends or colleagues, who are often happy to provide help, support and guidance. If we have a conversation at the outset to discuss our concerns there are often positive ways to make the new opportunity work out well and bring many associated benefits, lessons and outcomes.

- Often too, there can be a 'should' or 'ought' narrative running in the background, compounding the pressure to follow other people's suggestions and do what they've advised. Pressure can come from family, friends, colleagues who may enjoy the opportunity to live vicariously through us, watching us undertake things they'd perhaps never do themselves.

- Determining what is the best, most honest path for us to follow can be a hard exercise. It's great to stretch ourselves and have a go, extend ourselves, maybe even scare ourselves a little, but we need to be clear about our motivation, rationale and ultimate goals.

- Yes, we can all say 'no' and revert back to normality, back to the status quo, but is that really as appealing and comfortable as it's cracked up to be. Don't you find that your comfort zone decreases in size the longer you spend in it? Sometimes taking a leap of faith and having a go, no matter what the outcome might be, can be invigorating and life-enhancing. It can re-ignite our enthusiasm to try something new, take on a challenge and learn a different skill, take a chance in another direction.

- Failure or lack of immediate success can be viewed in many different ways. You may initially not achieve as good a result as you would like but by whetting your appetite, dipping your toe in the water you may find that you earn the respect of others, improve your confidence and build your self-esteem. When others are aware that you're trying and having a go, taking a chance they will often see you in a better light and may even offer to mentor, support and encourage you along the way.

- More importantly, ask yourself how will you feel afterwards if you turn down an opportunity and say 'no'? Yes, you've played safe, avoided the stress and panic, not risked failure or a setback, but surely it's also disappointing to avoid risk and stay safely within your skill sets. Often when we've undertaken something daunting and new we come away feeling rather pleased with ourselves, even when things don't work out wonderfully well. We didn't shirk the chance and instead knuckled down and gave it our best shot. We may even congratulate ourselves on our bravery and courage, giving us something to be proud of.

But ultimately it is your right to say 'no'. If you really feel that you can't face what is being asked of you, then say so, clearly and without apology either to others or yourself. If this opportunity is meant to be a part of your life then it will present itself again, hopefully with more auspicious timing, perhaps in a different form. By then you'll be feeling better equipped, more positive and ready to give it a go. Check what your internal reasons are and then decide if you really want to say no to this opportunity.

Thoughts About Creativity (By German Calvo)

person holding click pen

I don't want to believe that most people can not be creative, that you have to be genius in order to show some creativity, and yet, for me it seems like creativity is something really difficult to achieve. Why is this? Well this is a good moment to have thoughts about creativity and see how this article flows...

Probably those who are very creative on their passions, perhaps in the arts, or in sports, especially team sports, can tells us that creativity is something that we all are able to experience. Come to think of it, I used to play Football (soccer for you in the USA) and now that I think back, even I did things that were really creative and spontaneous in the field that not only I enjoyed, other people and my team mates enjoyed too.

On this very topic, this morning I finished reading the second book that Jordan Belfort wrote: "Catching The Wolf of Wall Street" and towards the end, he started to narrate how at the beginning he thought his writing was rubbish and his cell-mate also said it was useless as well. But then, reading a single book several times by Tom Wolfe: "The Bonfire Of The Vanities" changed his mind and the mental block was gone.

Wow! Both Jordan's books are brilliantly written and very funny and extremely brutal in their personal explicitness. It was like a personal exorcism of spectacular proportions. Now, I can't write either and I've tried to get the kindle edition of 'The Bonfire Of The Vanities' to see how I can learn from it too, only to find Amazon doesn't have it for that medium... I may end up buying the soft cover version instead.

Well then, what is creativity? It can be, I suppose, either a sudden spark of inventive activity or a series of steps that can be learned like exercising a muscle toward something rewarding that can be appreciated not only by you but by many people as well... Perhaps are results that come from paced effort or from sporadic brilliance, I don't exactly know really.

Yet I want to believe that many people could have brilliant creativity even, out of a concerted effort and desire to learn measured steps toward its attainment. I want to believe that many people are able to appreciate things, to take steps to build a muscle of creativity either in their personal life or in their business life, why not in both.

If for instance, you take up drawing, yes drawing portraits or landscapes views, are you going to be great when you just start to do them? Probably not! OK, may be not at first, but imagine you go on to draw many portraits and you start really liking drawing portraits; do you think you are not going to build a muscle that creates powerful and even beautiful portraits? I would bet that you could, especially if you had the desire to do them.

That was an example and really that activity could be extended to many other facets of creativity. It is something that is all around us if we just care to look for it and step out of our comfort zone to practice what is necessary to bring it out to the surface.

In business, in online business too, there are so many activities which can benefit from creative output, like writing sales letters for selling your products, or making videos, audios and creating stunning graphics for your presentations and a lot more besides.

One of the most important things on creativity is just starting to move, get a grip on starting that which takes your fancy, or better still, that which needs doing creatively. Because once you start, the muscle begins to build more and more, which at the same time confidence is increasing with every experience or step that you take.

May be we should all me reminded of the artists who spend most of their time developing their art; can they become more creative that way? You bet they can, in fact they do so it is a good incentive, knowing this, for all of us to try to increase the muscle of creativity that most probably exist in almost all of us.

To your success

Visualization Revelation - Brilliant Trick to Achieve a Dream (By Maryanne Pope)

Woman Sitting on Top of Building's Edge

"If you can visualize ahead of time the positive emotion associated with your achievement, this will help bring about the actual achievement faster."

Barbara Edie

A few years ago, I was at a business networking event and heard an excellent speaker, Barbara Edie, deliver a presentation that really resonated with me... but not in a comfortable way. Barbara is the author of the book, Creating the Impossible; What It Take to Bring Your Vision to Life.

Barbara's presentation was about the importance of achieving our dreams. She started off by discussing why many people DON'T pursue their dreams, including the simple fact that comfort plays a big role. "Safe and secure," Barbara said, "is often the reason people stay where they are and don't make a change."

This, I thought to myself (rather snottily), is not my problem. I've achieved plenty of my dreams... stepping outside my comfort zone has become second nature to me.

Barbara then went on to talk about the importance of having focus. Again... nothing new here for me, I thought. I have laser-beam focus when it comes to tackling the tasks I need to, to achieve my dreams.

Well... most of my dreams.

Okay... some of my dreams.

"When you know what your vision is, and you have the focus to take the necessary steps to achieve it," Barbara was saying (when I started paying attention again), "and yet, you still aren't actually achieving it, then a useful exercise is to take the time to tap into the positive emotion that you will feel when you do achieve it."

Barbara suggested that if you can visualize ahead of time the positive emotion associated with your achievement, this will help bring about the actual achievement faster.

I scribbled furiously in my notebook. Positive emotion? I immediately thought of a screenplay I had been writing for more than a decade and despite my best intentions (and supposed laser-beam focus), I still hadn't got the script to where it needed to be... where I KNEW it could be.

Why?

Because whenever I thought about the finished product - the film playing in theatres - I felt very little in the way of positive emotions.

When I actually thought about what it would feel like to have this controversial film showing in theatres, my stomach tightened into knots, my heart hammered in my chest and I found it difficult to breathe. All sorts of negative emotions bubbled to the surface, right there at the table: fear, anxiety, discomfort, shame. What if the film sucks? What if it is a failure? What if everybody hates it? What if people are angry at me? What if I get called a hypocrite? What if I get sued? What if that is the end of my career?

Or what if the opposite happens and the film IS a hit and (since we're visualizing) wins all sorts of awards and no one hates me and calls me nasty names? How will I handle all the extra work and responsibilities and change that come with significant success? I can scarcely handle my life and work responsibilities now.

Which is when it hit me: no wonder I hadn't achieved that dream yet! With such negativity attached to the realization of the achievement, I was inadvertently making it pretty much impossible to achieve the dream.

I put my pen down and leaned back in my chair, exhausted. Clearly, I had some work to do... not just in terms of getting the screenplay finished but, more importantly, to first change my attitude towards the finished project.

If you are frustrated by not achieving a dream that you know could be achieved by now, I suggest you try sitting still a moment and visualizing how you feel when you "see" your achievement manifested in the real world. If you feel positive emotions, good. Keep visualizing. If you feel negative emotions, pay close attention... and then make the changes you need to make.
