Success In Business or Life Is No Accident

"Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do." - Pele

Pele is regarded as one of the best, if not the best soccer player of all time. It's a great quote and he was right when he originally said those words.

Not too long ago I had dinner with a friend who was lamenting how tough things were. He wanted to develop a new business, but it wasn't easy for him. He had experienced a series of obstacles that were seriously jeopardizing his business, which was less than two years old. He was trying to work through in his mind if he should close it, reset and start again with something fresh.

"If you really want to do something, you will find a way. If you don't, you'll find an excuse." - Jim Rohn

I reminded him that nothing in life is easy, and that includes business. Success is exceedingly hard work. And, I will say that's probably why some people are never successful. I think there are a variety of reasons for this:

  • Some people quit too soon. Success takes time and hard work. Oftentimes, people quit too soon. Life is full of challenges. In business, people may challenge your ideas or how you're doing things. Sometimes, that's enough to make people quit. You can't do that. You have to figure out ways around the obstacles that come your way.
  • Some people see failure as the end. I see it as the beginning. You have to become very comfortable with failure. There really is no success without failure. Embrace failure because you learn from it. If something fails, study the lessons and make the necessary changes to improve on what you're trying to develop.
  • Some people don't create habits toward their goals. If you have a goal, it's typically something you aspire toward accomplishing. One of the easiest ways to not succeed is to not create daily habits around what you're doing. In other words, you have to work at it every single day. Success doesn't come with only part-time or sporadic attention to your goal.

"Success is not final. Failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." - Winston Churchill

I think we live at a time when everyone is looking for immediate success. The only thing is that no matter what it may look like in press articles or movies, how to achieve success has not changed a bit.

It still takes time.

It still takes patience.

It still takes persistence.

Don't believe people when they make it appear as if what they've done happened overnight. Yes, potentially once in a while someone may get a lucky break and it may appear that success happened overnight. More than likely, that's not the case. Success takes time, and that's just part of the process.

Keep at it.
