It is our nature to seek greater goals. You will be your most successful, and most fulfilled, at those times you are working toward the achievement of your own goals. You will feel your most passionate, enthusiastic and inspired when your goals cause you to stretch that which you know to be certain that you can achieve.
Success is the continual achievement of your OWN predetermined goals stabilized by balance and purified by belief. There is nothing in that definition about money, power, authority or fame. If you are successful and achieve fame; however, you sold your soul to the devil to do that... compromised your integrity, or worse, will you be able to look yourself in the mirror?
If you only listen to people who tell you what you want to hear, you will never get where you want to go. In other words, if you are in a position of power or authority, and your subordinates, peers and friends/family are afraid to tell you the truth, you are not getting the feedback and advice needed to be successful. Listen to others and learn from others, but choose your own path.
Effective leaders are "starters" who fuel the actions of those who are more the "doers". This usually means the leader is more driven, assertive, influential and more prone to lead and take charge. Being the captain on the bridge vs. the execution person does not give license to silence well-intended advice from others.
Successful and happy leaders invoke their authority very sparingly. The best leaders use the power they have earned to create a climate of trust, cooperation and accomplishment in which people are positively motivated. The best way to increase your personal power is to seek additional responsibility. The amount of responsibility you take is related directly to the amount of power and influence you possess.
To be successful and happy, you have to be yourself. You have to be intentional about shaping your life according to your values. Trust yourself, believe in yourself and be honest with yourself. Others will trust, believe and be honest with you and it is that foundation that will enhance personal power. If you are to be a successful and happy leader, establish healthy, open relationships with others.
It is lonely at the top and perhaps you do not have someone to talk to about issues. Through the powerful dynamics of coaching, you can learn to take control over your personal direction. Coaching is a developmental processes and valuable in mentoring leaders in senior roles and those in professional services or private companies that must augment their technical skills with basic leadership/management skills.
Success is not a destination. It is a journey, a state of being and a way of life. Still looking for the secret to success and happiness?
Successful people are self-motivated. Developing personal power is critical to success. You have more potential than you will ever use.
