Comfort zone – is a state within which a person feels at ease, in control and experiences low anxiety.
It goes without saying that many of you know this term, but there are a few people who can admit that they are ready to cross the line and face their fears. However, we live in a fast-paced world where you must be competitive and risky to become successful. It means that it is crucial to be able to adapt to circumstances outside of your comfort zone, because everything you’ve ever wanted is usually just one step outside of it.
On the one hand, making a step outside of your comfort zone is extremely hard and needs a lot of courage, on the other hand only in moments when you face your fears and feel yourself uncomfortable you can do unbelievable things that are very beneficial to you. According to Abraham Maslow, it is in those moments that you decide: either to step forwards into growth or to step backwards into safety. Actually it means that if you choose the last option, you don’t lose anything, but you also don’t gain anything.
In order to avoid being a coward I found 25 steps that will help you to step out of your comfort zone. These are the following:
- Get out of your comfort zone and take risks. You’ll never know what’s out there for you until you go and find it for yourself.
- “Push yourself”. Never give up even when the going gets rough.
- Make a list – even mental one – of what you really want to achieve. Go through this list every morning and let it motivate you. (Personally, I thing that the best way is a vision board, except motivation, it brings a lot of fun during its creation)
- Practice work-life balance. Everyone needs to rest.
- Set your priorities. Identify what needs to be done now and what can wait.
- Be positive. Doubting what you are capable of cannot and will not lead to success.
- Practice makes perfect: improve a skill by doing it over and over again until you get it right.
- Step up and take initiative. Make things happen for you instead of waiting for these to happen to you.
- Be hands-on. If you have business, make sure you know it inside out.
- Exercise. Keep your body healthy to avoid sickness and decreased productivity.
- Keep an open mind to new ideas and opinions.
- Aim to be the best at all times. Don’t settle for mediocrity when it comes to your output or your performance. (In my point of view it’s one of the best advices; you should remember that you deserve a perfect life and you are willing to get it)
- “Walk your talk”. Lead by example.
- Finish what you have started. You will feel more fulfilled.
- Accept the challenges that come your way and see them as opportunities to improve. (From my own experience, I believe that even in the hardest times, you should try to see the light at the end of the tunnel)
- Take responsibility for your actions. If you make mistakes, learn from them.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It is part of your learning experience. (As I always tell: “the worst question is the one that haven’t been asked)
- Have the humility to listen and to learn.
- Respect others, whether they are of authority or not. Treat everyone equally.
- Do not compromise your values. Stand up for your beliefs.
- Build your network. Knowing more people will help you in the long run.
- Be confident and proud of what you do. (If you do not believe in yourself, who does? Ask yourself this question as often as possible. I do it almost every day and believe me it helps to increase your inner motivation)
- Know your limits. Ask for help if your work is taking a toll on you.
- Love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, don’t lose hope. (For me it’s really important to enjoy everything I do, because only this can bring you satisfaction at the end. Confucius once said: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life”)
- Have your family and friends with you on your journey to share your success with. (Truly saying, having your family and friends close to you is the most important thing in the life. Neither success, fame nor wealth can bring you happiness if you will be alone)
In the end I would like to give you my personal advice – “don’t be afraid”, this awful feeling can ruin your dreams, your future and your life. Live every day fearless and remember that magical things can happen in life when you step out of your comfort zone.
