Learning to be there for others in their moments of need is an absolute quality. No one will ever remember someone based on how many cars they had, or how big their homes was. Most people remember the quality of character in a person once they depart. Be that person that everyone remembers. This is something that everyone should thrive for. Life is too short as it is, so building yourself a good reputation is definitely something you should work towards to.
We all have our own problems that we need to deal with on a daily basis. What makes you a better person is finding that to help others while you are still helping yourself. Helping others when time is convenient is not something to really be proud of, as it may be misconstrued as being bored. Everyone you will come across are facing their own challenges and will never reach out to you when they need help as it shows a sign of weakness. As they already feel bad for the situation they put themselves in, it takes a lot for them to ask for help. Notice the signs, the facial and body language and come up with your own conclusion. Being there for someone in need has its benefits. You will also feel great for your contribution to making someone's life better, even for a little bit.
