Two Powerful NLP Techniques to Transform Your Life

In this article I have listed only two of many powerful techniques that I have used to change my behaviour and transform my life. Using them will help you achieve better results and attract more positive experiences in your life.

1. Meaning Reframe (content reframe)

"For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." (William Shakespeare-Hamlet, Act 2.) As human beings we attribute meaning to everything that we encounter and experience in life. It's how we make sense of the world around us. Our experiences don't necessarily have any meaning whatsoever, the meaning they have is what we give them.

If you find yourself in a situation that causes fear, anger or discouragement, this technique will help you change the meaning of the situation. It will enable you to think about it in a more empowering and resourceful way. In a nutshell, it will allow you to place the content of the situation into another frame.

For me reframing is a way of turning my negative thoughts about a situation into positive ones. This doesn't mean I'm being unrealistic or oblivious to potential challenges within the situation, but rather more empowered to find practical solutions that work. By changing the meaning I attach to the experience I gain a new perspective.

2. Perceptual Positioning

There are times when people can't see things from your perspective, they seem to be stuck within their own world and can't seem to understand what it may be like for you. When we are able to understand other people's maps of the world, we are able to communicate better, show empathy, resolve conflict and maintain rapport.

A principle way to gain information that may have been hidden from conscious awareness is systematically shifting from one perceptual position to another. There are three main perceptual positions: first, second and third position. This involves seeing things from our perspective (first), the other person (second or other), and from a detached position (third or observer).

The one I want to mention is the second position, this is where you imagine stepping into the other persons shoes and start to experience the world through their eyes, you will disassociate from your own thoughts, feelings and beliefs and associate into the 'other', you will 'see' yourself through their eyes. The more you can associate with their beliefs, values and feelings, the more accurate you will be to understanding their view, as well as increase rapport.

Conclusion

When these two NLP techniques are practiced correctly, they can promote change in many areas of your life. If you feel the technique isn't producing the desired effect, keep practicing it until you experience the desired effect.
